Black screen / installation question

Hello! I am trying to get Java3D up and running & then try writing an app. I have jdk1.3.1_04 with windows 98 w/ directX 8.1
My HelloUniverse demo app launches, but then I only get a black screen. I am assumming I am supposed to see more....
Any suggestions? I have read the installation documents, but hopefully I am missing something simple??
Thanks!!

wow. ok, thank you!
I upgraded to jdk(1.4) and changed out my j3d from the DirectX version to the OpenGL version. Success!
Do you have any idea why the DirectX version didn't work? is the OpenGL implementation typcially more robust, even on a windows platform?

  • [Solved] Black screen - Installation issues on Dell Inspiron 1720

    Hi,
I'm new to Archlinux, and i want to post my experience/issues of my first installation:
I performance the core installation (base + devel packages and wireless tools as extra package)
    relevant hardware/drivers used:
    b44 for broadcom nic (wired)
    iwl3945 for my wireless nic
intel g965 graphics card (intel GM965 express chipset - xf86-video-intel driver)
Installation went ok till i had to upgrade the system:
    pacman -Suy (after package synchronization)
    glibc: /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zdump exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zic exists in filesystem
After some research on the wiki i found that i had to query the packages to know if those files are owned by a program or not (if no pakcage owns those i could remove them, but it was not the case)
    pacman -Qo tzselect
    pacman -Qo zdump
    pacman -Qo zic
All were owned by the package tzdata:
so i reinstalled the package tzdata:
    pacman -S tzdata
Has this to be filed as a bug or is this a stupid newbie error? (did the installation on a virtual machine, on a laptop (twice) and always got this error)
After that i was able to upgrade the system.
Following that i installed the video card drivers:
pacman -S xf86-video-intel and i rebooted the system.
After reboot i got the grub screen, booted the system and got a black screen (last thing i saw as something like loading udevevents..)
Googling again and looking the forums here, i read that i had to chroot my environment and update the system again (pacman -Suy -> which did not help).
Soo after some more searching i found 2 things:
    - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … odesetting  : i added this in menu.lst: nomodeset
    - i blacklisted the intel driver
Rebooted and i my graphics were working again.
So later on i'll test if the parameter solved my problem, or blacklisting the driver.
    - i'll unblacklist the driver and reboot -> if it works then i know it's that parameter
    - if not ok, i'll blacklist the driver and remove the parameter from the menu.lst
I hope to find what's causing the issue.
Anyone having issues with the intel driver?
    Thanks for sharing your experience/info.

Getting a little bit further, it requires a lot of configuration to get what you want..
    - I just installed fluxbox
    - added my user to the sudo group (allowing to reboot)
    - installed Slim
What's i've noticed also is that when you select an interface in etc/rc.conf, for example, eth0, and it's not connected at bootup, you lose like 10 seconds before the boot process proceeds.
If you out-comment that line, you get a red line (error) saying that no interface is definded.
I guess i'll just have to disable the network daemon at startup and install some kind of network connection manager for my wireless at logon.

  • Black screen during installation of XP on Mini

I'm trying to install XP 32 SP2 onto the kids' Mini running 10.6.4.
Disk partitioning goes fine, booting from the XP CD goes fine, the installer's first blue screen comes up just fine, I watch the usual seven tons of drivers load in the status bar at the bottom of the screen, and then... The screen goes black. I was expecting the usual questions about how to format the partition, but instead... nothing.
    Any ideas?

The monitor supports both VGA and DVI-D. I was using DVI-D.
On a hunch, I slapped a DVI-D/VGA adapter on the back of the Mini and swapped in a VGA cable.
Suddenly, I got the disk formatting screen I expected instead of the black screen.

  • There is a problem on my mac mini. I install windows7 in my mac then i cancelled the installation did not finish..after that i saw the black screen on my monitor..

There is a problem on my mac mini. I install windows7 in my mac then i cancelled the installation did not finish..after that i saw the black screen on my monitor untill now the monitor is black..

It maybe trying to boot from the incomplete install.
Try starting your Mac while holding down the Option key, it should then list all the available boot drives including the Mac OS X one. Boot from the Mac one and then you can wipe the damaged PC one or set the Mac to stay booting in to OS X.

  • Black Screen, Grey Screen, then flashing question mark, now frozen....

    hi everyone,
i know i have probably the most common problem - and i've tried to read all about the logic board problems which i'm fairly certain i have.
I realize i will most likely have to buy a new macbook - but before i do - i need to retrieve files that are on my ibook g3 (bought in early 2003).
This is what has happened in the past 2 days:
    1. I can hear the power start up (and chimes) but screen is completely black.
    2. Tried resetting PRAM and PMU, now blank grey screen sometimes appears.
    3. Now, grey screen with flashing question mark in the middle alternating with mac face. So i assumed this meant it couldn't locate my hard drive. So i found my ibook install disc and inserted it and restarted while holding down "C" key.
    4. Grey screen - with Apple (thought this was success) - then it turned to a large grey circle with a line through it (a slash). And then suddenly frozen.
Since then it has just been a lot of lines through the screen alternating with completely grey screen, etc. along with any of the above-mentioned outcomes. I tried pushing on the lower-left-hand corner of the computer and yes, it affects the display - more or less lines, etc.
How can i get my old files off of it? Do i buy a new macbook and connect them via fire wire cable and try that way? or will that not work if the above is happening? Or is it possible for someone (myself or perhaps IT professionals) to remove the hard drive from my old ibook and place it somewhere where i can copy over the files?
Any help is appreciated - i know this is a popular topic - i've just had so many weird outcomes in the past 2 days i'm not exactly sure which solution (if any) would work for me right now.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi Ronda -
I do have access to another mac (mini) with firewire at my work. Or I might go out and buy a new macbook this weekend as well (preferable since I don't really want my personal files on my work computer, etc.) But yes, i need to get my old files off of this one.
I have never added additional memory or anything to it really since I got it. So it should be the original specs:
    iBook (14.1 LCD 900 MHz 32 VRAM)
    256MB memory
    Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
    Hard drive: 40GB
Not a lot of space was remaining if i recall. I did get the 'disk full' notice a few weeks ago, but i did end up deleting a lot of stuff. Needless to say, i'm sure it was quite full, but not at maximum when this happened.
Update: Last night i tried to start it up again, and it would ONLY go to a black screen this time (ie. no display at all). What do you think i should do?

  • Black Screen on Windows 7 installation

The issue is INSTALLING WINDOWS-7 FROM the BOOTCAMP PROCESS.
When it comes time to install WINDOWS...I get a black screen.
Now I am wondering if this is an OEM disk, even though I have the same windows-7 OS installed in virtualbox on this machine......
COuld this be it? What a cluster yes?
    <Edited By Host>

I just got back from my Genius Bar.
I was having Kernal panics anyway so I thought I would just stop by and have everything checked out.
The issue of the black screen: we plugged in the Mac mini to their peripherals and hooked up a superdrive and booted my alleged OEM disk NO  PROBLEM. as a matter of fact my jaw dropped opened when we plugged in my superdrive and the windows installation screen appeared. NO BLACK SCREEN. The genius said it could have been not enough power from the bus to run the superdrive; like a signal thing going on. At any rate, it wasnt the superdrive and it wasnt an alleged OEM disk. when I get it back I will try to install boot camp and start dancing.
I have had the Mac mini for less than a month and the HARD DRIVE has failed. WOW! So it apperas that and i will see thursday, since I have TIME MACHINE on a 1 TB drive, restoring my system will be nothing like a similar fiasco on a WINDOWS system. My Mac book pro system arrives tommorow. Lets see if i can mouse that up!

  • Boot Camp: Early 2011 MacBook Pro boots to black screen with blinking cursor after windows 7 installation.

I bought and downloaded the windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bit iso, then proceeded to perform a correct burn to a DVD one at the slowest speed and one at the fastest. all went well. so I open Boot Camp assistant and follow the instructions to the letter, downloaded the driver support to the flash drive. partitioned my drive with more than enough room 150 gb. its starts its install. I get through everything seamlessly where I put in my info all with the exception of my activation code. yet it still continues to finalize the install and does another restart. boots back up to either A. black screen saying press any key to boot to my install disk. B. if I take it out just a white curser. also I read it may be because I had the flash drive in while I was trying to boot so I removed it as well, same result. any input would be much appreciated.

  • Windows 8.1 installation: Black screen with blinking cursor

    Hi!
Trying to install Windows 8.1 on my MacBook Pro. Worked fine last time I tried. Now, however, using the same DVD, after `Press any key to boot to CD or DVD...`, I'm taken straight to a black screen with a blinking cursor and nothing is happening.
I've seen similar cases, ie. Black screen with only mouse cursor on it - Windows 7 instalation Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums - but they usually occur after the installation welcome screens etc., or after the install itself has succeeded.
I just ran `fsck` and found no errors.
    Thanks!

  • Black screen before Windows installation

I have already installed Windows 7 before and I had no problems with the installation. The reason why I decided to reinstall Windows is when I was trying to start BootCamp I only got black screen. This started to happen after  I did hard reboot. I did this because Windows freezed.
I deleted Windows on my MacBook and then I tried to install Windows again. After BootCamp Assistant splited hard drive (1st part for Mac OS X,  2nd part for Windows) OS X shutted down and after that I heard Mac sound (sound when You start Mac). And then I can only see black screen ( also there was a console cursor for a second ).
Why black screen started to happen?
    and
    How can I avoid it?

Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • New mac Mini 2011/lion Windows 7 black screen at installation

    Hi,
I'm switching to Mac and finally got the new mini i5 2.5Ghz and I'm trying to install W7 professional.
I'm using an external USB dvd r/w unit (a samsung)
In bootcamp i was able to create the driver disk and repartition the existing hard drive in two halfs of 256GB each
But when bootcamp assistant restarts the mini in order to boot from the windows installation disc, I just get a black screen and the W7 installer does not boot,
At that point neither the 32 nor the 64 bit version of W7 boots. The screen simply remains black.
I can boot from the os x partition (keeping the option key pressed unitl the boot disk selection cames out), and Lion works, but any attempt to boot from the dvdrom with w7 fails.
Anyone else encountered this issue and can help ?
    Thanks!

    Go to http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst118DriverPreview.aspx
and install the ATI 11.8 preview drivers.
Once installed, open the catalyst Control center (you should have a red icon in the notification tray)
and in one of the settings there is an "overscan" setting.
you should see a slider, position it to "0%" and you should have full screen.
For some reason the overscan defautl setting is set at -15%, hence the black bars.
I spent quite a lot of time on this, mainly because the bootcamp ATI drivers did not have any setting page I could find. I then installedd the official 11.7 drivers, but I could not get the Catalist Control Center to show up, not sure why.
Finally after reading forums for hours I gave the 11.8 a try, as it seems thare are some improvements (but mostly performances) for the HD 6xxx graphics cards, then finally it worked and i could access the overscan settings.
You may want to try first to see if you have the overscan setting before installing any new drivers.
    Hope this helps

i get a black screen during windows 7 installation on bootcamp 5.0.1 , it wont install

    Hi wb2009,
I haven't found that the TV would be an issue, but did find an article that states to not have extra USB devices connected.
Boot Camp: Windows installation boots to black screen with blinking cursor
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4536
The Windows installation may boot to a black screen with a blinking cursor. This can occur if you use a USB optical drive or USB Flash drive for the Windows installation and another USB device is also connected to the computer.
There's another article that mentions Windows XP or Vista that may apply.

  • Windows 8 installation failed : black screen

    Hello,
I downloaded an .iso file of Windows 8.1 which appears to be fine. I did all the manipulation to install it with bootcamp, but when the system is restarting to launch windows for the 1st time, I have always the same message : " No bootable device -- insert boot key and press any key" but actually my keyboard and my mouse aren't working, so the installation cannot be completed.
The other thing is that when I'm restarting my computer and press Alt (to select the OS X start), I have an unknown partition due to this failed installation of Windows. It's called "EFI BOOT". And when I'm launching it, it's doing the " No bootable device -- insert boot key and press any key"  message again.
Please tell me what to do I'm stuck !

Hey, ive got a cx640 64 bit i7 and the same black screen prob. however it hasn't been much of a pain lately. everytime i boot from off it starts right up to the login screen. only when i restart i get a blackscreen before login. What i have learned so far from researching all over the place (dells seem to have the same prob too) is that the black screen occurs due to the multiple graphics (in my case nvidea and intel hd graphics). If only one graphic is activated, windows restarts fine. Of course this is not an option if ive got hardware i want to use it. I recently read something about a multi graphics switch driver which intel doesnt support (anyone knowing anything about it?).  There is a chance that n nvidea driver update will fix the problem for us.
to all of those who didnt know yet put ur pc to sleep by hitting the power button once then wake it up by hitting it again and ur blackscreen will be gone
    (i call this suboptimal )
Windows 8 have the projector keys - Win+P - since the system has an video output port its sending the display signal to that (probably) - use the Win+p keys to change the choice - 4 modes - pc screen - duplicate - extend - second screen only - you might get your appropriate NVidia display

  • Boot camp installation attempt yields black screen, also phantom monitor

    Hey all,
So... I went to install XP on my early 2008 MacBook Black. I've done it before, so I figured there wouldn't be any problems (I had previously removed it). Only, when I attempted to boot from the CD... it appeared to boot, and I heard the CD drive working, but all I got was a black screen. Not even a blinking cursor. I know the CD is fine as it works in virtual machines. I attempted to use my Vista disc on my MacBook just after this and got the same result: drive access sounds, but a black screen.
Then I discovered another problem... my Mac has a phantom external display. I almost think that perhaps when I boot off a Windows CD, that perhaps it is trying to use a display which doesn't exist? I won't really be able to test it until I get home (I'm out at college) and can plug in my external display...
I had an external display hooked up in a previous installation of OS X... I pulled over the settings from that previous installation via time machine after reinstalling. That would certainly explain the phantom display. What is not explained is why I can't get rid of it. I've been trashing the plists that other threads recommend, resetting the PRAM... nothing really works. Detect displays doesn't help either. I'm wondering just what I have to do to get my Mac to realize there is no external monitor. I've read numerous threads on this, all culminating in no avail. Any advice, anyone?

I tried resetting SMC too... still nothing. I almost think I should try booting from OS X's install CD, and see if the phantom monitor exists there... if it does, then I know there's a hardware problem of some kind. If it's not there, then I should reinstall OS X, and pull stuff over from Time Machine manually instead of automatically this time. I'm guessing that if I pull over user accounts automatically that it will recreate the problem. My only problem with doing stuff manually is that I'll have to jump through a few hoops to get my iTunes library back.

  • Apples update didn't work for me: Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7

Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 - Apple Support
I have followed each of the steps listed in the link above with no success.
Prior to adding the extra drivers I was able to start the Windows install process up to reformatting the "Windows" Bootcamp drive. After that the computer would go through some instal processes and eventually restart. After the restart the screen would go black. The black screen lead me to the  Apple Support link above dated March 5 2015. After going through steps listed in the link above, I get an error message stating that the D:\Sources\instal.win. file cannot be located. I am forced to restart the computer at that point and theWindows install process attempts to start again but always ends up at the same point.
Note: I am installing windows 7 Pro from a DVD. I scanned the AutoUnattend.xml file and noticed that it refers to "Windows 7 ULTIMATE" but not "Pro" or any others that I could see. (see below). Could that be part of the issue?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />

Here is an over-simplified explanation of WIM and CLG files. Assume your DVD Media contains
    W7- Ultimate
    W7- Professional
    W7- Home Premium
    W7- Home Basic
    WIM Files
    File1
    y

    File2

    y
    y
    File3
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    File4
    y
    y
    y
The File .wim will contains a compressed image which contains File [1...5].
The W7-Ultimate .clg will have 5 entries, with all set to 'Y'.
The W7-Professional .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','Y','Y'.
The W7-Home Premium  .clg will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','Y'.
The W7-Home Basic .clg file will have 5 entries, with 'Y','Y','N','N','N'.
This allows a single .wim Image file on the DVD media to be used to install any of the 5 flavors of Windows. When you enter your product key, the Installer knows what specific W7 variant you have the key for and will tell the WIM to extract the specific files the installer needs to be extracted.
    The following line
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 ULTIMATE" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
is telling that a retail product key will be entered, which should go look for this specific .clg file (from the five you already have on disk).  You can test if it will work for you by changing this line to the following
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:d:/sources/install.wim#Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
If it does not work, the other issue can be related to device discovery. Typically A: and B: device names are reserved for Floppy Drives. C: is your internal HDD.
D: can either point to the Optical drive, or the USB. The normal convention is that the removable media is named from Z: backwards. Y: and Z: are usually used for Network drives, so X: should be your USB. First try with the change to "Professional". If it does not work,
