Black screen when trying to boot into Windows 7

Hello everyone.
Today we've encountered an issue with one of our MacBook Pros with Windows 7 installed. The computer was booted into Windows 7 (it's strictly used as a Windows machine by this particular user) and after a time of inactivity it went to sleep. It wouldn't wake up from it's sleep so we tried a hard boot. At that point we would get the grey screen, the Apple tone wouldn't sound off and it would just go to a black screen (by default we have it booting to windows). So then we reset the PRAM. Now, we get the apple tone and we can boot into the Mac side. But when we try and boot into Windows, we get a blank screen.
What's even more interesting, if I try and boot into a Windows install disk to do a boot repair, it gives me a black screen. If I even try to boot from a live Linux cd, I get a blank screen! When important thing I then noticed was that the cd spinned for a couple minutes, then stopped. So I began to wonder if it was still loading the OS like expected, but just wasn't displaying it.
So I booted into Windows, got the blank black screen. Then I went into another computer, fired up remote desktop and voila! I'm in the machine!
So the problem is this: When booting into ANYTHING other than OS X, the display turns off.
What can we do?

Hello there,
I have a similar problem! Windows 7 shutdown unexpectedly and since that I can not reboot in windows anymore only with safe mode where everything is a mess.
Also when it's trying to reboot in windows a blue window appears, says something about drivers  and it is counting something (79.78...till100)but  I m not able to read it cause it disappears immidiately and then black screen and then it turns to reboot in mac which works fine.
I m sorry if I confused you with my english...
If anyone knows please help!
Thanks

  • Black screen when trying to boot to CD (using Option or C) on startup

Hi, everyone. I'm working on a Mac Mini (mid-2011 vintage) with an attached Superdrive (recently purchased). My monitor is an older VGA monitor linked up to the mini using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter (plugged into the Thunderbolt port). Video runs fine, but when I try to boot to CD to try to reinstall OS, and either hold the Option key or hold C when I hear the chime, I never get any video. The screen is completely black. The moment I release Option or C, I get the usual logon screen. So I never get a screen with selection of boot devices and the mini never boots directly to CD. I'm not sure where to proceed with this and don't really want to go out and purchase a Thunderbolt monitor just to see if that would work. Anyone have any ideas that I could pursue? Thanks.

Thanks for responding. I'm actually trying to set up the Mac mii as my VMware ESXi 5 server (per Paraguin software guide, see http://paraguin.com/2012/01/10/the-mac-mini-vmware-esxi-5-server-part-2-installa tion/
Nobody following their procedures and posting on their site has had any (reported) video issues, but that was my guess, that somehow video drivers are not being loaded.
BTW, did you mean "hold the option key" at bootup cause my mac keyboard doesn't have an alt key?
Thanks. Still looking for other options.

  • Is it possible to bypass the number of partitions limitation (no more than 2) when trying to boot into windows by not using boot camp assistant, and instead just partitioning the drive manually?

I can't find a specific answer to this question.
I did have a functioning Windows 8 installation on my MacBook Pro previously. I tried to make a third exFAT partition so as to have a drive mutually readable/writable to both operating systems. This made it so I could no longer boot into my Windows installation.
I know I'll need the boot camp drivers installed on the Windows installation after the fact, but would manually creating a partition and installing the OS without Boot Camp Assistant work? And would I be able to boot from it while having a total of 3 partitions?

    That's the spirit!
Just be sure to have your OS X junk safe in a tested backup, in case the whole thing craps out and you end up having to do a low-level partition and erase of the entire drive.
And like I said, the problem is not OS X. I've set up mine at least once with 4 partitions holding as many flavors of OS X as can run on the hardware, all perfectly bootable on demand.

  • Trying to boot into Windows with no Windows Partition

So I tried Windows XP on boot camp and ofcourse it says it's not installed when it clearly is >_>
So I restored and when I boot up it tries to boot into windows, when it loads it says Disk Error insert boot disk. When I hold alt it only shows Macinstosh HD.
I've just re-partitioned and restored to Mac full partition again so I need to reboot and see if that works...

The last line in your post says "I've just re-partitioned and restored to Mac full partition again so I need to reboot and see if that works"
Rebooting should take you to OSX provided you removed the BC partition correctly (using Boot Camp Assistant)
I am not sure what you mean by the rest of the post "So I restored" restored what?
It sounds as though XP was either not installed or not installed correctly, what happens now when you reboot?

Did it twice and it still gives me a black screen when going into a full screen on games.

  • Has anyone encountered an "exclamation  point" in a white circle centered on a black screen when trying to edit a photo?

Has anyone encountered an "exclamation point symbol" in a gray circle surrounded by a black screen when editing in iphoto?

    Yes.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Black Screen when trying to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp

Have seen many similar questions with not one solid answer.  I have a brand new 17" MacBook Pro with the regular 750 gig grive and a 200 something gig ssd primary drive. Running the latest version of OS X of course.
Updated all of my software and then opened up Bootcamp and partitioed 40 gigs on the SSD drive for Windows 7. Stuck in the disc when it asked me to and clicked continue. It rebooted then immediately went to a black screen and tahts where it stays. I ahve tried both the 64bit and 32bit discs and it does the same no matter which one I use.
How do I get windows 7 to install properly?
Just my luck it says Apple doesnt offer phone support for installing Windows via Bootcamp.

Try using Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows volume, then redo it.
Waste of time and don't need to - there are Apple tech support articles
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
There is/was one directed at the iMac w/ black screen.
Using an electronic version, an ISO, bought through school, burned wtih Apple Disk Utility - that has to be burned at slowest reduced burn speed 2X to work - won 't boot, installs but fails during or after, various issues. But you seem to have both, therefore retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium.
Is OS X also on the SSD? 40GB is actually a tight fit for Windows 7 64-bit. I could tell you why but just trust me when you add up page, hibernation, the SP1 update temp space requirment all on top of the 20GB for Windows itself. And then any data, applications, cache files.
    I'd disconnect the 750GB drive.
    There were updates last week.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/
    "Solid answers" - really?
    A. there is a forum for Boot Camp
    Boot Camp
    Another for MacBook Pro
    MacBook Pro
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro
And this one? is for workstations (tower) Mac Pro.
I know some tech articles say Apple only supports installing or using BCA and any issue with Windows is not under their support, though even there the Apple Boot Camp driver support have various issues and more trouble than I would expect or accept to claim "Windows on Mac" can be called supported - it isn't as seamless and of course no hand-holding.
There is one step, feature added to 10.6.6 to "download" and save drivers to CD or flash memory - that has been broken and DOA (MacBook Air does need USB DVD external driver and that works) but having a full Boot Camp 3.2 on a memory stick and not having to go through 3.0 and 3.1 to get to the current supported version of 3.2? that doesn't work at all. - Which has led to 100x posts over "what do I do?" with it in the broken state it is in.
This is an Apple SSD, or 3rd party? The 2011 MacBook Pro has had trouble as it should suppport SATA3 and that was what one of the firmware updates addressed.  Performance and lack or presence of TRIM in OS X is another area of concern.

  • Windows 7 64 Bit black Screen when trying to got back to desktop

    Hello,
just bought my a new Imac and isntalled Windows 7 64 bit without any problems.
When running a game under windows and i try to go back to the desktop with ALT+TAB or the windows key the screen gets black.I can still hear the game sound but i am not able to go back to the desktop or back to the game. The only solution is to hardboot (power on/off) the whole system. It has to be something with the 4850 HD drivers i think, i tried already to update them from the ATI homepage, no changes.
Has anybody else experienced the same problem?
    Kind regards
    redsun100

I recently had a problem that was similar but with OSX 10.6. It may be a long shot, but have you considered that the BIOS in the Apple Mac may be the problem?
Windows / Mac / Linux, etc... all require a series of components to unanimously agree that everything is fine and funky. If one does not, then, dependant on the problem it can either Freeze, crash or cause instability problems. At the core of any OS is its link to the base hardware, which is to all intents and purposes the BIOS.
So coming back to the problem, when I upgraded my white Macbook (4,1 version) to 10.6, I wanted to find out if it would work with the 64bit kernel of Snow Leopard. To the best of my knowledge the machine has a 32bit EFI firmware. Initially it was all bunnies and flowers in Mac-land and everything was happy with the 64bit kernel. However, this is the 'But' that usually surfaces, this was all well and good till it went to sleep. When I tried to wake the machine, things happened but it failed to reinitialize the video hardware, so a black screen and an even more puzzled look on my face. A hard reboot would solve the problem, but repeating the sleep function and putting the machine to sleep, repeated the video initialisation problem and I was cold rebooting again. Before you all come out of the wood work and say that this machine is not authorised by Apple to run 10.6 as a 64bit version, I know and did it as a test, by hacking two files in the system - It works, just don't let it sleep on you or you'll be pulling the plug. My needs for a 64bit OS are due to Adobe Lightroom and its memory problems under 32bit, which seem to be largely neutralised with the 64bit kernel. As a small side note, my newer 13.3" MacBook is all bunnies and flowers in Mac-land, even coming out of sleep mode.
Now it suggests that in the dreaded Black Screen of Death, that seems to be popping up with an alarming regularity, may have more to do with the BIOS in machines not properly sorting the peripherals and components on the PCI and PCIe buses when something radical happens. As you know, Windows Vista did some real funky stuff when switching video modes or jumping between one full screen program and the desktop. Just remember Vista did some strange video funkiness when bringing the UAC to your attention. It reminded me of the weird stuff ATI did with their 9800XT & Pro video cards when windows first started, Black screen and then reinitialise.
In your example, I believe that Direct X 10 needs to switch from the game or application to the Desktop UI. As normal windows applications are not full screen they work within the framework of the Direct X 10 and UI, but when you deal with full screen that's a different matter.
For years we have all been 32bit and happy, but then the switch to 64 bit hit the shelves and all of a sudden things ain't so good. After all the PC BIOS scene is not exactly standard fair, and in most cases the versions that float around on the Internet are all different.
I would suggest (If you can get a copy) you try to see if you can get a 32bit version of Windows 7 and see what happens - although some of the draconian measures that Microsoft go to lock you in can be frustrating, so my apologies if this is not possible. Also have you checked that the Mac has a 64bit EFI BIOS and that it is able to support this type of OS. If it does have 64bit BIOS it is generally Apple who chained their OS by restricting certain machines with capable BIOS, not the actual Hardware that is the problem. So if you have a 64bit capable BIOS then I can only think you need to check for an update or something.
The other problem is that everything Apple, but the Mac Pro, is tightly controlled by Apple. On the Mac Pro, it is feasibly possible to change some of the components in the system, all other machines are fixed. Take for instance the Video BIOS, can you find any updates or files - unless Apple deign to release it we have to suck it. After all they are in the business of supporting their machines and OS combinations, not the other Operating systems out there.
Anyway just my ten pence worth. Hope it helps.
