BLACK SCREEN stating "windows could not start because the following is miss

I installed Bootcamp update 2.1 and then XP SP3.
Now when I start up my Mac I am getting a BLACK SCREEN stating "windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system 32-hal.dll Please re-installl a copy of hte above file"
I tried to use the option key and insert the Windows CD but it won't start up.
Also, when I start up I must use the option key and select the Mac OS and it will start up and everything is fine there. Advice appreciated.

Did you ever solve this? I had updated to BC 2.1 (After updating Apple Software Update al on the Windows side) I waited & just tonight tried to install SP-3. It appeared to install & When I was prompted to restart--I also got the black screen. Mine said:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf
You can attempt to repair the file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at the 1st screen to repair.
I just force powered off & booted into Mac.
I think I need to restart my Mac into Windows (using the Option key ) WHILE THE WINDOWS XP CD is in the optical Drive. Then maybe I’ll get a choice to select ‘r’ to repair at the 1st screen?
You may need to do essentially the same thing. I do not know if this problem is a boot camp problem of just a Windows problem.
Sure is annoying,
Good luck!

    Hi there...
did anyone of you guys manage to run WinXP on a Mac running Leopard (Boot camp 2.0)? I couldn't, trying to do whatever i could- repairing boot.ini according to Microsoft's support site, reinstalling Windows again and again, even copying Windows files from an existing Windows-running machine to the Boot camp partition, nothing helped...

My last post had some good info, here is a repost:
Emerging Info! Apparently there are files in windows that disable the means which we are supposed to format the disk. Two of these file names found so far are UNATTEND.TXT and WINNT.SIF. Some computers may have one or the other files located in the \I386 directory of you XP cd. Apparently there is a way to fix the problem my recopying your XP disc to a new CD and deleting the file out. There are directions on one of the links which I am currently following but have not finished.

Any system or sys32 and any .dll files missing or corrupted errors, usually the only fix is to reinstall windows and anything on hard drive not saved on removable drives...flash, usb, cd or floppy is lost. I've had several sys32.dll file missing or corrupted errors and asked at Best Buy Geek Squad what the fix would cost and that's how I learned the only fix is installing windows.

  • Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt - message

Hi there and apologies in advance if this is a daft or very frequently asked question.
Upon trying to boot up this Toshiba mini NB200 device last night we got this message:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.  it then asked me to press r at the forst screen to start a repair if I have the original set up cd.
The device had to be forced to shutdown previously as it hung when shutting down.
Now multiple reboots (including uncoupling/recoupling the battery) and resetting the settings from start up menu result in the same error message.
The device has no cd drive installed but previously Jerry Lippey (in 2011) saved the day by recommending purchase of a product recovery disc (R10804EN) after a 'flashing cursor issue' at logon.
Has anyone far more clever than I any thoughts (if we're able to borrow a portable cd drive) whether this disc may work again?
Windows XP was/is preinstalled on the PC (we havent the disc) and we've subsequently added MS Works. A total wipe of the device (as long as XP remains?) wont be too much hassle as we havent any data that we're too bothered about on it.
    Many, many thanks in advance

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Bad news. It means the System hive, which is the most important branch of the registry, is corrupt. Unless you have made provisions for this (we always do on XP systems), the fix is too complex for you to handle (KB307545).
I'm afraid you'll need to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media as you did before. Do you have important files to rescue?

  • After HP support replaced Motherboard, the window 2008 r was running okay after few days I got a Black Screen stating windows is not genuine

After HP replaced the motherboard, and few days later I got a black desktop and windows not genuine afterwards. Any suggestion what I should do. I tried to use Microsoft support website on the server, and it will not let me proceed to any of their site.
The browser display security certification invalid. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried re-activating your copy of Windows? Eg, either using the prompt that appears or going into My Computer properties and checking the activation status at the bottom of the page?
From memory, when you activate a copy of Windows it makes a note of the currently installed hardware (spec, serial numbers etc) so you can't just copy all the files onto another machine and use it there. My guess is that the setup has changed enough for
it to no longer recognise it as the same machine (though I thought it normally takes a few elements changing to trigger that reaction), and so thinks it's no longer genuine. Getting Windows to activate again may work, otherwise you'll probably need to phone
Microsoft to get them to sort it out and allow it to activate again.

  • Windows could not start after SP-3 update

Windows could not start after SP-3 update
After I updated Apple Software Update to 2.1 and then updated to BC 2.1 successfully I D/L & Installed SP-3. Even got the Wizard & seemed to go OK. Got prompt “Installation Complete, Need to restart.” I did. I got a black screen with text:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf
You can attempt to repair the file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at the 1st screen to repair.
I used the power button to shut down Windows & then booted into Mac OS X normally.
I think I need to restart my Mac into Windows (using the Option key ) WHILE THE WINDOWS XP installation CD is in the optical Drive. Then maybe I’ll get a choice to select ‘r’ to repair at the 1st screen?
Has anyone done this with a similar error & successfully repaired their Windows installation? I don’t know if this is a Boot Camp problem or not. XP SP 2 had been working just fine.
    Thanks for any help.

Solved! It apparently was NOT a Boot Camp Issue. The fix was to obtain the file “biosinfo.inf” and from the Mac side, go into my WIndows XP HDD & add that file to: Windows/INF folder. (Yes, it was missing). Why my XP SP2 installation worked fine w/o this file is beyond my knowledge. Perhaps this file is needed only when doing a type of major update yet not needed for simply starting & running Windows? There are web pages stating that upgrading to SP 3 can cause this problem if using 3rd party software such as Norton Anti-Virus (I don’t have that but DO have Zone Alarm). There are also various complicated, long fixes out there. For me, replacing that file did the trick & everything seems fine now. (As far as where one “obtains” that file--long story)

  • "Windows could not start this screen saver"

My timeline playback gets interrupted by Windows' dummy screen saver consisting of a blank screen with the message "Windows could not start this screen saver".  I'm running Premiere CS 5.5 on Windows 7.  I only see this message while Premiere is running so Premiere must be doing something that blocks the current screen saver but doesn't block Windows from attempting to start it.  Is there a way to keep Windows from attempting to start the screen saver at all (other than selecting no screen saver in Windows) so it doesn't interrupt playback?
    Roy

years ago screen savers helped keep crt monitors from getting 'burned in' areas of dead pixels etc from the screen being on a static image for too long. over the years this problem has been almost totally eliminated by monitor manufacturers i think.
i know people who worked in pro graphic houses that never turned off their computers, never used screen savers, and never did power management stuff ... the computers were on 24/7... and they never had problems.. and that was like more than 10 years ago.
i do have a nice snake screen saver that is static and / or animated if you want to try it out, but frankly, i would turn all that stuff off ( power management, screen saver ) and either leave your computer on all the time 24/7, or else just turn it off when you leave the computer... turn it back on when you want to use it.  is only a button on tower to turn on and off usually.. easy.
let me know if you want snakes though... they are very cool and scary !

  • "Windows could not start the offline files service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"

Using Windows 8.1 Pro on Toshiba Satellite i7 Laptop with 8Gb Ram
After upgrade from Windows 8 Pro to 8.1 Pro, the Offline Files/CSC service refuses to start and gives the error message:
"Windows could not start the offline files service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified"
Before the upgrade, offline files worked fine... how do I re-enable offline files?

I had a similar issue -  couldn't make any files available offline.
I found that the offline folder service would not start
This was because the CSC permission were totally screwed.  I had to take ownership of each folder and file, one by one, then grant everyone full access.
then delete the full contents of the CSC folder
format the CSC database using the registry fix then reboot
in control panel, disable the offline files,  reboot, then re-enable.  and now its working :)
2hrs to resolve this, with grateful thanks to this thread and some others.

    Dear Technet,
Windows could not start the Cluster Service on Local computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2.
My cluster suddenly went disappear. and tried to restart the cluster service. When trying to restart service this above mention error comes up.
even i tried to remove the cluster through power-shell still couldn't happen because of cluster service not running.
    Help me please.. thank you.

    Hi,
Could you confirm which account when you start the cluster service? The Cluster service is a service that requires a domain user account.
The server cluster Setup program changes the local security policy for this account by granting a set of user rights to the account. Additionally, this account is made a member
    of the local Administrators group.
If one or more of these user rights are missing, the Cluster service may stop immediately during startup or later, depending on when the Cluster service requires the particular
    user right.
    Hope this helps.

Uninstall your existing copy of iTunes. Delete any copies of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer files from your downloads areas for your web browsers and download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
(The current build of the 11.1.4.62 installer was changed a few days ago, which fixed the bulk of the reports of MSVCR80.dll/R6034/APSDaemon.exe/Error-7/AMDS-could-not-start trouble ... but the build number on the installer was not changed. So we're trying to make sure you do the reinstall using a "new good" 11.1.4.62 installer instead of an "old bad".)
Does the install with the new copy of the installer go through properly? If so, does that clear up the error message?
If you still have the same error messages cropping up, then try the procedures from the following user tip:
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
