I wanted to let you know that I made a practice dvd today, sampling edited clips from four different sources of imported vhs video--some of it 16mm dubbed to video around 20 years ago--into iMovie. I worked in the update of 6 to see if the application had stabilized at all. I've been working only in 5.0.2 recently.
I was pleasantly shocked at how much better the video quality was than on the computer--as you foretold. I really couldn't tell a visual difference from the source videos. What a relief! But do you work with that disparity, the difference between computer and TV, without a live TV monitor as you go? It's hard to make decisions on the basis of how it looks on the computer.
Other encouraging news: the garble around the edges didn't show at all on the TV screen. In the meantime, I'd been trying the plug-in you recommended. I'm glad I won't need to it for all this video after all, but I'm curious to experiment more with it. Any other plug-ins you'd recommend?
Thanks again for your generous response.
On a roll,

  • Analog to Digital Converter boxes

Does anyone think Apple will ever fix iMovie to restore usage of many analog to digital converter boxes that were broken by iMovie 5?
I have a SONY DVMC-DA1 firewire unit and wish I could use it again in iMovie. Does anyone know what the exact component is that they left out or changed that would cause this problem? I'm just trying to understand.

The ADVC-55 is capture only. It includes composite & s-video inputs and stereo audio inputs. Firewire output.
The ADVC-110 is bidirectional (meaning you can both capture and output through it - this is a very good way to monitor your video during production as you can see the actual quality on a monitor/TV rather than just your computer screen, which has limited capability to show you the actual video quality.) It includes composite & s-video inputs and outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output.
The ADVC-300 is also bidirectional and includes composite, s-video and component video i/o (D1 connector) inputs & outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output; and software that enables you to tweak its video settings. Helpful in cleaning up particularly bad analog videos.
I've used these things for years and they all work great. I do not believe there is any difference in the internal conversion hardware ... The primary differences are support for one-way vs. bidirectional conversion; input/output connectors; and the software that comes with the ADVC-300.
If you have basically clean analog video, any of these units will be fine. You can use any analog source (VHS deck, camcorder, DVD player, etc.) and would typically use iMovie or Final Cut Express to capture your video on a Mac.

  • Trouble importing analog video thru converter box into Imovie

I have a very old Sony Video 8 Handycam and and a Pyro A/V converter box. I movie sees the Camcorder/Box but when I press the import button the screen says "Importing" and nothing else happens. I have everything hooked up the way it should be. Can you help?

I movie sees the Camcorder/Box but when I press the import button the screen says "Importing" and nothing else happens.
Your capture work flow is not clear here. Are you trying to import in the Auto or Manual mode? Since no "communication" is possible here, you must capture your content in the application's manual mode. Without communication, there is no device control and you must also manually start and stop the camcorder manually. Simply begin playback on the camcorder and when you see the video begin to play on the iMovie '08 capture screen, then press the button to begin importing your video.

  • Black magic card a/v settings for capture??????????????????????

So I have a black magic intensity pro card. I am trying to use it with my JVC HDV 720p 60fps camcorder. I know I need to lower the setting to have it actually work without a ton of raid cards and so I have the "A/V Settings" set to:
Sequence preset: Black magic HDTV 720p 60 - Jpeg
Capture preset: Black magic HDTV 720p 60 - Jpeg
    Device Control preset: Non-controlable device
Which is what everything I have read has said to do, but it refuses to work I get an error saying there is no video coming through the audio meeter does not even bounce in preview. It is not the cables I have tested both. What else could it be?

I also have the intensity settings in the mac system preferences set to y, r-y, b-y video & analog RCA Audio.
    I am still stumped!

  • What is the BEST cable connection from Canopus ADVC 300 to Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card?

I must connect an ADVC 300 to a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card.   For best quality, which cable should I use?
On the ADVC 300 there are outputs of firewire, S-VHS and RCA.
On BMPro it's a little confusing. On the breakout cable there are connectors that say:
    -5 B-Y OUT
    -4 Y OUT
    -3-R-Y OUT
    -7-R-Y IN
    -8-Y IN
    -9 B-Y IN
    -15 AUDIO IN RIGHT
    -10 AES/EBU OUT
    -12 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -14 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -13 AUDIO RIGHT OUT
With the BMPro, there is also a separate, shorter cable.  On one end it looks like S-VHS and on the other there are two connectors, one black and one blue.
On the actual BMPro Express card strip instead of using the breakout cable, there is HDMI IN (and HDMI OUT).
How should I connect this?  Is there an adapter cable of FIREWIRE TO HDMI?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Well, when I researched how best to digitize VHS (into Final Cut Pro 7), I learned two of the best devices to use are BMPro and Canopus ADVC 300.  I’m using the ADVC 300 for the built-in time base corrector.  I definitely want to use that to stabilize the video.  I also read how well BMPro improves image quality.  So, I thought to use the two together must produce outstanding quality (well, as good as VHS can be).
Perhaps I got confused into thinking I can use both.  But the BMPro appears to have an S-VHS adapter.
I guess I’m wondering what is better quality:
Run the firewire from the Canopus ADVC 300 converter directly into the firewire port on the Mac Pro
Or, run an S-VHS cable from the Canopus ADVC 300 into the BMPro Capture card
(I should mention that I have purchased all these items and already have the BMPro Card installed so at this point it’s not a cost issue, but rather an issue of simply which works best?)

  • Imac won't recognize Pyro A/V converter box

I can't seem to get my G-4 imac to recognize my Pyro A/V convertor box to use for importing analog video. I've tried resetting power, unplugging cables, etc. I'm pretty new to mac, so could someone help me with this?

I have same problem on G5 Dual. Used to work with Panther. Have your found any solution yet?
I have a Sony 8mm 72X camcorder ( with standard RCA output cables to an ADS Pyro A/V Link API -550 rev B converter box. I connect with firewire 400 to front of Mac G5 Dual with Tiger OS 10.4.7.
I also upgraded to iLife 6 recently
It used to work with Panther and iLife 4.
Now I cannot get iMovie HD to see the camcorder. Tried all the tips of restarting, unhooking etc. Neither does Final Express 5 or Premier 6 (Classic).
Looked at ADS help pages-not much help, but I downloaded and installed FireWire SDK version 19 for Mac OS X! No change.
    Any suggestions?

  • What composition settings for  Black Magic 10 bits AVI 1920x1080 (1,0) 25p

    Hi,
I want to use some  Black Magic 10 bits AVI 1920x1080 (1,0) 25p footage and wonder what settings I have to use in the Composition Settings Dialog Box.
    Thanks! David

Change the project settings to 16 or 32 bit. Drag some footage into the create new comp icon at the bottom of the Project Panel.
Your composition will exactly match the clip. If you check composition settings you'll see:
Or you could just use the HDTV 25 preset. All the standard settings are supported.
You'll probably want to create a custom output module for your blackmagic codec and set that to be the default. Remember to include audio processing if it's important to your workflow.

depends, can you tell which of these boxes you have?  When you say converter box, I think you have the one at the bottom that says Motorola DCT-700.
Also try to describe what it's doing.

  • Converter Box

I have a Lenovo S10-3t abd I have been trying to conncet to my tv for a while now. To do this I brought a converter box and followed the instructions given here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBI8mkKBG68&feature=related but my reslts weren't nearly the same. The first time after everything had been connected my tv showed the rainbow bars like seen in the video. So I pressed Fn and the key on my laptop with the picture of a compter on it which on my laptop is F3. Four options then appeared on my screen reading: Notebook, External Display, External Display and Notebook Clone Mode, and External Display and Notebook Extended Mode. I chose External Display and Notebook Clone Mode anfd my computer blanked out for a moment and then appeared the same. The tv was the same as it was alson with the rainbow bars. So then I chose External Display and my laptop went black again but after many moments it still remained black. So I held the power button on my laptop until it shut down. When I started it again I cold finally see the screen. Then I tried to converter box connection agian and my laptop went black again and the next time I tried and the next and so on. So I would very much like to receive some help on this matter. Please?

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
May be this is caused by the resolution being sent from the computer being too large. Go into your display settings and change the outputting resolution to 1024 * 768. Or 800 * 600
    Hope This Helps
    Cheers!!!

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro Card

I'm in the process of purchasing a Mac Pro to use for my New Wedding Video Business. I have purchsed the New Sony HVR-HD1000. I'm looking to get everything at one time and something has me very confused. I hope that someone can please help me.
As I understand it. I take my New Sony HD Cam via Firewire800 and Final Cut Studio will just suck it all in.
If thats the case, What is the need for products such as the "Black Magic Intensity Pro Card"?
Do I need it when my Mac Pro/Final Cut will import my footage anyways?
Please help me make a sound decision.
    Thank you for your time.

    A few things to remember:
The best resolution you will get with your HD camcorder is to record LIVE from the camera to the Intensity card connected via HDMI. No compression (HD to HDV) will occur in the camera before the computer sees it. You can either record uncompressed (best) or have FCP/Premier record with a codec (422, etc.). 422HQ is supposed to be "visually" the same as uncompressed HD but requires significantly less space. Recording HD uncompressed REQUIRES Raid disk setups. Depending on your setup, you may require Raid with with 422. The down side for this highest resolution mode is you MUST have your computer hooked up to the camcorder via HDMI to the Intensity card while recording! Not typically feasible when doing live events and being mobile with your camcorder.
The second best MAY be playing back the recorded video (HDV compressed onto the tape) via the HDMI (not firewire) to the Intensity. Here it depends on the quality of the codec INSIDE the camcorder vs. the software codec in the computer. The advantage with an Intensity card here is that you can record onto the computer using a more "editable" format (see below).
The third best (may be just as good as the second above) is to transport the recorded video (HD compressed) via firewire from the camcorder directly to the mac. The only difference from two above is how good the software codec on the mac is compared to the camera. Opinions vary here.
Editing the DV/HDV directly is often near impossible - meaning it must be recorded (converted) on the hard disk in a more editable format. Long GOP issues arise often/sometimes with DV/HDV (MPEG 2).
Method 2 and 3 allow for portability. Method 1 is NOT portable/mobile.

  • Black Magic and Warp Stabilizer

I am working with 6.0, Footage is P2, Sequence is Black Magic Progressive @ 29.97 / 1920x1080. Black Magic board is Decklink 3d Extreme.
Black Magic Drop Down in "New Sequence Setting Box" shows no 1280x1080 option which is P2.  All Black Magic options are 1920x1080, progressive or interlaced.
When I drop the Warp Stabilizer onto a clip (P2) I get the message:
"Warp Stabilizer requires clip dimensions to match sequence"
How do I get around this, using the Black Magic Sequence and P2 footage?

With CS6, you shouldn't.  Any sequence should output via the hardware just fine.  Though I've never used that hardware, so I can't comment specifically on how to get that going.  See if this helps.

  • Black Magic Intensity Thunderbolt interfase is not recognized

I am trying to adapt the little box interfase Intensity from Black Magic throught the Thunderbolt port althought it is recongnized by my iMac system, Final Cut 10.0.3 doesn't. I followed the insctrucctions that seems simple: connect the thunderbolt cable into the iMac thunderbolt port, the other extrem into the thunderbolt port of the interfase and then connect an HDMI cable from the out port into the HDMI in port of the external monitor, select  the A/V option in the FCX ......and that's all!!!....but nothing happens....the signal is not recognized in the monitor....I tested with After Effects application and it does sends out the signal to the external monitor.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a codec or software that I have to install additional?

probably need to speak to Black Magic as they write the drivers for their stuff to work with fcpx

  • Black Magic Decklink Studio 2 and CS6

Hi, all.  I've been doing this for years and am always amazed at how complicated it is capturing video and audio with Premier.  Now, with CS6 and Black Magic Design's Decklink Studio2, it's no different.  The Black Magic capture utility works fine, but Premier won't recognize the card and it's drivers.  I can't build a capture list, but use the BMD utility to capture video for editing.
Experience says reload drivers.  I  did that.  Also loaded latest BMD drivers.  Still no capture in Premier.  One giant challenge is our company's IT department retains admin rights to this Windows7 64 bit Dell Precision 7730.  I have to open a trouble ticket to change or load anything!
Anyway, any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Mr. Bowen.  Thanks for the quick response.  Settings in Premier are limited.  The BM board has its own control panel.  But here is the setup:
NTSC, 29:97, RS422 machine control, use capture time code.
Premier takes in our HD P2 material just fine.  Also just about every flavor of AVCHD.  Trouble is we use a ton of vintage footage originating from RS422 machines: everything from s-vhs, ¾” and BetaCamSP.  Bottom line is it crashes EVERY time we try to use the capture function.  There’s machine control, but no capture window showing.  Obvious driver conflicts of some kind.   ☹

  • Soundtrack Pro (randomly?) disables my Black-Magic card I use as Sound Card

I uprgraded to 5.1 FCP and now my woes begin. Before Sountrack worked seamelessly. But now, sometimes it will play back (be audible) through the video card I use as my sound card also - a Black-Magic Decklink, and sometimes it won't. It does play though the internal speaker.
But on a few occasions, with no apparent intervention on my part, the sound does come via the sound card.
I have gone to my general preference, I have gone to Sountrack Preferences. I have tried the manual, but the manual search, you know, doesn't ever list any searches that bear at the moment at hand.
Also, Soundtrack Pro disables the card. for instance, to hear iTunes through the card, I had to quit Soundtrack Pro. Of course Apple wants to charge me for "help" with this. For myself, no idea, very stymied.

I also have the intensity settings in the mac system preferences set to y, r-y, b-y video & analog RCA Audio.
    I am still stumped!
