  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

  • HELP! Black screen after startup after Yosemite installation

    Urgent help please.
I Have a late 2010 MacBook Pro and today installed Yosemite. It appeared to install ok, but now on startup it gets past the apple logo screen then just goes to a black screen with a cursor. I have attempted a safe boot, and it manages to get to the login screen, but it won't accept my password, it just keeps on loading the login screen over and over. Would love an answer please...I am completely puzzled!

Ok, I am a couple of days ahead of you. I had exactly the same issus on a mid 2010 mid MBP. Mine failed after the install, although it worked fine for a few minutes untill it went into Sleep. When it came back on it was in color But you could not really see, Another reset and all went black.
After an hour on the phone with support on Sunday who suggested trying a system management reset. Solved nothing. I went to my Genius apt on Monday.  Two hours and 15 minutes waiting in line And finally I got my Genus.
Again a nice guy trying to help, but other than pulling the connector to the screen and getting back my comprised color negative screen no real progress. "I know it sounds like a strange coincidence but maybe you display went bad."  Well perhaps you can get hit by lighting twice in a row while humming "Oh, What a beautiful morning" but I did not think so.
I was more lucky back at home. I recently installed an SSD, so I took it out and booted with the old drive and booted 10.9.5. Display was fine. So this proved the issuse was Yosemite install. Here is the good news, when I put the SSD back in everything was great. i know you can't do exactly what I did. Here is what I suggest..
I believe the issuse is bad video driver with Yosemite during the install.   rreinstall Maverick or boot from another drive with OPTION. . I believe it will work fine. Then if you are lucky perhaps your Yosemite will work as mine did...

  • Black screen after startup until home pressed - is this normal?

    Hi there,
I've just got a new ipad and have a question please. After I turn it on it very briefly shows the swipe to unlock screen (about 2 seconds) then goes to a black screen. If I press the home button it comes back again for about 5 seconds before going black again unless I swipe and then it works fine. Is this normal behaviour please? I can't find anything to describe this as normal or in the settings to change it.
    Thanks for your help!
    Mike

Yes, it is normal.  The screen goes right back to power saving sleep mode if you do not swipe to unlock it.  The assumption being, if you do not swipe to unlock, you are not using it so why waste power lighting up the screen.
If you go to settings->general->auto-lock and set it to "never" then once you swipe to unlock the screen will remain lit and active until you manually press the hardware sleep button (or use a magnetic closure, like the Apple smart cover or smart case), but that also may waste a lot of power.

  • Black screen after startup

I have a 13 inch MBP mid 2009 with 10.6.8. This has happened twice. I have turned on my laptop from sleep mode when it was low on battery and shortly after it dies. I attach the charger and wait a little bit before turing on the laptop. When I turn it on, i hear the hardrive start up and the chime but the screen does not turn on. The keyboard lights up and the computer works because I can put in a dvd and it will start playing (I can hear the sound) but no picture. The only way I can get it to start working is to disconnect the battery from the computer. Once I do that, everything works fine again. Just need to reset the date and clock.  I guess the logic board is slowly dying. Or is it the GPU as I have seen with other comments. Other issues I have are that one of the USB ports died and sometimes when I stream videos the picture turns white in areas.
    Any suggestions?

I've had a similar problem that has still not been resolved.. I have a 24' iMac 9'1 with ati radeon HD 4850.
What would happen to me is that if I am using windows for a prolonged period of time and playing with Apps that consume lots of power or playing games, the system would not restarf. What I mean by that is if I select to go to mac osx right after I finish what I was doing, it would restart, I would hear the start up sound and then it would just hang on black. The monitor would never power up. So I had to turn it off wait few minutes and turn it back on. Apple replaced the video card but nothing changed. This all happened to me with windows xp so now I upgraded to 7 and am still testing things out..

  • Satellite M70 - Black screen after recovery installation

So far what I have done is put in the Product Recovery DVD-ROM. Then when restarting my computer I was prompted to restore my computer to the factory defaults and said. After it went through that process it told me to remove the disc so I did. Now all it does is reach a black screen after the Toshiba screen that gives me the options to f2 for setup and f12 for options.
I do not know what to do now to make my laptop work again. Please help.

Satellite M70 is old notebook model and I would like to know do you use recovery disc for the first time. I had Satellite M70-159 long time ago and have installed recovery image many times.
Which installations mode you have used: standard mode or expert mode?
    Try to install it again.
As Xardas wrote try to obtain Microsoft installation disc and check if everything works well.

  • Qosmio X870-149 - Black screen after Update to win 8.1

After an update to win 8.1 I got a black screen after login , the only thing I could do was to press zero during startup and make a recovery installation .
It took 40 houres , I do not know why it took so long , but when it was over, the HDD was completely empty , so I installed win 7 instead , since I had not made ??a recovery CD . The problem now is that I still get black screen in between , and thinking that it might be a heat problem , I still have warranty , but I do not know if it applies when I installed win 7 on the machine.
I still have a warranty on my toshiba Qosmio

    Hi
Well, the warranty covers the hardware related problems. It does not cover any issues related to the software.
Now the open question is: why the black screen appears?
Is it hardware or software issue?
What happens if you access the BIOS?
Can you see anything on the screen?
Is something visible on the external monitor?

    Hi there ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! I have looked into the issue you are having with your display Turning Black after entering Safe Mode.  I found a document for you called Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. It would be very helpful for me to know what has been done already so that I can narrow down what troubleshooting would be best for you. You mentioned in your post "again". Is it an intermittent issue? Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post with the results of the steps in the document, and any other troubleshooting steps you had tried and the results. Have a great day!

So, yesterday while playing a game of league of legends my Mac stopped running. After I resetted it, I got black screen after it the chime + loading bal.
    So far I've tried:
    CMD+R => black screen
    Holding shift => black screen
Holding Alt => chosing the HR, the repair disk, or the original CD to reintsall => black screen
Holding S => got to the terminal, did the check up, it said it was ok, restarted => black screen
Took off the power cable, waiting at least 15 seconds, and everything back on => black screen
    Holding Alt Cmd + p + R => black screen after restart
Removed 1 of the memories, then testen, same with the other one => black screen
I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point. Anything I've overlooked?

  • Black screen problem on Satellite 1800-921

    Hi there
My satellite 1800-921 has started giving me a black screen after i turn it on. It loads up fine, goes to the desktop and then the screen goes blank and nothing i can do will get it back. You can just make out the dialogue boxes on the screen so I am not sure if its a screen problem or the things i see on the screen are just ghosts...
    It's a bit worrying!
Has anyone else had this problem? So far it only seems to happen when i turn it on. I usually have to turn it off and start again to get it back and then it works fine.
    thanks
    Nancy :)

    Hi,
at older series it can be that the FL inverter is broken or the backlight tupe is damaged. In both cases you can see the screen but without backlight!
To differi if it is a hard- or software based error you should start the notebook and press immediately ESC to enter BIOS. Then the machine should run a half hour in BIOS. When the failure occures it is quite safe that some hardware is broken. Otherwise it is software based and a recovery with the Toshiba Recovery CD should solve the problem!

  • Black Screen after W7 logo before login screen - HELP!

    Hi,
When I start windows, after Windows 7 start logo, I get a black screen for about 20-40
seconds, then a black screen with cursor for around 1 and a half minute and then I get the login screen, thats around after 3minutes.
I am facing this problem for quite some time now, I also did a clean windows installation
after wiping out harddisk using diskpart. But it was of no use, still I get that annoying Black Screen at startup and I think my laptop is a bit slow too. When
I open windows in safe mode, I get the Black screen there too but for like 35-45 seconds.
I also ran Dell PC Checkup, everything is fine.
I'd be really grateful if someone helps me find out what exactly is wrong with my laptop
and how can I get rid of this black screen, thanks!

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after GRUB

    Hello everyone
I was setting up a machine with E17 and was trying various DM's since none seemed to work. After attempting to use LightDM, I get a black screen after GRUB. I was trying to read the various logs at /var/log/ but I cannot understand them properly. I tried reinstalling entrance and LightDM with no luck. I even tried editing grub's entry appending '1' or 's' and still no dice. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi tnx for both answers.
I missed something important in Xorg.log. As you can see, fbdev and modesetting aren't loading as usual. I didn't check grub stuff, I don't think it's related, since loading in level 3 (text mode) I get a black screen but I can login as root and turn off the computer blindlessly.

No, I can't get it to work changing DM's. I'm not sure if I pacman -Syu before changing DM's another time. Maybe it wasn't LightDM's fault afterall.

  • [Solved]Black screen after "waiting for udev uevents to be processed"

    Hello friends,
Starting from late Dec., my laptop goes black screen after "waiting for udev uevents to be processed", after updating kernel to 2.26.32.*.  The strange thing is that even the screen is black, the keyboard is working. For example, I can turn on/off the status lights of capslock and others. I guess something might be wrong with udev uevents configuration with regard to the latest kernel. I've noticed that in the new kernel, there are two drivers for intel integrated graphics. My laptop has a 855G, which is supposed to be functional by both drivers, at least according to the kernel description. Maybe because the udev is configured to use the second driver (for newer graphic chips), rather than the first driver, which caused the problem?
    Regards,
    Wen
