Black Screen After Boot up

My T420s (2 months old) recently has been giving me a black screen after boot up (no "Thinkpad" image is displayed during boot up).  System totally unresponsive -- I have to push on/off button multiple times.  Subsequent boot up usually OK.  Sometimes once I'm up and running, upon entering sleep mode, the machine will not wake up.
I have adjusted power management setting and and up-to-date on all drives.  HELP!!!

if this is constantly occurring this would mean something is wrong with the Thinkpad's hardware, since this laptop is fairly new, you should consider getting it fixed under warranty.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after boot

    Hello,
I've been running Arch for a while now successfully, and decided to give Windows 10 a go, so I installed it on the side. Naturally, Windows overwrote the Grub2 bootloader, but I knew that was going to happen.
So after playing with Windows 10 for a while, I decided to go back to Arch. I put in the Arch Live CD, chrooted into my Arch installation, and ran the grub-install commands
    # grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck=/dev/sdc
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Grub reported no errors, other than something "invading" block 32. But nevertheless reported "success".
I reboot, and sure enough Grub is there, but when I try to load Arch, the first time I got a message that it was re-checking the /dev/sdc3 (which is where Arch is installed, /dev/sdc2 is where Windows is) because it's mount time is "in the future". That check ran for about 10 seconds, then proceeded with "normal" boot. The problem is... I see the message "/dev/sdc3 is clean" after which the SDDM (former KDM, the display manager) should load.
But all I see is black screen (not screen turned off, just black). I tried going to tty's (Alt+F1 to F5), but couldn't. I erased the Xorg.0.log (through another chroot) and rebooted with the same problem, then accessed the log later only to find them empty. I tried disabling SDDM and enabling GDM which I had installed, same problem.
What could it be? I don't even know where to look, as I don't really see any error messages anywhere.
    Thanks!

Once again duck programming, err, problem solving to the rescue.
I chrooted again and removed the nvidia drivers and disabled sddm. Installed xf86-video-noevau drivers and rebooted. This time I was greeted with tty1. Success!
Did some more fiddling, but I think it was the SDDM that was the culprit. I uninstalled it, and installed LightDM (with kde-greeter). Enabled the lightdm using systemctl, also removed the noevau with nvidia (back to proprietary), rebooted, and voila, it works! I am greeted with the login screen.

  • Replacement LCD install problems, black screen after boot.

    Hello,
Just replaced my broken LCD screen (model LTN170CT10) about a third of the screen was just vertical white lines and you could see a dark patch where the LCD was broken.. After quite a lot of searching I found a suitable replacement the same as listed on this link - http://www.powerbookmedic.com/17-Inch-MacBook-Unibody-Display-LCD-Screen-NEW-p-1 7383.html
My original screen was the matte anti glare so I decided to change to glossy as trying to find the aluminium bezel was proving impossible, anyway I followed the guide off this website and proceeded to replace the LCD, now after I boot all I get is a black screen, can't see any image at all, totally black. I opened the mac back up and checked all the cables and everything seems to be connected right but I still get the black screen. I thought I must have bought a DOA but I've tried the original LCD and that is just black as well.
Connected and external monitor and the mac is booted no problems, checked everything else worked, bluetooth, isight , airport etc, everything works fine apart from the display.
    Systems profiler shows this -
    http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n265/remrok/Screenshot2011-02-24at003756.png
I've zapped PRAM and reset the PMU and still nothing
Any ideas of what to check next or any other info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Liam.
    Update -
After screen sharing the Macbook Pro on my G5 I tested the brightness buttons on the the Macbook's keyboard and sure enough I can see the settings go up and down. The contrast buttons don't do anything though the icon comes up on the screen and looks as if the contrast is turned all the way down and there is also a circle with a line through it, pic here - http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n265/remrok/Picture1-4.png,

  • HP Envy 15 Laptop Notebook Windows 10 Black Screen After Boot

Hello, My issue invloves my laptop notebook which is the HP Envy 15, Product Number: A9P60UAR#ABA. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from my Windows 7 and experienced issues involving very long boot times to load to the log in screen and then all I see before I get to the login screen is a completely black screen with no curser for over a minute on average. I used to be able to load to the log in screen in an average time of 10 to 30 seconds with Windows 7.  After I log into my pc and reach my desktop I tried to put my pc in sleep mode and then try to wake up from sleep mode and then the black screen that happened when I booted my computer happened for about a minute to two minutes before I was able to see the log in screen, usually with my computer completely skipping the password requirement.  This issue is quite agrivating and I have reverted back to Windows 7 sinse this began to happen. I am willing to upgrade back to Windows 10 because I am able to revert back to windows 7 easily. Im not sure if I can fix this issue at this point in time with the lack of updates for drivers with my laptop some how or if others are experiencing the same problem.  If there is more information required to help I will be glad to help with the information. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

    Well..
I found my own solution, for anybody interested:
Now, I am not entirely sure if the video driver crashing is related, because it is working fine now.
But, what I did was hit F8 at boot, went to Windows recovery tools area, and ran system restore to a restore point created by Revo Uninstaller before it uninstalled the AOL Registry files, and it booted up fine.
My thinking, and probably everyone else reading this, is that when it uninstalled the AOL registry files, it must have caused some sort of problem? I scanned the Revo Uninstaller (and the crack I downloaded from PirateBay) with AVG before I even used it, and there was no virus, trojans, malware etc, etc. It was clean. So I don't think it was a virus or anything of that sort. My only thinking is that it must have uninstalled something it shouldn't have, causing Windows to stop functioning.
Don't think it was a RAM problem, because I first booted with my old 1GB module (after the restore) and it booted fine, powered down, and put my 2GB in, and it is working fine. Although I am running off of AC power right now - my battery isn't attached. That is the last variable left untested. I will most certainly post again if something goes wrong when I put my battery in.
I hope you guys want to discuss this, and maybe this will help someone else who has this problem, although mine seems pretty unique.

    Hello,
and welcome to the Arch board. I came from ubuntu, too and I can guarantee you, you have some frustrating moments ahead of you. But you'll also be rewarded once you get a better understanding of a linux system and once it's all set up the way you want it to have. So stick with Arch!
As to your problem: I presume you can see a menu once you boot the arch-iso, right? Before you choose anything you can add options at this point. The blank screen might be caused by automatic modeset. So hover over the menu entry you want to choose (like i686, x86_64, uefi) and look for a key to press to ad boot-options and add:
    nomodeset
to the kernel-line and see if you are able to continue with your installation. (I had this kind of issue with an old P-III laptop).

  • I have a black screen after boot up but the mouse is behaving normally. What's wrong?

Hi, today I turned on my Pavilion DV9500t after shutting it down for an hour. It booted up Windows 7 64-bit normally (the welcome screen was lasting longer than usual) but instead of going to my desktop the screen went to black with the cursor behaving normally and not blinking. No keyboard functions work though.
I've booted from the install disc and from there I repaired start up(no problems found) and restored to previous points several times without success.
There are no error messages and I haven't noticed any odd behavior leading up to this. Any suggestions as to the cause and its cure are greatly appreciated.

I would suggest restarting your unit and pressing F10 to get into BIOS. While in BIOS, i would run the hard disk self test in the diagnostics tab and see what the results are.

  • Black screen after boot but before login screen

    Hi,
I have a windows server 2012 machine running ADDS, recently I installed new hardware in to the machine but when I turned the server on windows would not fully load, in Safe Mode nor normally. So I removed the hardware I had installed but it
was still like it. The only mode I can boot and interact with the login screen is in Active Directory Restore Mode
    Current config

    4GB RAM
    Windows server 2012 r2

I don't see 2012 R2 listed but you'll surely want the proliant support pack installed.

  • Black Screen After Windows 8 64-bit Upgrade (Clean Install) on TouchSmart IQ508A (IQ500 series)

    Hi there,
Just installed Windows 8 and am getting a black screen after booting up like many others. I currently have disabled the graphics driver and this has solved the black screen issue but I can no longer use my web cam for Skype (although web cam works for W8 Camera App oddly).
To date I have tried the following:
Loading up the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website
Attempting to use the drivers for Windows 7 both in compatability mode and normally. I unzipped SP44488 to get this working
I know many others are having this problem so I really would  like someone from HP to respond and state whether a Windows 8 display driver for the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS is being developed.
I ran the compatability wizard prior to the clean install and it came up with no issues so I am very disappointed I am having these problems.
I've found out that HP have a customised version of the above card so that explains why the Nvidia drivers dont work so I believe HP is therefore obligated to provide a driver.
If anyone else is having similar issues please respond as this will hopefully lead to more action.
    cheers
    Steve

I'm in the same boat. On my IQ804, the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS card crashes when I use NVidia's latest Windows 8 driver and Microsoft's LIVE UPDATE drivers.  I have to resort to the Standard VGA driver in order for the pc not to crash into a black screen.
I read on another forum you can try installing a July 2012 version of the driver from NVidia and that should solve the problem.  I tried it once. Using the July 2012 version, the screen would stay on longer, but eventually it crashes into a black screen...but definitely more usable than the latest from NVidia and Microsoft.
I too have heard that HP used a customized version of the graphics card and that's why neither HP nor NVidia's drivers work.
I also tried installing the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS drivers for Windows 7 that I downloaded from the HP website.  It didn't work either.  It actually failed to install altogether, saying my system is incompatible.
As is, the pc works fine.  But videos and games that require motion is noticably choppy.
    Any help from HP??

  • Aspire R7 572G having a black screen after windows 8.1 update. What should I do

Hi all, Im wondering, anybody encounter this problem before, Im having trouble with this black screen after boot, it happened yesterday I think microsoft must have updated some of the drivers rendering my screen black after booting. Initially i thought it was my SSD but it turns out i can enter into Safe Mode.  I read more about this problem related to other PCs, and try the recommended method of "disabling" the Intel GMA HD drivers. It worked, however, it only means the primary driver is now reduced to a standard video graphic card with limited vram.  I have tried rolling back and even redownloading then reinstalling the intel driver into the version VGA_Intel_9.18.10.3215. The blackscreen after boot still occured. Did i miss something?

that's an old version of Intel drivers. try this, after uninstalling the old Intel driver:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/VGA/VGA_Intel_10.18.10.3316_W81x64_A.zip?acerid=635194016643160700&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20R7-572G&OS=81P1&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Black Screen after computer boots to Win XP With NX6600 VTD 256

My son recently purchased a new computer and gave his old one to me to salvage what I wanted.Since he just a few months ago purchased my NX6600 VTD 256 from me I naturally salvaged that first. I tried to install the NX6600 in my other son's computer without success. First the particulars:
MSI 845 Pro2 Mobo, 512 mb 133 Mhz Ram, 1.7 Ghz Intel CPU, Aopen AO350 12A PNF power supply, 350 watts with 18 amps on the 12 volt rail.
I did a fresh install of winXP on a freshly formatted HDD. Installed service pack 2, the latest intel drivers, and 5 different versions of the driver packages including ver 77.77 all with the same results.
After the computer boots I am intermittantly faced with a black screen after the WinXP logo disappears. This sometimes happens 3 times in a row before I get a working screen. After a good boot the NX6600 benchmarks good with very good marks!
I am at this point strongly suspecting the power supply is not up to the task, even though the specs for the NX6600 recommend a 350 watt power supply.  Before I start removing all the hardware from the computer except for the NX 6600 to see if I have a hardware conflict, I doubt this because with the NX6600 installed without drivers I get a good boot every time.
    I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks for the reply boss killer.
I tried what you suggested with a CRS power supply 300 watts with 15 amps on the 12 volt rail.
    with the exact same results.
I then put the crs powersupply back into #1 son's old case reinstalled the nx6600 and gave it a go
Particulars for the old computer ECS K7VTA3 ver. 1 Mobo with 512 Mb DDR, nx6600VTD256 vid card and the CRS Power supply 300 watts with 15 amps on the 12 volt rail , and win XP pro service pack 2.
Funny the card works great without any problems with this setup! And the powersupply is 50 watts less and only 15 amps as compared to the other with 18!
I then pulled all the hardware out of #2's computer and tried it with only the memory, cpu, and NX6600 connected.
I had to boot 5 times before I had a working screen.
Now I'm thinking that there is somthing amiss with the NX6600 and the MSI 845 Pro2 ???
I'm thinking that I would be better off installing the K7VTA3 in #2 son's computer with the NX6600, since this works fine. When I did a benchmark with this setup it outperformed the *45 Pro 2 NX6600 combination By 300 points 2600 as compared to 2300 aqua mark points.
    Isn't this fun?

Screen goes black immediately after booting up....except when just using the battery. If I plug in the cord, the screen goes immediately black, yet it is clear the computer is still working. There have been no hardware changes. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro tower, but since installing Mountain Lion I now get a random black screen at boot. Unplugging the apple cinema 20' power supply for 15 minutes seems to clear the fault. Have had no such problems with other OS until Mountain Lion, seems OK when booting to Snow Lepoard on my other drive?
    Anyone have the same fault?

Thanks for trying the help! I tried every version of start up, but with no screen it was no good..
Finally solved the problem, it was the ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card that was dying a very slow death.
Replaced it this morning with a GT120 Nvidia.
Anyone with this card should Google it, as apple did a big recall on these..

So, yesterday while playing a game of league of legends my Mac stopped running. After I resetted it, I got black screen after it the chime + loading bal.
    So far I've tried:
    CMD+R => black screen
    Holding shift => black screen
Holding Alt => chosing the HR, the repair disk, or the original CD to reintsall => black screen
Holding S => got to the terminal, did the check up, it said it was ok, restarted => black screen
Took off the power cable, waiting at least 15 seconds, and everything back on => black screen
    Holding Alt Cmd + p + R => black screen after restart
Removed 1 of the memories, then testen, same with the other one => black screen
I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point. Anything I've overlooked?
