Referr to device documentation to troubleshoot: print cartridge problem (black)  Officejet 4500
Changed cartridges and prints a few times and comes up again.

I see you are experiencing cartridge issues. I would like to help.
I would recommend removing the ink cartridges, and perform a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend following this document on an 'Incorrect Print Cartridge' or 'Print Cartridge Problem' Message Displays on the Computer.

    Hello-
    You can clean a couple different ways. If you have software installed you can do it either through "Solution Center" (909 model) or through Printer Assistant (910 model)
    You can also perform a printhead cleaning from the front panel of the printer.
    909 model : press the wrench button, then tools, then clean printhead.
    910 model : press setup icon, then tools, clean printhead.

I have tried deleting and resetting printer and re-installing update 6 times. Last update attempt showed none available??? I can’t load the software directly from HP because their only option is to use the software update option on the mac....frustrated!!! Help!!
    I get blank pages that just run through the printer and a stats window that just 33% complete and goes no further.

    I am going on the guess that an old driver is still installed...
    Use Finder Go > go to folder, and go to /Library/Printers and delete the HP folder(s).
    Reset the Printing System:
    OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
    Now, Add the printer in Print & Scan prefs.

    I have a Office Jet 4500 G510n and a MacBook Pro 15 late 2006 Model 2, Ver 10.6.8
    I upgraded the HD to a SSD and everything works find except the printer. I can go to Utility and the TEST PAGE prints OK.
    However, on STATUS it reads: "error/library/Printers/hp/cups/inkjet1.driver/contents/macos/injet/failed
    I have checked on drivers and all I saw were for the "extra Page" ...

    From research on this HP Support site, I found that in Mac OSX they auto download updates for printing. Did not think about transfering my old HD to a SSD that those updates would follow... they did not. So... I downloaded all the updates (driver)to my new SSD and the HP Printer works!

    The customer Participation Program is taking up so much space that I want to remove it from my laptop.

    couple of questions about this:
    Are you scanning from the printer, or with software on the computer? If from the computer, are you initiating the scan from Windows, HP software, or Word? 
    If you put a legal size document in the feeder, and press scan, unless the defaults have been changed to letter size, it should scan the entire legal size sheet. You should be able to go into the settings and change that if the default has been set to letter.

  • Office Jet 4500 Sleep Mode

    We  installed a Office Jet 4500 Wireless printer 4-6 weeks ago.  Everything is good accept it occassionally goes into 'sleep mode' when it has not been used for a couple of days.  After trying several combinations of buttons, we cannot figure out how to get it back into normal operating mode without unplugging it.  The manual is silent on this issue.  Anybody have the magic code for waking up this machine after it has gone into sleep mode?  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Same problem here.   I followed the instructions to supposedly turn off the sleep mode, but all that did was reset the entire machine--including the 85 speed dials I had entered.   HP tech support is clueless about this problem.

    Why can't we select "Black print cartridge only" for printer "hp deskjet 5652" in windows 7 (64bit)?
    In "Preferences" we see this:
    Finishing -> [x] Print on both sides
    Color -> [x] Print In Grayscale
    [ ] Black print cartridge only <<<<<<<Greyed out when "Print on both sides" is selected. WHY?
    In windows xp this setting was available.
    I did a test, printing out this image first in XP then in Win7:

    In win xp we can select "Black print cartridge only", even when doing double side printing.
    The print came out perfect, no colours were used.
    In Win7 we are forced to use "High Quality" when we select "Print In Grayscale". The result was terrible, since my color toner is almost empty, and COLORS WERE USED IN PRINT even though we selected "print in greyscale".
    So how can we enable "Black print cartridge only" in windows 7 for this printer when doing "double sided printing"?

  • Black Print Cartridge Only Printing

    I program my computer for the C7180 to print using the black print cartridge only, but it still uses ink from the color cartridges while printing in grayscale.  How do I get the printer to use only the black print cartridge?

    I don't have this kind of printer. However, intuitively, the "brute force technique" should work as in the case of my DeskJet F2480: please remove (if possible) the color cartridge from the printer and then try printing.
    Additional advice: please carefully check all the available settings of the program from which you are printing. I can guess that there can be some commonly used settings you see just having pressed "Print", and also some "Advanced" ones, etc...

  • Can print but not scan in Windows 8.1 to HP Office Jet 4500 510n-z

    New computer over the weekend with Windows 8 installed.  Upgraded to 8.1online   My HP Office Jet all-in-one 4500 prints fine, but I have no way to scan.   I tried using the HP website to download and install the full driver.  When it gets to the installation page, it just hangs on the page trying to communicate with my printer.   Cannot get past that page.   
    I also tried the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility.   It recognizes my HP all-in-one, but when it goes to the first step of communicating with the selected product, it gets about 3/4 done and then just hangs.
    I have tried disabling my firewall.  Still no luck.   
    I tried going to Device Manager and having it searched for updated drivers.  It says the current driver is up-to-date.
    I tried Windows Fax and Scan.  When I choose New Scan, it says I have no scanner installed.
    Somewhere there is a big error in this mess that is not allowing my printer and Windows to allow this driver to be fixed.  HELP!

    I understand that when you are installing the full featured software, that it hangs on communicating with the product. I have included the following document, 'The Progress Bar on the Software Installation Stops or Stalls'. This will walk you through different steps to try and get the software installed.
    If the above document fails to resolve the issue, please let me know if there are any specific error messages that you do get.

  • Office Jet 4500 G510

    Am having continual problems with this printer. Cartridge has been replaced. Now using reman. Have cleaned cartridge and aligned heads. Have error message reading 'print cartridge problem,[Black] refer to device documentation to troubleshoot.  Test print papers show the ink is fine as it prints deep on the black type. Ink level when read shows fine. New cartridge has only printed out about 10 sheets. I can open door and remove cartridge, then reinsert it and it will print perfectly for one page then beeps and shuts down. Refuses to print anything again until I repeat this process. Anybody got any ideas of what to do?

    Remove the ink cartridges, look at the electrical connections on them (lots of gold dots) and clean them if needed.  Look at the mating surface in the printer and do the same.
    If that does not work, reset the printer - turn it off, unplug power from the back of the unit for a minute, plug back in and turn on.

    I've tried to install 3 new black cartridges.  Each time I get an error message that says, "Print Cartridge Incorrectly Installed."  When I replace the empty cartridge, that message disappears.  I know I am installing the new ones correctly!  Please HELP.

    @ Gordon-B -  Thanks for the response. If one has done the cleanings and the other steps listed in the above links n the last post, one would want to replace the cartridge in the printer as it might be faulty. If after one has done that; they find that the print quality is still not producing the desired results, one would be looking at product replacement.
