Black screen with spinning wheel on startup

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (bought in Dec 2007)
Dual-Core Intel Xeon
2.66 GHz
9gb of ram
2TB HD
I'm running 10.6.8.
My computer froze while in Safari and after shutting it down with the power button, I started it up again and I first get the apple logo with the gears and then the screen goes black with just the spinning beach ball.
I can boot in safe mode.
I've booted from a Snow Leopard disc and ran Disc Utilities and the HD was verified and "appears to be ok". (Also ran a repair permissions)
I've run the extended Hardware Test and everything is fine there too.
I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM.
I've unpluggest all extrernal drives and peripherals and still, the black screen on start up.
From what I can discern from some other posts, this might be a graphics card issue...? I still have the original
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT in my machine.
I've tried rebooting a dozen times and mostly I get the black screen, but a couple of times it's also been stuck on a gray screen.
The last few reboots have been black. Would really apprciate any feedback. Thank you.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 won't shut down. Blue screen with spinning wheel.

it's an 15 inch macbook pro. since I bought this computer was working fine about last year. Somehow, start of this year, the problem begins. Everytime when i opened microsoft word 2011 on mac or Photoshop cs5, and quit the software as normaly. When i try to shut down the blue screen with spinning wheel apears. this spining wheel is endless. But funny thing is that after use other software such as games, web browser (safari) etc. and quit them. when i shut down there was not a problem. only word 2011 for mac and adobe photoshop cs5. Any solutions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook Pro 10.8 won't shut down. Gray screen with spinning wheel.

Previous it happened on 10.6.8 snow leppord.  I thought it might be the RAM problem, so i went ahead and purchased a 16GB RAM. Now I got the RAM up running, i upgraded the computer to 10.8 mountain lion. I thought the problem should be gone by now.  But somehow, it happened all over again, everytime when i use microsoft office 2011.  I even quit every single app fron the Active Monitor (include Active Monitor), and wait for about 5min before shutdown, the gray screen with spinning wheel appeared again. I repair the disk from recovery HD, according to that, there is no problem anymore. But, once again it happened after i used Microsoft office 2011. Is there anyways i could fix it? I suppose uninstall it will make it work, but it's vital.

  • Hangs on grey screen with spinning wheel at start up

Power Mac g4 running tiger hangs on grey screen with spinning wheel (the wheel keeps going tho!) tried resetting the PRAM, PMU, changed the little battery thing on the main board, and starting from tiger dvd and os 9 dvd, dvds just keep ejecting. also tried starting in verbose and safe modes, still the same problem.
I can however access the hd through a network.
    any ideas
    Thanks

The only thing I know is to buy one. Not much help here. I have a collection of OS disks I bought to go along with all the Macs I've had and still have.
You said already that you had reset the PMU, but did you do that according to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939
If not, then this may help. The PMU seems to be a miracle part of the OS. You could then plug the HD back in and a miracle will happen. I've read several threads where people kept doing this and all of sudden everything was cured. I think the last one I read, the person recommended holding in the button for at least 15 seconds and then releasing it. I just go by the Apple tech sheets.

If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

  • IMac has gray screen with spinning wheel, but cannot login

After power failure last night, iMac has gray screen with spinning wheel when turned on, but does not go to login screen.

Having the same problem myself. iMac locked up and I had to hold the power button to turn it off. Ended up with the apple logo screen and spinning wheel. I tried the disk repair and got the same message as yourself, in that it couldn't repair it.
I linked up an external hard drive and installed OSX on it and booted from it. I was able to recover some files, but most I couldn't. I'm currently giving it a one pass erase in the hope (long shot) that a complete pass through the hard drive will show up any faults. Has anyone had this problem and been able to continue using the same hard drive? I really don't relish the thought of having to send it off to be replaced :-/
Assuming that the erase goes well I plan to put OSX back onto it and then run disk utility from directly on the drive and see if any faults show up. I'm kicking myself for not taking advantage of TimeMachine, but we live and learn.

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 empty screen with spinning wheel

    Hello,
I got a problem. I am using iPhoto Library Manager, because I use multiple libraries and the problem occurs only, when I open old 8.1.2 libraries in iPhoto 9.2.1. The conversion starts and ends - I see the whole library, but after closing iPhoto and then reopen a converted library I will get this application window:
I can close iPhoto, but I could not get to any state to see any menue on the left or any event or album information, nor any image in the black. The spinning wheel runs endless, doing nothing.
I tried to remove the preferences - won't work
I tried to rebuild the Library (start iPhoto with options+comand key pressed) as well as using the iPhotoLibraryManager function to rebuild. No change
I repaired the permissions - no change at all.
In iPhoto Library Manager I will get a error after library rebuild process:
Rebuild library is empty and useless.
It only happens to converted libraries. If I open old libraries in iPhoto 8.1.2 they do fine and work, the problem only happens after converting the libraries to the iLife'11 database format and reopen it. After the first convertion process all looks quite nice and well, but after closing iPhoto and reopen iPhoto with the converted library this error occurs.
I found, that within the iPhoto Library a folder masters is present, it contains the photos. When I open iPhoto with a new library - which works fine - and import the pictures from this master folder, this new build library will do fine and reopen without any problem - but all albums, facebook shares, photo descriptions and ratings are lost.
Also in this master folder several other folders were present, showing small images of other photos fram various other libraries, mainly those I shared on facebook.
If the screen with the spinning wheel shows, I click to the modify or edit button at the bottom right of the iPhoto window and iPhoto shuts abnormal - crash report is send to apple.
I have the problem with now three libraries and it would not be worse if I would have this error once and it would appear imediately, but it appears only on reopen after a convertion process - so I found it out as it was to late.
    Any help? Any advice?

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    Regards
    TD

  • Grey Screen with Spinning Wheel

    Hi Community,
I have a late 2006 MacBook Pro that will not load the desktop and will not get past the Grey Screen with the Spinning Wheel. I have read other forums, which have been very helpful.
This is what I have tried:
    1. Safe Mode boots to black screen with login prompt (Used the shift key. Tells me all of my login attempts fail, despite using a correct password. When I tried with the option key I saw the two drives (Mac HD and the Bootcamped Windows), but then nothing.
    2. Reset SMC
    3. Reset PRAM
    4. Loaded installation disks. Ran Disk Utility with no problems reported. Ran Harware test with no problems reported. Will not boot from the installation disk.
    5. Tried the Control-Apple-Power start and nothing happened.
Is there anything else I can do? I have a pretty good back up, but would really love to get into to my hard drive one more time if possible to transfer some last minute work I had done. Would Firewire Target mode be an option (altough I am not sure I can find a firewire cable...I am at a research station in Costa Rica)? If that is not an option or not possible, is there another option to access my files before I erase and reinstall?
I am assumuing that my hard drive is failing. Also, I recently installed an external modem that perhaps caused the failure? My drive is almost full, which I am sure makes my older macbook pro sad And, it is bootcamped...how will all of this affect my windows side? Should I be concerned for my files on it?
Can I perhaps purchase Disk Warrior, would that help?
Thanks so much. I know this is a common post question, but I decided I would seek personal attention from you wonderful experts!
    Regards, Chule
