Black or White patches on Photoshop images

I use Photoshop CC on a new iMac.  Recently my images have been randomly filling with black or white at varying zoom levels. Or they have rectangular black or white patches on one corner/side.  If I zoom in or out these fills/patches will disappear at some levels and reappear at others.  Anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to rectify the problem?  Shutting down PS and/or re-booting the computer usually deals with the current issue, but then the problem reappears on another image at a later stage.  It's happening frequently enough to be very annoying!

Google updated the plugins recently to correct this problem:

Version 1.109 (December 11/2013) is the latest:
Fixed black or white tile artifacts that might have occurred after returning to Photoshop from plug-ins
You can find out the version you have installed by launching Photoshop:
On Mac: Select Photoshop>About Plug-in>Analog Efex Pro… (or any other NIK Plug-in)
On Windows: Select Help>About Plug-in>Analog Efex Pro… (or any other NIK Plug-in)

  • How do I get a black and white photo in Photoshop Elements 11?

I have a very old version of Photoshop, release 6 I believe.  In that release, I am able to use enhance/brightness and contrast, and when I slide the contrast to 100%, I get a pure black and white image of my photo.  I Photoshop 11, which I just purchased today, I am unable to get a pure black and white image, only grayscale.  I cut pictures out of wood, and it's fundamentally necessary that I can contrast pictures into pure black and white.  How do I do that in Photoshop 11?  The first screenshot is what I need in Photoshop 11, the second screen shot is the limitation I'm seeing in Photoshop 11.  How do I get a black and white photo??

(I edited this reply because I originally couldn't see the screen shots.)
There was a change made a few versions ago where Brightness and Contrast were improved so that they did not clip values so quickly. This was intended to improve how Brightness and Contrast worked for photographs, but it makes it work less well for purposes such as channel manipulations or printmaking.
In Photoshop there is a Legacy check box in Brightness/Contrast to make it work the "old" way when that is desired. It looks like that check box isn't in Photoshop Elements, which is what you're actually using. I'm not sure if there is a way to get the Legacy behavior in Elements, so you'll want to ask over in the Photoshop Elements forum.

  • How do I undo black and white default in photoshop?

Whenever I place a colored photo into photoshop it automatically is placed as a black and white photo by default.  I don't want this to happen.  How do I fix this?

You have to be sure the file you are placing it into is rgb mode and not grayscale.
If you File > Place a color photo into a grayscale document, it will turn grayscale.
So before you do that, go to Image mode in Photoshop and select RGB.

  • Black and White Preview for all images Quick and Easy can it be done?

Before I switched to Mac, I used a google program to do my iphoto/aperture like editing called Picasa. Picasa allowed me to change my view to black and white so that all my images looked black and white until I changed my view back. This was GREAT for letting me look at a wedding or a group of images and quickly scan for the ones that looked spectacular in black and white as apposed to color.
I have been desperately trying to find a setting in Aperture that will allow me to do that so that I can get a super quick preview of everything and mark the ones that I want to really spend time converting to black and white.
Does anyone know how to do this? I would almost be willing to change my monitor settings to greyscale temporarily if that is even possible.

    What I do is this:
In the View Menu set Proofing Profile to Gray Tone.
Then anytime you want to see things in B&W, hit ShiftOptP
(Pictures are only B&W in Viewer only mode--large or full screen. But you can use the arrow keys to move through a whole album)

  • Wrong green tone on black and white photos in Photoshop / Windows 7

When I open the same photo on the web at 500px in Internet Explorer it is in real black and white without a green tone. If I open the same page in Firefox or Chrome it has the same green tone as in Photoshop

Technical: Desktop computer, Philips 244E monitor, Windows 7, latest browsers, ATI HD 5450 2 GB graphic card. Latest driver. Photoshop CS5, The monitor is calibrated with a X-Rite calibrator.
I have looked at the settings on my Windows laptop (with no problems) and made the same settings, but it does not help. I have tried to change nearly everything in the settings.
Hope someone can help me. It is a bad problem for an amateur photographer... :-(

  • Photoshop Black and White profile for printing

I'm a black and white photographer, so this issue is extremely important for me to resolve. I've been looking online and I have yet to find the answer, so I hope someone can help.
I need to know how to set up the black and White profiles in Photoshop for printing. The printer I have is a canon Pixma Pro 9000 a mark II
I need true black and white. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. If you need me to provide additional information let me know.

I frequently print black & white work on an Epson, using the Advanced black & white feature in the print driver.
A quick internet search found that there is something similar for Canon -  Canon : PIXMA Manuals : Digital Photo Printing Guide : Black and White Printing
I print scanned grayscale files, and have the grayscale profile in PS set to Gamma 2.2.
If you are printing digital photos, they will be RGB, but that will probably not make any difference. But you have to read the documentation for the Canon to find out if it will. IOW - if the image should be Grayscale or RGB.
One very important thing when printing like this is to set the printer to manage colors (not PS) in the PS Print dialog.

  • My screen is now a black and white negative image - can I reverse it to col

After 3 small children were near my computer - it was turned on , the screen is now black and white like a negative image, when starting up the initial checks of firewall etc are displayed on the normal colour screen then as soon as the start up is over it goes to Black and white. I have been through the settings on the computer but can not find any changes that have occured - I suspect the 3 toddlers have pressed everything at once
Can anyone tell me how I can get the colour back?

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences
and turn off the White on Black option under Seeing,
as well as any other options which may have been
inadvertently turned on or changed, such as the
    contrast.

Thank you very much - problem solved in 10 seconds flat

  • White ring around PSD images

    hi,
i'm noticing a one pixel white ring around photoshop images I bring into FCP.
Anyone else have this problem? What am I doing wrong.
    Thanks,
    Chase Roberts

Yes, I'm new here AND new to anything MAC and FCP. On top of all else, this is my first series of HD projects with a nasty deadline. I do need this forum and want be helpful too. I'll describe the workflows!< </div>
Unsolicited advice: Accepting a job on a deadline that depends upon applications about which you know little is bad, really bad. You need more time and experience, neither of which we can provide.
I haven't been following the whole thread so you may have already eliminated this. Here's my suggestion: Change the canvas to black on one simple element, create a new alpha, flatten it, import it.
Most Photoshop people have no clue about video. They create on a white background because they print inks on white paper. Video is black; how would they know that unless they're video people? Saving the alpha when using a white canvas ***** in billions of white pixels from the edges of everything. If you antialias, you actually pick up more white and grey pixels.

  • PICS IN BLACK AND WHITE.

I take a b/w picture with my 4s, IOS 7.1.1. Once I sync it to iphoto– 8.1.2 -   is in colour. How do I solve?

Are you just making a copy of the same image so you have 2 layers of the same thing? Or are you copying one image and pasting it into another image so you have 2 layers with different images on each of them?
There's only one way for what you describe to happen: You're pasting the copy into another image that is in Greyscale Mode, that's black and white. Click on Image>Mode and click RGB. Your black and white copy should get its color back.

  • Reveresing black and white still Photoshop image in FCP?

is it possible to reverse the black and white of a still photoshop image within FCP? then remove the background apart from the letters?
need to get a black and white company logo into FCP for use in the credits of this programme - due to a graphic designer being away i've had to scan the image off letterhead! very backwards and not ideal I know - but its a bit of a emergency so any pointer very much appreciated...

Drag and drop your image from the viewer to the timeline, lets say in V2.
Right click the logo clip>go to composite mode>select screen.
That's it. You now have the white text with no black background and whatever is in V1 replaces the black.

  • Help! Photoshop is in RGB mode but I can only paint in black and white

It seems like Photoshop is stuck in B&W. As soon as I open my document, it shows at the top that it is in RGB/8 mode. I've tried clicking Image>mode>RGB again just to be sure but it's already set to RGB. The document is one layer so there's no way another layer is affecting it. Does anyone have an idea what may be going on? I'd appreciate any help I can get!

If it says rgb/8 then it is in rgb 8 bit mode.
If your opening a file, it could be 1 or more of the channels are missing or a single channel is selected. Take a look at the channels panel and see if the RGB channels are there and RGB is selected.
    {odds are this is not it as the name of the channel would replace RGB/8 ex. selecting the B channel would display Blue/8 instead of RGB/8}
Make sure your document is not in quickmask mode (hitting the q key switches between quickmask and normal mode)
    {odds are this is not it as quickmask/8 would be displayed instead of rgb/8}
Make sure you don't have a mask selected
    {Odds are this is not it as layer mask/8 would be displayed instead of RGB/8}
Take a look at your swatches and verify there are colors there and not shades of gray
    {Odds are this is not true because RGB/8 is displayed}
And finally verify what adjustment layers are applied to the layers panel - Several adjustments are capable of changing the display to black and white while retaining the RGB/8 mode.
If none of this helps then post a screen shot of photoshop with the layers panel and the channels panel open. You can drag a panel away from the docked position to keep it open.

  • Photoshop Script  Black and White Raster to Vector

I do not have AI Adobe for I do not want to spend the money and have to learn an other complex Adobe application. I'm no artist either.  However at rimes I wanted  to have AI live trace feature to change black and white line drawing into vector graphics. AI creates EPS files with embedded vectors. And can export the vector to Photoshop.  Though Photoshop opens EPS as raster layers I find that EPS file created from tracing black and white lines and artwork with programs like potrace that use curves to create black vector shapes. That when these are opened in Photoshop as Black layer with transparency. When these layers transparency are loaded as a selection and the selections converted to path. I find the path are extremely good.
Potrace is a cross platform open source program packages available for many operating systems. Windows (32 bit) and (64 bit), Mac OS X (Intel), Mac OS X (universal),Linux (32 bit) and (64 bit), Linux (Alpha), Linux (Sparc64), Sun Solaris (Sparc), Sun Solaris (i386), Sun Solaris (x86_64), FreeBSD (i386), NetBSD (i386), OpenBSD (i386), AIX and AROS (i386). Potrace is a command line command. So it can be use started with options and passed a file from bat files and scripts. Potrace requires No instillation. All the needed potrace requited files just need to be place into a folder and potrace run from that folder as the current directory.
So a created a Photoshop script that more or less uses potrace like a Photoshop Plug. The script define a custom shape for the current active document using potrace and add a new shape layer using the new defined custom shape as the top layer. The script also toggle off the other visible layers so you just see the shape layer.  You can use alt click on the shape layer visibility icon to toggle the other layer visibility so you can see how well it matches the document.
I'm a windows user so the Photoshop script I wrote though in javascript will most likely only run on a windows platform because of my use of windows features its command line start command and file system conventions. I'm quite sure a Mac variant could created. Here is screen capture showing how well the defile shape  matches up and a link to the script. You would need to download potrace to use it and fix the vars in the script that point to potrace. http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/potrace.jsx

    Good day!
Please check out the chapter "Automation" in the Reference.
If the task can be recorded as a plain Action it can be applied to multiple Files for example via File > Automate > Batch or File > Scripts > Image Processor.

  • Scaling 1-bit bitonal black and white images

I have an image of a document that was scanned
black-and-white (1-bit color depth) that I need to display and
scale. When I use Flex's built in Image.Scale it scales very
"choppy" and unreadable. When I scale the same image in Photoshop,
it seems to use much more antialiasing, and the form is clearly
recognizable, even at just 125 pixels wide.
Is there a way to get Flex to use a better scaling algorithm
for 1-bit images? It seems to do a smashing-good job with
    full-color image scaling.

    thx for answering
You understood right, I have enough memory for saving 1-bit images, but
Graphics.drawImage(Image img, int x, int y, int anchor) can draw only RGB images so each time I want to draw some image, I have to remake 1-bit images into RGB images, it takes a lot time, so I need to make some optimization
My application draws symbols, but symbols are presented by Glyphs, so I draw some black&white Glyphs

  • Why are my duotone images turning black and white when put in indesign?

why are my duotone images turning black and white when put in indesign?
I have been playing duo and montotone images into indesing with no trouble. Then all of a sudden as I placew them they go black and whitre. I have tried everything from re saving, re making in photoshop and differant colours et5c. But nothing seems to wrok. The images already in my document arew fine it is just new ones. If someone could help that would be great

Can you start a new document and then load one of the duotones known to be good in the working file and have it correct? If so, try one of the duotones known to be bad in the working document in the new file. Does it work?
If no to either suggestion, can you share one of the images known to be good and one known to be bad? ZIP 'em up and upload to dropbox and plop a link here. Or, to keep the file sizes down, you can quickly make a new set and provide those.
As well, the ID version and OS info would probably be helpful.
    Take care, Mike
