Black screen until hard reset

I have had my iPhone 4 for about a month. worked great, have been installing all the updates but now i have to hard reset my phone every time i want to use it.
I have tried restoring a backup, resetting to factory settings etc.
I can see by the forums and many many other places on the internet that this seems to be a common serious issue with the IP4 and other iphones / ipods. too by the looks of it. After being on for a short while the screen goes black (as it would if not used for a few minutes) then clicking the home key or the power button does absolutely nothing. i then have to hard reset the phone by holding both buttons for 10 seconds. im not sure if this problem was caused by one of the updates but the phone is in perfect condition, only a month old. never dropped never got wet etc.
i took the phone into an apple shop and they denied hearing it was a problem and suggested i restored the phone (which i have done)
does anyone else have any other suggestions? I have enjoyed the iphone 4 as it has been the only one good enough to consider getting one but with all these problems i think ill go back to WM or Android becuase at least they dont turn into a brick every few minutes.
please help, or at least confirm this is not just an isssue with my handset

Thanks for your comments. I just wanted to update again.
I did a direct firmware update on the phone (restoring it while its in recovery mode) and did not restore a backup.
this sorted the phone for a few days (and i lost all the data from my apps)
just checked my phone and its now doing the same thing. have to hard reset it to get it usable again.
looks like im going to be phoneless for a while until i get it replaced
dont know what is causing this, i have very few apps on the phone that were the same as before when i last had the issue. very frustrating!

  • Black screen - tried hard reset & cannot install software

So this is awesome... What a crapper.
My screen had started to screw up. Get messed up like a bad TV reception. Then it went all white. Now it's completely black and I can't answer phone calls or anything.
I tried the hard reset. Also tried sticking a paperclip in the hole at the bottom. Tried installing the software (Mac), but it opens up into just a grey screen.
So... besides calling Tech Support and sending my phone off (which I don't know how that'll go, cause I can't find my warranty info), what can I do?

In order to install the software, you will need access to a Windows based PC. The only thing available for Mac's are PocketMac to sync info to a Mac.
If you purchased your phone brand new from your carrier less then a year ago, it should be under warranty still. Call your carrier and ask them howmuch time you have on your warranty.

  • White Screen , Tried Hard Reset / Restore.

I opened my ipod touch but after i put it back i got a white screen and i tried everything from hard reset to restoring the ipod. please help. i never tried draining the battery but i am not sure how to do that with the screen white. Please HELP!!!
BTW i also tried the volume up+home + power button method. after all those reset, restore, methods i always get a black screen. Never a Apple Logo.
    PLEASE HELP !!!

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • IPhone buttons on Microsoft stop working until hard reset

I have a brand new iPhone 5s which shipped with 7.0.4 so I did a fresh install of 7.0.6 (not an update) its not even two weeks old however at times the buttons on the earpods will stop working and I have to do a hard reset to get them to work. I am unplugging and plugging the earpods several times as my Kenwood stereo in my jeep connects via USB for my music and the cord for my ear pods dangling tends to get in the way of my hands when turning the wheel. that's when I notice it stops working sometimes when I plug it back in. I have a life proof case with that screw in waterproof headphone adapter I take in and out of when unplugging as well... the headset and microphone work when plugged in, the buttons will just stop working

Did you try to reset your iPhone? Hold down Power and Home buttons together until Apple logo appears.

  • P7N Diamond Black screen until windows loads

Ok so when I first built this PC I would turn it on and would show all of the usual screens that you would expect and all was good. However a few months ago I got a virus or two and for no apparent reason when I turn on the computer now I get a completely black screen in which the monitor won't even register any sort of output, this only lasts until windows has loaded though and then the login screen pops up. I've been ignoring this until now because I haven't needed to go into the BIOS, but I feel it's time to reformat and I can't change the boot sequence or anything. I've already tried removing the battery to no avail, and I have no idea what else to do.
My setup consists of the p7n780iSLI, q660, 4 gigs of mushkin ram, and a 9800gx2 I'm also running windows XP
I have no reason to believe any of the other hardware is to blame though since everything runs as well as it should after I'm logged in.

I plugged it into the other slot on the video card and it works fine now.
It should work in all slots. Which slot did you have it in before?

  • Apple TV Black Screen Unless I Reset

    Hi,
I've been using a Gen2 apple tv for years and got a Gen3 for my parents for Christmas.  I set it up on their TV and everything worked fine.  After turning it off so I could show my parents how to use it, the light lit up on the front (stayed lit) and there was nothing on the screen.  Unplugging and plugging it in fixed this issue, but it still persists whenever it's turned off or is left idle for a long period of time so it shuts down automatically.  I'm not sure what's causing this, so any suggestions would be helpful.

SImilar situation here with my new Apple TV Gen 3. While it is working perfectly in streaming movies, iTunes, etc., the unit doesn't stay ON when it's idle. I've had to unplug and replug the power cord to get the status light to come back on. Then everything is fine. Seems like a little problem, but it's not exactly an elegant way to access this cutting edge technology. I spoke with an Apple support rep who suggested switching HDMI inputs on my tv (there are three that are unused). I've tried them all, but the same thing happens—after about an hour of not using the Apple TV box, the status light goes off and it is undiscoverable on the assigned HDMI input screen, until I unplug and replug the power.

  • Unresponsive Screen upon hard reset

    Not a webOS question.
I am a Volunteer here, not employed by HP.
You too can become an HP Expert! Details HERE!
If my post has helped you, click the Kudos Thumbs up!
If it solved your issue, Click the "Accept as Solution" button so others can benefit from the question you asked!

This would indicate that you have a faulty digitizer on the device. You can try this solution first before a repair or replacement; remove any screen protectors, take a business card, and take the corner and insert it between the screen and the frame around the screen, drag the card all the way around the screen frame. You are trying to dislodge any debris that could be caught between the frame and the screen. Then reset the device again, and then see if this resolves the target chasing issue. If this does not work you would have to get a repair or replacement on this device.

  • Black Screen w/ no Reset or Power Down Options

I continue to get a black screen on my iPhone 3G 16GB. I will have it sitting on my desk, only to witness the screen go black and will not allow me to unlock or ever reboot. It will simply stay in a black screen for about 20 minutes before kicking on the Apple and booting up on it's own time.
    Here is what I have;
    Full Charge
    Full Reception
    Complete Factory Apps
    No Drops
I took it to AT&T, only to have them scratch their heads and set up an appointment at the Genius Bar. (appt in 25 mins) The funny thing, after trying to reboot, unlock or at least get the screen on it, it was sitting on the counter and on its own decided it was time to boot.
Has anyone had this problem or know what may be causing this?
    Please help.

Phantom is right, I wasn't able to do anything. No Power and Home button pressing is recognized and if it is, it certainly isn't showing it.
The problem is almost as though the proximity sensor thinks you are close to it or on a call. It's quite odd.
I went to the Genius Bar and only got a 'bring it in when it's happening'. Which is to be expected.
Popping out the SIM tricked it? That's a good thing to know, though I hate feeling I have to do that. I might try the system restore to try and get the iTunes installed version of 2.0
Anyone else out there feeling my pain?

  • IPhone 3GS works fine, unless I the screen goes black after no use.  Then I'm stuck on the white screen until I reset the phone.

The title kind of sums it up.  After having my 3GS for over a year without issue, it started acting up today.  I had my phone on my desk at work, and had been checking my e-mail, news, and web intermittently throughout the morning.  I set the phone down, in it's typical spot without issue.  No dropping, no hits, no...nothing.  Just set it on the desk and go about my work.
The next time I pick up the phone to use it, and hit the button, I'm greeted with an all-white screen.  WTH?  If I press and hold the home button the phone makes a "dunk" soud, like maybe I'm enabling the voice feature.  Long story short, I can restart the phone, and reset the phone, and it's fine.
UNTIL the screen goes dark from inactivity.  From that point on, it will ONLY come back in the full-white-screen mode UNTIL I reboot it again, in which case it's again functioning normally...UNTIL the screen goes black from inactivity.  I can hear the phone make text-alert noises as texts come in, my e-mail continues to download regularly, etc.  But it stays stuck in this white screen anytime the battery saver turns the screen black.
    Any ideas on this?

So, I've received and installed a replacement digitizer screen / component.  The good news is that the digitizer works just fine!  Screen swipes, finger tracking, etc are all great.
The bad news...is that it didn't fix my white screen issue.  Same symptoms...everything works fine at boot.  As long as I keep the screen from going dark, everything continues to work fine (rapidly consuming battery, of course).  If, at any time, the screen goes dark (get a call, accidentally press the top button to shut down the screen, etc), the screen will only come back on as a white screen.
All touch components are working fine at this time.  I've grown to remember where the "power down" swipe is located, so I press and hold the power down button, then swipe where I know the "power down" swipe is located.  Phone will shut down.
Restart the phone, and repeat the process.  Anyone have any other ideas?

  • My Macbook starts up but with a black screen until I shift key and reboot it a few times

    Hi
I am not very technically at all, I am posting this because I haven't been able to get an appointment with apple for weeks.
I mac book is around 3/4  years old, hardly used, its 17inch and all the software is up to date.
in the last week every time i turn on my laptop the screen goes to black and I have to hit shift and the power button a few times before it works. Once it is on it works perfect. i have never dropped the laptop.
What is wrong and how do i stop this?
thank you for your help and time.

    You are welcome!
Sometimes resetting the SMC "fixes" odd problems. Glad I could help.

  • My iphone has a black screen and the reset won't work. What else can I do?

Today my phone screen went completely dark and all I could see were some faint vertical lines. It's on as it's still receiving messages but I can't access or see anything.
Based on other similar questions, the answer seems to be to hold the on/off and home buttons together until something shows but nothing has happened after a few attempts of holding it for a while. Do I have any other options or do I need to go into a store?
    Thanks
