When turned on, it stays at a black screen. Caps lock key light flashes, and Wi-Fi amber light is on. That's about it. I took off the battery for 15 minutes then tried again, nothing.

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.

Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity. A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less. Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

Ideally you need to boot from the disk as you have no other media advisable. (e.g your hard drive)
Without some form of system disk or restore you wont be able to diagnose the problem with your hard drive.
By using a Mac OS X system disk you can load up the Disk Utilities and repair the hard drive if shown it's available. If it's not available you would need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Without any disk to support you, you are going to struggle.
You can obtain replacement disk, both retail copies or system disk on the Internet.
If you know what version of Mac OS X you had install (I'm guessing that it would have been 10.3, but would recommend 10.4) A retail disk is normally black with a colored 'X' on it, while system disk are always.
Always try and obtain a copy of the system restore disks (Gray) for your iBook
Ebay is another outlet that has genuine system disk for sell, but like any auction site, it's as and when someone is selling them.
The only other thing you could do is take it to a Apple repair agent who could check the hard drive on your behalf. That way you can get confirmation if the problem is the drive or some other fault. They may even help restore the OS for you.
I can't think of anything else to try without some form of disk to help you.
There maybe just one other small thing you could try.
When booting up, firmly rest your palm of your hand on the iBook next to the tracker pad on the left side.
If it works then it's another fault that I'm aware of.

There are four general causes of this issue:
1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

I would be concerned too if my iPod nano's was just showing a white screen. I recommend following the steps below:
Display shows a white screen
Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
Reset the device (Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Home buttons simultaneously until the display shows the Apple logo. This should take about eight seconds).
When the Apple logo appears, press and hold the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk Mode.
While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.

Press the power button down to force a emergency hardware shutdown and hold the option/alt key down and reboot
If you see your OS X boot partition, then click it and the arrow, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and reset it. Done.

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.

Any suggestions?

I had the "White Screen of Minor Injury" happen to my 3rd Gen nano a couple years ago, and nothing I tried worked either. In the end I had to send it to the Apple store and they ended up replacing it.

- Try on another computer

Hi, when I turn on my MacBook Pro, I hear the click of the drive whirring and about to start but nothing happens...the screen remains black. The light on the catch is on and the power light is also on but still, the screen remains black. I've tried removing all leads from sound cards etc and turning it back on but no joy. I've tried pressing the power button plus shift as well as the command + shift + P + R but again, nada. Having read some forums, I'm wondering if this may be a graphics card problem and that it needs to be replaced. Hopefully this is a quick fix as I'm making a record at the moment (fortunately, I've got everything saved via time machine...). Anyway, if someone can help, I'd very much appreciate it. I had the same issue with my 2008 iMac and Apple support walked me through a fix ...
1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).
Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.
If this doesn't help then try reinstalling whatever version of OS X you are using.

I am new at this so some of my terminology may be off. I have a server, when I turned it on tonight I had a white screen with the little thing in the center going around. Before it could do anything the computer just quite. Went black. I tried 5 or 6 more times with the same thing happening. Isn't their a a command I can use while the screen is white to have it start in safe mode and I can switch drives.

If you have another bootable drive, you may be able to boot from it by holding down the option key at the startup chime — if you hear the chime. If you don't hear it, the machine is failing the power-on self test and needs to be serviced.
