Black screen upon waking

Twice now since installing 10.5 my Mac has woke up with a black screen, forcing me to hold the button down and attempt rebooting several times. Is this a known problem?

I can confirm the same problem here on a PowerPC Dual G5 with 2 Apple Cinema 23" monitors on both Tiger (10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5.5). The secondary monitor is blacked out upon waking from sleep and/or reboot, yet it appears in the Displays Preference Pane. Mirroring the displays or changing its resolution does not help.
Now, when I plug and replug the monitor's DVI, I get this in the console...
Sep 29 10:51:41 XXXXXX kernel[0]: USBF: 198.392 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 2 of Hub at 0x4b300000 reported error 0xe00002c0 while doing getting port status (2)
So, apparently it's a USB issue. Did a quick search on this forum, but I havn't found out a solution yet.
Any clues!?

  • Black screen upon waking Mac

    Mac Mini 2011 with 2x4GB RAM, 2.3Ghz i5, 500GB 5400RPM HDD
So I need some help regarding my Mac and it's driving me mad! Its a bit tempermental and it isnt always the same occurance each time, but basically symptons are (somtimes it occurs, sometimes not with each one!):
Turning on It will freeze on white screen (no logo)
upon waking up from sleep it will display black screen with mouse and notifications. no login UI or wallpaper. Can SOMETIMES login if i just type password (as if login screen is still there). mouse dissapears once typing begins
Sometimes when the previous event occurs (^) and i put computer to sleep it will then do the opposite and display just the wallpaper with no input from mouse, keyboard
I have tried removing all devices (webcam, USB mouse etc) and turning on computer but as its tempermental
I have also reinstalled a new OS X over the top from internet recovery
Also reformated HDD and restored OS X.
    Also reset SMC and NVRAM.
    Also checked in

    /System/Library/StartupItems - nothing either
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons - Loads of files in this folder

Also run the AHT extended test, no issues detected.
Also set "sudo pmset autopoweroff 0" and "sudo pmset standby 0" in Kernal.
Also repaired disk permissions, it only repaired the printer stuff.
After i gave this in kernal, i then reset SMC again to check.
Checked console and noticed a 40 second gap before this error:   "05/02/2014 07:03:00.266 configd[55]: inet_set_autoaddr(en1, 1) failed, Resource busy"
turned off my WiFi and issues still persisted.
This had previously been on forums last week in Mac Mini section with the help of 'BDAqua' however im out of options and need some more help. If anyone could be helpful enough to give some suggestions on why my screen is black upon waking up (exc. notifications. they appear) and most time i need to hard reboot (sometimes i can type in password and it unlocks).
I can not afford to start fresh, i have a 110GB iTunes Library with 210 iOS apps and photos too important to me to be forgotten.
    PLEASE HELP ME

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Black screen upon waking from sleep

    Hello,
I have an intermittent problem with waking my entry-level MBP from sleep; on some occasions, the screen remains black instead of the system waking up and displaying the Finder.
Recently, upon waking from sleep, the authentication dialog displayed, I typed my password and pressed return, the dialog dismissed, the screen remained black, and the wait cursor displayed without spinning.
To recover, I needed to force power down and cold reboot.
system.log (in Console) contained the following entry at the time of the crash.
    Aug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify ErrorAug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error
The entries surrounding the one above were as follows (the next to last one evidently was the final entry before the forced power down).
    Aug 14 07:39:47 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep

Can someone diagnose the problem based upon the above Console entries?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Thanks for taking time to post.
My question is different than the one your posting answers.
My question is, what is the diagnosis of the problem based upon the Console log entries that I've posted (rather than "How do I recover from the black screen?")?
    Cheers!

  • IOS app rejected due to a blank, black screen upon launch

I recently got my iPhone app rejected and the reason is below:
"We found that your app exhibited one or more bugs, when reviewed on iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.3, on both Wi-Fi and cellular networks, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.
Specifically, the app displayed a blank, black screen upon launch. Please see the attached screenshot/s for more information.
    The steps to reproduce are:
    1. Launch app
    2. Bug encountered"
I use FlashDevelop and the latest Apache Flex + Air SDK 3.7 + swfversion=20. I don't have an iPhone 5 to test on but I've tested the application on a 3GS, iPod touch (4th gen.) on IOS 4.3, 5.1 and 6.1.3 (latest) and the application works on all of them.
The attached screenshot mentioned above is here:
the "blank" screen is actually a deep blue one, which the color I've set to my project's background.
I didn't make any special modifications in the code to support iPhone 5 to be honest, and the project dimensions were set to 640x960, but I did include the [email protected], and it shows inside the .ipa at Payload/Myapp.app/
In almost all the iPhone 5 discussions I've read online, theat launch problem is due to the [email protected] not being there in the root of the release .ipa, but I'm sure it does exist on my ipa. Also, I have request high resolution set to high, and the Info.plist has the correct DTPlatformVersion (6.0) and DTSDKName (iphoneos6.0).
Any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks.

Remember - they gave you a very specific device and version. It might be working on all other configurations. So if you are unable to get your hands on that device and version you are going to be left stabbing in the dark as to what is going wrong.
My advice would just be to figure out what's different with that device and make sure everything is configured properly.
Another option - if you don't want this app on the iPad anyway - is to remove it from the configuration:
    <key>UIDeviceFamily</key>
    <array>
              <string>1</string>
              <string>2</string>
    </array>
You would delete the <string>2</string> part.

  • Black screen upon wakeup after longer sleep...

In the last 2 months or so, I have seen my MacMini 2011 OSX 10.7.3 crashing withing a minute of wakeup, after sleeps of more than 2-3 hours.
Sometimes the Black screen occurs almost immediately, sometimes it takes up to a minute after the desktop appears (after logging in).
This did not occur until I got 10.7.3 and only within the last 2 months.

    Anyone?
I am up to 100 crashes upon wakeup now. Various versions of Lion 10.7.x. I have done clean installs as well.
Does anyone else get the black screen of death shortly after wakeup from sleep?
This never happened on 10.7.0, 10.7.1 or 10.7.2
Crashes happen in both 10.7.3 and now 10.7.4, and for sleeps as short as 90 minutes.

  • Frequent hanging, black screen on waking, beach balling

    Hi there
I've been having tons of issues with my MBP hanging on waking, especially if TM was busy, but frequent beach balling during the day for no apparent reason.
There was a lot of talk of faulty logic boards, and my heart sank. I was on the verge of getting rid of my computer.. then I read that Sophos may play a role. It seems that Sophos and TM compete for the exernal drive for backing up causing hanging and black screens.. I just wanted to put on record for others who may have a similar issue, uninstalling Sophos has returned my MBP to trouble free computing, and great performance again. If you have Sophos and the symptoms listed, try going without - I wish I'd tried it sooner!
Cheers and good luck - Francois

Humm... May have something to do with the straight HDMI connection, others have also complained about similar problems using a straight HDMI connection.
    1. You tried a different HDMI cable...? (you didn't say)
    2. What model is your Acer and what other inputs (DVI, VGA, etc.) does it support...?
I run dual DVI Samsung monitors on my Mac Mini and have not experience any problems. One is on the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI adapter and the other in on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
No a power outage does not equal an SMC reset. If fact, it can have just the opposite effect and throw the System Management Controller off kilter.

  • Macbook Air (mid-2013) Black Screen Upon Opening Screen

    Hi Everyone,
I have a mid-2013 Macbook Air (bought in August)  that I updated to OS X 10.9 a few weeks ago.  Recently I've been noticing that when I flip the screen up it'll work fine, but if I do so consecutively for two times (ie. opening it once, closing it, then opening it again), the screen goes black (sometimes a half-black that's still lit up, othertimes it's completely black as if it were off).  This also happens when I put it in sleep mode by pressing the power button once.  If I do it twice, the black screen appears as well.  Nothing I press on the keyboard will cause the screen to come back on.  The only thing I can do is to force it shut down and then reboot.  I reset the SMC and PRAM and neither has helped. Apple told me that I need to take it into a store but I have several essays due in the next week and finals after that.  I can't be without a laptop so I can't send it in for repair until at least mid-December.  I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue (since other people have posted about this as well) and it'll be solved by an update.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Beach ball on black screen when waking Mini from sleep

I am looking for a way to fix this frequent problem. About 25% of the time I wake this 2-year-old Mac Mini from sleep, it will show a spinning beach ball or a regular pointer on a totally black screen. The monitor connected is an Acer, by the way, and it's had multiple color calibrations done to it... Anyways, the pointer or beach ball doesn't go away if you just let it sit awhile, but it does move with mouse motion. So the only ways of getting to the login screen from there are:
hold down the power button on the computer for 10 seconds, then start it up as usual.
unplug the HDMI cord that connects to the display from the back of the computer.
    What does not work:
unplug the HDMI from the back of the display
turn the monitor off and on
    unplug and replug the monitor
pressing keyboard shortcuts to shutdown, reboot, sleep, etc. don't work.
So from this I've deduced that it has something to do with the Mac Mini recognizing the Acer display and having to refresh that port's connection.
What I've already tried that has not permanently fixed the problem:
    Reset the PRAM
Having frequent power outages counts as resetting the SMC, right?
    restarting the computer (duh)
    Doing the Apple Diagnostic test
Had Disk Utility test the hard drive (well ok its an ssd) and found no problems with it.
Help! It's not so much a problem for me but one other person who uses this computer is computer illiterate and cannot do a hard reset or figure out which cable goes where. And please, please, please do not take the easy way out and tell me to reinstall OSX (it's mavericks by the way). Thank you very much.

  • Why a black screen upon exiting Reader 9?

I can open PDF files, read them, and prnt them. I am using Firefox as my browser. When I close the PDF screen, I get a black screen. I would think that the PDF reader should close and return me to the screen from whence I opened the PDF. I have to click my BACK arrow to remove the black screen. This is a PAIN in the BUTT. What do I need to do to repair this?

    Hi, That sucks,
While waiting for your reply, I did a lot of searching online and a couple of really skilled computer people put it down to two Microsoft updates, I'll find the numbers and post them here.
Beside that here is something that might actually work:
    Find a computer person,
Have them remove the hard drive,
Use some computer wires or docking station to turn the hard drive into a huge USB
Plug the docking (and hard drive) station it into another computer
Open a dos window access the hard drive and delete those updates,
Take the hard drive and put it back into the computer to see if it works.
    IF
That doesn't work, - deleting the MS updates,
Then copy over the important files from the hard drive to the computer
and then use the Dos window or Windows explorer to reformat the hard drive.
Put the hard drive back into the computer, and use the win 7 disks to re-install, or try Linux Mint the free Operating system that has no MS hassles.
This is what I am going to try,
Will let you know how it goes, it might be a couple of days.

  • Black Screen upon login

After booting up arch I log in and 3/4 of my screen is black with 1/4 of the screen at the top left visible. I am currently using 64 bit arch, and I tried resting all nvidia configurations but that didin't fix the problem. Also the rest of screen seems to be active, however just not visible.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thank you in advance.

Probably nvidia since it is stated in the post.
There seem to be a number of these black screen issues.  Have you tried a forum search?  I'm sorry but I don't know a solution myself.

  • Blank/Black screen after waking up from sleep mode

    Hi there,
So this is my first time using a macbook. I purchased a macbook pro with retina display in August of this year. I have never had this problem but after i have updated to the new Yosemite OS, my problem keeps happening. I will be using my computer to work on assignments. After, ill put my mac to sleep and close the lid screen. When i come back and turn it on, it shows a bank/black screen. The keyboard lights up but nothing shows on the screen. So i end up close my mac and reopening it again and it still is blank screen. After a few tries opening and closing, i type my login password even when the screen is black. After, i close it again and reopen it and now my screen shows my background and login information. I enter the password and it works fine. I'm not sure if this a problem that needs to be looked at? I have taken care of my computer since day 1 so im not sure why this problem is happening. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Hi ellaine,
Lets check your energy saver settings:
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2412
Regarding your second question, it may be that your display is set to sleep before the screen saver starts. That would cause the screen saver to never display.
    Thanks,

    Hi LenBlazer,
I did and they seem fine.
I contacted Lenovo customer service this afternoon and they have advised me to send my machine to them. They also mentioned that they have recently been receiving same complain from other users as well and this seems to be caused by recent windows upgrades.
I agree that the next thing that you should do is to send the unit to Lenovo for repair. Just be sure that you have backup all your files and data since Lenovo might restore the drive to factory condition. Use one Key recovery and chose a location that can accomodate the backup image files.

  • Black screen upon wake from sleep when I change power state while in sleep

    Hi,
I'm having this problem where my MacbookPro won't always wake from sleep.
OSX is 10.6.3 and fully updated.
I've done a lot of troubleshooting, and I can now replicate the issue 100%:
1 - Put the MacbookPro to sleep by closing lid
2 - Change power source (from plugged-in to battery or vice versa)
3 - open lid - MacbookPro will wake, but stays at black screen and is unresponsive.
Only if I change power state while sleeping will this issue show. Anyone else experincing this issue, and anygot got a clue on what to do?
    regards,
    Lasse

I've seen the same issue after upgrading to 10.6.3. I have a one year old MacBook Pro. I would have the screen be black after coming back from sleep or hibernate (tried both).
The workaround I found is to close the lid -almost- all the way and then immediately open it back up again, like I am catching the Mac going back to sleep and then changing my mind. For whatever reason, this has been reliably solving my issue for the last couple weeks reliably.
Only other oddity I noticed is that immediately after upgrading OS X told me that my one year old battery needed to go in for servicing...
Anyway, now all looks right with the world assuming you don't mind a quick close/open cycle.. Lovely...

  • New Macbook Pro (with Retina) black screen after waking up

    Hello,
I bought a new 2015 Macbook pro (13" with Retina) a couple of weeks ago and noticed one thing that concerns me.
When the Macbook either boots up or wakes up from sleep mode it stays on a completely black screen for about 30-45 seconds.
I find myself sweating it out to see if the screen will actually come on. So far the screen always (eventually) comes on and the Macbook works as expected.
Do you think this is a problem with the Macbook? If so, I'd like to return it for anew before the month is up.
If this is a software issue, how can I fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Set the default startup disk.
    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Reset the PRAM.
    5. Reset the printing system.

  • Aspire e15 black screen upon booting

I booted up my Aspire e15 and the computer turned on, showed the Acer loading screen, then went black with the LED backlight still on. The mouse remained on the screen and could be moved around but I can't get past this back screen. Is there a solution to this other than reinstalling Windows 8? And if I do have to reinstall windows 8, is there a way to salvage the files on my hard disk? Thank you.

you have received the BSOD,, black screen of death.. but it may not be dead.. do you know if you received a software update recently?  Shut down your system completely.. unplug the power source if plugged in and remove the battery.. hit your start button a few times to clear static.. than plug your power soucre back in.. and place your battery into place and lock it..restart your system...If you receive the black screen again.. shut back down and wait a few minutes.. and restart in in safe mode.. If you are not sure how to start in safe mode.. I will be happy to walk you thru it... when you are able to get into the system.. you will want to look to see what caused the crash ... I can give you a few items of what to look for if you need.. Hope this helps you ...
