Black Screen 20-30 sec. Random

Several searches, no answer found.
At random times (seems to me) but several times while getting ready to play iSpy children's game, the screen changes to black, all black lasting only a short time then returning to previous state.
At first I clicked away, ctrl/alt/esc and other ideas. Eventually, I got to the point where I waited. Seems to be about 20-30 seconds. I am wondering if I'm inadvertently doing this? This started about 2 weeks ago and only happened occasionally. Now, it's happened enough for me to know that it is an issue.
Last night, after a black out, the scree return to previous state but the picture was messed up. Not the pixels, but like parts of the screen were scooted to the left, little rectangles of parts of the screen were whited out. I realize that's not a very sophisticated explanation- maybe I can answer a question upon reply to clarify.
I don't think I have done anything different- downloads, upgrades, updates, etc.
I have several apps that diagnose and check for problems and have tried to find an issue with no luck.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Here are a couple of quick thoughts:
--The game might be resetting the screen resolution when it loads. Try having a look at the Preferences for the game after it's up and running and see if there are any options for adjusting how the game handles graphics.
--Create a new user account on your computer and try loading the game from the new account. If the problem goes away, you know the problem is caused by something related to your main user account (BTW it's a useful practice to maintain a unique user account just for troubleshooting purposes).
--If you use Time Machine, a feature of Leopard and Snow Leopard (one of your other posts mentions your machine is running 10.4 Tiger but the profile signature line on that post says you're running 10.5 Leopard), restore the game from a date when the game was running properly.
--Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

  • Tv gives a black screen every 10 sec

I connected mij Mac mini to my tv and it works great. Until I change something to the screensetting or play game with other screensettings. The start flickering. A black screen apears every 10 seconds and the says it lost connection. Does somebody know this problem and maybe how to solve it.

Which Mac Mini? > Finding your Mac OS X version and build information
How much RAM does it have? > Finding your Mac OS X version and build information
Have you upgraded RAM, if so which supplier and what are the spec's of the RAM used?
    1. Shutdown and recheck all of your cables to ensure that all firmly plugged in.
    2. Reset the SMC and PRAM.
SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM and NVRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    3. I mention RAM, because some Mac Mini's have graphic's chips that use the main memory and if the RAM is out of spec it can cause graphic's issues.

  • Black Screen with Apple Logo randomly appears.

HELP! When I'm using my 60 gig 5th gen. ipod...I listen to a song, or watch a movie and after 2-5 the song/movie stops, and the black screen with apple logo appears. It almost seems like the ipod is just reseting itself or something. I don't understand the problem.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello!! I had the same issue. (with the 30 Gig) Eventually, my iPod went berserk, and kept reseting over and over until the battery died.
I did fix it. It's pretty simple, in fact. Warning: ALthough i hate to say it, you need to update to iPod software 1.1. There are several bugs with this update, see the thread with all the replys. However, it seems to be more annoyance than real issue, and 1.1 completely, utterly stoped the apple logo screen. The saving of my battery, and prevention of the resets, to me, outweighs the minor annoyances of glitches with the update.
Glitches i've noticed: holding the menu button no longer turns on/off the back light. Some videos no longer copy to the iPod, despite the fact that iTunes can play them, and the used to copy, and are within iPod's capabilities. They are generally converted with a program other than QuickTime. There are others people hae noticed, but that's all that i've seen so far.
Since you have Mac 10, simply do a software-update, and download all the neccessary software. Update the iPod.
Some videos are not likely going to copy to the iPod. This is due to the update. You need to re-encode them. If you don't want to pay for QT Pro, there's a free utility to covert nearly any video to iPod format. It's called iSquint. (do a search on versiontracker.com) I've used it a lot in the last few days, and it's great! The videos it converts seem perfectly suited to iPod, despite the update! Unfortunately, there seems to be no way around the error iTunes gives you about not-copying videos due to iPods's inability to play a video without a re-encode.
Hopefully, this will help you out!

  • SSL error black screen when using siri random volume when master is set on high iphone 5

my phone keeps saying SSL error and wont work on wifi or on the network i also cant send picture messages i really cant do any thing on the phone and the master vol is set on high and it randomly picks what ever leavl to go off on some times its loud and some times it dont ring at all i have also noticed that when i use siri my screen goes black i have resotred my phone using itunes and i have also exchanged my iphone5 for a different iphone 5 and am having the same problems any tips

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If you make an appointment with an Apple store for a consultation this is the first thing they will tell you to do. Hopefully it gets your phone working correctly again.

  • Black screen for 45 secs before boot

Every time I start my computer, either cold start or a reboot, it takes 15 seconds before I hear the chime, and then it takes another 45 seconds before the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up. At about 43 seconds I hear the fan for my video card turn on. Once it's past that point, everything continues as normal.
I've only been noticing this for the last week. Perhaps that is because I just started using Boot Camp last week. Before that I only restarted for software updates, but I'm pretty sure this problem is new.
Here is what I've tried: repaired permissions on my boot drive; pulled each of my three hard drives from the tower, one at a time; reset PRAM; reset SMC; reinstalled factory memory.
None of these changed anything. Any ideas? I'm assuming it's a hardware problem since pulling the drives didn't change anything. Windows is on a different drive from the Mac OS, so I would think that if it was something with one of the drives, pulling them would have fixed the problem.

Have you tried running the apple hardware test, this should tell you if you have any issues with the actual hard drives themselves. Also diskwarrior to see if there's anything gone wrong with the OS.

  • EMac random black screen - advice needed

I have an eMac G4 1GB, max RAM, OS10.5 Leopard. I have recently had the black screen problem. It randomly turns black, with everything running in the background. The screen then returns to normal a few minutes later. It sometimes runs for hours without a problem, other times it will happen several times a day. The machine runs perfectly otherwise... would be great to fix it if possible.
So far I have tried the following:
    - Opened the eMac and cleaned the interior of dust
    - PRAM reset
    - Replaced the battery (which was dying because the date would reset on unplugging).
Are there any other straightforward things I can try, or is this most probably a hardware failure and ultimately a write-off?
    Any ideas appreciated.

For the Fetcher to show in Activity Monitor, you need to change AM's "Show" setting from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes." The setting is in the top bar of the AM window:
Thus set, some other bandits might show up, too.
To neuter Top Sites so the Fetcher is not activated, go to Safari > Preferences and:
    1) on the General tab, make sure no "open with" option is set to "Top Sites."
    2) uncheck anything mentioning Top Sites in the Bookmarks tab.
    3) go to "Reset Safari..." in the Safari menu and select the two boxes shown here:
    then reset.
That procedure gets rid of a nuisance background process without deleting anything. You can restore Top Sites with a few mousclicks should you need it. On a PPC with limited RAM, I find Top Sites is not my friend.
Even when I upgraded to a hot quad-core i7 iMac, I still turned it off. It;s eye candy I don;t need.
Camino is more respectful of system resources than Safari in my experience.

my ipod touch wont turn on! i pressed the power button and the white apple logo appeared for five seconds and went to a black screen, and then back to the logo for 5 secs and back to the black screen for 5 secs. im not touching my ipod and it is still doing this. i did leave it onover night to update ios, is this why??

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Leaving youtube fullscreen will cause black screen

Whenever I leave a fullscreen youtube video, the screen will turn completely black, not even the mouse cursor is visible anymore.
To "fix" it, I have to switch to a VT via CTRL+ALT+F1 and then back to X via ALT+F7, then everything is back to normal.

emeres wrote:Which graphics card, drivers are you using? Does using xrandr, either switching between two resolutions or just resetting to same resolution, bring your screen back? (Tip: use shortcuts or aliases if you have trouble "typing in dark".)
I'm using intel graphics driver, 915 or 965 (both appears in Xorg.0.log).
I noticed that the black screen thing is somewhat random. It doesn't happen everytime, but it seems random enough that I cannot see any pattern.
Using xrandr to set the currently used resolution (1920x1080) again does not help. However, calling it twice like
    xrandr -s 1280x1024 && xrandr -s 1920x1080
will actually work to "fix" the problem.

  • N82 Black Screen

    Hi, sorry for English first
most of the times when i turn my N82 on, i only get a Black screen and keypad light...i found the only way to turn on phone when it's happen is to remove battery and shake phone !!! .. well i don't know why but it works! .. 16month ago a drop my N82 in water ... i don't know it's related to this or not.. also some times when my phone is working normally again i get a black screen and keypad light .. the only way to turn off the phone is to remove battery. also when this happen when I'm listening to music . i get a continuously beep with the black screen, but when I'm listening to FM Radio. radio continue to play normally while i get back screen ( after 30 secs it turns off ), also network operator say my phone is out of reach when i get black screen, after 30 secs, it says it's turned off. also my phone is out of warranty and i don't access to Nokia Care Center
can some one describe what should i do ?
    thank you.

The effects of water damage is highly unpredictable but one thing that is certain is the fact that it's days are numbered even if you manage to get it working after drying it out.
Damage post water ingress is usually due to corrosion of the electronic parts and only gets worse with time. You managed to get 16 months out of it and that is way more than most. Since this is a hardware issue, it is not something we can help you with here. It is not like we can tell you to change settings or reset the software. You could try bringing it to a Nokia Care Point, but the repair will likely exceed the cost of a replacement.
My suggestion is to backup your phone regularly and invest in a replacement soon.

  • My MacBook Pro turns to black screen randomly

I bought a new MacBook Pro in April 2013 after my old one died after 7 years.  I was super excited.  I bought the 15 inch retina display (early 2013) with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 and 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3.  I am having many issues with my laptop.  I was hoping one of you could help me.
First issue - battery life.  I originally had my computer set to never sleep.  So I would leave it and it would eventually die.  I thought the battery life is horrible.  I would have to charge my laptop twice or more a day.  So I fixed that but my battery life still seems super inefficient.  I am just searching the internet and using iphoto.  I am having to charge it now once a day.  Is this battery life normal?  I brought it into the Apple store and they did some diagnostics test on the battery and found it was working as it should.  It stayed charged for the expected 8 hours.  I'm not sure how because I never get 8 hours EVER.
Second issue - my computer will randomly turn to a black screen.  While I am typing or searching the internet or just using it for whatever.  It turns to a black screen and then I have to hit a button or hit the track pad to get it to turn back on.  When it comes back on, I don't have to type in my password.  It works just as expected.  I cannot duplicate this issue.  I do not have a magnetic bracelet or have my phone or any magnets near my computer.  It had happened 4 times before I brought it into the Apple store.  This is what they checked it in for: Check in for one loop of asd with hdd scan. If unit passes asd attempt to duplicate issue in customer os. Customer has video on desktop named "flickering" to show issue.  So of course because they could not reproduce anything, they returned it to me stating that the hardware was running as it was supposed too.  Never been more frustrated in my life.
Third Issue - When I start up from sleep sometimes the screen flickers before it starts up.  I want to know if this is normal?
Fourth Issue - This is the newest issue that just started today.  When I hit the power button and put the computer to sleep, it takes about 30 seconds for the computer to go to sleep.  This is new to me because it used to happen almost automactically.  So I can press the power button, press sleep the proceed to do things on the computer and then it shuts off.
So I have an appointment for the Genius Bar on Friday.  I thought I might see what all of you have to say.  I am frustrated to say the least.  I paid A LOT of money for this machine and I love Apple products.  I want to be happy with my purchase but I am regreatting it.  What else can I do?  I'm not sure what to say to the techs at the genius bar for them to take me seriously.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Missy,
    Battery Life:
Please connect you notebook to power when it is available.  Your battery has a limited number of charge cycles.  When you must run on the battery, otherwise leave the notebook plugged into a power outlet.  I have a notebook I purchased on 2011 that has 70 charge cycles on it.
You can determine how many charge systes are on your battery by selcting the menu item " >About This Mac..." then click the button "More Info..."  Now click "System Report"  Once System Profiler is running click the text "Power" on the left and locate "Cycle Count"
The higher that number the lower I would expect your battery life to be.

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch (10.6.8) random white/black screens and becomes unresponsive...what is wrong/what to do to solve?

PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS I'M IN NEED OF URGENT HELP. || Heeey everyone! I'm new here. Please don't bite me. =))
Okay. So I have a Macbook Pro, 13 inch (bought Dec. 2010). It's currently running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It had a hard drive crash in Feb. 2012...I had it replaced and lost all my files . It had two major falls (January 2011 & November 2012). Oh, and it also makes this weird grinding noise when you listen closely.
Everything was going fine, until last week, I encountered a kernel panic. Restarted, but was faced with that awkward blank white screen thing at start up. I was told at the Apple Store back when my hard drive crashed in Feb. 2012 that repeated pressing down of the power button can be damaging, so I waited for it to run out of battery to restart. After that, it was normal again. I downloaded OnyX and verified/repaired permissions...nothing was out of the ordinary.
THEN. The next day, in the middle of use, my mac suddenly black-screened. Not a lot of windows were open, and I wasn't doing anything that...will put a strain on anything. It wasn't total pitch-black like the screen looks like when it's turned off. I could still hear the hard drive working and making that grinding sound. I pressed the caps-lock key, and it didn't light up. =))) What, is it off or something? But I can still hear the hard drive there. And it's totally unresponsive. So I decided to restart by pressing down the power button. It was normal again...until a few hours later when it suddenly white-screened. OKAY it's white now. I don't know what that's supposed to mean. But it had the same symptoms as the black-screen. Unresponsive, caps-lock didn't light up, normal grinding sound as if the computer was still on. So I let it run out of battery so I could restart. Upon restarting, I opened Disk Utility and verified disk permissions. There was no damage, nothing again.
I recently got uTorrent (around late December), and thought that it might have been that, so I deleted it and emptied trash. The next day, it did the black screen again. Same with the next day. There's at least one per day. It didn't seem to affect performance at all, everything still ran smoothly. I made sure to check disk permissions to see if everything was okay. And everything was.
Then, about three days passed without any black/white screen and I thought that nuisance was over. BUT NO. Two days ago, I got black-white-white screened and I was...shocked. I let it run out of battery again. =))) Checked Disk Utility, again, nothing. So I decided to get that Software Update thingo that always pops up. I upgraded to 10.6.8. A day passed without the dreaded black/white screens. But yesterday, it white screened once. And today, it white screened again.
I really can't figure out a concrete pattern. It seems random. But what I do know is that:
    1. It happens in the afternoon. All the time, consistently in the afternoon. LOOOL IDK what this is supposed to mean, but its one of the common factors. =))
    2. Most of the time, it happens when I leave the computer for about 30 seconds - 1 minute to get something. Or if I'm watching a long video (like a TV show episode), a period of time where I don't touch the mouse/press any keys. Is that related somehow?
    3. I can't do anything to get it out of the white/black screen except restart. Each time I restart, I check Disk Utility and nothing is wrong.
And yes, I've went to the Apple Store to get this checked. All they said is: "Upgrade to Lion, maybe the error will disappear. If it does, then it was just a software error. If it doesn't...then sorry." LOOOOOOL NOT FALLING FOR THAT, not spending money when I'm not sure it'll fix the error. I want concrete answers.
I'm a student, and my Christmas Break will be over in less than a week. SO I NEED ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD PLEASE. What is wrong with my laptop? Can I fix this? Will opening it in safe mode help in any way? PLEASE I'M DESPERATE.

    Try these:
See what's loading in your login items. - delete the ones you don't need.
Open up Activity Monitor and under all processes, see what's using most of your cpu's resources.  Highlight the ones using the most % CPU and hit quit process.
Next, open up disk utility and verify your disk.  Once that's done, verify disk permissions - repair if needed.
Restart your Macbook and see if it speeds things up for you.
    good luck....

  • Imac G5 will not boot up. there is power but the screen is black. About 30 sec after turning it on, the fan comes on loudly.

I have an old imac G5 (non Intel) The screen went blank but the fan turns very loudly. I cannot reboot the computer.  whenever I start it I get power and black screen and the fan comes on loudly after about 30 secs. I have tried rebooting pressing varius keys, but no luck. I once got the flashing question mark, but I can't get that either. I'd like to reboot from the disc, but I cannot insert a disc. Any help out there??

If zapping the PRAM does not get it working, it's time for a new iMac.  Repairs will not be worth the cost.  Put it towards a new iMac.
I've been there, done that.  Had my burial last summer.

  • Problems with my Ipad Mini Freezing/black screen/power off randomly

So I got my Ipad Mini about 3 weeks ago, maybe a little longer. I have had the first gen Ipad since it came out and never really had a problem with it. I wanted to the Ipad mini for a long time cause my buddies have it and I have loved it ever since I saw one. I finally got one and it worked great for the first week. I got home and installed all my apps. The usual, Spotify, Skype, Drafts, Sirius XM radio, and some other note-taking and organizational apps. Then everything was going well for the next week and a half just fine. I was listening to Sirius XM Radio on the app and my Ipad died. I looked at the screen and pressed the middle button to try to get the radio to turn back on but it didn't. I tried soft reseting it which didn't work and then I finally hard reset it. That worked, and made me a little nervous, but I thought maybe it was just the app. So I went home and uninstalled it and then re-installed it. Fast forward about another week and a half and I have been having the random shut downs every once in a while and just today I opened the skype App and everything just froze. I got a blue screen just like the Blue Screen of Death that a PC would get, the only difference was there was no error code on the blue screen. It was jsut a solid blue screen. I did a hard reset again and then tried to open another one of my note taking apps because I had pretty important stuff on it. I wanted to copy it down but before I could the Ipad completely froze up again. I hard reset it again and now it won't even get past the black screen with the silver apple logo in the middle.
Is anyone else having this problem? is there any way to fix it? Does anyone have any idea why my Ipad mini is acting like this? I mean this is kind of ridiculous. I am extremely frustrated and dissapointed with how my Ipad mini is performing.

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Apple IMac 27 has a problem. Random black screen. Over 1 year without any fix

Apple IMac 27 has a problem.
    Random black screen.
Over 1 year without any successful fix.
    IMac 27 10.8.4 (12E55) - bought in 2010
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 Mhz RAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
The IMac computer screen goes black randomly but the machine still running beyond.
In order to go back to normal i need to awake the computer by hitting with the pointer a hot corner previously created " sleep mode" ( top left ).
..the black screen would come back after one second again..and then again and then again and then again..with different intervals..sometime 2 seconds after the other, sometime as soon as appears the user login screen.
I took the machine to an Apple Store two times over one year, they opened, cleaned it but they didn't replace anything has they could not understand what they real problem was. I was happy for that because they didn't try to make me spend money on something which was not going to solve my issue for sure.
Last time i kindly asked them to inspect everything meticulously, part by part, i left the machine with them for over 2 months. They couldn't understand why this was happening..after couple of weeks, 5 more machines came in with the same problem.
On some of them., upon request of the client they changed the graphic card but apparently this was not the fix, the problem come back again. Apparently changing the graphic card or the screen or else it didn't solve any problem to anyone. I'm almost thinking to "trough it out of the window"..we all spend money for this machines and i think we need to know if Apple is looking in to this or not.
Lately i tried to do an SMS RESET and PRAM RESET, it feels it got better a little but problem still coming back.
Also, all usb  devices are disconnected and the problem still there
Below you will see a copy of the console report. I honestly don't understand much of it as i'm not a computer guy.

I'm now thinking to try to take the machine to its original firmware and see if it still does it, does anyone have any sugestion?
I use a lot photoshop and other image software, this computer is essential for my work. For more then one year this issue caused me problems.
Luckly i have a Macbook Pro too and i managed to do some of my work there. At last I was thinking to buy an external screen and attach it to the Macbook pro in order to work on my big images. But who wants to spend money again!!!???? This is not a fixture, this is silly. I wish to have my IMAc working again.
The warranty it's obviously over and this problem happened right after the warranty was over...
I write this post because i'm so tired of this issue and online nothing can be found apart from posts from so many people that have the same problem and no fixture has been found.
The only fixture seams to be to buy a new computer... Ole'!!!..new money flowing in in the cashier!! forget it!!! i would rather change company if apple doesn't respond to this.
For over 10 years i have been a Apple owner..
When this problem appears it's like someone it's playing a joke at you...
    Comments welcome..
    Thanks

Hi, I've seem to have found out the source of the problem.
The issue is related to heat, and an iMac 27" gets hot pretty fast.
If I boot the iMac straight after first start into Windows 7 I seem to get a lit built-in display at all times. I can also boot OS X first and then into Windows 7 and the built-in screen get lit every time as long as the iMac isn't hot.
Strange thing is that the monitor connected to the display port gets lit every time. So I can only assume that the heat only interfere with output to the built-in LED screen.
So this iMac is going to an Apple premium reseller for service, and I'll tell you guys how it went.
