Black Screen imac 27" - Error report

Hello there
Our family imac went to 'black' a couple of weeks ago whilst my son was using it. Despite attempts to resurrect it with apple support over the 'phone, the black screen persisted and it was recommended to take it in for assessment and repair. It has been sitting switched off and unplugged for a couple of weeks. I was about to 'box it up' to take it to the shop, but thought I'd give it one last try. I managed to extract this error report before it crashed to black again. I wondered if anyone could decipher it for me? We've had macs for 20 years, and this is the first time I've been unable to retrieve it myself.

  • Installing Win 7 via Bootcamp on 27' iMac 2010 gives BLACK screen, BLINKING cursor error (BSBCE)?

    Hi All,
All coments appreciated regarding thiis issue.
    I have a 2010 27' i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 8Gb ram, 2Tb Seagate, and 256 Samsung SSD.
I am running 10.6.8 with all updates on the 2Tb Seagate (has BC 3.04), and 10.7.1 on the Samsung (has BC 4.0).
I have tried over a dozen times to install Win 7 (both a 32 bit Professional edition and a 64 bit Ultimate edition) on BC partitions on both drives. These have been all on separate occasions of course.
All installs result in what appears to be a successful install, but when the machine reboots to launch Win 7 for the first time, I ALWAYS get a black screen with a blinking cursor error (BSBCE).
This is not the 2009 video card driver issue problem reported so widely and referred to in the Apple article TS3173. I had that model previously and the way around that was to connect a second monitor/LCD for the installation.
No this is a new and separate issue.
And I am no nubie. I have used IT for over 25 years and teach networking courses in the Win and Mac environments.
The problem appears to be in a corrupt boot loader install.
I have used both WIn 7 install disks to do a repair each time. The repair says it is successful but after rebooting all I get is the black screen and flashing cursor, with no keyboard response. I have used both Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards. Nothing seems to make a difference re getting WIn 7 to boot after the install on either drive.
I have also used the Bootrec commands in the command window. They all return a successful outcome but when rebooting I see the ever familar BSBCE.
Now,,,,,here is the real puzzle. I copied my previous Win 7 Ultimate install using Winclone before I sold my older 27' iMac.
If I restore that install to the 2010 iMac Win 7 boots fine!
So some error is happening on my current machine when the bootloader/bootmanager is being written to the BC partition.
The problem is there with the BC on both 10.6 and 10.7, and these are different versions of BC!
Now to further complicate the problem, I manage 12X 2011 21.5' iMacs in a lab at work. Win 7 Professional 32bit installed on these machines just as it should (same disks that produces the black screen flashing cursor).
I have read that some people thing it is a Boot Rom version issue, and there may be some substance to this as WIN 7 installs so easily on the 2011 iMacs in my lab.
I called Applecare about this and went through the procedures outlined above. The guy was very helpful and sympathetic but he had no answer to the problem. His suggestion was to pull the SSD out and do it again with only one drive. As the machine can ship from Apple with both of these drives I really do doubt that pulling the SSD would make a difference.
Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7 work fine, no problems on both drives, so I don't think it is a drive issue.
    OK Mac gurus...over to you.

I have a bookmark for iMac w/ SSD and hard drive.
There is also the 'req'd reading' in http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
with one article on Black screen w/ iMac 2010.

would appreciate any help in resolving this issue.  It is random but seems to happen when using safari
computer just goes to black screen keyboard and mouse are dead.
have used disk utilities recently for repair disk and repair permissions.  Have not tried to reinstall snowleopard as the instructions don't make sense to me.

  • Black screen iMac ( 27inch - mid 2011)

    Hello,
A friend of mine has problems with his iMac (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2).
He regularly will see a black screen before or after login. Only a black screen, no black screen with a mouse pointer.
Sometimes he will see several black screens a day, and sometimes nothing happens several days.
    What we have tried:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Without success, unfortunately. Black screens are still there.
I hope you can help me and my friend.
    Thank you.

When I go to the iTunes store, it won't open.  I don't receive an error message of any kind, just a blank black screen.  I have tried to access the store on other devices in my home and it works.  All my music shows up in my library, but nothing will show up when I go to the actual store.  I have updated my software and made sure the date/time are correct.  Everything else seems to be working fine on my computer.  Not sure what is going on, but would really appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

I'm expreriencing the same conditions with the same environment.  Windows 8, iTunes-64 11.1.2.32, iTunes Store with a processing bar up to 80 +/- and the POPUP MESSAGE OF "iTunes stopped working. The error ...."
I UNINSTALLED, iTUNES WITH NO POSITIVE RESULT.  I CHECKED THE FIREWALL AND IS THE SAME DEFINITION AS THE PREVIOUS ITUNES VERSION.

  • Black Screen iMac Late 2009 Fixed

This is just an FYI as when I had experienced my black screen on my Late 2009 Imac and read so MANY complaints
of people having the same issue I thought I would post my symptoms here. Due to the fact that my 3 year Apple care warranty
had run out I was faced with either bringing it to Apple and have them fix it or fix it myself. Taking it to Apple was out of the question
because of the amount of $$ they feel the need to charge for parts and labor.
I did my research and read many post of so many people having this issue.
Mine started one day whlile I was on my mac..my mac beeped and went black..So I replaced the memory..no biggie.
Then months later my screen would go black for no apparent reason. I would shut down, reset SMC & PRAM..It would come back for a little while
and just randomly go black. I thought maybe heat issue. So I cleaned vents & dust from fans etc.
Finally my Imac got to the point where the second I boot up..the screen would come on and immediatly go black.
I did the recommended things people had suggested.
I shined a flashlight on my mac LCD Panel while it was booted..I could faintly see my desktop folders ETC..
So I thought backlight board may need to be replaced. I purchased a new board, replaced..Not The Problem
I noticed that when booted and screen was black if I pressed the power button a couple of times the screen would come back
long enough for me to turn the brightness all the way down and still see the screen. At least this way I could run Extended Hardware
Test to see if it found any hardware issues. It found none and I ran the test 5 times. I thought this may have been power related
so I then purchased a brand new PSU from iFixit and that was not the problem.
I replaced all the lcd sync cables, temp cables, still not fixed.
Final resort. I purchased a LCD panel ( awesome seller on Ebay) used and in mint condition ( not a blemish). BINGO..
A new LCD fixed the problem. ( I did get silver tape & mylar to replace the stuff I tore off)
I have been running my Imac now for a couple weeks..non stop but I do shut down at night. I have had no issues now at all.
It feels just as nice & smooth and fast as it did from day 1.
What do I have left? A great Machine and some parts I took out as I replaced new ones and the old ones are probably good so I will have those
should my PSU or backlight goes bad. I may pick up a few more parts to have on hand and put away before it gets too difficult to find them.
I hope this helps anyone out there left with a late 2009 Imac..black screen..I am so relieved...

    Hi-
Do you notice these smudge marks with the iMac off as well? If so, it is probably just some dirt or a fingerprint behind the glass on the front panel.
Yes, Apple or any authorized repair center can do this. 5 minutes tops. You could probably do it yourself (if out of warranty, which you are not) with a pair of suction cups to lift off the glass.
Again- you are under warranty, so I most certainly wouldn't do that.
Some users post being able to get a replacement iMac while their defective unit is in the shop, but those individuals have either had a history of having problems with their order, or were especially forceful in manner.
Don't count on being able to get one.

  • Bootcamp Black Screen iMac 27" (Late 2012) GTX 680 Drivers?

This is easy, same problem for everyone.
Using bootcamp to install windows 7 from an .iso in a USB (just because there is no DVD drive anymore on the iMac), after restart the imac a black screen come up and nothing happen.
I think this is because the drivers for the GTX 680 MX 2GB is missing on the USB.
Where to get them and how to fix this problem?
the solution that apple has right here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173 it doesn't work at all, just because the driver that you download from there is for an ATI Graphic card.
    How to fix this please.
I bought this very expensive imac because it is so powerfull and I want to use designing software with windows and use at the same time mac OS.
Please don't tell me about Parallels or VMware xD.
    Thanks a lot
    Regards

Hey,  I ran across this, sounds like unplugging it might make the difference? going to try tommorrow, best of luck  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4688499?start=0&tstart=0

  • Black screen imac, diagnosis test

    Hi,
I have an iMac 21'' of 2011. I turn it on but the screen stays black.
I have done the following recommendations after some search in different forums:
Command (⌘), Option, P, and R at when I turn on the computer. The chime sound has been heard 3 times
I checked weather the brightness was very low that I couldn't see the screen.
The computer turn's on, and fortunately I managed to login in remotely through team viewer, though the screen is still balck. I'm trying to check whether there is a problem with the graphic card or the display itself before I ask help from an apple store.
Unfortunately I don't have currently a thunderbolt monitor to plug into the iMac and check whether the graphic card is working or not.
I was trying to find a diagnostic tool, and I have found out that there is the Apple Hardware Test Over the Internet, and you just need to press Option+D at the beginning. As my monitor stay black and I don't have another monitor I can't do something like that. I wonder if there is any diiagnostic tool that I could run through MacOSX
    Thanks in advance

I have tried what you said but nothing happened. I did the following:
Boot to single user mode (hold ⌘ S while powering on the Mac)
Type and hit return: /sbin/fsck -fy (ok, no errors)
Type and hit return: /sbin/mount -uw / (ok)
Type and hit return: rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist (ok)
Type and hit return: rm /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist (it doesn't exist)
Type and hit return: rm /private/var/db/.AppleUpgrade (it doesn't exist)
Type and hit return: reboot (ok)
I have found the following link as well
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/168324/LCD+Backlight+not+working+%3D+solved
I haven't tried it yet but from a quick look it says that it might be the LCD panel or the SATA/Board Logic board. However when I put flashlight on the screen I don't see anything as it's being said in the article.
What I could do is trying to connect it with an external screen. Is it necessary to have an adapter thunderbolt to hdmi or vga or there is another way as well?

  • Shutdown, Black Screen, iMac still Running

I seem to have come across a problem lately. When I shut down my iMac on Leopard, I go through the regular steps, like the cursor disappearing, and sometimes the spinning wheel appearing, but I've come across a problem that I never had in Tiger and has only appeared recently. After the screen has gone blank, I can still hear the fans and HD whirring inside. Its a good 20 seconds before the computer itself switches off completely. The same also applies to when I restart, it hangs on this annoying blank screen, and takes about 30 seconds for the Mac startup jingle, especially frustrating when I want to launch into Boot Camp.
I've tried some other tips listed in threads, like unplugging all USB hardware and stuff, but I'm still experiencing problems.
Anybody else got this same problem?
    Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro screen freezes with error report

Today, my screen froze suddenly, and since the I have this problem reoccurring in certain intervals. I ran /sbin/fsck -fy and got the following results. I assume this is something with the processor? Would be nice if someone could help me out here.
    http://s24.postimg.org/yjt59iq6t/image.jpg
I have to say that I have a bad battery, but as long as it is plugged in, it shouldn't be a problem?
Also, i unfortunately dont have the hardware diagnosis dvd and cant get it to run by holding down d
    Thanks!

This log is showing an input/output error with the hard disk. It means that your hard disk is damaged.
If you have a backup of your files, I recommend you to install a new hard drive. It can be done at a reseller or Apple Store, but it's cheaper to do this yourself. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work, so you can have a look for hard disks at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

  • IMac wont boot--black screen.

I have 2 iMacs (1.8gHz). Im familiar with the display problem with lines and artifacts.
So I sent both boards to a guy on ebay who fixes (replaces) the leaking capacitors for $50. (I wasnt going to pay $1000 to Apple)
I put installed the MBboards back in both Imacs.
One booted fine then to a crazy lined screen and froze. Subsequent restarts it got worse till now it sounds like its starting but NO display, just black.
The other iMac makes the start chime, then just seems to go dead to a black screen.
I order 2 inverter boards on eBay (new). Installed both.
Now both iMacs sound like they are running but display is totally black...
    Whats going on? Stumped.

    Steve-
Has your black screen iMac situation been resolved? I too have a very similar problem currently:

  • HP Pavilion DV6; Black Screen & Atikmpag.sys BSOD with external Monitor

    Hello Guys.
I have HP Pavilion DV6 Core i7 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics Card. Two weeks ago, I started getting continous Atikmpag, sys BSODs. The operating system also started giving me warnings about the hardrive. After a few days, the BSODs got more frequent. Then one day, I was doing normal stuff on my PC and the Display Driver crashed. Instead of recovering, the PC froze. I forced restart my PC but it got worse. The display of my laptop went black. I connected the laptop to external monitor which detected the display. When I tried to load the windows, it started giving me the Atikmpag.sys BSOD on the start up. Now the operating system works fine in the Safe Mode but with nothing on the laptop's screen. The soultions I have tried so far are.
    -Reinstalled the windows thrice
-Removed the drivers and installed the updated ones a bunch of times.
-Rolled back the bios to an earlier version
-Removed the hardrive and tried to load it from an operating system installed on external flash drive
-Tried loading the PC with linux on external flash drive
-Opened the laptop and cleaned it thoroughly
-Removed all the components and plugged them one by one.
-Removed the old Atikmpag.sys in system32 folder and expanded it with the latest ones.
-Installed every thing fresh from HP website
None of these tricks have given me any luck yet. The only way, I could use the operating system in normal mode, is to delete the atikmpag.sys file in safe mode and then log on back in normal mode. I also analysed the minidump file through window debugger and it says that atikmpag.sys is causing this crash with the TDR message. I did all these with an external monitor as the display of the laptop is black since that day.
Below are the detailed specs of my laptop.
OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium
    Version: 6.1.7601
System Model: HP Pavilion Dv6 Notebook PC
    Processor: Intel Core i7 Q 721 @ 1.60 GHz
    Bios Version/Date: Hewlett- Packard F.29, 11/7/2011
    Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 6GB
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1 GB
I have tried almost every solution available on these forums but still have not gotten any where. I am wondering how could the display, graphics card and hard drive stop working at the same time .
I would really appreciate if someone colud help me through this problem.
    Thank you
P.S. Kindly ignore my English mistakes as it is not my first language.

  • Macbook Pro 17" Black screen when selecting Windows 7

I got a Macbook Pro 17", late 2010 that has been experiencing an issue when selecting Windows 7 as my Boot OS. This is an intermittent issue. It happens like once every 8 or 10 usage. I already took it 2 the Apple Geniuses twice and I was turn around because, They say, They don't do Windows.
At this point, I'm hoping that Apple will come out with a Firmware Update or anything that will fix this issue. I know There are other users in the same boat as me or worst waiting for Apple to come out with a remedy.

You might want to reformat and re-read what you had.

  • Black-screen when finalizing Windows 7 install and a few other things

hi! ill get right to it.. i recently decided to install Windows 7 on my iMac due to the fact that i want more
flexibility when it comes to gaming. i made a partition using Boot Camp, then rebooted with the Windows 7 cd.
after a reboot or two the installation seemed to be coming to an end.
however, when Windows was starting up to finalize the installation the screen just went infinite black.
so thats where im stuck right now. however i have seen alot of discussions on different forums (with positive feedback)
on how to fix this problem with ease. apparently, one way of doing this was to delete atikmdag.sys from the Windows 7 System32 folder,
and then start Windows without problems to complete the installation.
and heres the problem im facing on top of it all: i downloaded MacFUSE in order to be able to see/gain access to
my Windows partition. the problem is, when i try to delete atikmdag.sys or anything else i am not allowed.
the entire partition and all files within seems to be write-protected. my rights are read only - and it seems that
i cannot change this. how come?
i am logged in as admin and i have all rights available for my files and folders on my mac-partition..
if there is no way of altering the permissions for the Windows 7 partition via OS X in order to
delete this atikmdag.sys file, how can i solve my Windows install problem? is there
any other way of doing it?
please help, i want to get Windows 7 running
