Black screen but still powers external hard drive

I have two Cinema Displays, not thunderbolt, hooked to a new iMac 27". I took the first one to an Apple Authorised Repair Center and was told that either the logic board or power adapter were shot. The monitor is too old for them to get parts from Apple, so I went and bought a used one from ebay a year ago. Now this monitor just went black while I was working on it. It still powers an external hard drive that appears on my imac, and the light on the front still pulseates.
Both these monitors are the chrome edged 23" HD displays. One is an 07' and the other 11' neither are thunderbolt and neither have a camera. Any ideas. My Apple authorised tech shop said i can have the later one replaced by apple for $670. I don't want to spend that much when I only paid $350 off ebay. If it was just the power adapter I would buy just that, but who knows?

…and I suspect you want some clairvoyant or mind reader to guess all the details and specs of your setup?

  • Bus powered external hard drives and the Powerbook G4 17 inch

Does anyone have a suggestion for a bus powered external hard drive that will work with the Powerbook 17 inch? I had purchased a Simpletech Simpledrive portable USB 100GB bus powered drive and it will not work with my 17 inch. It works with my 15 inch titanium and a G5 but not the 17 inch. Simpletech told me that it isn't getting enough power from the USB ports (I even tried using the adapter to plug it into both ports at the same time).
I am going to return the drive and probably buy a Firewire one instead since you can boot from Firewire but I am wondering if I will have the same problem with Firewire on the 17 inch and HAVE to use an AC adapter.
    PowerBook G4 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

This also happens on the PB 15". It is perceived as a problem. If you check via the System Profiler you will likely see that the USB port output is 500mA. Most drives - in a USB or FW case - need 1A to boot. There are some drives that will boot with 500mA. If a 500mA drive is installed in the USB case it should boot off the bus power. If using a ext HD you can only boot the computer from the FW port and not the USB or PCMCIA slot.
The FW port will power the ext HD. I do not recommend daisy chaining unless you use a powered FW hub. I blew 4 FW ports and had to replace the logic board 4 times but Apple Care paid for all the work. The newer FW ports are more robust but it is still a chance if you try to draw too much power.

  • I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open

I downloaded some videos to Premier Elements 13 from an external hard drive but now the external hard drive is damaged. While setting up my new MAC the external hard drive was dropped and I have been told by an outside source they could not retrieve the files.  It had 4 years of photos and videos on it. I remembered that I had downloaded some of the videos from the external hard drive (before it was broke) to Adobe Organizer 13 when I installed the Adobe 13 on my MACOS X 10.9.5.  I tried to open the videos on the organizer which it shows the video but with a yellow ? and says missing file. Is there anyway I can open these videos?
Any input is greatly appreciated!! I am sick over losing the videos and had a little hope on Adobe Organizer until I was unable to open them.  I am thinking it is due to my external hard drive not being plugged in. I thought when I transferred from the external hard drive to Adobe 13 that it would be there without the external hard drive needing to be attached but maybe I did something wrong.
    Thanks again for any help!!!!

To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

  • Bus Powered External Hard Drive?

Can anyone recommend a good bus-powered External Hard Drive that I can use with my iMac? I really like Western Digital's MyBooks, but they require mains power and come with a big power brick, which is pretty messy. I want a hard drive that gets it's power through either USB 2.0 or Firewire. And I'd like something that has at least 250GB of storage. Any suggestions?

I bought a bus powered OWC laptop drive (100GB 720RPM) for around 170 dollars. But, that was for my laptop, as it's much easier to have a bus powered laptop drive then needing to plug it in to use it. This way I can sit somewhere, not near a power outlet, and be able to use the drive.
As mentioned in an earlier post, 3.5 Hard Drives require to much power in order to be bus powered.
You could buy a 200GB hard drive, bus powered, 4200RPM, and is a laptop drive for your iMac, but that's not the best way to go. First, the drive is going to be very expensive. You could get a 320GB 3.5 In HD for way cheaper. Second, it's going to be noticibly slower.
When I get externals, I buy the drive, and pitch in 50 bucks or so for an external enclosure. It's the CompUSA brand and they work quite well. They are not bus powered, but the Power Brick is limited in size and is relitively small. It's cheaper this way. This can be a challenge to someone who isn't really 'computer-talented.'
I'd go FireWire....It's much faster and won't slow you down while you're trying to access your files and do your work.
OWC if you really want that bus powered laptop drive.
NewEgg if you want to shop for drives, and get them cheaper. Not to mention their fast shipping.
    Give it some thought.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

I'm betting that it was originally Partitioned with Snow Leopard.
As a test I just added a second Partition with Mountain Lion to a FireWire HD and it would not let me Install Snow Leopard from my System or Retail Disc into the Partition.

  • Screen Lock When searching external hard drive?

Why would my screen be locking up when I try to access my external hard drive? It shows the folders contained in it, but won't let me scroll down to see the rest or open the folders when clicked on. when I try to use the menu at the top I just get the spinning wheel. I have to force quit to get back to my main hard drive, which works fine.  I'm able to access the folders through lightroom so I feel like the hard drive is not at fault.. Any help or ideas would be greately appreciated

  • What's the largest capacity bus-powered external hard drive?

I realize that this isn't a Mac specific question, but I'd really like a recommendation. What's the largest capacity bus-powered (preferably USB) external hard drive available. My new MBP has a 500GB drive so I would need something with probably 640GB or bigger. Problem is I can't find anything over 500GB that's bus-powered. Everything I've found requires an external power supply which is what I'm trying to avoid. If anyone has a recommendation, please share it.

Have a search on the web for USA retailers who supply empty enclosures and drives separately. The enclosure is the physical case and the bits of circuitry and the physical ports. Tell them what you want and ask him what drives and enclosures he has to suit your purpose and if he can fit the two together for you. I have such a supplier but am in UK.
Does it have to be a USB bus? Firewire is better and gives more power. One way I power a 360GB pocket drive is to feed from TWO USB ports on the computer into one input port on the drive(now in the enclosure) you should be able to buy a sort of "Y" shaped cable with two full size flat USB connectors at one end and one single connector at the drive end. The drive end often will be a mini usb port. What you want will depend upon the size of the input into the drive.

  • Difference between portable external hardive & powered external hard drive

I have read many post discussing buying external hard drives, either portable or with a power cord. what is the pro and cons of choosing a portable external drives versus non portable ext. drive. My wife has almost filled up my imac with movies and tv shows. I recommended a 1TB external drive with a power plug that sit next to my computer. We just purchased a macbook pro 2009 for her and now I'm learning it a slightly different world with her having the ability to move around the house or take her computer to work. So maybe my suggestion is not the best. Can anyone share some suggestions for us?

Is there any problem/cons with the bus powered ext drive using the laptop for power and also backing up data? does the laptop need to stay awake so the bus powered ext drive can backup, since it drawing it power from the laptop?
No problems, no. The limitation is that bus-powered drives are usually smaller/slower for the price than AC-powered drives. You can't get a 3.5" 2 TB, 10000 rpm diameter bus-powered drive, for example.
Yes, the MBP needs to be awake to power the drive. But that's not a 'problem' since the MBP itself needs to be awake for a backup to run, too.

  • Failing-but-possibly-repaired external hard drive: what to do?

I had a problem restoring a file from my external hard drive; disk repair said there were serious problems with the disk; DiskWarrior repaired it, but said there may be some missing files. (There's now a "backup" icon and a "rescued files" icon on the hard drive.)
What's the best next step? Assume the "repair" took? (Doubt this is prudent.) Clone the external hard drive onto another and resume Time Machine from that point? (Possible?) Simply start over with TM on the new drive and ditch the old?

Are these your only backups? If so, I'd advise putting that drive "on the shelf" until you can get a new one and get a full backup on it, preferably a "bootable clone."
The two most popular apps for that are [CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com>, which is donationware, and [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html]. It has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling.
Then, if you want to try to salvage your Time Machine backups, delete the "rescued files" folder. The only other thing on the drive should be your Backups.backupdb folder. Start your Mac up from the Install disc, then Restart normally. That should trigger a "deep traversal" on the next Time Machine backup, where Time Machine will compare everything on your system to the backups, and back up anything that's missing. You should see "Scanning nnnn items" on the Time Machine Preferences window. That will take somewhat longer than a normal backup, but should get you caught up with the current contents of your system (some copies of things you'd deleted or changed may be gone).
Or, as kingfumonkey says, do a zero-out erase and start fresh.
Either way, continue both normal Time Machine and regular "clone" backups. You might want to consider getting a portable external for the clone, so you can take it to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, or other secure off-site location, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc.

  • Hello. I have MacBook Pro. I have 30,000 photos on iPhoto which is not on the hard drive but on an external hard drive. I have purchased a 2nd external hard drive and I would like to make a copy of my iphoto library onto it. I cant get this to work.

I have MacBook Pro. I have my iPhoto library on external hard drive only. It has 30,000 photos on it. I have bought a 2nd external hard drive and would like to copy my iPhoto library onto it as a back up. I tried plugging both in and dragging the iPhoto library into the 2nd external harddrive. It looked as though it was working as it said 20 hours, however I then got a message box saying FiNader could not complete the task due to incompatible files. How do I do this please.

Yes, you should format the HD.
A Mac can natively write to a NTSF drive and that is what most drives com formatted with.
You should use the Mac journaled format.
Once again you are posting incorrect information
Until we know what format the drive is it is impossible to state that it must be formatted - that is just a guess
And a Mac can not Natively write to an NTSF drive - it can natively read it but can not write to it with special software
And since formatting a drive erases it it is critical to tell users not to format until they have a positively known good backup

  • MBP won't boot, black screen, no white LED, clicking hard drive noise

Hey everybody, so the title basically summarizes it all. I connected an IDE HDD to my Macbook Pro through a USB enclosure, which had an AC IN jack, for plugging it into an electrical outlet (which I did) and the moment I connected it to my computer's usb port, the screen suddenly went black. I disconnected the HDD, and tried to turn on my MBP but it was no use. Ever since I have tried again and again to turn it on, but the computer will not boot. I have performed all of the suggested steps by Apple (PRAM reboot, holding down different keys while pressing the "on" button, etc.) but it's been worthless. My hard drive is okay, since i took it out and found out that all of my information and files were there. Still, whenever I try to turn the computer on, a clicking sound can be heard, as if the HD was trying to spin but failed. I have no display whatsoever, and no white LED in the front. I am truly desperate and would appreciate anyone's help big time.
    Thanks a lot,
    Luis

Thanks for the reply but it isn't a hard drive issue.  I have tested the hard drive in an external enclosure and it's working fine.  I even put in another hard drive i have and it wont boot that either.  I'm thinking its a logic board issue.  Any one know best place to get logic board replacement near london for cheap

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station not recognize my iProDrive powered external hard drive?

My 500GB iprodrive is recognized when connected directly to any of my computers just fine. My AEBS recognizes flash drives just fine. But the two together don't work. I have tried reformatting to exfat, msdos(fat), extended, extended journaled, none work. Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem. Help?

Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem.
I have to use a powered USB hub with a 1 TB LaCie hard drive when I connect it to the AirPort Extreme, otherwise the drive is not recognized.
However, I can connect the same hard drive directly to my MacBook Pro and it works just fine without the powered USB hub.
Try formatting the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+, and try using a powered USB hub when you connect the drive to the AEBS.
If that still won't work, then you have to assume that the drive is just not compatible with the USB port on the AEBS.

  • IPod nano (5th Generation) Black Screen but still plays Music

    Problem:
I see a black screen and no backlit normal screen - there's a faint Apple Logo when the device is turned on.
I can navigate the scroll wheel and hear the audible "clicks" when circling the scroll wheel.
I can push play and it will play music just fine. FF, Rewind, Menu, Play/pause all work correctly.
    Tried the following:
Menu + Select + held down for 5-10 seconds.  faint apple logo dissapppears then I push Play and it re-appears.  Still plays music just fine but screen still black with faint apple logo and no back light.
Restore Factory Settings via iTunes.  It erased all media.  put a song on there to test.  can play song but same issue (no back light OS, just  black + faint apple logo on the display)
Tried Rewind + select to enter diagnostics - nothing happens, same issue
    Please help.
