Black square around icons
when I am on the desktop or in an application, there is a black square around icons and I don't know how to get rid of it. Please help.
You turned on VoiceOver, probably by inadvertently hitting Command-F5. Just hit it again to make it go away.

HT204390 Black squares around icons on ipod
I was playing around with my ipod and found myself in the general section. I clicked a few buttons and now my ipod is talking to me and there is a black square around every icon I click making it so i have to double click every app i want to go in. I have tried to undo what i had done by going back into general and clicking on settings but i cant scroll down to accessibilitys to turn this off. All helps appreciated
You have the accessibility VoiceOver feature turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:

Weird behaviour - logged in twice? black squares around focused objects?
Someone else was using my laptop yesterday at work and now I'm getting some odd behaviour. Functionally, everything seems to be okay, but there is a solid black square around GUI interface objects that I focus on in the OS. And clicking on the apple menu lists two instances of Log Out username, Restart, and Shut Down.
I tried repairing permissions and keychain access but I don't even know what to attribute this behaviour to.
Any help would be much appreciated..
Thanks in advance,
MattMatt
Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and check the "VoiceOver" and other settings. You may need to set everything back to default to get rid of the black square.
Not sure about the doubled menu items … -
I was trying to get it to airprint to my supposedly supported HP eprint printer, but was having no luck. After trying to follow the online instructions on the HP website, it told me to turn it off wait 30 secs then turn it back on(along with the other devices but thats not my issue now) When I turned it back on it has a black box around all icons, I have to "double click" to get anything to open, and is not scrolling properly. I have turned it off and back on again, no change.
i am expereincing this problem....what was the solution??

Black squares around apps?
Any time I try to click on an app, a black square appears around the app and won't open. Also I can't switch screens. I just updated to the iOS 5. I've tried reseting it and resyncing it. Anyone else having this issue?
Sounds like some accessibility features have been turned on. See this article for steps on how turn them off.

My iPad won't let me type and has a black square around and thing I touch
my ipad won't let me type and has a blck square around anything I touch. Have done everything online so far...
Your Users Guide has a whole chapter (at the end) devoted to what you do when things aren't going well, generally following the sequence of
Restart - red slider, then boot up again
Force Quit apps - either via Sleep/Wake followed by Home, or via Recents Tray
Reset - hold Home & Sleep/Wake to force reboot
Reset iPad Settings - Settings > General >Reset
Erase All Content - same as above
Restore iPad Software - iTunes or iOS 5 equivalent
You start at #1 and work your way through until the issue you're seeing goes away. If you get through all of the steps and it still doesn't work, you're pretty much out of gas and have to start talking to Apple.
So, firs thing to try? Just power it down and then restart. If that fixes it, great; if not, move along and try the rest of the steps in order. -
Display doesn't fill screen (Black square around)
Hi, thanks for reading.
Y restarted my computer and noted that there is a black space between the border of the display and the screen. Is the same problem in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7175451
I already try to restart the PRAM and the NVRAM, change the resolution and disable the universal access.
Even when i boot the gray screen (with the apple) doesn't fill the screen.
Can anyone help me please?Try the following; in /Library/Preferences find the file com.apple.windowserver.plist and throw it in the trash. Find also in /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/ByHost the file com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxxx is a string of letters and numbers and yourusername is the name on the main user account and throw that in the trash, too. Then restart and see if the wide screen function returns.

While you're at it, go to the Keyboard&Mouse preferences>KeyboardShortcuts and uncheck the VoiceOver shortcut (Cmd-F5) -

Black lines around fields I tab to incl. button, p-d menus
Something weird is going on with my computer: there's a black square around the active field in every app on my PowerBook. For example, if I open a new window in Mail, there's a black line around the New Message icon (the upper-left-most icon in my toolbar configuration). When I start typing in the address field, the black line moves to that field. If I hit Tab, the black line goes to "cc:" then "subject" then the "add bcc..." pulldown menu, then the "account" and finally "signature" pulldown menus, before going to the message window. It's basically the same thing in every app-- an ugly square of thick black lines around every active field in the app I'm working in. I poked around Universal Access in System Prefs & nothing helped. I think my daughter was playing with the computer & did something to it but she's only a year old so I can't ask her! Please help me get rid of this thing! Thanks

Help!!!
For some reason, my perfectly normal G5 running Tiger 10.4.7 has this morning started displaying a black frame around any file icons or sometime in the navigation of the finder.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm suddenly seeing 2-point black boxes around any desktop icon I highlight, and around various elements in any window I'm working in. I have a G5 PPC iMac running 10.4.11. Neither restarting the machine nor running Mac Warrior has helped.
Thanks! I often inadvertently turn on the voiceover when I use the wrong keys to send an element to the back in Quark. Funny, I turned off the voiceover on my own, but never noticed that the black boxes had gone away until I saw your post.

Black outlines around my icons
Every icon I click on has a black outline around it. Plus I have 2 Shutdowns instead of one? It's very distracting
Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on Seeing, and turn VoiceOver off.
