Black Screen iMac Late 2009 Fixed

This is just an FYI as when I had experienced my black screen on my Late 2009 Imac and read so MANY complaints
of people having the same issue I thought I would post my symptoms here. Due to the fact that my 3 year Apple care warranty
had run out I was faced with either bringing it to Apple and have them fix it or fix it myself. Taking it to Apple was out of the question
because of the amount of $$ they feel the need to charge for parts and labor.
I did my research and read many post of so many people having this issue.
Mine started one day whlile I was on my mac..my mac beeped and went black..So I replaced the memory..no biggie.
Then months later my screen would go black for no apparent reason. I would shut down, reset SMC & PRAM..It would come back for a little while
and just randomly go black. I thought maybe heat issue. So I cleaned vents & dust from fans etc.
Finally my Imac got to the point where the second I boot up..the screen would come on and immediatly go black.
I did the recommended things people had suggested.
I shined a flashlight on my mac LCD Panel while it was booted..I could faintly see my desktop folders ETC..
So I thought backlight board may need to be replaced. I purchased a new board, replaced..Not The Problem
I noticed that when booted and screen was black if I pressed the power button a couple of times the screen would come back
long enough for me to turn the brightness all the way down and still see the screen. At least this way I could run Extended Hardware
Test to see if it found any hardware issues. It found none and I ran the test 5 times. I thought this may have been power related
so I then purchased a brand new PSU from iFixit and that was not the problem.
I replaced all the lcd sync cables, temp cables, still not fixed.
Final resort. I purchased a LCD panel ( awesome seller on Ebay) used and in mint condition ( not a blemish). BINGO..
A new LCD fixed the problem. ( I did get silver tape & mylar to replace the stuff I tore off)
I have been running my Imac now for a couple weeks..non stop but I do shut down at night. I have had no issues now at all.
It feels just as nice & smooth and fast as it did from day 1.
What do I have left? A great Machine and some parts I took out as I replaced new ones and the old ones are probably good so I will have those
should my PSU or backlight goes bad. I may pick up a few more parts to have on hand and put away before it gets too difficult to find them.
I hope this helps anyone out there left with a late 2009 Imac..black screen..I am so relieved...

Hi-
Do you notice these smudge marks with the iMac off as well? If so, it is probably just some dirt or a fingerprint behind the glass on the front panel.
Yes, Apple or any authorized repair center can do this. 5 minutes tops. You could probably do it yourself (if out of warranty, which you are not) with a pair of suction cups to lift off the glass.
Again- you are under warranty, so I most certainly wouldn't do that.
Some users post being able to get a replacement iMac while their defective unit is in the shop, but those individuals have either had a history of having problems with their order, or were especially forceful in manner.
Don't count on being able to get one.

  • Smuges behind screen imac late 2009 27" core i7

Hi I am noticing some smudge marks on my 2 month old Late 2009 imac 27 core i7. There are distinct smudge marks on the right side of the screen and the left. Will apple fix this? And if so, do they have a policy where I can have a new imac sent to me and send the old one back? I think this can be done if you give them your credit card info with iPhones right?
    Thanks

  • 27in iMac (late 2009) ATI 4850 drivers problem in Windows 7

This iMac is less than a month old. Windows 7 was working fine until a couple of days ago. While at the Windows 7 desktop the screen pixlated and froze. A tip bubble appeared in the notification bar that said the ATI driver quit but was recovered. The screen went black then restored itself. A moment later the whole thing occurred again. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Thanks for any help.

    BANDING AND DRIVER CRASHING SOLVED:
I bought the following iMac on April 18, 2010 to run Windows 7 and Autodesk REVIT 2011.
    27" iMac (Late 2009)
    Intel Core i7, quad-core, 2.8GHz
    8GB (4x2GB) memory
    1TB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB Display Adapter
    Apple Magic Mouse
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
Apple BootCamp with Windows 7 Ultimate
Installed OSX, downloaded and installed all updates.
    Installed BootCamp 3.1
Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and had the problem of the black screen during install. This was solved with the fix from apple support (copy latest drivers to a flash drive and continue to install windows). This resulted in apple windows driver 8.681.0.0 and the 16 bit color with banding. Rolled back the driver to 8.661.0.0. The banding issue was solved, but then had intermittent crashing (reset of the driver) in Chrome and REVIT 2011. This driver caused yellow "dots", then lockup and generally would reset. Very disruptive to REVIT.
    SOLUTION:
Went to ATI website and downloaded Catalyst 10.4, then manually installed ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 display driver version 8.723.0.0. This display driver has 32 bit color, does NOT exhibit the color banding and has not had screen flicker, driver resets, or crashing in any programs run so far. I use this computer only for Autodesk REVIT 2011. The ATI HD 4850 is not officially supported by Autodesk, but I am able to run REVIT 2011 with hardware acceleration and anti-aliasing with no problems. So far that has been only for one day, but was not able to go more than a few minutes with the previous drivers.
I have not run any speed benchmarks yet, but compared to my Windows 32 bit XP machine, the performance is much improved.

  • IMac late 2009 - beach ball of death

My iMac is hanging a ridiculous amount - Every 30 seconds or so, no matter how few applications are running, I get the beach ball of death. It'll typically stall for a minute or more. Ugh.
I upgraded the RAM to see if that would fix the problem, and it didn't (the computer still hangs when available RAM is in excess of 10GB). I've run the Apple Hardware Test, and there were no problems reported. I've run virus scans, and there were no problems reported. I've upgraded the machine to OSX Lion, and have all of my software updated to current versions.
Please let me know if you have any ideas for a solution!
    System specs:

    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
    Thanks,

Yes... took it back to Mac Store who sent it to their depot who did a deeper scan and it was a failing harddrive.  Thank goodness for Time Machine and having backups... I am not as stressed as I would have been.  However, they reinstalled it with Snow Leopard instead of my purchased Mountain Lion.  When I brought it home I imported from Time Machine.  But another issue reared its head and fought with its password issues (seriously, hours of work there) only to find that I could not upgrade from SL to ML on my disc.  I did a check for software update from the Apple Icon (no Apple Store in SL) and it downloaded 1.6 GB of 5 updates (what appears to be the Java and others that are making the rounds currently).  When this installed I was unable to log in at all, unable to get past the login screen, with some heavy duty serious lag and blue screens.  So I am BACK at the Mac Store and having them do a complete wipe (again) and installation of Mountail Lion this time.  In theory I should be able to take my machine with a new harddrive, Mountain Lion installed, back home and import form Time Machine.
Preach it from the rooftops and mountains... buy an external hard drive and install Time Machine.  Seriously!  Do it now!  I am very happy that I finally, after a year, got around to doing this in time.

  • I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.  I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion.

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
    Two points, Steve:
    1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
    2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

  • IMac late 2009 crashing with Maverick

I have a problem with my iMac (late 2009) that I cannot solve. It has become very slow, and crashes regularly after some time. Impossible to repair it, neither from the disk recovery partition, nor an external HD boot and using Disk Utility. So everytime I have to download Maverick again and install it to be able to work. I have noticed that after the fresh installation, and and a few days of working, Disk Utility shows problems with Disk permissions that need to be repaired. This occurs systematically.
To complete the story, the iMac was working fine when I bought it, but was returned to Apple for the HD substitution (Apple replacement programme). After this, and/or after installing Maverick (but I am not sure the 2 things are related), the problem started.
I have also tried PRAM resetting, no effect. Any suggestion?

For 2009 iMac owners on Mavericks, I recommend this procedure. Saved me a lot of frustration after almost a month of constant crashes and getting no work done.
I downloaded a temperature monitor to see what was happening. Before the fix, the temperature on the "north bridge heat sink” would just go up and up without fail. Particularly when using flash or a video related application. It would just keep rising until until the graphics card just shuts down.
It’s a 3 year old bug related to 10.6.3 and GPU drivers (ATI/AMD). Here’s the link to the guy who figured it out and should be testing for apple. You have to use terminal to solve the issue. He explains everything in detail.
    http://www.pauloamgomes.net/blog/fix-weird-os-x-freeze-imacs-late-2009
After the fix, the temperature at the graphics card stays level. I’ve also decided to use a fan control app for the moment so temperatures stay around 50 and the iMac runs like it should. Even in my hot room in the summer.
Been crashless since doing the procedure. Try it out. better than lugging a 27" iMac around town.

  • IMac late 2009 gives beach ball. All test return normal.

I have an iMac late 2009 model 27 inch. update to Mavericks (10.9.1)
Returning from holiday, I found my iMac dead slow, with spinng beach balls on every click. Until now I have done ....
Create new user account, logged in as this new user.
    reset PRAM / NVRAM
    boot up in safe mode
boot up in recovery mode, perform disk test. (all normal)
I managed to copy the most important directories to an external storage. Got more and more read/write errors.
    iMac had become unusable slow.
Made bootable USB stick, used this to boot and did a complete HD erase.
    Clean installed Maverick.
    Problem still persist.
Performed AHT (Apple Hardware Test) in extented mode. No error founds.
Performed Black Magic Disktest, around 110 MB/s seems normal speed.
After reboot, the first application start up fast (which gives me hope) but starting the second app, takes several minutes with this spinning beach ball.
Anyone here having simular problems or otherwise can point me to a solution?

Thanks for you advise. I did a clean install, so without any third party software like Trusteer Rapport.
On you advice I ran EtreCheck. This is the result:

  • IMac late 2009 with 6GB RAM, slow with Yosemite

Have you ever used that small pc computers with slow processors, called netbooks? This is what my super fast iMac late 2009 (6GB RAM) with Mavericks turned into, after upgrading it to Yosemite OS X.
I mean, processor itself doesn't look to busy, but user experience is click and wait (when nothing happens, I almost want to click again but then action happens). Opening window animation is like slide show - it is not smooth as it was before, with Mavericks.
Anybody with iMac late 2009 can confirm this or is it my setup only?
I have the basic late 2009 model, except I upgraded it to 6GB RAM soon after I purchased it.
This is how my About this Mac looks like:
And this is how my hard disks look like:
Nothing specially busy here, just slow Yosemite. When I open Safari, Mail, iPhoto and iTunes, it is not good to open any other app, because I might wait much more. I caught my self using iPad while opening fifth app on iMac (just to get an idea, how very slow it feels).

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • Constant Disconnection from Airport Extreme Networked iMac (late 2009)

I keep trying to copy fairly large files (2-7GB) over my Aiport Extreme (latest—5th generation) network from a early 2011 Macbook Pro to a 27" iMac (late 2009), and I keep getting disconnected from the iMac while the file is copying. I've tried repairing permissions on every computer in the house and restarting them, but I'm still having issues. I have no issues copying files to another late 2011 Macbook Pro in the house, so it seems to be happening only when I copy them to the iMac. The iMac is running Snow Leopard and the Macbook Pros are running Lion, so could that have something to do with it?
Additionally, I had been trying a wireless extended network with another previous generation Airport Extreme, but I found the connection wasn't much stronger with the extension, so I've just been leaving the second Airport Extreme unplugged. I've had that unplugged for months and haven't had any issues, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm hoping this isn't a sign of something being wrong with the Aiport card in the iMac. Anyone have any ideas?

    Bump?

  • How to install windows 7 on Imac late 2009 using Vmware/Vbox

Hey guys. Here's the thing. I've installed Windows 8 on my imac late 2009 but then i realized that there's no bootcamp drivers for it (check image).
everything works fine except for the video drivers that crash everytime when i install any driver (bootcamp or manually).
So I've searched on many forums n i found a guy that could do that by using Vmware/Virtualbox by accessing the full disk n installing it from there.
    Here's what we wrote -> (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1526883)
"Thanks for the suggestions, but installing from usb wasn't working, and refit didn't recognise the external dvd drive too (it was in the list, but when i tried to load it i got an error).
But i found a solution, not usual procedure but still good and easy to do.
I installed virtualbox, created a virtual machine with the full disk access (you'll have to unmount all the partitions first and run virtualbox as root), started installing windows, when the copy of the files ended and the vm was rebooting i simply closed it and rebooted my imac and finished the installation directly on the imac, everything went well...
    Thanks again for the help"
    Important notes :
    - My superdrive is broken
    - I can't boot efi windows 7 (cause it needs efi 2.0)
    So i might ask u 2 things..
1- Is there a way that i can install all those drivers on windows 8.
2- Can u describe how he did that with Vmware/Virtualbox?

I can't. Just like i said. My superdrive is broken so the only way is to boot from usb but my imac's efi firmware is 1.0 and to boot a windows 7 efi you must have at least efi firmware 2.0. I managed to install windows 8 cause it needed efi firmware 1.0 that's why.

Can I use my 27"iMac late 2009 as an external display for a non apple product such as a cable box?

To get TV on your iMac off the cable box you would need to use an external TV tuner device such as the company ElGato is highly regarded for.  I have used one of their EyeTV products for many years with my iMac to watch television shows from my Comcasst cable TV box.  You can look at the models here:

    Can I use 27' iMac(Later 2009) as a display for Mac Pro(future 2013)?

    See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display
