Black speck on my case

The moment I pulled my new 24" iMac out of the box and set it on my desk I noticed a tiny black speck on the front of the case near the blinking sleep light. I tried rubbing it off with some water and my finger and even tried scratching at it with my fingernail but it will not come off. If I run my finger across it I do not feel it, but I see its shadow on the white part behind the clear plastic so I know its on the surface or very near to it. Since it was there right when I pulled it out of the box I know it came that way from the factory which makes me think that others could have similar marks. Has anybody else noticed this and/or have any ideas on what it could be and how I can get rid of it? Its not a huge problem but it is kind of annoying. Thanks.

I had the same problem, black mark behind the clear case on the front panel.
I brought the 24” IMac from The Apple Store in Brent Cross UK; I wanted to check for dead pixels so I asked to open the box in store after I had paid for it. No dead pixels but a black mark under the front panel, I pointed this out and they swapped the IMac. I then checked the second machine and low and behold another black mark.
Apple then wasn’t prepared to open another IMac, they said I could have a refund or take the one of the opened IMacs and arrange to come back at a later date for them to remove the black mark. Now as you can imaging I wasn’t pleased, I thought Apple were suppose to be a company that cares about its products and customers. In the end I did take the opened IMac with the smallest mark at a discounted price.
As of yet I haven’t returned the IMac, I don’t really notice the black mark wear it’s situated in may office. But there is defiantly a problem with Apple’s inspection system if more and more machines are turning up with these black marks.

  • Speck See-Thru case for MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15 inch

Hi, I recently purchased the Speck See-Thru case for the MacBook Pro Retina. The case seems to fit very snugly and requires some degree of force to remove. The top half of the case proves to be more difficult than the bottom half. Is it normal that it takes some force to pop off the tabs of the case? I am probably over worrying but just want to make sure. Thanks

I have a Speck see-thru for mine and yes, they fit quite snugly. Probably to prevent a "rattling" feeling that would feel even worse. As time goes by and you inevitably have to take it off every so often to clean underneath, the snugness goes away.
Yes, in spite your best efforts, dust somehow finds its way in there and gathers in the corners which soon becomes unbearable and off it has to come. Guess that's the downside of transparency.   Maybe next time I'll get an opaque black model....

  • Will the Speck See Thru Case Fit in the Tucano Sleeve?

I just bought my MacBook Pro 15" and would like to keep it in prestine condition. I have two questions:
    1. I want to protect my new purchase as I will be traveling with it, taking it in and out of my work bag, usage around the house, etc. I read the reviews and I think the Speck See Thru will support the daily usage but I'm wondering if the Tucano sleeve will support the compression in my workbag. I love the look of the Tucano Sleeve (sleek in nature: http://www.tucano.it/US/)and would love for them to work together. So, simply put...does anyone know if the Tucano Sleeve will fit over my MacBook Pro with the Speck See Thru case?
    2. I can't decide between the clear or the black case. I like the grey look of my MacBook Pro...but is the black a solid black or truly see thru black (almost smokey)?...I think black is a slick color as well.

Yes, the 'Specked' MacBook Pro does fit in the Tucano sleeve that I have (i.e. the Second Skin one)
I have the clear speck case as I love the look of the MacBook Pro's anodized aluminium case but then again, I have not seen the black one and so I cannot comment on it.

  • I have a very tiny, fuzzy black speck on the screen of my Macbook Pro 15".

I have a very tiny, fuzzy black speck on the screen of my Macbook Pro 15". It doesn't resemble dead pixels I've encountered in the past (it is only visible behind a white or brightly colored background), and I'm positive it isn't sitting on the surface. The computer is only a year and a half old and my software is up to date.

    Hi austinbread,
It is hard to tell exactly what your issue with the MacBook Pro’s display is, but it is possible that there is a pixel anomaly. See this article for further information -

  • WHITE and BLACK SPECK!

ok, so about 2 weeks ago i notices a speck of white on the bottom left side of my screen. Its hard to see on a dark background but when you open something with a white background its very visable. imagine a small light glare that wont go away. thats kinda what it looks like. I called AppleCare and they said I can bring it to an apple store to see what they can do. they are also sending me a box to send in my MBP. now before i get to the problem with that, this afternoon I noticed out of nowhere a tiny black speck on the top center toward the left side of the isight. whats the deal with that?
Now back to the problem with sending this in. I was just hired to do some web design that is on a deadline and there's absolutely no way to not have this for 10 days or so. I think the best bet is for me to go into the store and see if they can fix it there. which i highly doubt. I need advice on what to do and does anyone else have this issue? Im sorry for rambling but I just tried to fit this all in. haha.

    Hello askool
    whats the deal with that?
The deal sounds to me like your display or video card is failing more as time passes.
I need advice on what to do and does anyone else have this issue?
I would call the store before the visit and make an appointment so you know you have a specific time when they can look at your Mac.
None of my Macs exhibits the problem you describe.

  • How can i get rid of a black speck behind the screen?

Brand new, quad 2.8 GHZ Intel iMac. Beautiful. But has a black speck in the screen. How on earth would i get rid of this? I'm quite positive it's not on the screen. i've wiped it very firmly w/ the cloth provided. the thing is simply on the other side. Ideas?

    Hi Peter,
If you can take it back to the Apple store (assuming you bought it from one). I had similar with a 24" iMac last year and they just replaced it there and then no questions, no arguing. They even transferred all my Data to the new machine. It was hassle free and I walked out of the store with a brand new replacement iMac set up like my original machine.
Don't try doing anything to it yourself if it is brand new, it will void your warranty.

  • About the Speck Seethru Satin Case

Hi guys I'm considering to buy a Speck Seethru SATIN black case for my MBP 13''. I was reading on the internet and i collected some pros and also cons of this case. So please help me answering some questions that will help me decide.
From 1 to 10, how would you rate the protection of the case for the Macbook pro ?
The thing I really worry about is the overheating problem. In my opinion, not only this but anycase will slightly ( or highly ) heat your laptop even though it has a vent. But should I treat this problem as crucial ? Does overheating damage my laptop heavily ?
What I like about the Speck Seethru Satin is the look of it, it gives my MBP a different color that stands out, but based on reviews, these cases are fingerprint magnets. I'm also very worried that if the MBP looks "cheap" when it's full of fingerprint ? a photo would be fabulous.
Last, do we have to take it off every month to clear all the dust in between ? Does taking it off too frequently damage the MBP ?

i would like to say a grade of 6.5
yeah thats true-fingerprints are easily marked on the case.but that depends on the color of your case.a black case will make the fingerprints more standout.a transparent or pink will be less.also i can tell you this case will leave white mark due to the sunlight and self-heat,its not so explicit, cuz its on the back of the mbp.and you can a try software callled smcfancontrol and you set the speed of fan to a high value, the temperature will remain at about 100 F.anyway,i throw it away.i am worrying about the mark on the back of the computer.it is a good product from the angle of only protecting your mbp from scrapes.you can see the temperature on the menu bar:the temp and the fan's speed.

  • Do (*)speck form fitting cases (covers) inhibit cooling on MacBook Pro        Pros?

I am considering purchasing a (*)speck form fitting cover (case) for my MacBook Pro. Looks like they would do a nice job of protecting the laptop, especially on the road. But I was wondering if it would run hotter since all of the aluminum surfaces will be covered. Anyone have experience with these?

Yes, even though they don't cover the vents, it's still trapping the heat in.
Also it tends to make people careless, they thing the plastic case is going to protect their machine.
Better off getting a padded carrying case, or a MacTruck.
The plastic case looks gimmicky, just going to break off later.

  • Little Black Spots on my case..

I've recently gained small black dots on my mac book's aluminum case that I'm not sure what the source is.. I tried reading around online and found out that I might have a special corrosive type of sweat that reacts with the case, does anyone have any special knowledge of this or know how if their is any way to make it less terrible? I'm out of warranty so I can't really send it in, and had a bad experience last time I sent my computer in anyway so I'm hesitant to go to the store. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'll try and get pictures and link them soon.
Edit: The dots are only where I rest my hands while typing (hence how I know it's probably from the sweat)

Pitting was a common problem with the aluminum Powerbooks, especially as they aged, at least for some people. It was only a matter of time before it started to occur on MacBook Pro's. Everyones skin oil has a corrosive affect on the aluminum case used on ALPBs and MBPs. My ALPB didn't start to show any signs of pitting until it was nearly 5 years old, other people had severe pitting after only a couple of years. Some people never experienced it at all. It all depends on your chemistry and how often the machine gets used. Unfortunately, once it starts there's no way to stop it, short of putting some sort of cover over the palm rest area or thoroughly cleaning after every single use. If you insist on having a good looking machine, your only option is to buy a new top case which run about $250 new. Do a Google search for PowerBook or MBP pitting and you'll see some shocking pictures of what can happen when skin oil and aluminum react.

  • Speck See Thru Case - Your Thoughts

I know this question has come up many times about the Speck See Thru series of snap-on shells for the MBP. But after a response to a thread I read the other day in comparison to an answer I received at the Apple Store I'm even more confused.
The advice in the earlier thread advised against the use of the Speck suggesting that it would cause the MBP to overheat, or at the very least run hotter than usual which would in turn lead to an early demise of the MBP.
The advice from the Apple Store Genius was quite different though. He said that it's fine to use the Speck, and although the argument that the aluminum case was designed to disipate heat was true, the bottom of the Macbook was insulated and thus does not offer much in heat dispensation anyway. He added that the majority of heat is released through the vent that runs along the hinge which is not obstructed by the Speck.
So my point is this. If the MBP is running three to five degrees warmer with the Speck, but still within the lower limits of acceptable operating temperture, then whats the harm?
And, is it safe to assume that since the Speck is sold in the Apple Store it's perfectly ok to use?

Joseph, greetings:  There is no speculation on my part.  Heat is the bane of all computers.  Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat.  Plastic is not and will tend to insulate heat rather than dissipate it.  These characteristics conform to the laws of Physics.
Placing two MBPs side by side will prove very little because that does not meet the requirement of a statistically significant sample. What I am suggesting is analogous to a clinical trial, large enough so that the variables among the individuals is such that the item to be studied for effectiveness becomes the sole differentiating factor being measured. (For MBPs that would be the manufacturing variables and the sole factor is the Speck case.)
The result would be two failure curves (each curve consisting of date on the X axis and number of MBPs on the Y axis.)  The MBPs (with out the cases) curve will be shifted to the right of the MBPs with the cases.  If I had said by how much the respective failures would be and the differences, that would be speculation, but I did not.
Even if the MBPs were all operating within Apple specifications, as a group the hotter ones would fail sooner.
In a nutshell, the more heat a MBP, or any computer is subjected to, the shorter its life span.
Perhaps we should get together and develop a cooling system that will enable our MBPs outlast us.
    Ciao.

  • Portg Z930 - black dots on the case

Hi, I've got a Z930-108 and since I bought it some kind of black dots have been appearing and growing on the case randomly, and for no reason for me. If anyone has any idea of what this is or why does it happen please comment or ask for more info if you feel interested. There's a link to Google Drive where you can download the images. Thanks.
    [Z930.rar|https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B36GexyQCeq8a25McmR6Z3dXaGc/edit?usp=sharing]

I added a link to the photos, they are much more detailed than with human eye, did you see them?
I already contacted Toshiba and send them the photos, they said warranty doesn't cover it because it's a physical damage. And I don't want to pay 100-200 for replacing the case.
Do you think they'll charge me for checking it?
    Thanks.

  • Can anyone recommend a glass or plastic screen protector that fits a Speck Candy Shell case?

Hi. Does anyone know if a glass screen protector will be too thick to fit the Candy Shell case? I really don't like the film options. I specifically want to get the Sir Lancelot's Armour glass protector.

Ive seen and played with most all the zippered strapped cases, and most all of them are awful.
it still ended up back at the Incase strapped case, very thin, but very well padded, well made and the perfect all around choice.
id recommend getting a like new used one for $25 on ebay rather than $60 new.  But as you wish.
    like this :

$20 , Incase used like new , perfect choice.
    same case new is $60

  • Pictures of the Black N'Red Vaja case

This thing is pretty cool. Leaves marks on the while iPhone though. I wish I didn't get the belt clip...
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/89794422@N00/sets/72157606819901807/

That's a bit harsh... It actually is a really nice case. I suppose if the Zagg Invisible Shield were easier to apply to the back of the phone I would stick with just that.
    Gone through two of them...
I kept my last iPhone in my pocket with no case, until one horrible day... I got out of my car and the case slipped out of my pocket onto the garage floor. I put a nice crack in the glass screen. So, there was my lesson on not using a case. Apple Store replaced it because they could not see an impact mark on the phone.
So, if you are gonna have a case, should be a good one.
I had the Elan Form hard leather shell case. Was okay but I did not like the two piece connection thing. I ordered the Case Mate Carbon Fiber Case, which was horrible because it impacted your ability to text, because the lip of the case extended onto the screen. I tried the In-Case leather sleeve, but it didn't fit at all, I mean at all. I returned one sold the rest and got this, and am pretty happy with it.
I have Clear Armor on the screen.
