Black screen with no cursor after installing Windows 7 through Boot Camp on Retina MBP

Hey all.
So, I have a Retina Macbook Pro (15", late 2013). A couple weeks ago I tried to install Windows 7 on it through Boot Camp.
After some struggles with trying to repair my disk with Disk Utility and having to recover the system etc, I finally managed to actually install Windows 7. However, after the installing was ready, when Windows was supposed to boot, it just gave me a black screen with no cursor. I really had no idea what to do there, I tried to do some research from google but only found answers regarding a black screen with a cursor DURING the installation. However, I managed to launch Windows in safe mode. I deleted graphics drivers that bootcamp assistant had installed, and then it worked and I got to boot Windows succesfully.
However, as probably all of you know, you can't do much without those drivers. Games, videos, overall performance of the system is kinda horrible.
After that, I wiped the whole system, Mac and Windows, and reinstalled Mac. During the Windows installation I was running on Mavericks, now I've got Yosemite. I might try installing Windows again next week, does anyone have any clue why the black screen happened? What could I have done wrong? And the most important question in my mind, in case that happens, is there any way to install the graphics drivers manually from somewhere? After I uninstalled 'em earlier, I tried to find them manually, but couldn't find any.
Thanks!

Yes, that's exactly what was the problem in the first place, I had a USB3 device. Switched to USB2 device and the installation progress started flawlessly.
The later part I didn't quite get. What are those installation methods, how could they cause the problem there? I had no problems during the installation, but after installation when launching Windows I had the black screen, and that I suppose was GPU drivers problem if I'm not totally wrong? I could hear the basic Windows system beeps etc when I tried clicking everywhere (had no cursor either, just clicking randomly), so the system was running there, but just didn't draw the picture at all.

    What DVDs are this ?
If it is OSX Snow Leopard Installation DVD then yes this disc contains the BootCamp Drivers version 3.x and is needed after the installation of Windows to install the BootCamp Drivers.
With OSX Lion BootCamp is at version 4.x and the BootCamp Drivers have to be downloaded during use of the BootCamp Assistant in OSX.

  • Boot Camp Question .... I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp. If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"

I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp.
If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"... will it make my mac suseptible to viruses overall due to having a windows component? also will it make my mac slower as well

If you are only going to use one or two window only programs then I wouldn't waste the space.  Try WinonX it allows you to install exe. Files on Mac without installing windows.

  • Boot Camp: Early 2011 MacBook Pro boots to black screen with blinking cursor after windows 7 installation.

I bought and downloaded the windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bit iso, then proceeded to perform a correct burn to a DVD one at the slowest speed and one at the fastest. all went well. so I open Boot Camp assistant and follow the instructions to the letter, downloaded the driver support to the flash drive. partitioned my drive with more than enough room 150 gb. its starts its install. I get through everything seamlessly where I put in my info all with the exception of my activation code. yet it still continues to finalize the install and does another restart. boots back up to either A. black screen saying press any key to boot to my install disk. B. if I take it out just a white curser. also I read it may be because I had the flash drive in while I was trying to boot so I removed it as well, same result. any input would be much appreciated.

  • Gnome Black Screen with Mouse Cursor after Login

I am using Archlinux 64bit with a Gnome Desktop Environment. Everything was running normally uptill today. When i ran "sudo fc-cache", my system froze. I couldnt open any other app but i was able to access terminal. I restarted using "reboot" command. After that I was unable to log in to my desktop.
The Gnome login screen comes and after entering the correct username and password, all I can see is a black screen with mouse cursor. I then started gnome manually with "startx" and it worked. But still I am unable to use normally (that is the graphical login). I reinstalled gdm but it didnt work. Please help me out.

This is not what happens.  The screen goes black, no curser or anything, then it comes right back on to the same page I was on when it went out.  It doesn't happen when I login, it happens as I am on a webpage or playing a online game.

  • Windows 8.1 black screen with mouse cursor after login (HP 2730P)

I live in Canada and first just to confirm that Windows 8 with all Microsoft patches was running ok on my HP EliteBook 2730P NoteBook PC. Originally I had Windows XP running in it. With Win 8, I just lost few unique HP
    applications.
But last night, just after my upgrade to Windows 8.1, I had the blank screen problem after the login, as you already described. I went to HP and Intel web sites for some help and fixes but nothing really helpful. According
to what I red, it's always someone else responsability but not their's or the easy way to get out of it, not supported on Windows 8 and above. But as my (not so old)   HP 2730P is a NoteBook PC that I am used to work with, I
did a lot of researches to make it work fine with Win 8 and now with 8.1 .
So, after many hours on Internet I finally corrected my problem the same way as ghoust1101 showed previously; with the Info and instructions on youtube.com/watch?v=Rgje-t0OLdI
After the sfc /scannow , I got a message saying that many errors and corrupted files were fixed, plus as showed, I deleted "c:\Windows Activation Technologies", which corrected my problem. Done a reboot and everything was fine after
showing me the correct Windows 8.1 screen and the rest is to get familiar with it.
     Hope this could help...

    Hi,
Actually, I'm not sure what your exactlly problem it is, what's you meaning of Black Screen? All the screen black or just background? While Glad to see your problem resolved, Hope your experience is helpful with others.

  • Why can't I start Mac after installing Windows using boot camp???

I'm new to Mac.... Have installed Windows 7 through Bootcamp... Well, I tried to at least!!  I can now only get into Windows every time I start the mac up.... What have I done wrong - and how do I fix it!?!

    Flying kiwis wrote:
Thanks Vinmar.... I can't see anything down on the bottom fit of my screen, apart from the time, date, connectivity, speaker volume etc. am I looking in the wrong place??
The restart in Mac OS X icon (a grey diamond) will only appear after you've installed the Boot Camp drivers. If you installed the drivers, try clicking on the sideways triangle to show any hidden system tray icons.  You can also use the boot camp control panel to restart in Mac OS X.
For how many partitions you have, you should be able to see those in the Disk Utility application in Mac OS X or the Disk Management app in Windows.  Be careful not to delete any of them.  If you want to remove a partition, I'd use the Boot Camp Utility to do that.  Nore as well that OS X 10.7 and above add a hidden recovery partition to your drive that you won't see in Disk Utility but will see in the Windows app.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Vinmar

dell poweredge 2950 with Perc 5/I RAID, ESXi 4.1 host, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM
After swapping out a failed raid5 drive this vm began displaying inpage operation error popups while checking folder permissions.  event viewer errors:
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2.
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.
chkdsk /r run from the win2k8r2sp1 install dvd command line resulted in more corrections than i was able to screenshot:
After this the server would only boot to black screen with mouse cursor.  same black screen result in safe mode or directory services restore mode.  sfc /scannow, startrep, and registry repair from the folder contents @ c:\windows\system32\config\regback
have been attempted with no improvement.  I am still able to access the filesystem contents using the command line from the win2k8r2sp1 installation DVD -  user + registry files copied over to another drive without problem and i was able to load
the registry hive on another system.  This server was doing dns, domain controller and certification authority but the only important item is getting the CA back somehow.  Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi,
According the information you have provided, the file system is broken.
After the repair, do chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow give any warning or error?
If yes, it means that the file system and system file are not repaired. Please post the error or warning here. It may give some hints.

  • Tecra M2 - black screen with the cursor flashing

    Hi guys,
Im hoping someone out there may be able to help me fix my laptop.
Ive read a couple of posts but not sure they can help me.
When I swicth on my Tecra M2, I just end up with a black screen with the cursor flashing in the top left or I get a screen filled with alternating 0's and 1's.
Sometimes the TOSHIBA splash screen appears with the boot options, other times it doesnt.
I cannot boot to CD and it wont boot to the HDD. Ive taken the HDD out and the CDROM out but it does the same thing which to me suggests that its not getting through the BIOS even as far as the boot sequence.
Does this sound like BIOS failure to you and do you know of a way to fix it? Ive tried taking the battery out, powering off and starting again but the same thing happens.
Any advice would be be appreicated.
    Thanks,
    Ross

I have had this twice now and in both cases it was caused by a faulty HDD - to confirm that the motherboard etc is still OK load the recovery CD in the DVD drive (or even better a freestanding XP disc), press F2 on startup and shift the cursor under the DVD drive as the boot drive.
If the motherboard etc is OK you will get the reload instructions (from the recovery disc) or a Windows install screens (from the XP install disc).
Satisfied that the machine at least works - replace the HDD and recover from the recovery disc or try a Windows repair from the recovery console (from the XP install disc with the HDD still in place).
In my cases I was forced to recover to a new HDD and then rebuild the machine from backups - I now clone the HDD when rebuilt.

  • My laptop L2000 lance Armstrong only boots to a black screen with a cursor.

My laptop only boots to a black screen with a cursor. Can this be because the board numbers may be different then whats on the HD? I swaped a HD from a old and ugly L2000 to a new and shiny looking laptop!   dbarselow

Boot from the first of the system discs (by holding down the C key until the welcome screen goes away) and, in Disc Utility, repair privileges. Not just permissions, but privileges. Then reboot at normal. That will probably fix it.
