Black rectangles after 10.4.5 Upgrade?

Help! I just did the automatic update to 10.4.5 and now I have black rectangles around many of the field windows, desktop icons, etc. It's especially annoying while using Quark.
If I open a window box, the black rectangle superimposes itself over my layout.
Is anyone else having the same problem?
Can I uninstall 10.4.5 and go back to the former version?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

katarina,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Mac OS X 10.4: Computer speaks unexpectedly, or a black box unexpectedly appears around a file, folder, or other item: If a black outline (or box) unexpectedly appears around a file, folder, icon, button, or other item when you click it, VoiceOver is probably enabled. Your computer might also be unexpectedly speaking items that you click on.
If you don't want VoiceOver on, turn it off in the Universal Access preference pane, or by pressing Command-F5 (or Fn-Command-F5 if you have an iBook or PowerBook).;~)

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after kdm upgrade

    Hi,
I just did a pacman -Syu and at the next reboot when xdm was supposed to appear the only thing I got was a black screen. It's pitch-black as if turned off, not as if the background was black (laptop lcd)
If I just enter my password blindly, it enters KDE and launches all the normal processes so it appears to be just a the screen being black.
    This is what I upgraded:

  • Black Screen After Upgrading to Windows 8

    Hi
    I'm experiencing a black screen after upgrading a Dell N5050 B890 to Windows 8.
Tried to refresh the installation but the problem persited. re-installed the Windows 8, the machine logged in successfully but the problem arose again after reboot.
    Urgent assistance needed

    This problem is solved...
I guess the problem is concerned with the display module controller in the BIOS which is having a slight compatibility issue with windows 8.
This issue is solved by updating the BIOS of your Laptop/PC to the latest version. You can download the latest BIOS from the website of the Laptop company/Motherboard Company.
But for updating the BIOS, you have to start your computer/Laptop for at least one time in Normal Mode. So here are the steps to do so...
    1) Boot the Laptop/PC.
    2) After the boot screen (The Circle Animation & Windows 8 logo), you will be presented by the lovely & awesome blank screen.
    3) Wait for 1 minute so that drivers load into the memory.
    4) Press the Power button of your laptop/PC for only a moment (Just Press and release it quickly. Don't hold. We don't want to shut down).
    5) This will force the laptop/PC to go into Sleep mode.
    6) When the laptop/PC goes in sleep, the laptop fan & other sounds will stop.
    7) After 4-5 seconds, press the power button again & release it quickly.
    8) Voilllaa!!! The laptop/PC starts & you are presented with the lock screen. Now..... Login! What are you waiting for! :P
This is not the permanent solution. It just lets you start you Laptop/PC.
After updating the BIOS, I strongly suggest that you must download the latest graphics driver for your Computer/Laptop to avoid any further issues.

  • Ipad mirroring on Apple TV getting black screen after os upgrade to 7.0.3

Ipad mirroring works in 7.0.2. After upgrading to 7.0.3, on mirroring the screen goes black. Do we need to upgrade Apple TV or is this something else?

I have the same problem since my upgrade to iOS 8. black screen, no mirroring. It worked perfect until the latest iOS 7 version on my iPad 2

  • Black Screen After Windows 8 64-bit Upgrade (Clean Install) on TouchSmart IQ508A (IQ500 series)

    Hi there,
Just installed Windows 8 and am getting a black screen after booting up like many others. I currently have disabled the graphics driver and this has solved the black screen issue but I can no longer use my web cam for Skype (although web cam works for W8 Camera App oddly).
To date I have tried the following:
Loading up the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website
Attempting to use the drivers for Windows 7 both in compatability mode and normally. I unzipped SP44488 to get this working
I know many others are having this problem so I really would  like someone from HP to respond and state whether a Windows 8 display driver for the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS is being developed.
I ran the compatability wizard prior to the clean install and it came up with no issues so I am very disappointed I am having these problems.
I've found out that HP have a customised version of the above card so that explains why the Nvidia drivers dont work so I believe HP is therefore obligated to provide a driver.
If anyone else is having similar issues please respond as this will hopefully lead to more action.
    cheers
    Steve

I'm in the same boat. On my IQ804, the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS card crashes when I use NVidia's latest Windows 8 driver and Microsoft's LIVE UPDATE drivers.  I have to resort to the Standard VGA driver in order for the pc not to crash into a black screen.
I read on another forum you can try installing a July 2012 version of the driver from NVidia and that should solve the problem.  I tried it once. Using the July 2012 version, the screen would stay on longer, but eventually it crashes into a black screen...but definitely more usable than the latest from NVidia and Microsoft.
I too have heard that HP used a customized version of the graphics card and that's why neither HP nor NVidia's drivers work.
I also tried installing the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS drivers for Windows 7 that I downloaded from the HP website.  It didn't work either.  It actually failed to install altogether, saying my system is incompatible.
As is, the pc works fine.  But videos and games that require motion is noticably choppy.
    Any help from HP??

  • Why are my RAW images not being read, showing up as black rectangles?

I installed the newest version of iPhoto because the RAW images were not readable. And after doing a little research, I needed to upgrade. Now, it is acting like it can see them, but they are black rectangles. Except the first one, of like 300, the bottom half of the photo is there, but the top half is blacked out.

    And
    What camera?

  • [SOLVED] Opera + Youtube + Flashplugin = Black Rectangle

    Hi guys,
I just encountered a problem with Youtube, Opera and the Flashplugin.
I updated my System this afternoon and pacman installed the
newest version of Opera. Till this point everything was fine. After the
update the flashplugin seems to work only on channels of youtube users,
on the normal 'white' youtube layout the flashplayer didn't appear.
There's just a black rectangle where the player should be.
Clicking doesn't lead to anything than showing up opera's dialog.
It seems that the plugin crashed due to the layout of the site?!?
    Here's the /var/log/pacman.log

    Hi guys,
sorry for the last response, I wasn't at home over the weekend and there was no way
    to test the suggestions.
awbs wrote:Check to make sure when your on YouTube opera is identifying itself as Opera and not another internet browser by right clicking the youtube page > Edit Site Preferences > Network > Browser Identification > "Identify as Opera".
    Checked that, and it's activated.
There are no extensions which could affect the performance or the behavior of opera.
    And I don't use qtcurve.
It's strange, it seems that after the update opera broke but there are no
other post from other users. Installed firefox and it worked, same for dwb.
    Anybody other ideas?
    Thanks for the great support

  • B&W G3 gets Black Rectangle on Boot - Hangs

My B&W G3 will not boot OS X 10.4 anymore. It worked fine before. Now when it boots I get the Apple logo then I get a solid black rectangle in the middle of the screen and it hanges.
I put the 10.4 DVD in the drive and pressed C on boot. It starts to boot from the DVD then bang I get the solid black rectangle.
I took all the cards out except the video card. I droped the RAM to 1 stick (256 MB). No help.
It is booting from an Apple 6 GB IDE drive.
It is a revision 1 board.
I replaced the battery, pressed the CUDA ect.
I put in OS 9.2 CD and tried to boot from it as well. No luck. It hangs as well.
    No network is connected.
I tried USB keyboard & Mouse and ADB. No help.
Why am I getting the solid black rectangle on the screen after the Apple logo?
    Thanks!

  • Why are iCal alarms coming up with a black rectangle?

Why are iCal alarms coming up with a black rectangle? I'm running 10.3.9 and iCal v. 1.5.2. This started after I did software updates this week.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I solved it in my case by going to System Preferences>Internet & Network>QuickTime>Advanced, then clicking the checkbox to Enable Flash. I also had to quit and restart iCal.
I think the Quicktime715 update that recently came out had something to do with it.
It seems that the black box is supposed to be a movie of a vibrating alarm clock, and apparently that movie uses Flash.
I hope this fix works for you too.

  • Black rectangle follows cursor

I just updated to 10.4.8 and when the computer restarted I now have a black rectangle that is centered on my cursor and follows the cursor around the screen. It is just the black outline of a rectangle. Any ideas?

    Hi, kmroxo.
This is a bug in the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update. For details and the workaround, see my "Black rectangle appears after Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update" FAQ.

  • Black rectangle top right

A semi-transparent black rectangle has appeared top right, just below the menu bar, about 3 inches by 1.5 inches. I cannot drag or resize it but can click throught it to items underneath.I think it appeared as I was upgrading Stuffit Expander to 10.0.2. I have voice-over turned off. A restart has not cured it. Any ideas?

    Hi, Richard.
Since you've indicated that VoiceOver is off:
    1. If you see a single black rectangle that follows the mouse around, you have enabled the Preview Rectangle for Zoom. The Preview Rectangle appears if you have the following System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing preferences set:• Zoom On and...
    • ...in the Zoom "Options" sheet:• "Show preview rectangle when zoomed out..." selected; and
    • have set Maximum Zoom anywhere above the minimum setting, i.e. >1.
If Zoom is not required and On is selected, select Off.
    2. Have you used a third-party utility that enables the hidden "Minimize desktop to a box" feature of Exposé? In prior versions of Mac OS X, enabling this hidden (and not ready for prime time) feature could create dead spotson the screen in the region of said "box."
    3. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    4. I also suggest following these general iMac G5 troubleshooting steps:1. See if your computer's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
    2. Rule out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer. For additional details, see my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
    3. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    4. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    5. See also the iMac Service & Support site.
    6. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    7. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    8. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.Good luck!

  • Display - Black rectangle on upper right corner.

After some reboots, for any reason (updating software, etc.), a black rectangle approximately 3" wide and 1" high shows in the upper right corner of the display, about 1/3" from the display sides.
Restarting the laptop, sometimes twice, makes the black rectangle disappear.
I have been unable to recreate any situation where the black rectangle appears, or disappears. It seems to be random.
What could be the cause, and remedy?
Although not very young, the laptop works fine.
Another question, NOT related: is it possible to use a SATA internal HD in this PCC laptop? Its current HD is an ATA Toshiba.
    TIA
    Charly

My guess is bad video RAM, but I suppose it could be a bad graphics chip or even a bad LCD connection. Try scrounging an external display and see if it has the same problem. Try gently flexing and squeezing the screen a little when this crops up. Unfortunately, bad VRAM is a permanent part of the main logic board.
No, SATA drives won't work inside the PB G4. I think I have heard of adapters, but I doubt they would fit.

  • Why does "\n" become a solid black rectangle

The problem happens when i put a string named "myString" into a file, which is produced by my program as a text file. "myString", which holds something like this "abcd" + "\n" + "efg". But after the program ran and i opened the produced file, the format of the content looks like this: "abcd solid_black_rectangle efg" is still in one line, and "\n" is displayed as a solid black rectangle.
i havent met this sort of problem before and have no idea how can i fix it up. So, could anyone give me some tips? thanx in advance.

I presume you are working on a windows machine. The command, in this os, for a new line is "\r\n". If you only use "\n" windows will show this character as a box (The "\n" is a newline on a Unix platform).
    Good Luck,
    Kal El
