Black screen on HD monitor when using DVI cable

Hi there,
I've recently purchased a Samsung P2270 monitor with the intention of playing HD content from my mac mini, however, it would appear that this isn't possible.
Connecting it up with a 18pin DVI-D cable doesn't seem to yield anything on the screen. Wondering if it could be a faulty monitor, I tried the DVI-VGA cable instead and thankfully managed to get something on the screen.
But being human, i'm still set on trying to get 1920x1080 resolution out of my mac mini!
Checking the display tab within System Preference, it would appear that the maximum resolution option i have on my mac mini is 1280x800. However, I have an Intel GMA 950 graphics card on board, and it should be able to handle HD ie 1920x1080.
I've got a grandfather of a mac mini - Intel core duo 1.83 GHz, purchased it in 2007. Running Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger on it.
Has anyone any experience hooking up a similar mac mini to a HD display with success? Is there any way around this problem? Or am i doomed to looking at black bars on either side of my display till i upgrade?
I'd be grateful for any advice/suggestions

Looking at the specs of your monitor, I see that the connection is listed as a DVI-I connection. You should try a suitable cable before giving up.

• Black Screen (source and preview) when using GPU acceleration (CUDA) [NVidia GTX 780M]

Hi guys!
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 7 (Ult) on a machine equipped with NVidia GTX 780M (4 GB VRAM) graphics card. The source and the preview monitors are both black if I select GPU accelerated rendering. There is a yellow bar above the timeline clips, I can hear the sound tracks, but there is no image. If I choose the Software Only rendering (CPU) then I do see the image as well, but the real-time playback and rendering times are awful!
At first, the application would not allow me to use the GPU acceleration using NVidia’s CUDA processing. Once I entered my video card name in the “cuda_supported_cards.txt” file in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 folder I was able to choose between Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration CUDA.
I tried downgrading the video card driver to the previous stable version and reinstall Pr – no go. How do I make Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 work with my NVidia GTX 780M video card?
Your insight is appreciated!
P.S. I used to work on a different machine equipped with NVidia GTX 670M card (which is also missing from the officially supported Pr CS6 cards list) and I never had any issues of this nature with that laptop.

Hi there,
As stated before, I had the same problem. Apparantly the solution for me was to check the Nvidia settings. My setup has both an onboard GPU and a Nvidia GPU (on purpose specifically for video editing and gaming). Normally the system should switch to Nvidia automatically. However, the Nvidia settings for Premiere where set to favor the onboard GPU. After changing this. everything works fine again!
kind regards. Bart

There is a problem on my mac mini. I install windows7 in my mac then i cancelled the installation did not finish..after that i saw the black screen on my monitor untill now the monitor is black..

It maybe trying to boot from the incomplete install.
Try starting your Mac while holding down the Option key, it should then list all the available boot drives including the Mac OS X one. Boot from the Mac one and then you can wipe the damaged PC one or set the Mac to stay booting in to OS X.

• My iphone 4 has a black screen and gets warm when charging.

My iphone 4 has a black screen and gets warm when charging. also, the battery runs out unusually fast.  I can still receive calls etc and can see a 'backlight' come on behind the black screen when buttons are pressed, but I can not see anything on the screen. I have tried restoring the phone from recovery mode in iTunes but this does not fix the problem. If it were the screen that needs replacing then would the phone get warm?
thanks for your help

Look in the dock and see if you can see any scaly blue-ish stuff. Look in the headphone jack under bright light - can you see anything pink?
Take it to an Apple store. They can help you with a repair. If you take it anywhere else, Apple will not repair your phone if anything goes wrong.

• How can I get audio to play from my TV when using hdmi cable?  Video looks great, just no sound.

How can I get audio to play from my TV when using hdmi cable?  Video looks great, just no sound.
I've tried plugging the hdmi into the TV directly and the receiver.
I get video every time.  HBO to Go , Xfinity, ABC, Youtube, etc...
just no audio.  Any suggestions?
I've tried starting the apps then plugging in the hdmi cable.
I never tried this before I upgraded to IOS 5.

Claudiamil-
I had not tried it with mine since upgrading to iOS 5, so I just did.  I'm using a small Vizio HDTV.  I did not try YouTube, but did try several videos and musical numbers.  In all cases there was sound, including stereo when the source had it.
I assume you are getting sound from the iPad when the adapter is not connected, so the volume is not turned down.  Dah*veed's suggestion to reset may be what you need.

• Samsung 205BW goes blank when using DVI

Hi
I have a G4 Mac Mini. I recently purchased a Samsung 205BW 20in widescreen LCD monitor.
I connected it via the DVI port on my mini with the DVI cable that came with the monitor and it seemed to work great but occasionally the screen will flick black as if there was nothing connected to it. It happens most noticeably when I go from a fullscreen quicktime video to the desktop or if I activate Expose. Also if the Mini goes to sleep and I try to wake it the screen stays black and I either have to reboot or change to using the VGA cable.
The monitor works perfectly if I use a DVI-VGA adaptor and connect to the VGA port on the monitor but I'd prefer to use DVI.....
I read on here of people using SwitchResX to change the settings for the monitor. I downloaded it but I don't really know what to input in the custom settings... perhaps someone here can help?

I had the exact problem you report with my core duo Mac Mini connected to a Syncmaster 204B. This problem persisted when I returned the monitor several times to Samsung for replacement 204B's. They eventually upgraded me to a refurbished 204T and the problem disappeared.
It seems to me that Samsung has some real problems with screen blanking when their monitors are hooked by DVI to certain Macintoshes. For anyone contemplating a Samsung monitor, I'd recommend another brand until it's known that this screen blanking problem has been resolved with all Samsung models.

• Qosmio G30 - black screen on external monitor

Qosmio G30 (PQG32E) running Vista Home Premium, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 driver, 7.15.10.9813
I cannot get a picture on an external monitor (tried two different monitors). Specifically:
'Windows Mobility Center' will recognise that a monitor is connected
'NVIDIA Control Panel - Change Display Configuration' will recognise the external monitor ('Select the displays you would like to use' shows 'Laptop Display + Sony SDM-HS73', which is the plugged-in ext monitor)
but no matter what configuration I try, using Fn+F5 or Change Display Configuration, I cannot get anything but a (backlit) black screen on the external monitor.
The monitor is receiving a video signal correctly: when turned off under a laptop-only Fn+F5 setting, it shows a 'no signal' warning, but when turned on again I just get black.
I have tried changing resolution settings for the external monitor. They exactly match the monitor's native resolution. Still nothing.
Tried 'Clone' mode and 'Dual View' mode.
Tried various different orders of switching the laptop and monitor on, plugging and unplugging, etc.
Have installed latest driver from this Toshiba site (as above). Have NOT tried installing any other driver from the NVIDIA site, since it warns to use Toshiba's - but is that worth a try?
The laptop's own screen and all other aspects of video are fine.
It has worked ok in the past (I think before I did the upgrade to Vista, when it was still on XP).
Do I just wait for another driver update from Toshiba, and perhaps Vista SP1?
I'm really hoping this is not a hardware issue, since the monitor is recognised etc....
Jonathan

What port did you use?
The external monitor (analog) port or the D-video out port?
As far as I know if you have used the external monitor (analog) port then you should choose the Analog display in the nVidia -> current display
Then you could use the button FN+F5 to switch between the both displays.

• Blank screen for few seconds when using "bright applications"

Hi
I have my MSI GF5600 VTDR256 for almost a year now and still facing the same problem (after various driver updates still existing :-( )
When I use application with a lot of bright colors, like Apple iTunes for example, the screen goes blank for 2 or 3 seconds and then returns to my application. Sometimes the screen isn't built up like it should be (pieces of text unreadable, desktop showing "through" some parts of the application). Problem also occurs when quickly scrolling websites with a lot of white in it.
I connected my Philips 170B4 17" TFT using a DVI cable to the MSI card. Don't know whether the problem occurs when using a VGA cable to connect my monitor.
The following screenshot illustrates how my screen looks after having another blank screen:
Somebody any suggestions?

I recently reinstalled my computer, so I started with the latest driver at that moment and the problem occured.
I have a 400 Watt dual fan power supply feeding:

- 1024 MB PC2700 memory
- MSI FX5600 VTDR256
- 1 onboard RAID controller with two 20 GB Harddisk RAID 1

• Boot camp installation attempt yields black screen, also phantom monitor

Hey all,
So... I went to install XP on my early 2008 MacBook Black. I've done it before, so I figured there wouldn't be any problems (I had previously removed it). Only, when I attempted to boot from the CD... it appeared to boot, and I heard the CD drive working, but all I got was a black screen. Not even a blinking cursor. I know the CD is fine as it works in virtual machines. I attempted to use my Vista disc on my MacBook just after this and got the same result: drive access sounds, but a black screen.
Then I discovered another problem... my Mac has a phantom external display. I almost think that perhaps when I boot off a Windows CD, that perhaps it is trying to use a display which doesn't exist? I won't really be able to test it until I get home (I'm out at college) and can plug in my external display...
I had an external display hooked up in a previous installation of OS X... I pulled over the settings from that previous installation via time machine after reinstalling. That would certainly explain the phantom display. What is not explained is why I can't get rid of it. I've been trashing the plists that other threads recommend, resetting the PRAM... nothing really works. Detect displays doesn't help either. I'm wondering just what I have to do to get my Mac to realize there is no external monitor. I've read numerous threads on this, all culminating in no avail. Any advice, anyone?

I tried resetting SMC too... still nothing. I almost think I should try booting from OS X's install CD, and see if the phantom monitor exists there... if it does, then I know there's a hardware problem of some kind. If it's not there, then I should reinstall OS X, and pull stuff over from Time Machine manually instead of automatically this time. I'm guessing that if I pull over user accounts automatically that it will recreate the problem. My only problem with doing stuff manually is that I'll have to jump through a few hoops to get my iTunes library back.

• Black screen on resume from sleep using open source AMD/ATI driver

When waking from sleep using systemctl suspend or pm-suspend , I am presented with a black screen. I can still open programs, type, etc. but cannot see what I am doing. I usually just wind up rebooting from whatever terminal I had open, but again I can't see what I am typing. Upon reboot, the screen starts back up again. Everything else seems to resume from sleep just fine, it's just the screen that won't turn back on.
I came from Ubuntu and had this same problem there. However, I only had this problem when using the open source xf86-video driver; when using the proprietary drivers, I was able to suspend/resume just fine. So it seems this problem is specific to the open source drivers.
If I'm using an external monitor, my external monitor will resume just fine after waking from sleep, but the laptop screen will not.
Googling around shows this is a common problem with AMD/ATI cards, and after a lot of attempts and failures I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has solved this problem.
What I've tried so far (without success):
-various quirks included with pm-utils to turn on dpms after resume
-xrandr after resumption from sleep
==xrandr --output LVDS --off (If used without suspending (so while the screen still works) this seems to crash Gnome the first time around, but Gnome automatically restarts. If used a second time, it completely blanks the screen and requires a reboot)
==xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900
-xset dpms force on or xset dpms force off after resumption from sleep
-vbetool dpms off and vbetool dpms on results in error message "Real mode call failed"
-scripts using vbetool or xrandr when resuming from sleep
-switching between virtual consoles and gnome using alt-ctrl-fn-f1 and alt-ctrl-fn-f2 keys
My setup:
-HP Envy dv7
-UEFI dual-boot with Windows 8
-AMD Radeon HD 7640G
-xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 driver
-Gnome DE using GDM login manager
Thank you.
EDIT: I did try using the proprietary drivers for a time, but found I couldn't adjust my brightness. At first I thought working suspension > adjustable brightness, but I quickly changed my mind after one night of trying to work on an unadjustable maximally bright screen.

Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.

• Black screen in source monitor

I am trying to synch a good audio file with my .mov. But when I do exactly what is described here Automatically synchronize audio and video files in Adobe Premiere Pro CC based on audio waves - YouTube I just get a black screen in the source monitor. Why?? Shouldent I be seeing the good sound synched with the video file playing in the source monitor?  I am new to premiere so maybe I have a setting off? Please advise!

Okay, that answered my question. I didnt know the in and out points in the source monitor had to stretch the entire length of the clip when I merge them. But I have another question. As shown in the image, my show is already cut with different takes of the same performance with the reference camera audio. How do I synchronize the good audio for each clip in the timeline?
When I laso around the first clip in the timeline and the audio (mono 001.wav) underneath it and select Synchronize it moves my clip down the timeline out of place. I want it to stay where it is...
