Black screen with 7950GT digital connection

Hello to all in the forum.
Sorry my first post is to ask for help  :(
My PC spec
A8N32-Sli Deluxe motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor
2GB Ram
Windows XP Pro service pack 3 and all updates.
MSI 7950GT Grapics card
I have MSI 7950GT for 3 yrs and it as never given me any cause to regret it's purchase.
About 4 days ago I suddenly got a black screen. I did a restart and after the XP splash screen the screen again went black.
I knew Windows had started because I heard the Windows welcome music. But could see nothing.
I then started the PC in safe mode and could now see the desktop. I checked in Event Viewer and could see no error that suggested any graphics problems
So thinking it to be a driver problem I un-installed the  186.18_desktop_winxp_32bit_english_whql nvidia drivers.
I then restarted windows and could now see the desktop which seem to confirm my beliefs it was a driver problem.
I then download and installed the latest 190.38_desktop_winxp_32bit_internationa l_whql nvidia drives from Nvidia.
Again on restart the screen went black after the XP splash screen although again I could hear the Windows welcome music.
I then (after closing the PC down) removed the DVI monitor lead and and coupled VGA lead from my LG L226W monitor.
I restarted the PC and could now see my desktop.
I normally have my VGA monitor lead coupled to an Older PC on which I run Linux Madriva and can switch between windows and linux using
the source button on my Monitor.
So I coupled MY DVI lead to the Linux PC and this worked OK. Which seems to confirm the Monitor DVI is not the problem.
Another thing I've noticed is that even though my windows PC runs OK on the VGA side of my monitor if I just click on the Nvidia display setting
in the Windows Notification Area the screen goes momentarily black.
You would expect this to happen if you changed settings but not by just selecting the menu.
Does anyone have any Idea why? I cannot run my PC on the DVI side of my Monitor
Thanks in advance for any replies that can point me in the direction to slove the problem
0James

Is it OK with the original drivers that came on the CD or downloaded from MSI? Newest drivers are not always the best for older hardware. I would suggest trying the older drivers and then leave it at that.
Try drivers from here (select your card model and then download the driver): http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodarchive&maincat_no=130

I have had a 3GS for 2+ years.  After upgrading to IOS 4 (now 4.3.5) I began having problems.  In the past week, my screen went to the itunes logo and USB cable twice -- unprovoked -- just found it sitting there like that!  I connected to itunes and it did restore from a backup but it is a major inconvenience.  I am also searching for answers, but better back-up regularly!

Update: my PC USB hub was connected to a USB 3 port, I connected the 30 pin cable directly to my PC, And the restore worked just fine. Restored phone from iCloud backup and seems to be working fine.

Sammyhunter lets get you back in action! Has there been any physical/water damage to the device? Try pressing and holding the home and power button together. Once the Apple symbol appears release both buttons. Keep us posted!

I have given my hiusband Apple TV for Christmas. We have just connected it and are just seeing a black screen with HDM1 &  Player1(BD SYSTEM) at the top of the screen. Next step is to go onto Settings but I can't seem to get this to work. The screen won't respond to the Apple TV remote. I did pair it to the TV by pressing menu and Right for 6 seconds but nothing happening.
We are in a rural area with Satellite Broadband......not sure if this makes a difference.

You may have a faulty USB cable. Try another.
Make sure you are following the instructions in this procedure to the letter. Here they are, with emphasis on some easily overlooked requirements:
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector) release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
Use iTunes to restore the iPhone.
If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Select the device in iTunes and choose "restore from backup".
If you still can't get it to work, you have done all you can and only Apple will be able to help.

It has been on this black screen with the apple logo and some small white writing at the top of the screen for many hours. I've tried rebooting it and connecting to iTunes but nothing has worked.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

It likely means there was still water inside it and something has now shorted out and permanently damaged one or more components.  THE very worst thing you can do with wet electronics is energize them - even a small drop of water inside on any of the circuitry or electrical contacts can cause catastrophic damage.
Take it to Apple for a free evaluation, but most likely you will need to replace it.  For the out of warranty fee ($269.00 USD) you will get a refurbished replacement (like new, with a factory new screen and battery).  An out of warranty replacement will also re-instate your remaining warranty, or 90 days warranty, whichever is longer.

  • Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor

    Hi
First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something
    Here are some files
xorg.conf (i know there are some bullshit things in it, but it was workig )

I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Gnome Black Screen with Mouse Cursor after Login

I am using Archlinux 64bit with a Gnome Desktop Environment. Everything was running normally uptill today. When i ran "sudo fc-cache", my system froze. I couldnt open any other app but i was able to access terminal. I restarted using "reboot" command. After that I was unable to log in to my desktop.
The Gnome login screen comes and after entering the correct username and password, all I can see is a black screen with mouse cursor. I then started gnome manually with "startx" and it worked. But still I am unable to use normally (that is the graphical login). I reinstalled gdm but it didnt work. Please help me out.

there are a lot of processess running... dunno killing which process will not cause a problem
here is the xorg log  ( sorry i dont have much knowlegde to analyse it )

  • Sometimes when I open my laptop back from sleep, I get a black screen with the cursor showing.

Recently I've been getting this weird problem where my macbook air will show a black screen with only the cursor visible that I can move around but nothing else can be done to get to the desktop. The only way is to close the lid and wait for around 10 or more seconds and then open the lid again to bring the laptop back from sleep and hope that the laptop goes to the lock screen and then to the desktop. This works often but sometimes the only solution seems to be to restart the laptop. This also happens when I tilt the lid to the point where it is almost closed and when I tilt it back the screen presents the above state. Theis has been happening often now and it is almost impossible for the above not to happen atleast 2 to 3 times a day. iThis is a relatively new problem that has been occuring since the past two weeks or so and never happened to me on my Macbook Pro 15 2011. My current system is a Macbook Air 11" 2013 Haswell 1.3 Ghz 4GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Now I dont want to have to send in my laptop if I dont have to if there is a way I can solve this myself. Anybody else have this problem?

    Hello tseten,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air was not waking from sleep appropriately.  For an issue like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I repaired a cracked iphone 5c screen now I have a black screen with a vertical blue line on the left hand side of the screen. please help!!

    Hi all,
Please help, I repaired an iphone 5c and have now tried two different lcd screens on it but all I get is a black screen or a black screen with a vertical blue line on the left hand side of the screen. I definitely have the cables connected properly etc and before I repaired it the phone had a cracked screen and there was a picture on it.
I have tried hard reset and nothing. I have tried connecting to iTunes but it asks me to confirm on the iPhone which I can't do as there is nothing on the display.  I have tried randomly pressing all over the screen but it doesn't work. So I can't even try restoring it on iTunes.
Please help any advice will be appreciated! I successfully have repaired iphone 4's and iphone 5 before but this is the first iphone 5c.
    Thanks.

Since you were successful the last two times, I'm sure you will figure it out.

  • TS1363 while updating my IOS to IOS 6 the updating process couldn't be completed for unknown reason and my iphone has nothing but a black screen with an apple and a meter that shows no progess. it completely froze!

When updating my IOS 5.1.1 to IOS 6 and after the download completed the updating of the iphone couldn't be completed for unknown error and the device froze and all i have now is a black screen with an apple and a meter that shows no progress I can't switch off my iphone or do anything!!!

    Hi,
I had a similar problem last week with my nice shiny 3 week old iPhone 6. I noticed the Apple logo was on the screen, but it did not progress like a normal boot up. I restarted the phone, and it showed the Apple logo, then a red screen then cycled back to the logo and kept looping. I got the phone to the iTunes connection stage by keeping hold of the power button and the home button until the apple logo appeared then kept holding the home button. iTunes recognised the phone, and wanted to restore, but this was unsuccessful  because the phone would keep looping to the red screen and iTunes failed. After loads of Apple support, I was told it was a hardware failure, and like you I live more than an hour away from the store. None the less, I made an appointment with the Genius bods, and they replaced the phone. They said they had never heard of the problem, but really, take a look at these forums and you will see that it is a common problem and I suspect they are keeping it under wraps...
My issue is that as a disappointed customer with faulty goods, why should i have to stick to an appointment to get it replaced? What other store would you have to do this?
The "Genius" didn't even want to see the phone powered up before offering a replacement... Oh, and it turned out they didn't have the exact same model as a replacement so they were going to send me out of the store empty handed.... I kicked off BIG time, and they very reluctantly gave me a phone from the sales stock, rather than the repairs stock..
Not a happy Apple customer anymore, and I feel the more people who know about the lack of service and customer care the better. They need to get off there high horse and join the real world!

  • Black Screen with Apple Logo?( Why)

I have had my ipod touch (2nd generation) for 3 months. One day i was at school using my ipod and my battery ran out so i put it in my backpack. After school i plugged my Ipod into my computer and i got the red battery icon. I knew i had to wait 10 minuets or so for the ipod to power up so i did. Nothing happened. I charged it up to 2 hours but nothing happend. My ipod is not being recognized by my computer or itunes and it charges, but after it charges out of the red portion of the battery, it goes to a black screen with the apple logo in the middle. It is charged because i see the battery charging but once its past 20% it goes to the black apple screen. I reinstalled itunes, bought a new charger, and connected it to several computers. What can possibly be wrong and will i need to buy a whole new ipod? (i tried all the troubleshooting steps)

    See Here for:
    Frozen or unresponsive iPod touch

  • Black Screen with Cursor (Tried most solutions)

To save your time and mine, I’ve tried all options in “press f8” and “recovery disk”. Over the past 3 days, I read almost all threads, videos, articles, and official MS help containing any mention of this problem. I also applied many commands, created few
“SystemRescue CDs” and “Kaspersky Rescue 10” on a usb drive. I follow instructions very well, and have never been stumped by a windows problem like this before. If someone solves this, you are a wizard!
Nothing has worked so far, but I really want to figure this out and not ‘reinstall’. It appears to be a simple and popular problem: “Right after Win 7 boot Logo, I get black screen with white mouse cursor,
no matter if I boot in safe mode, last good configuration, or normal startup”, but all the solutions that worked for most people are not working for me.
TL;DR: (answers to any of the 7 questions in the end will help me out)
Custom System: Win 7 64 bit (updated consistently), 4gb ram, Quad Core 2.66, 64GB SSD (Crucial M4) and 4 hard other drives. Only windows installations/updates have been installed onto the SSD, no other programs. Only 1 OS has ever been installed
on this computer. Never dual booted.
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula. GPU: AMD HD7870LE
    2014-04-19
I haven’t installed or downloaded any programs in the past 3 weeks, and did not notice anything unusual up until this incident.
In the morning the computer went into hibernation because I was away, it couldn’t wake up (usually happens), so I turned off the power supply. Turned it back on, and computer resumed, I was concerned as it may have run out of hard drive space on my 64GB
SSD (4GB free), but it booted fine.
Later during the day, I decided to restart the computer, and as it booted up again, it went into “start up repair”. I let it run and restart, and it arrived at the dreaded Black screen with mouse cursor, of death, right before logon screen.
Symptoms while on this black screen.
Ctrl alt del doesn’t work, power off doesn’t work, cursor can move, pressing ‘shift’ many times doesn’t bring up the ‘sticky key’. No task manager.
Hard drive is not loading anything, just idle.
Computer falls asleep after 15 minutes or so, and can wake up back to this black screen, so it remembers my power settings
Safe mode loads the drivers fine, but also gets stuck on the same ‘black screen with cursor’ forever
I tried every option in the ‘advanced boot’, including ‘safe with command prompt, safe with networking, last known configuration, etc’
Last known configuration, and all of the above, all boots to ‘black screen with cursor’, this means windows believed it booted fine the last time, so it remembered this configuration. That’s because all the drivers loaded without issue. While loading
Safe Mode, I can see windows loading all the drivers ok.
No restore or backups (I know, I do not deserve to live, lesson learned)
I tried all applicable functions from the ‘recovery cd command prompt’, bcdedit, bootrec, diskpart, and still couldn’t get it to boot.
Commands applied in Elevated Command Prompt from Installation DVD: (very careful with backups and overwriting)
Diskpart -> list volume, tells me that 100mb is system reserved, the other 59GB has no label, and is a different partition
Bootrec -> scanos, tells me that I have 0 windows installations, used fixboot, /fixmbr, /rebuildmbr, all successful. Mounting the drive later on RescueDisk’s TestDisk shows no problems with either partition.
BCDedit: shows both boot manager and winloader to be on the same drive, and I referenced it with a typical BCDedit enum output, and nothing is out of place.
I went into Regedit by typing “regedit” in command prompt in Win7 recovery cd, and confimed that ‘Shell=explorer.exe’ under:
    HKEY_local machine/software/microsoft/WindowsNT/Currentversion/winlogon.
Sfc /scannow couldn’t run due to “Pending repairs/restart”
    So I used: SFC.EXE /scannow /offbootdir=c:\  /offwindir=c:\windows
Which ran and repaired some errors the first time. I ran it more just to make sure, with restarts in between, it gave me
Win resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
So the system files appears to be fine and not corrupted.
Bootrec /scanos does not detect any windows installations. “0 Windows installations identified”, yet “Diskpart -> Detail Disk” and bcdedit both detects the windows directory.
    From windows recovery disk:
    Startup Repair diagnosis: (Show Details)
    All tests completed successfully
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully
It seems that the system and the OS boots successfully, and windows believes it boots successfully (that’s why last know good configuration gives me the black screen also, and Win Startup Diagnosis all says it booted successfully”
It’s the second before it enters into the logon screen, the black screen and movable cursor appears, and hangs here forever. What programs load during this step, and how can I find out this info? Is there a diagnosis tool that allows me to see the programs
as they load during windows start up?
    Other attempts:
Then I read it could be windows using “winresume.exe” instead of winloader.exe, since I have “hiberfil.sys” in C:\windows, so I backed it up and deleted it using SystemRescue.
Another thread said “winevt” bad logs, in C:\windows\system32\winevt were causing this black screen, so I backed it up and deleted that also, and it still won’t boot.
I plugged in the devices that were attached (just 1 ext hard drive, through a 10 port usb hub) that was connected while it went into hibernation on April 19th, and it didn’t help.
The files on that disk and the file system is not corrupt; I tested it by taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine. The Sfc Scan also shows that it is ok.
I also unplugged all the other sata drives, switched the SSD sata cable around to other sata ports to no prevail.
    So far I know:
Very unlikely that it’s a virus problem, I haven’t installed or downloaded anything this month, scans from Kaspersky 10 rescue disk shows nothing, Farbar scan shows nothing. I also never install anything suspicious, like toolbars or junk. I scan regularily.
Not a driver problem, since I haven’t changed or updated anything. I unplugged all devices, and starting in 640x480 mode also gives the black screen with cursor. Drivers all loaded fine while starting windows and safe mode
Boot files are intact, windows system files are in the right place since windows actually boots into a shell? Both bootloader and boot manager show up in bcdedit enum scans
Not due to system file corruption, since file integrity are confirmed ok by above CMD commands, and windows diagnostic tool, and testdisk.
    My questions:
What could be the cause of this? I didn’t make any changes to BIOS, windows settings, perform any updates, suspicious activities, installations, or crashes, before this. The files on that disk and the file system are not corrupt either, I tested it by
taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine.
Which program (classpnp.sys? explorer.exe? winlogon.exe?) is being loaded right before “windows logon screen” that would cause it to hang with a black background and cursor?
How can I find out this information? Is there a tool that can record all programs that are being loaded by windows at boot?
I only have access to regedit, elevated command prompt, and I can change files through SystemRescue or Kaspersky recue, how can I get the computer to boot past that black screen with a mouse cursor? The answer seems so close.
From the Rescue Disks, what could I really do to get past the black screen?
Those who are computer technicians could tell me: If I take it to a computer shop or technician, what could they do in a situation like this aside from all of the above? Do they have some ‘next level’ access tools or are they just going to waste my time
and tell me I have to reinstall?
At the very worst, I will obviously reintall. On my 64gb SSD, I didn’t install any important softwares. All my important software installations are on a separate drive. However, will they still work if I did a ‘Inplace Upgrade’ install of windows? Does
    registry get wiped?

    Hi,
Have you tried to take startup repair when booting with the rescue disk?
    Startup Repair
And we'd better bring the PC to the vendors, then take an examination of the hardware health.
How does the Bootrec /scanos show 0 installation identified? We may take a try with chkdsk from command line to check if there are any disk errors:
Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors
Please also take a check if the system reserved partition is stay in health:
Understand (and Get Rid of) the Mysterious Small Partition
Another shoot, please try to rebuild BCD:
Use Bootrec.exe in the Windows RE to troubleshoot startup issues
Regarding the repair install, detailed information please take a check with the article below:
How to do a repair install to fix Windows 7
    Hope this may help

Did you read his post at all as it does not look like it.
As to take it to a vendor "Custom System:"" Win 7 64 bit (updated consistently), 4gb ram, Quad Core 2.66, 64GB SSD (Crucial M4) and 4 hard other drives. Only windows installations/updates have been installed onto the SSD,
no other programs. Only 1 OS has ever been installed on this computer. Never dual booted."
As to your other suggestions he has tried them all as have thousands of us out here , all you have to do is search the internet  and you see millions of hits about this.
And glad to see a moderator can mark a non answer as an answer.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.2 fail - black screen with cursor on login

I have tried to get gnome 3.2 to work properly for at couple of hours now..
I get a black screen with a cursor, when i should get the login screen.
And it just stays there at least for 10 min (tested)
To log in i have to restart GDM once or twice..
And then suddenly i get the login screen.. Sometimes rendered correct, other times it is not, but it works ok...
Once i have logged in there is no problem at all..
    /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log - first attempt is a fail..

Stunts wrote:I also had that problem, altough on a different computer. And by themeing not working I mean "I can't change any dconf settings". It was due to ~/.cache being owned by root (go figure).
Unfortunately this is not the case for me.  I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier.  Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way.  When I start it manually, then it works.
I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).
