Black screen with Quicktime and VLC, no codec?

I'm trying to view a mov file with QT Pro 7.5 or latest VLC and both show no video, only sound. In QT, when I ask for info to see codec, only says
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2, 720 x 486 (640 x 480), Millions
Any clues?

There is a near-incomprehensible explanation here:
http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/icefloe/dispatch025.html
Further investigation reveals this:
Common file formats and their endian order are as follows:
• Adobe Photoshop -- Big Endian
• BMP (Windows and OS/2 Bitmaps) -- Little Endian
• DXF (AutoCad) -- Variable
• GIF -- Little Endian
• IMG (GEM Raster) -- Big Endian
• JPEG -- Big Endian
• FLI (Autodesk Animator) -- Little Endian
• MacPaint -- Big Endian
• PCX (PC Paintbrush) -- Little Endian
• PostScript -- Not Applicable (text!)
• POV (Persistence of Vision ray-tracer) -- Not Applicable (text!)
• QTM (Quicktime Movies) -- Little Endian (on a Mac!)
• Microsoft RIFF (.WAV & .AVI) -- Both
• Microsoft RTF (Rich Text Format) -- Little Endian
• SGI (Silicon Graphics) -- Big Endian
• Sun Raster -- Big Endian
• TGA (Targa) -- Little Endian
• TIFF -- Both, Endian identifier encoded into file
• WPG (WordPerfect Graphics Metafile) -- Big Endian (on a PC!)
• XWD (X Window Dump) -- Both, Endian identifier encoded into file
I also discover that PowerPC processors are big-endian (most significant byte first); Intel x86 processors are little-endian (least significant byte first). AIFF is like PowerPC - it's big-endian. WAV is like x86 - it's little-endian.
Which leads me to suggest that Flip4Mac might be able to convert those files, although as you have a PPC processor you should be able to play them!

Stuck with black screen with Apple and download bar approx 1 quarter done. Downloading Yosemite. It has completely stopped. I can't access anything. Please help

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Computer boots to a black screen with prompts and code!?

    hey
    I have a Powerbook G4 15" 1.5GHz Aluminium.
I recently had big issues with the computer where it froze and kept crashing. The computer then completly died and i had to take it into an apple store for repair.
While it was in i had the ram slot failure repaired also (go apple!)
The technician repaired the directory structure on my hard drive but noted a program, which he thinks is XPostFacto has some how come to be installed on the system. I collected it and as soon as i got home backed up all the data i needed.
When booting the computer into OSX the startup would go to the grey screen with an Apple and the spinning gear. Then a black screen would come on and present me with a whole heap of code about the system etc the system would then proceed into OSX as normal. I managed to copy all the data i needed onto an external HDD however in the process the computer crashed multiple times.
I have now come to reformat the entire thing, i have zero'd the drives etc however even after that, when i boot from the install CD i still get this screen of code!!
I tried to install Panther and it won't work due to an error in installation..
    What do i do?!?!?
I'm not too up for the idea of taking it back into the shop cause they will charge me mad prices ($120 an hour!) to fix it for me..
    Any help would be awesome!
    Powerbook 1.5 GHz G4 15" Aluminium   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Boot from the first of the system discs (by holding down the C key until the welcome screen goes away) and, in Disc Utility, repair privileges. Not just permissions, but privileges. Then reboot at normal. That will probably fix it.

  • Black Screen with MINI and ADC Display

    MacMini OS X 10.5
    Bootcamp
    Win XP
    G4 OS X 10.4.11
    Apple 21" Cinema Display (ADC)
    1600x1024 32-bit color
    Apple ADC power adapter
Dr Bott MoniSwitch mini KVM Switch
    ADC-DVI Adapter
I just installed XP on the Mini and I'm having occasional problems with a black screen on start up or when I switch OS. When this happens, I'm unable to get video from any OS or either computer. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to power all systems down and un/re-plug the display from the power adapter.
I've seen the article regarding black screens under NVIDIA gfx cards but that doesn't apply to my case.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dave

Oh, sorry, didn't get that. That monitor was actually called the 22" Cinema, not 21". Apple had a 21" CRT but I think that was called a Studio Display, so I got confused.
So sometimes it works correctly at 1600 x 1024 under Windows (Bootcamp) and sometimes it doesn't? Is that correct? Those times when it is giving a black screen, have you considered trying to establish a VNC connection to the mini from another computer on the network? You might find that the wrong resolution is being sent to the ACD those times when you get a black screen. Though that doesn't really tell you why it's happening, it's a starting point.

  • Black screen with triangle and question mark

I was rotating some pictures in iPhoto (11-9.5) and all of a sudden in the large image window there is now a black window with a triangle and question mark in the middle. Nothing I can do makes this go away so I can enlarge my pictures in this window. iMac 2009, OSX 9. Please help!
    Thank you
    Carl

    OT,
Thank you. This didn't solve the problem. I saw somewhere in another post about doing some more manipulations but I was too uncertain. I called Apple. The first problem was I had a problem in my disc that had to be solved through a series of manuvers I don't remember. Then I was referred to a senior tech for the iPhoto issue. We spent several hours altogether on this. If I understand it correctly, some of my photos from the earliest time were converted into PSD files. The originals could not be found anywhere on my computer. The PSD file could not be worked with in iPhoto and that was why I got that symbol. I have a time capsule that fortunately had data far enough back we could retrieve JPGs. Again through a series of manuvers I don't remember we brought those up, deleted the PSD files, and put in the JPEG files. Seems to be working now.
    Thanks again,
    Carl

  • Possible issue with Quicktime and VLC

OK,I had updated my Quicktime(7.4)a couple weeks ago and ever since I can't seem to play any avi or mov files with VLC player. Most of the time I get audio but no picture. The error I get after about 5 seconds is "macosx: QT doesn't support any appropriate chroma" Anyone have an idea on how to remedy the problem? I try playing the avi and mov files in Quicktime but they're very choppy.

Suggest that you also post over in the VLC Forums.

  • Black Screen with lines and beeping

While using my MacBook Pro it sometimes randomly goes black with purple lines on the display and beeps repeatedly. I can't control anything and have to turn it off by pressing the power button and then back on to access the MacBook.
I have already taken the MacBook to apple to look at, as it had a problem earlier where it wouldn't boot (just went to a blank white screen) and they ended up replacing the motherboard.
I do have an alert saying 'Service Battery' in the bar at the top, so could this problem be a battery problem? Anyone have any ideas?

If you have a service battery warning it usually means the battery is dead/dying which can cause many issues, and should be replaced ASAP so as to not cause further problems. You can try a SMC (System Managemet Control) reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself.
You can also try a NVRAM/PRAM reset (Link at the bottom of the page above)
You can also have one of the issues ap0llo_* has mentioned, even having the main board replaced does not always mean the new is good, I've had to have one replaced 2 times on one of my machines before. It could be a bad GPU, cable, cable not seated correctly...
But the service battery could be the culprit, at any rate you probably need to have that replaced, and should bring it in for service.
There also may be an issue with the RAM, possibly bad or not seated correctly.
    All the best

    Solutions:
If possible and needed, back up data before troubleshooting. Methods (4) and (5) are for Power Mac desktop computers other than G5 models. The best bet is method (4) if you encounter multiple bad errors.
    1. Unplug the power cord. Disconnect all third-party hardware except Apple keyboard and mouse before you start.
    2. Do NOT re-install any third-party software/hardware until you completely solve the issue(s) and carefully investigate the compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x you install.
    3. If another critical error "Invalid sibling link" is detected at any phases, disconnect and reconnect all internal power cords and data cables for hard drives and any ATAPI device. To do so, you may need to read the computer's CIP Instructions in advance. Normally, you do not need to remove third-party RAMs.
    Method 1:
    (1) Start up from Mac OS X 10.3.x Panther Full Install CD or DVD.
    (2) Re-initialize and re-partition the hard drive. RECOMMENDATION: Select "Zero all data" option if "Invalid node structure" or "Keys Out of Order" error is detected.
If this method is of avail, go to Method 2 or greater.
    Method 2:
    (1) Start up in Mac OS 9.2.2 and shut down the computer.
    (2) Start up from a copy of a Disk Warrior bootable CD for Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (3) Run DW to fix the damage(s)
    Method 3:
    (1) Unplug the computer.
    (2) Find a second ATA drive and jumper it as MASTER. Jumper the hard drive in question as SLAVE. Verify the jumper pin settings.
    (3) Install Mac OS 9.2.x system on the MASTER drive, and update it to Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (4) Start up from Mac OS 9.2.2. Re-initialize and re-partition the damaged hard drive with Drive Setup using the "Zero a
    Method 4:
    (1) Find a desktop computer that has an ATA controller PCI card (SCSI environment) and has two hard drive bays. This will make your damaged drive appear as a quasi-SCSI hard drive. Mac OS 9.2.2 must be pre-installed on the computer. I recommend a host computer that installs an Ultra DMA/xxx or xxx (ATA-x) interface equal to or better than the damaged drive with backwards compatible.

  • Ipod won't play video/podcasts or audio only a black screen with the play symbol and volume/progress bar. games work fine! any ideas?

Ipod video classic 5th gen won't play video/podcasts or audio only a black screen with the play symbol and volume/progress bar. games work fine! any ideas?

    Here's some more info.
I tried installing the latest iTunes to my housemate's PC, logging into iTMS with my account, authorizing his machine to play my content, restoring my iPod to the factory settings, downloading the videos and copying them to my iPod.
It worked fine, and I can play my videos.
I have done the exact SAME thing on my own home PC twice, after completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and the Apple Software Updater. But I still can't get any videos downloaded on my home PC to play on my iPods.
    Any thoughts?

If you delete all the Adobe Reader stuff it will probably fix this. For almost everything, the Apple pdf handling works better.
