Black-out glitches
Every time I watch a TV show or movie off AppleTV, I get black-out glitches for about the first 30 minutes. These are 1-second episodes where the screen goes black, then the show comes back. If I reverse, I can see what I missed, but the black-outs occur in different spots. After about 30 minutes, this quirk stops.
I noticed that it also happens when the unit is turned on, with just the screen saver on. It also happens with music videos and photo slide shows. I've tried everything--moving the unit, resetting, unplugging, turning it off between uses, leaving it on between uses. Any suggestions?
I assume you have tried swapping the resolution (what res are you using) ?
You are obviously have significantly more patience than I, I doubt I could live with this behavior. If you want to find the source of your issue I suspect you will need to do a little troubleshooting yourself:
I believe you can safely rule out anything to do with your PC/mac, itunes, your router or your network, if you wanted to check this you could always pull the network (either power down your router or pull the ethernet from the tv) and see if the problem persists.
This leaves you with the tv, the tv and the connecting cables as the possible source of the blackouts.
Swapping out the cable would easily eliminate the cabling, but not everyone has a spare HDMI cable and I wouldn't recommend buying a cheap cable to try this, cheap cables themselves are the source of a high number of problems.
You could move the tv to another tv if you have one with HDMI or even take it to a friends residence to try (you won't need anything but the tv, so no worries about having no mac/PC or network)
Once you have isolated the source of the problem, you will have to decide what to do. A faulty cable will need replacing, so will a faulty tv, but you will be able to do that under warranty. If it's down to the tv, then your choices might not be as straight forward. On the topic of tv's, I have noted several issues arising with Samsung tv's and indeed I have an LG tv that develops a sound issue when used with the tv, fortunately this happens about once every 6 weeks and is resolved by restarting the LG tv.

Logic 8 Glitch: Blacked out screen to the left of the play line
Using: Logic Pro 8.0.2 / Macbook Pro 2.8GHz i7 / 8GB ram / OSX 10.9.4
When I play anything on Logic, everything that has been played (everything to the left of the vertical play line) is blacked out (see figure 1). When I move the screen back and forth horizontally, it returns to normal. Sometimes the glitches are even more extreme (see figures 2+3). I went to reinstall logic off of the disk, but the DMG no longer works on this version of OSX. Is there some alternate way to reinstall this version of logic, or is there any discount for upgrading to a newer version?

This is a known issue with LP8 and OSX Mavericks, with no fix other than:
Downgrade your OS
Upgrade Logic: there is no "upgrade path', so either buy Logic Pro X from the AppStore, or possibly locate a "second-hand" LP9 (Logic Studio 2) upgrade (EBay?)

Black out on information regarding artwork
I have seen a number of threads on the issue of artwork suddenly not sticking to iTunes files, unless it is artwork that can automatically be found online through the get artwork function. In all the threads there are many people complaining that they can no longer attach artwork to files and none of the threads ends in resolve or answers, or even with information that confirms that this is simply the way it is going to be on 7.7.1 iTunes. Is this a blackout of information intentionally because iTunes has no intention of fixing this "problem". I've found that iTunes forums on Apple Discussions are always the forums that lack the successful answers, dialogue and information that the other forums so regularly provide. Honesty and some answers would be appreciated.

I also see people posting on this topic. But a Black Out? No. I don't think there is some big plot to 'hide' information regarding this issue. Considering that there could always be any number of reasons that someone is having problems with their iTunes artwork. 7.7.1 glitches (yes, I said that first), user error, copyright issues, whatever. There are so many variables that I don't think there is one answer that 'fixes it' and it's just being kept a big secret.
As far as the forums here in the Discussion Boards go, and your mention of the "lack the successful answers, dialogue and information that the other forums so regularly provide"....
I just don't see it. Really. Being that this is a user to user board (regardless of who may or may not peek in here), why you would expect that 'they' (that would be users, just like yourself) would have the answers to everything, when you don't, is kind of... well, I'll assume is coming from a place of total frustration. And to imply that "honesty and answers" aren't forthcoming on this particular topic (or any other for that matter) is unjustified and at best, misdirected. The truth is, if we had to pay for the help we get here from alot of these responders, we couldn't afford it.
And lastly, if users come to the boards and there is no help/answers to be had, iTunes has a great big Support Page that allows you to address your specific issues directly to the people that should have the answers/help you require. Thumbnails are completely blacked out
My thumbnails are completely blacked out (version XI). How can I make them show correctly?
It is happening on my Windows 8 computer at home and my windows 7 computer at work. I have adobe pro and reader XI at work and adobe reader XI at home. The documents I am trying to open are text books. I have contacted my school and they see them fine on their side, but I can't see them on mine so they told me it was a glitch on my side. They even resent me their document that opened correctly and I couldn't see it on my side.

Terrific. You ask Adobe for help and they dump you into an empty forum. Great customer service guys. Anyway, my problem is I have just installed CS5 onto a new iMac and the operating fields in Camera Raw, when opened from within Bridge, are blacked out. Someone has suggested I have to reinstall my OS, ie. erase two days of installation work, which is hardly helpful. Better off finding an alternative to Adobe. The frustration is this work is my profession. A professional tool shouldn't throw up this sort of glitch with no customer support.
Many thanks for your response. I have fixed the problem by reinstalling my operating system; thankfully being a Mac it didn't require reinstalling all my applications, or losing any data. I am pretty convinced, having run a few tests on other machines in my office that MacKeeper is the culprit and I have made sure it has been deleted off everyone's machines. I would recommend to everyone with MacKeeper to do the same.

My URL Bar is blacked out on Windows XP
I don't know what the computer decided to do, but sometime after I went to bed last night and when I woke up this morning Firefox seems to have changed.
The URL bar where you type in the web address now blacks out the URL so that I cannot see what is typed up there. I found other links to the same issue

However, my problem is that I am on Windows XP whereas all the fixes I can find are for other OS. It suggests going into the about:config and altering gfx.xrender.enabled but when I search I do not have an xrender option available. I assume this is because I am on Windows.
So can anybody help me figure out what needs to be changed on the settings for an XP user to solve this issue?In Firefox version 33, Firefox has implemented a new, faster way of loading webpages. This new feature is called OMTC.
There was an issue with black screens/boxes but it has been addressed in Firefox 33.0.1. The latest version is now 33.0.2. Please update to the latest version of Firefox if you are not currently on it:

If you are finding that there are still problems, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
# Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options''
#In the Firefox Options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

LR4.4 - blacked out boxes when importing images from upgraded PSE10 catalogue [was: Lightroom 4]
I have been using photoshop elements 10 for over a year and decided it was time to upgrade to Lightroom for my photo workflow as I am doing more paid photography work. I purchased and received my boxed full version of Lightroom 4 from B & H photovideo on Friday. I installed it then went on-line and updated it with the download of lightroom 4.4. Then I opened lightroom 4.4 for the first time and went to files and selected upgrade my photoshope elemnts catalog to lightroom. Once that was completed I then tried to import images to lightroom 4 to work with them and all I get are blacked out or greyed out boxes in my slide strip at the bottom of the desktop window in import mode. When I point to each box it shows a file name but will not show the image. I have spent all kinds of time reading and watching tutorials on opening images, importing images and catalogs and I am FRUSTRATED.... Would really like to talk to someone to get this figured out. I never thought it would be this difficult to use this program... HELP Please...
I would like to THANK YOU for your assistance in my situation. I followed your suggestion and went into my monitor settings and did a manual reset to the default profile and went back to Lr and the images started popping up one at a time until all 7000+ were visable. Just for the record, I am using Canon 1Ds Mark II, on a Quadcor AMD unlocked FX processor running Windows 7. I shoot in RAW and convert to JPG. It would have been the last thing for me to look at on my monitor settings as all the other programs on my computer run without a glitch. Thanks again for your help... Cheers!

This is the third time it's done it today and the 5th time ever. My AppleCare ran out the middle of March, so I guess they are right on in determining when it's time to get a new computer.
When it blacks out, it just goes immediately, no flickering, no warning whatsoever. I can still see the desktop underneath the black and I can still move the cursor. I don't know anything what the insides are like, but the apple light on the top of the case goes out when the screen blacks out.
When I closed the top and opened it again, it brought the screen back up right away. But this last time, it took a few closing and openings to get it to come back up, making me think it's going to get worse.
Last week was the first time it ever went black. I initially thought it was falling in to sleep mode and held down the power key to get it to reboot. I'm pretty sure sleep has nothing to do with it, but I set my display to not go to sleep at all today to find out. It's blacked out twice since.
I don't use a screen saver, it's happened on battery and power adapter. Other people have mentioned the fan not running, I can't remember ever hearing my fan run or else it's just so quiet I can't tell the difference between it and the hard drive.
My iBook is a late 2004 model 14" 1.33 and, I just upgraded to Tiger (coincidence?) There have been no other problems to speak of other than the keyboard losing letters, battery needing to be replaced and the usual airport glitches. It hasn't been dropped or spilled on. Any suggestions on how to fix this and what I might be looking at when/if taking apart the screen?It sounds like you might have a bad inverter cable, especially since it is affected by the position of the display. I think this is just a mechanical failure of the cable caused by many openings and closings of the display.
You might check out the troubleshooting section of the ifixit site and read about the inverter cable and see if it sounds like what is happening to you. I gather it is a real job to replace it. Ifixit and Powerbookmedic would be two good resources:

Standard def STB repeatedly blacks out for a second or 2
A site search on "black out" does not turn up a similar issue, of course it may be my search skills are lacking.
New subsciber since Sep 2010. I have 3 boxes, 2 standard QIP2500 phase 3 (basement/MBR) and 1 hi-def (LR). Hi def TV in MBR, standard in other 2. Both standards would on occassion 'black out' for just a second or 2 ever since original install. No problem with the hi-def. One standard is wired with coax, one with s-video, the hi-def with HDMI. When the black out occurs, the screen will freeze for an instant, then the screen goes black, then it comes back. The information on the box does not black out, the TVs don't power-off and restart. It's just the screen goes blank and then comes back. It happens without any seeming warning, and will happen at any time of day. Sometimes it will happen repeatedly, sometimes it won't happen for a long time. Both boxes have been repeatedly reset and rebooted with no improvement. During one tech call the tech had me relocate one of the standard boxes to the hi-def location to isolate that it wasn't a location (in-house cable) problem. I thought it curious since it was happening at 2 different locations but went through the drill anyway. The relocated standard worked for a few minutes, then went black for a second as the problem does. Plugging the high-def back in resolved the issue at that location. The tech said he would send 2 new standard boxes. The replacement boxes have not resolved the issue. Any suggestions?if it's doing that on two different boxes using both coax and s-video then I think that leaves a possibility of the coax. that would be a unusual symptom of a bad coax/splitter but try this.
Wait for it to start acting up - when it starts acting up, stay tuned to that station, and hit your menu > customer support > in home agent > network diagnostics and click ok to start.
check the video signal using that menu selection. after it's done running it will give you a general message like "you're video signals are not in the optimal range" after you see that, hit info and then look at the SNR DB it should give you a number.
32-36 is optimal, below that is questionable.
If it is below that then it's probably going to be a problem with the splitter at your house, and you would either replace it yourself, or call verizon to replace it. be sure to tell them the DB -
MBP C2D 15" display blacks out!
My week old MBP C2D 15" blacks out on me. I find that it happens when applying light pressure on the back side, at a surface square underneath F1 - F5 - F - Caps Lock. Light pressure makes it flicker, a little harder results in complete black out. Obviously a production fault and I will of course take it in when I have time... this is my work tool so no way I can just leave it in for days. But that is another issue. Maybe someone else experience the same black out? My build is 8N1037

Did you find out the reason? The same message shows up in the system.log of my iMac Core Duo after the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update, but the iMac works fine.
Cleaning all caches, repair user rights, PRAM and SMC Reset didnt help. Also no luck with Preferential Treatment tool to check for corrupted preference files, it didnt find corrupted plist files. -
Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Blacks Out Without Warning
Quick Summary of Problem: My MacBook Pro is currently shutting down without warning. It would be more accurate to say that the screen goes blank but the machine remains on as can be heard by the fan. Nothing resolves it without powering down and restarting. It has occurred when attached to a power source or via the battery.
My machine specs: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15” with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/nVidia GeForce GT 330M with 512MB, anti-glare 15” screen with max resolution 1680 x 1050). Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 2013-001 Security Patch installed.
I have AppleCare which commenced when I first bought the machine in July 2010.
System Profiler says my battery condition is ‘Normal’. Cycle count: 610.
Detailed Summary of Problem: Back in January, my MacBook Pro shut down several times without warning. Each time, I was creating selections on high resolution imagery in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Not long after, I saw the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ relased on Feb 12 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633) and installed it via Software Update. By coincidence or not, my MBP behaved much better afterwards and the seemingly random blank screens requiring a restart disappeared.
But then I installed the ‘Security Update 2013-001 (Snow Leopard)’(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1642) via Software Update and that’s the only thing I can really remember changing to my system. Since then, the black-outs have reappeared. As before, I was usually using Photoshop and working with high resolution imagery. However, one time the machine blacked-out, I was simply doing a two-finger scroll on the built-in trackpad whilst in Chrome (Version 25.0.1364.172).
The blackout has occurred twice now not being connected to power, and twice with it being connected to a wall socket. Needless to say, I lost work in Photoshop (even though I’ve begun to save more regularly) and now it feels like it’s a ticking time bomb and I don’t know when it’s going to go off.
One thing I’ve found rather odd is that in the crash log, the kernal version doesn’t seem right for Snow Leopard:

Fixes I’ve tried:
1) Resetting the NV-RAM has done nothing. (was suggested
2) I’ve tried reinstalling the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ by downloading the manual installer from Apple, however it now says ‘Alert: This software is not supported on your system’ which in a way makes sense given I’d already applied the firmware update, but a more accurate message along the lines of ‘This firmware update has already been installed’ would be more reassuring.
3) If all else fails, I could resort to copying over a backup I created with Carbon Copy Cloner, which was done before I reinstalled the 2013-001 Security Update for Snow Leopard. But that’s a bit of a headache too, because my documents I’ve updated since the backup will be out of sync. Another reason this isn’t a great solution is that I can’t take advantage of the 2013-001 security update, nor future ones.
Any suggestions? There’s probably no good time for something like this to happen, but this is a particularly bad time – I’m currently beginning design and finished art freelancing and brushing up on some applications I haven’t used in years. Nor am I going to make an impression meeting with recruiters without my folio being presented from my MBP.
I’ve already booked a Genius appointment 2.5 days from now, but all help and ideas greatly appreciated!

However, the issue described by TS4088 is not a soldering problem. It is a Latent Defect -- a flaw built into certain batches of those chips from the day they were packaged and installed.
If your Mac fails the VST test used to detect this Latent Defect, re-flowing the solder is likely to have NO EFFECT on its performance -- the solution is the remove the defective chip and replace with a good one.
There certainly can be problems in these and other Macs where a re-flow would be beneficial. But I caution Readers not to generalize your solution to Macs that are known to fail VST. Re-flow alone will not solve the Latent Defect problem. -
In my Macbook Pro, on a few occassions, the apple menu bar blacks out. its displayed as a negative image. The desktop wallpaper get greyed out and i get a blank screen as wallpaper. No idea why this happens. I reset the system and issue gets resolved.

My app Injustice Gods Among Us is really being a pain. It started blacking out around a week ago, and it wont let me in to the game. I was told to delete the app, and redownload and rebbot my Ipad, but it didnt work. And I lost all my characters, like Lobo, Batgirl, Darkseid, and a ton of others. Can anyone help me? My neighbor got the app, and his works fine! What the heck.

Prior saved .pdf sometimes has blacked out content. How can I prevent this?
I use Mac OS 9 Maverick, read email in Mail.app and Yahoo.Mail, switch between Safari and Firefox for browsing (because Safari does not allow Flash videos to appear on pages). When I want to save an email or an html file or report as .pdf, I use Command-P and select Save As PDF from the Print popup. Normally, I can go back years later and read the .pdf document in the Home File I filed it in using Adobe Reader. Sometimes, however, when I open a .pdf file--and I cannot tell prior to opening it--all of the content has been blacked out. It is as if someone redacted the document after filing it, which I don't do.
How can I prevent these redactions? The content being blacked out varies from extremely personal and important health files to simple email correspondence I want to save. Sometimes I have paid for a document and have to contact the publisher to send hard copy via USPS due to this problem.
What am I missing here? Do I need a specific plug-in? Is there a way to retrieve the blacked-out content from my computer stored file?

Macbook Pro- shortly after upgrading to free software upgrade to Mavericks- 10.9.5-
has suddenly been freezing up, but went more directly to 'shutting down,' CRASHING on its own. Most of the time, if I'm even able to successfully get the laptop turned back on, it only stays up/on for a few moments before repeating the failure. The failure is often accompanied with the monitor going 'blank,' or most typically either 'blacking out,' or going blue/green or grey screen with lines or grids all over the monitor. All Desktop visibility, functions or applications in process disappears. This has caused repetetive 'forced shut downs,' which I never usually do, unless prompted to because I have no choice like this.... Or as I said, the computer itself will just shut down and turn off by itself.... Can anyone tell me what this issue is, and I'm pretty sure other Mac users have seen this exact thing I'm describing happening on their laptops, with their systems or on their monitors. Someone please explain or point me in the right direction... as naturally my laptop just went out of warranty as well.... And I don't know if this means the entire system is basically corrupted, dying/dead... and or if it is a monitor issue, a hardware issue, software issue or if there is anything that can be done to restore, repair it, etc.? Also another thing I have noticed ever since getting this laptop- (few years old now...) is that it runs VERY HOT... has in fact burned my lap /skin many times... and seems like the fan or internal operating systems/functions are also perhaps not functioning properly. Can this also be causing the problem? Or is it a corruption or virus of some kind? etc. Thank you.What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.
