Black plastic strip over hinge on july '11 macbook air

The plastic piece which is visible when the notebook is completely closed is the part that is loose. I can slide it side to side, and it makes noise occasionally. The screen doesn't seem to have any play in it, but im not sure if it is just an outer cover over the hinge or the actual hinger. My wife's macbook air has the same problem. Anyone else experience this or have any fixes?

Yes, I have this exact issue! It slides left to right but the actual hinge has no problem closing or opening and is not loose at all. It seems it is just the plastic hinge cover. Does anyone know if this is normal?

  • Black plastic strip that connects the screen to the keyboard is cracked, ideas for fixing without replacing the whole screen?

The black plastic strip that connects the top portion (screen) to the bottom portion (keyboard) is cracked and getting pretty bad. I brought it in to get fixed, but I was told it is just a costmetic problem. I am worried that soon it will be cracked completely. Is there any way to just replace that portion without replacing the entire screen?

I completely agree. If it does crack all the way through, does it effect the use of the computer though?
I'm just trying to plan ahead.

  • Macbook Air July 2013 freezes (Boot camp Win 7 Pro)

    Hi all,
Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue? I am running win 7 pro 64bit sp1 with the latest boot camp drivers (updated via osx boot camp utiliy a few days ago) and all windows updated up to date. Everything works fine and has installed, but at least once every day the whole computer just freezes up and becomes non responsive. All I can do is power it off and do a hard reset. This is on a brand new July 2013 Macbook Air 13" with a 512gb PCIe Samsung SSD.
I have taken it into Apple to take a look at, but they refuse to acknowledge the problem saying it is a software issue with Windows. They did their diag tests in-store and everything came up ok. But the funny thing is, the laptop still freezes every day! And all the errors point to a hardware issue.
Anyway, I did a bit of googling and from the sounds of it it is most likely a faulty motherboard/controller chip. I just wanted to hear from others out there if they were able to fix it any other way other than getting a replacement laptop? Are there any diag tools that I can run to see if the SSD controller is faulty?
Here are the errors I keep getting
    Event ID 11
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR3
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR6

I don't think that PCIe which is only Samsung device would use any other NAND.
I do think Apple is responsible to provide drivers and enable AHCI mode for it to function properly.
Was concerned that too many people give far too little space to Windows partition. And that they don't set aside the 11% that Samsung Magician would recommend setting if it could.
I first read about the MBA and its new SSDs here:
2013 MacBook Air Disassembled and Benched - Samsung 256GB PCIe SSD ...
    And Samsung PR:
    http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/news-events/press-releases/ detail?newsId=12921
    > Samsung started providing the new SSD to major notebook PC makers earlier this quarter. The XP941 lineup consists of 512, 256 and 128GB SSDs.
So no matter what size it is still going to be Samsung NAND all the way through.
PCI Express-based SSDs for Ultrabooks, then. The new XP941 series uses PCIe's wider data path to read at nearly 1.4GB/s
    http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/17/samsung-makes-first-pcie-based-ssd-for-ultrab ooks/
So maybe searches on "XP941" can help turn up tips from around the net.

  • Can I daisy chain two Thunderbolt displays to the new MacBook Airs (July 2011)?

I have last year's MacBook Air -- probably the best Mac I've ever had and I've had a few. I looked at using multiple displays last year, but the reviews for the major 3rd-party solutions really demonstrate how little is possible.
I see Apple says you can double up on displays for the MacBook Pro (I have a pre-Thunderbolt one unfortunately), what about the new (July 2011) MacBook Airs?
    Anyone tried? Anyone know?
(I have a 30" Dell display, but it is, and always has been, very flakey when it comes to connecting to a Mac laptop).

You can thank Intel for that.
The sandy bridge chips all have integrated graphics, and before they were released -- they took nvidia to court claiming they didn't have a "license" to make GPU chipsets for the sandy bridge line.  Intel won, and consumers lost.
The solution most manufacturers are using for notebooks is graphics switching (nvidia optimus like technology) -- which basically uses a discreet GPU along side the intel integrated GPU, and switches between the two instantaenously based on the workload and \ or battery life -- this is how the macbook pro's with the ATI gpus work.
Since there isn't enough space physically inside a macbook air for a discreet GPU, and since no company in the world is allowed to make a shared GPU for intel's sandy bridge chipsets -- the only solution is to use the integrated graphics that is in the processors -- Intel HD 3000.  Intel basically has the monopoly here...there is no legal solution in the world another company can provide thanks to our wonderful court system
Wanna know the really sad part about the Intel HD 3000 GPU?  The Nvidia 320M (the GPU used in the previous model 2010 macbook air -- chip was released to the market in April of last year) actually out performs it in some benchmarks -- that's right, a 1+ year old shared gpu from nvidia outperforms Intel's 2011 integrated graphics.
    Intel ***** at graphics, period.
The only other solution I can think of is for you to get the "Echo Express" product from Sonnet:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/index.html
It's basically an external bay that will allow you to put a PCIe GPU inside it, and it would then connect via thunderbolt to the macbook air.
You would then use the minidisplayport connectors on the PCIe GPU to connect to the apple displays -- I believe any modern ATI or Nvidia GPU can support up to 3 or 4 external displays.
Unfortunately, sonnet's bay is not released yet, and you'd also have to make sure the PCIe GPU you get supports both thunderbolt AND os x....so yeah, kind of slim pickens right now
    EDIT:
So apparently the macbook pros can daisy chain two thunderbolt displays -- Apple has a picture of it on their site:
    http://storeimages.apple.com/1867/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MC914_AV 7?wid=1200&hei=1200&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0, 0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
I just bought a new mac air too...I was gonna get a mbpro but they are just too expensive -- the one I configured was at around 3000$
Wanna know what's lame about using the thunderbolt display with the mac air?  So the new mac air has the magsafe connector on one side and the thunderbolt connector on the other -- they're not on the same side like the macbook pro is (see picture) -- so basically the cable is going to have to slack around the back of the macbook air -- who designed that?  Must have been smoking some good meth ;p

  • Black plastic part under the screen is loose (MBA 11,6)

The black plastic part under the screen is a little loose. If you press with one finger you push it in and it will move a bit. Anybody else got this problem?

Hi, was it covered under your one year warranty, I opened my Macbook Air one day and heard a crack, when I looked in the back of the computer the hing had broken and something was hanging out of the back. When I tried to close it the screen turned green and then went off, so I took it to repair however was told it probably wasn't covered on the warrant. From googling the issue it appears that many other users have experienced the same thing. I'm assuming if enough users complain it will eventually become covered!

  • When clearing jam, little plastic strip came out. HP Officejet Pro 8500A

when clearing a jam with both lids up, we accidentally also grabbed a plastic strip that is about 0.4 in wide and 18 in long. It looks like the black and white negatives we used to receive with our pictures. I need to put it back in correctly. Where does it go and how do I reinstall it? HP Officejet pro 8500A.

The strip is called the encoder strip, it is used by the printer to keep track of where the carriage is located.  If the printer is turned on without this strip in position the carriage will likely slam to the side, perhaps damaging the printhead.
The post here may help reattach the encoder strip. This is not an easy task.  First check the ends of the strip.  There should be rectangular mounting holes.  If these are damaged you will need to repair them, perhaps with strong tape and then gutting matching holes in the tape.  I do not have an Officejet 8500A here, but the post here has information for a different printer that should still be relevant.  Basically you will need to attach the right end in the tang on the printer, then thread the encoder strip through the carriage, then attach the left side. Be careful to thread the encoder strip properly through the back of the carriage.  Once the strip is attached move the carriage gently from side to side to make sure there are no obstructions.  Do not plug the printer back in until you have verified the strip is properly attached and threaded.

  • Apple IMac 27 has a problem. Random black screen. Over 1 year without any fix

Apple IMac 27 has a problem.
    Random black screen.
Over 1 year without any successful fix.
    IMac 27 10.8.4 (12E55) - bought in 2010
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 Mhz RAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
The IMac computer screen goes black randomly but the machine still running beyond.
In order to go back to normal i need to awake the computer by hitting with the pointer a hot corner previously created " sleep mode" ( top left ).
..the black screen would come back after one second again..and then again and then again and then again..with different intervals..sometime 2 seconds after the other, sometime as soon as appears the user login screen.
I took the machine to an Apple Store two times over one year, they opened, cleaned it but they didn't replace anything has they could not understand what they real problem was. I was happy for that because they didn't try to make me spend money on something which was not going to solve my issue for sure.
Last time i kindly asked them to inspect everything meticulously, part by part, i left the machine with them for over 2 months. They couldn't understand why this was happening..after couple of weeks, 5 more machines came in with the same problem.
On some of them., upon request of the client they changed the graphic card but apparently this was not the fix, the problem come back again. Apparently changing the graphic card or the screen or else it didn't solve any problem to anyone. I'm almost thinking to "trough it out of the window"..we all spend money for this machines and i think we need to know if Apple is looking in to this or not.
Lately i tried to do an SMS RESET and PRAM RESET, it feels it got better a little but problem still coming back.
Also, all usb  devices are disconnected and the problem still there
Below you will see a copy of the console report. I honestly don't understand much of it as i'm not a computer guy.

I'm now thinking to try to take the machine to its original firmware and see if it still does it, does anyone have any sugestion?
I use a lot photoshop and other image software, this computer is essential for my work. For more then one year this issue caused me problems.
Luckly i have a Macbook Pro too and i managed to do some of my work there. At last I was thinking to buy an external screen and attach it to the Macbook pro in order to work on my big images. But who wants to spend money again!!!???? This is not a fixture, this is silly. I wish to have my IMAc working again.
The warranty it's obviously over and this problem happened right after the warranty was over...
I write this post because i'm so tired of this issue and online nothing can be found apart from posts from so many people that have the same problem and no fixture has been found.
The only fixture seams to be to buy a new computer... Ole'!!!..new money flowing in in the cashier!! forget it!!! i would rather change company if apple doesn't respond to this.
For over 10 years i have been a Apple owner..
When this problem appears it's like someone it's playing a joke at you...
    Comments welcome..
    Thanks

Hi, I've seem to have found out the source of the problem.
The issue is related to heat, and an iMac 27" gets hot pretty fast.
If I boot the iMac straight after first start into Windows 7 I seem to get a lit built-in display at all times. I can also boot OS X first and then into Windows 7 and the built-in screen get lit every time as long as the iMac isn't hot.
Strange thing is that the monitor connected to the display port gets lit every time. So I can only assume that the heat only interfere with output to the built-in LED screen.
So this iMac is going to an Apple premium reseller for service, and I'll tell you guys how it went.

  • Plastic of the hinges make noises

My Macbook pro early 2011 15'' make a little noise when i open or close the dispalay. Is like a "plap" and it's at the level of the plastic of the hinges, and i think that is the plastic that make noises. Have you ever had this problem? If yes what did yo do? Do you think that i should call the assistence (i have bought it 3 weeks ago) or it's a "normal" noise? Sorry for my bad english but i'm italian! Thank you!

The plastic hinge cover can bind and, if it does, it can cause a noise.  I'd suggest opening and closing the clamshell, while pressing on various locations of the plastic hinge cover.  That will make one location "tighter" and another "looser", and can confirm if it's a problem or not.  I could propose a solution but, since your computer is under warranty, I suggest that you return it to be inspected by an authorized repair technician.

  • Gluing the black plastic

dropped my iphone on a rocky area and a little tiny piece of the corner above the stainless band of the black plastic sort of smushed up. i pushed it back down but I'd like to put a drop of super glue here to makes sure it doesn't come loose.
is this a iphone4 copasetic thing to do?
    thanks.

Yes. That is serious. Take it to Apple and ask them to check it out for you.

  • Black plastic piece fell out of printer!

I'm not sure where this black plastic part is supposed to go in my printer. I was messing around and moving the printer then I noticed this black piece on floor of my room. The black plastic part has teeth on it and its a flat square. Does anyone know where it goes? Is it broken? I have a Photosmart 6520.

    karliejw
    Yes, it is broken.
Black plastic bits with teeth are not supposed to fall out of your printer.
Does the mystery printer still work?
If the printer no longer works, then regardless of "what it is" it was important.
If the printer works, you are OK.
If the printer does not work, gather up the broken bit and the printer :  You can take it to a tech, take it to the IT department at your school, or take it to the nearest trash bin.
You can call HP, too.  If you can talk to a printer tech, they might be able to help you identify the part.
You will need to tell HP what kind of printer you have -- lots of printers have black parts in them.

  • Itouch 1st generation black plastic insert on back corner

Hello, the little black plastic insert on the back corner has popped out and cannot be found.  I know this somehow covers or aids the wifi connection.  Where can I find a replacement for this, and is it necessary?  I was only able to find one online site that listed the small plastic piece at almost $30...!!
    Thanks for the help

It is just a dust cover.  However the real metal antenna appears to be attached to the plastic.  You do need the metal part.  See the forst set of phots in the following:
