Black Magic card

Forum,
I see many references to Black Magic card.
What is it?
What does it do?
Michael Craven.

They, like the AJA cards, capture video that is not capturable via firewire. Also, they can output proper signals to monitors for proper color grading.

  • Black magic card a/v settings for capture??????????????????????

So I have a black magic intensity pro card. I am trying to use it with my JVC HDV 720p 60fps camcorder. I know I need to lower the setting to have it actually work without a ton of raid cards and so I have the "A/V Settings" set to:
Sequence preset: Black magic HDTV 720p 60 - Jpeg
Capture preset: Black magic HDTV 720p 60 - Jpeg
    Device Control preset: Non-controlable device
Which is what everything I have read has said to do, but it refuses to work I get an error saying there is no video coming through the audio meeter does not even bounce in preview. It is not the cables I have tested both. What else could it be?

I also have the intensity settings in the mac system preferences set to y, r-y, b-y video & analog RCA Audio.
    I am still stumped!

In my opinion, if the driver of your new BlackMagic card are compatible
with your operative system, and installed correctly, FMLE uses it as any
other peripheral, so it should work.
Maybe you can ask to their support to be sure...

  • Soundtrack Pro (randomly?) disables my Black-Magic card I use as Sound Card

I uprgraded to 5.1 FCP and now my woes begin. Before Sountrack worked seamelessly. But now, sometimes it will play back (be audible) through the video card I use as my sound card also - a Black-Magic Decklink, and sometimes it won't. It does play though the internal speaker.
But on a few occasions, with no apparent intervention on my part, the sound does come via the sound card.
I have gone to my general preference, I have gone to Sountrack Preferences. I have tried the manual, but the manual search, you know, doesn't ever list any searches that bear at the moment at hand.
Also, Soundtrack Pro disables the card. for instance, to hear iTunes through the card, I had to quit Soundtrack Pro. Of course Apple wants to charge me for "help" with this. For myself, no idea, very stymied.

I also have the intensity settings in the mac system preferences set to y, r-y, b-y video & analog RCA Audio.
    I am still stumped!

  • Black Magic Capture Card

    Hi Everyone,
I'm about to order a Black Magic card because I can't seem to output DV or HDV to my Sony GV-HD700 deck. Am I correct in believing this will solve my issue, and are Black Magic users happy with the card?
    Thanks
    Boxcar

I'm happy with my BMD HD Extreme card. But I'm not sure that will fix your output problem. I noticed on Sony's website that the specification section for your model does not list Leopard as compatible. It only goes as high as OS X 10.1. My guess is that might be the problem. Also, double check the output settings in Final Cut to make sure you're setup for DV.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Issues with AJA and Black Magic

Has anyone had any issues outputting via AJA and Black Magic cards?
I have 3 Macs using Black Magic Intesnsity Pro HDMI cards and 1 Mac using an AJA IO Express. On all the machines, i get weird audio issues intermitantly. I press play, no audio comes out. I stop, press play again, no audio comes out but the PP VU meter is registering. I stop, and press play again, and i hear distortion coming from my speakers, i stop and play again, and everything is fine. These issues are consitantly happening, but not necisarily in that order. I also get out of sync audio, then stop and press play again, and its all good.
I fell as though i have narrowed it down to being between PP and the IO cards, because if i turn the cards off in PP, my audio is fine everytime.
I have the propper Premiere Pro drivers (for AJA) and all the latest firmware and drivers for black magic. I am playing Quicktime media, usually Apple Pro Res hq or 444. IO and data rate with same codecs works perfectly in FCP. I have also tried using media that is local as opposed to on our server.
Has anyone had issues with this? Is this a known bug with in PP? Will it ever get fixed???
    Thanks.

I have expereinced this issue on my Mac Pro right before I switched to a PC.
Call AJA Support. They are there to help you!

  • Dslr footage with Black magic intensity - playback stops at every new clip

Every time the play head reaches a new clip it just stops.

  • Black Magic External monitoring and Canvas Presets: Motion3

I have a Black magic card on my 3.0 quad intel. I am creating s Text commercial in Motion3. I have mixed the audio and imported that into Motion3. So, I am set up to create the entire project's visuals in Motion3.
My canvas is set to Broadcast HD 1080i60 because i didn't see 1080p60 and for this job i wanted to use something that is default.
I set the BM Intensity to to BM HD 1080i 59.94 and the HDTV is set to 1060i60 (via HDMI).
I get a tile in the middle of the lcd. Like 720p on a 1080p screen.
To get the best monitoring in my config how would i set up Motion3 , The BM Intensity , and maybe the HDTV also?
I am trying to avoid the jagged edges on the text and photo-wrinkles from down-scaling.
    PS: i started in motion3 as DVCpro50 - 720p30.

What is the correct set up so that i can make PP default to sending the stream to the external on every project?
There is no way to set this on a project basis; it's per sequence. You must use one of the Blackmagic sequence presets to enable external monitoring from a sequence.
Also who do i set premier to dual screen editing?
I'm not positive, but this should be possible with the BMD card. However, setting up two desktop monitors is an OS setting, not necessarily a Premiere Pro setting. As long as you can expand your desktop over two monitors, you should be able to set up Premiere Pro and its various frames and panels to utilize both monitors. This is independent of full-screen external monitoring through the BMD.
In premier preferences under the media tab i see the intermediate media timebase ... Does this effect how Premier is handling my source footage? If not what does the window effect?
That dictates (or is supposed to, anyway) how imported media that does not have a specific timebase/frame rate should be handled on import. As far as I'm aware, this only affects image sequences--I've never seen it have any influence on an imported video or audio file. Even if it's set wrong when you import an image sequence, you can reinterpret the image sequence once it's in your project. Simply right-click it and select Modify > Interpret Footage. If you don't use image sequences, I think you can safely ignore this setting.

  • What is the BEST cable connection from Canopus ADVC 300 to Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card?

I must connect an ADVC 300 to a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card.   For best quality, which cable should I use?
On the ADVC 300 there are outputs of firewire, S-VHS and RCA.
On BMPro it's a little confusing. On the breakout cable there are connectors that say:
    -5 B-Y OUT
    -4 Y OUT
    -3-R-Y OUT
    -7-R-Y IN
    -8-Y IN
    -9 B-Y IN
    -15 AUDIO IN RIGHT
    -10 AES/EBU OUT
    -12 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -14 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -13 AUDIO RIGHT OUT
With the BMPro, there is also a separate, shorter cable.  On one end it looks like S-VHS and on the other there are two connectors, one black and one blue.
On the actual BMPro Express card strip instead of using the breakout cable, there is HDMI IN (and HDMI OUT).
How should I connect this?  Is there an adapter cable of FIREWIRE TO HDMI?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Well, when I researched how best to digitize VHS (into Final Cut Pro 7), I learned two of the best devices to use are BMPro and Canopus ADVC 300.  I’m using the ADVC 300 for the built-in time base corrector.  I definitely want to use that to stabilize the video.  I also read how well BMPro improves image quality.  So, I thought to use the two together must produce outstanding quality (well, as good as VHS can be).
Perhaps I got confused into thinking I can use both.  But the BMPro appears to have an S-VHS adapter.
I guess I’m wondering what is better quality:
Run the firewire from the Canopus ADVC 300 converter directly into the firewire port on the Mac Pro
Or, run an S-VHS cable from the Canopus ADVC 300 into the BMPro Capture card
(I should mention that I have purchased all these items and already have the BMPro Card installed so at this point it’s not a cost issue, but rather an issue of simply which works best?)

  • How do I get Premiere Pro to reconize my Black Magic video card?

I'm trying to set up CS6 but Premiere doesn't reconize my Black Magic video card. Can someone help?

I have a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme HD Card. Copied All Files from Blackmagic Installation folder ( C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic Desktop Video\Premiere Support ) to appropriate folders in Premiere install folder and everything Started worked fine. Looks like a installation bug by Blackmagic. If it helps please mark as useful. thanks.

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro Card & Final Cut Studio

I'm in the process of purchasing a Mac Pro to use for my New Wedding Video Business. I have purchsed the New Sony HVR-HD1000. I'm looking to get everything at one time and something has me very confused. I hope that someone can please help me.
As I understand it. I take my New Sony HD Cam via Firewire800 and Final Cut Studio will just suck it all in.
If thats the case, What is the need for products such as the "Black Magic Intensity Pro Card"?
Do I need it when my Mac Pro/Final Cut will import my footage anyways?
Please help me make a sound decision.
    Thank you for your time.

No disrespect taken. I might not be very technical but some times I wonder if I'm doing the right thing.
Maybe some history will help explain my situation.
I have a old cheap-o hand held Sony SD Mini DV Cam that I used all year to puts around with. As a test of my skills went to weddings and events for fun. All of these events had "Professional Videographers" I was just here for fun with my little camera.
For fun I would turn in my little DVD and the response was incredible. Even though my footage sucked compared to all the "Pro Cameras" being used it was my skills in editing, having fun with the video, and using lots of Motion graphics and titles. I became so popular that people wanted me to actually film events as a paid rig!
With no training what so ever and just tinkering with Final Cut Studio - I have a long list of "word of mouth" gigs with people waiting for me to film for them.
My parents then decided to give me a few gifts. (1) Sony HVR-HD 1000 and (2) JVY GY100HD Cameras. I now have all the gear I need. I never owned cameras like this before so as I started looking into getting a Mac Pro - All these questions came to mind.
My point is - I used a POS camera and consumers ate it all up. I didnt worry about "Color Space" or ProRess anything. I just imported as DV - edit the footage - have fun with it - burn it on DVD and call it a day.
I'm just seriously asking - now that I have nice cameras that didnt cost me a dime - cant I just continue the same way I have been with my POS camera?
Is anything more than just Firewire800 to my Mac really that critical for Weddings on SD DVD's?

    Thank you for your time.

    A few things to remember:
The best resolution you will get with your HD camcorder is to record LIVE from the camera to the Intensity card connected via HDMI. No compression (HD to HDV) will occur in the camera before the computer sees it. You can either record uncompressed (best) or have FCP/Premier record with a codec (422, etc.). 422HQ is supposed to be "visually" the same as uncompressed HD but requires significantly less space. Recording HD uncompressed REQUIRES Raid disk setups. Depending on your setup, you may require Raid with with 422. The down side for this highest resolution mode is you MUST have your computer hooked up to the camcorder via HDMI to the Intensity card while recording! Not typically feasible when doing live events and being mobile with your camcorder.
The second best MAY be playing back the recorded video (HDV compressed onto the tape) via the HDMI (not firewire) to the Intensity. Here it depends on the quality of the codec INSIDE the camcorder vs. the software codec in the computer. The advantage with an Intensity card here is that you can record onto the computer using a more "editable" format (see below).
The third best (may be just as good as the second above) is to transport the recorded video (HD compressed) via firewire from the camcorder directly to the mac. The only difference from two above is how good the software codec on the mac is compared to the camera. Opinions vary here.
Editing the DV/HDV directly is often near impossible - meaning it must be recorded (converted) on the hard disk in a more editable format. Long GOP issues arise often/sometimes with DV/HDV (MPEG 2).
Method 2 and 3 allow for portability. Method 1 is NOT portable/mobile.

  • Adobe not allowing import of XML file captured from Media Express through Black Magic capture card

I have been going crazy trying to find a way to import the XML files to fix the digitized look Adobe capture gave my footage. Someone help me
These are not XML from Final Cut. They are files saved from Media Express, a Black magic design program used for Capturing.
    THANK YOU.
Please email me if you know how to fix this
    [email protected]
    THANKS AGAIN!

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to open the actual media files captured with the program?

  • I want to use my Black magic Multi-Brigde Pro with Premiere. That is possible correct?

I want to use my Black magic Multi-Brigde Pro with Premiere. That is possible correct?

    Hi PragueGolem.
Yes, it's possible to use the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro with Premiere but it's also complicated to use the card with video and audio together.
I use a mac pro with the Multibridge Pro 1 and need to use an audio card too, because the card makes always problems with audio in Premiere CC.
In the audio hardware settings tab you have no selection possibility for the card. You have to select your standard system audio and to route this in Premiere. In your system audio panel you have the multibridge as standard card set.
Only for a short time it was possible for me to use the card with audio and video but after the last Premiere update I have to use the audio card again. I spend to much time in optimize my system to work well with the card and heard to many people have trouble with Premiere CC and the Multibridge Pro Card. In Premiere Pro it wasn't a problem at all...
    Regards,
    Flo.

  • Premiere Pro 5.5 + Black Magic Decklink Mini Monitor Issues

I have been running Ppro 5.5 on a windows 7 x64 machinine without issues. However, I added a Black Magic Decklink mini monitor recently. I am having issues of time line stopping at certain native transition effects like cross disolve and premier freezing crashing to blue screen when using black magic Ppro presets.
When I changed the render mode to 'Software only' things improved. However, still face freezing intermittently but frequency is much less.
I also use ASIO4all audio driver to monitor, though when I use BM presets sound is played through HDMI.
    My configuration is as below:
    Processor: Intel quad core i7 2600 K @ 3.40 GZ
    Memory: 8 GB
    Display Card: Nvidia Quardo 2000d
    OS: Windows 7 Professional x64
Edit Software: Adobe Production Premium CS 5.5 (PPro patch loaded)
SSD 128 GB system hard drive
    2 TB Media Drive Internal
Audio Interface: Mackie Tapco Firelink (not used when using Black Magic Ppro Presets)
Audio Driver: ASIO4ALL (not used when using Black Magic Ppro Presets)
Could any of you give some idea what could be wrong here?
    John

I have not used a Mini Monitor on CS5.5  (I have used others) but BM cards did work differently with CS5.5 to CS6, when Mercury Transmit was introduced.  They did not do realtime effects as well (as you are finding) and only output from Blackmagic sequences.  So most of the problems you are having, apart from the crashing, are normal.  The BM card is also seen as a sound card so it could be set to do the sound for the system, or for Premiere, even though the picture is not being transmitted (check the audio hardware preferences in Premiere to see which is being used for sound).
The crashes could be related to graphic card drivers.  CS5.5 won't be programmed to use the latest nVidia drivers, and we have had problems using the latest (300 series drivers) with CS5.5. which only show up with hardware (Blackmagic/Matrox etc) but work in software mode. The fact that you get crashes with effects may also point to this.  Try downgrading the quadro drivers and see what happens - to a version like 275 or 296 rather than a 300 series driver.
