Black screen on HP ENVY x360 TouchSmart

I was in the middle of watching Netflix off my HP ENVY x360 TouchSmart when I went to adjust my laptop and accidentally pressed the power button on the left side. I've done this before and once I press the power button that blinks on and off it turns right back on. This time the screen turned on but was black. I tried moving the mouse around but would only catch glimpses of it. I can't get anything to show up on the screen and sometimes the screen will turn completely off but the power button indicates it's on. I'm not a tech wiz at all so it would be helpful if a solution was explained as simply as possible. Please and thank you!

After a lot of searching and patience I narrowed down the issue to the ASPM (Active State Power Management) being disabled on my notebook. I used the command powercfg -energy using cmd with administrator privilages to scan th system and this was error recorded. Platform Power Management Capabilities: PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) DisabledPCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer. Please help fix this as it is the sole reason why the computer wont sleep. HP Pavilion 15 P027TX

  • [BIOS Update Failure] HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j021tx stuck at black screen on startup

    Hello
So I decided to update the BIOS on my laptop because it was on the recommended list of driver updates. It started off smooth at first, but then the screen turned black and just stayed like that for like an hour. Having read from other posts that BIOS updates should take a minute if properly executed, in the fear that my update is not working properly I decided to shut it down. (I had to pull out the battery to shut it down because even the power off button was not working).
But then when I switched it back on the screen remained black forever with the LED near capslock flashing twice. I tried pressing windows key and B key method but didn't make a difference, pulling out the battery and the AC power method didn't work also. I did refer to the HP help document that said "if your capslock LED is flashing twice, it means it is trying to recover the BIOS so just wait until it reboots itself properly". Well I have been waiting for 20 hours now and I am pretty sure this is not going to work out either.
Any help on what I could do at the moment? I don't want to send it to HP to get repaired cuz that will take weeks while I need it working ASAP since my semester at uni has started already and I am an IT major!
And shame on you HP...why recommend it to me when the update is not proven to be 100% safe....
It is on Windows 8.1 64 bit,

I grasp that you are having an issue with your display.
You stated that you upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 when this occurred.  When I checked the specifications for your notebook, it came with Windows 8.1.

  • HP Envy 14 - black screen after start up screen when trying to recover the system

I have a HP Envy 14 and months ago I got the message "Hard Drive failure imminent".
Well, the HD finally stopped working and I got a Kingston ssd hyperx 240gb to replace it.
I have the HP recovery disks, so I tried to recover my system with them. The 6 disks are used to creat an image and then I have to click "continue" in order to re-initiate the sytem. Then, I get the usual HP start up screen, so I hit enter. Then, I get a black screen (screen is on) and nothing happens. I've done this 4 times and always get the same black screen at the end.
Any suggestions to solve this problem?
    Many thanks.

    Hi
At this point you may consider contacting Kingston to ask them why your SSD is not running after POST when clearly Windows is installed .

  • Windows 10 build 10041 32bit crashed hp envy x2 tablet/notebook black screen

    Hello all,
Upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1 the 10 preview build 10041 (32bit), online upgrade (as machine will not boot from usb), worked well for one day. Then I changed update option from 'only notify me of available updates' to 'automatically install updates for windows' or somesuch.
For two days, can only get black screen using all combinations of shift/ctrl/fn/windows key with f2/f8/f9/f10/f11 keys.
Holding the power button down for brief or long period. With mains power lead inserted or not. With tablet connected to base or not. Ran down the battery, no change.
I suspect the problem is due to the Win 10 O/S is perceived as an alien O/S by the system. Prior to updating to Win 10, I was unable to boot from usb or access legacy boot.
    My machine:

    product number c8c42pa#abg
    serial number 4cn2480dgk
Bios was updated from f12 to f13.

  • TouchSmart 320-1050 Win7 Pro After Windows update, login results in a black screen + white cursor

    Hi ...
After some Microsoft automatic upgrades were done om my HP TouchSmart 320-1050 this week, when I logged in after the reboot, all I got was a blank (black) screen and a white arrow cursor, which worked fine -but there was nothing -no video output on the screen. Even a <CTL><ALT><DEL> did not bring anything up on the screen and I had to force the system down with a hard power down. I tried with user logins and Administrator login but the behaviour was the same.
I could boot and get a picture in SAFE mode but not with a normal boot and login.  There were NO ERRORS in the Windows event logs that seemed to shed any light on the issue.
The system was shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium however I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro so I could join my domain.
I couldn't diagnose the problem -with nothing showing on my screen- so last night I check what updates were installed to see about de-installing them from Safe mode.
After de-installing the most recent Microsoft HotFix (KB2679255) and rebooting .... POOF!  I had my desktop displayed again after I logged in.
I don't know what piece of software was interacting with this HotFix - but thought I should post the issue, just in case someone else encountered the problem... or someone in HP Support wants to investigate ... (Let me know and I'll supply what info I can.)
    Thanks

Attempted to install A8-3850 as the liars here at HP told me I could do several years ago. Was not compatible. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/TouchSmart-PC/Can-I-replace-a-Touchsmart-320-with-a-100TDP-CPU-such-as-the/m-p/1719693#M15259 So I bought an A8-3800 as it now says I can http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-TouchSmart-300-Desktop-PC-series/5146287/model/5157097/document/c02966737#N102 I seat the CPU, boot up, and black screen. • HP Touchsmart 300 random black screen

What would cause an HP Touchsmart 300-1223 to randomly display a pure black screen, no audible beeps or other error indicators. It could be anywhere from hours of usage to ten minutes of usage for this to happen. Whenever the screen randomly goes black the keyboard and mouse "lose-power" as in when they are connected you can visibly see the light under the mouse and on the keyboard, but when the screen goes black the lights go out and everything is unresponsive. Possibly an overheating issue that could be fixed by applying new thermal paste? However, the PC doesn't seem to be overheating at all, it's actually running at  a fairly low temperature.  I don't see how it could be bad drivers or anything of that sort, as I'm running a clean fresh install of Windows 7. I've updated the bios, graphics, and touchscren drivers on the HP touchsmart 300-1223 driver page in case those were the cause and this is still happening An extemely easy way to duplicate this happening is to simply run a virtual machince (virtualbox, etc) and when trying to load the virtual machine it will cause the black screen. In case these are at all related.

  • Envy 17-j029 black screen on boot

Brand new Envy 17-j029.  I was trying to pull an image from the laptop and the software wouldn't see it.  Suggestions online said to disable the accelerator cache, which I did and was able to pull the image.  However, the option to re-add the accelerator cache was greyed out.  I tried wiping out the RAID config but was never able to restore it back to its original config.  I went to boot the recovery discs in hopes it would rebuild the RAID, but when I booted I got a black screen and nothing else.  I've tried everything I can think of, but I can not get an image.  I tried using the EFI bios recovery, but I wiped all partitions setting it up for use here.  Also, the latest BIOS doesn't seem to have the correct revision number for this model anyway.
I don't want to send this brand new computer to HP.  What could possibly be wrong?

  • HP Envy X2 Black Screen on Boot

How do I boot from a USB? The device boots into a black screen. The BIOS works. I need to boot from a USB to initiate Windows recovery. Please help me.

    Hello @nelsx ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you have information about booting to USB on your ENVY x2.
You should be able to perform a recovery with the built in recovery partition by tapping F11 while the notebook turns on.
Otherwise, you may need to enable legacy mode in the BIOS and configure your boot order to allow USB boot. The following guide may help: Creating and Using a Microsoft Recovery USB Drive (Windows 8).

No curs bling lights etc.  I have done the hard reboot, the f2, f7, shift f7 f8 and a myriad of combinations.  I tried the HP bootable diagnostic that I made when I got the lap top.  I do hear a single "beep" when I turn it on so I am assuming the Motherboard is OK.  The WIFI light come on, and the backlights wil turn off an on.  The fingerprint recognizer will recognize my fingerprint by show a white light as usual.  But alas, black screen black screen, black screen.  my bag is empty.  Can anybody help.

  • HP Envy 15 Laptop Notebook Windows 10 Black Screen After Boot

Hello, My issue invloves my laptop notebook which is the HP Envy 15, Product Number: A9P60UAR#ABA. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from my Windows 7 and experienced issues involving very long boot times to load to the log in screen and then all I see before I get to the login screen is a completely black screen with no curser for over a minute on average. I used to be able to load to the log in screen in an average time of 10 to 30 seconds with Windows 7.  After I log into my pc and reach my desktop I tried to put my pc in sleep mode and then try to wake up from sleep mode and then the black screen that happened when I booted my computer happened for about a minute to two minutes before I was able to see the log in screen, usually with my computer completely skipping the password requirement.  This issue is quite agrivating and I have reverted back to Windows 7 sinse this began to happen. I am willing to upgrade back to Windows 10 because I am able to revert back to windows 7 easily. Im not sure if I can fix this issue at this point in time with the lack of updates for drivers with my laptop some how or if others are experiencing the same problem.  If there is more information required to help I will be glad to help with the information. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

    Well..
I found my own solution, for anybody interested:
Now, I am not entirely sure if the video driver crashing is related, because it is working fine now.
But, what I did was hit F8 at boot, went to Windows recovery tools area, and ran system restore to a restore point created by Revo Uninstaller before it uninstalled the AOL Registry files, and it booted up fine.
My thinking, and probably everyone else reading this, is that when it uninstalled the AOL registry files, it must have caused some sort of problem? I scanned the Revo Uninstaller (and the crack I downloaded from PirateBay) with AVG before I even used it, and there was no virus, trojans, malware etc, etc. It was clean. So I don't think it was a virus or anything of that sort. My only thinking is that it must have uninstalled something it shouldn't have, causing Windows to stop functioning.
Don't think it was a RAM problem, because I first booted with my old 1GB module (after the restore) and it booted fine, powered down, and put my 2GB in, and it is working fine. Although I am running off of AC power right now - my battery isn't attached. That is the last variable left untested. I will most certainly post again if something goes wrong when I put my battery in.
I hope you guys want to discuss this, and maybe this will help someone else who has this problem, although mine seems pretty unique.
    Josh
