Black squares and dots

On occassion, (happening more often lately but not all the time), when my wife turns on her powerbook, there are little black squares and dots all over the screen. If you go to the monitors control panel and change the number of colors or the resolution, the problem disappears. Any ideas?
Thanks

Not sure if this will solve your particular prob (trashing prefs, as suggested, is also a good idea) but this sometimes help:
1)To create a disc image, once you have your iDVD project the way you want, use Save As Disc Image under the File submenu. It will now go thru all the encoding as normal, (you don't need to insert a DVD) but instead of burning the project,it will create a dmg disc image file to a spot of your choice
2) Once you have your disc image, you can open it in your Mac's Disc Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disc Utilities). There, you will see a Burn button; it will ask you to point it to your saved Disc Image. Follow directions to burn the DVD (this will be speedy since you have already done the encoding)
Again, not sure if this will help with your particular issue, but it sometimes help to eliminate certain iDVD insecurities

  • Blank screen with a black square and question mark went start up

    Hi,
When I try to start up my Macbook pro it will only go to a grey screen with a black square with a question mark inside. Please please help!!!!

Using the disk utility (on first aid tab, which it defaults to) will not erase anything.
Of course if the issue is as I suspect, it's a moot point.
I suspect your Hard Drive is not being recognized. If it is not, then neither disk utility nor the installer will be able to even read the hard drive to let you do anything to it.
Have your backups? You're looking at a replacement hard drive most likely.
    Some things to try:
    Reset the SMC
--disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery
--hold in the power button for 10 seconds
--reseat the battery and reconnect the power adapter
    Reset the PRAM
--press and release the power button
--immediately after releasing the power button, hold down appleoption+PR and keep them held down until you hear the start up chime twice (I like to do it until it dings a third time.)
--release the keys after the chimes
If these steps do not resolve the issue, it is time to back up your data if you have not already done so.
If you have another mac, you may be able to retrieve the data yourself using firewire target disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Now if the host computer does not recognize the target computer, you may be looking at paying an authorized service provider or apple store to retrieve the data for you.
Of course you can send in the computer without doing any data retrieval or backups, but keep in mind the repair center it gets shipped do does not do ANY backup or data transfer. They will replace the hard drive and make sure the new one works, but the new one will be empty.

  • K7N2Delta2-LSR squares and dots

To whom ever may be able to help...
I started haveing some trouble the other day with my start up screen. During the posting and windows start up as well as when I am in the BIOS screens the video is not working right.  I also have all these green squares everywhere on the posting screen. When it goes to the black Win 2000 screen it gets dots all across the screen. I thought mabey the BIOS was bad so I flashed it thru Dos using the /f switch to force the vB.5 and still no luck. After Windows gets to the blue screen that says prepareing net conns and applying security everything is fine as far as video is concerned. I did an upgrade to Win Xp today and still the same. I have used the jumper to reset the Bios while the machine was unplugged and also tried removeing the battery but no luck there either. Ill list all the system spec i know..

I think that is everything that could be relevent but I am very new to this so please let me know if you need more information. Thanks for any help available.

Thanks again for the sppedy reply Bosskiller, and thanks Glenn for taking some time to ponder my problems.
The system has run fine for about six months, I made no configuration changes at all. I was not in the box during the time I set it up and the time it happened.I did try removeing the video card and each of the different ram both individaully and tried combinations. During the troubleshooting process I reset the cmos and even force flashed the bios. I will try a new vga card as I can tell that it must be very out dated. As far as thepower supply is concerned I will upgrade that too. If the system operates good after that I will most likely keep the RAM, if not we can upgrade that too.
Thanks for thesugestion on the VGA, very hard to tell what to buy as everyone makes theirs seem like itsthe rightfit. If I could get a suggestion on the power supply(like what amperage) I would be very greatful. Also if my mind frame is wrong on keeping the wintec RAM mabey a suggestion on brand and configuration. I would like to keep atleast 1.5g so keep that in mindwhen suggesting. I will repost after I can get some parts and try them out, andwill check backfor the suggestions for the rest of the stuff.
Up just in with the new post, that is not a correct link to my PSU , I dbl checked the numbers and the ones I listed are correct.

  • Small Black Stripe And Dots On Screen (MacBook Pro 15")

Last year July i bought my first mac, amazed at it's performance graphics etc etc.
But recently a black stripe appeared out of nowhere, also there is randomly black dots
on the screen, whom appear from time time.
I've read a couple of thing like resetting ram, running diagnostics etc without luck.
Can anybody help me? I afraid they are dead pixels, if so i am very disappointed in the quality of
the screen (a thing that i didn't expect)
    Anyone?

Your computer is new enough that they should be able to know it is under warranty whether or not you have the receipt. If you bought it from the on line store, you may have some paperwork in your email.
If you have access to an external display, you might check and see if the graphics problem is also on the external. If not, the problem may be with your display rather than with the chip. But whatever it is, it will be covered by the warranty.
The store may also be able to refer you to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider should you need one.
    Good luck!

Or is it possible to restore to the previous software please.

I was on 7.1 and just updated to 7.1.2. Issue is I dint backup my iphone in 6 months as I did not have a permanent laptop. Now I just got a new laptop and decided to backup my iphone and also upgrade to 7.1.2.  Issue is - while the update was in progress I disconnected the cable since I was getting late for an appointment. Now when I got finally upgraded to 7.1.2, I dont see my apps and music anymore. They all seem to disappear. I cant even back up to the older date. All I see is the option to back up to the 7.1.2 version only. The only solace is I still have photos intact. Rest all data seems to be gone. Please help!!! urgent!!!
Apps aren't part of the backup, only the app data.
See if you can redownload apps - settings - apps - update - purchase - hit cloud to redownload app.
Did you copy your iTunes media library to your new laptop?

  • IMac Black Squares, Transparent Menu

I was using Adobe CS5 when suddenly my iMac starts acting strange: the finder windows are black, or have black squares and red lines behind the icons, the menus are transparent.
But the computer Works fine in safe mode.
I erased HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion, everything was back to normal until I installed CS5 again, and it went back to the same issue.
Apple Customer care was awesome, but couldn't fix the issue, concluding it might be an Adobe broken drive.
I called Adobe, they do not have live support for CS5 and told me to post on Adobe forum. Before I do that, I was wondering if anyone had this issue w/o Adobe installed.

I sometimes have blue and red square-shaped dots appear on my MBP; especially but not exclusively when I'm watching videos.  The dots don't stay in the same place; and also they are not there all the time.  Also, sometimes my animations (applications opening, windows being dragged, etc.) will glitch as well.  Again, this is not a continual thing; it just happens variously throughout my day.  MBP Model A1212, OS X 10.6.8, 2.33 Ghz 3GB RAM.

Did the original songs that do not appear on the car player play in the Music app on the iPod? Sometimes glitches happen and they do not. Also, If y ohave a 5G iPod/iOS 7, purchase songs  will show with an cloud icon by them if they are not downloaded if Shall All is turned on in Settings>iTunes and App Store

oh and if you use a creative cloud version of Lightroom it could also be that the logon to the cloud is messed up. Logging out and logging back in from preferences in the creative cloud app will fix that. Due to the release of Lightroom CC it appears that adobe's servers have been overwhelmed a bit And many people have strange problems that are solved by logging out and back in.

  • Importing a video that is portrait and make the black square

I Know how to make a video to landscape but how do you make the black square to landscap?
    thanks
    joe

Your comp looks to be set to a standard wider than high format and the video looks to be upside down. You have two options. If you want the comp to be the size you picked when you created it then you have to scale your video to fit vertically (that's an option in the transform menu) and you have to rotate the video layer 180º. If, on the other hand, you want to have a comp that is the same aspect ratio as your video then you should simply select your video in the project panel and then choose File>New Composition from Selection. Then, if your video is really upside down, rotate it 180º
If you are very new to AE, and it sounds like you are, please go through some of the basics and study up. Basic Workflow

  • I just updated the ios 7 on my ipad and now i have this black square in the middle of the screen and i cant use my ipad anymore

after updating the is a black square on the screen of my ipad, why is that and whjat can i do to make that square dissapear?

    Try to reset the device:
    *Device reset*
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • I have tried everything; no toolbar and only a black square. Hours and Hours I have tried all your suggestions.

Last week for the first time in ever having zero problems with Firefox for years all I had was a black screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, searched for hours for solutions, I feel like I've tried them all to no avail. Almost every troubleshooting tip says to start with the toolbar, I have no toolbar in Firefox any longer, only a clear window where I can see my desktop behind it and a black square. Interestingly enough, from memory of course, it's said something about incompatible XP but I've got Windows 7, never had XP on this computer.
Anyway, I'm using Explorer now and I don't really like it. I've really enjoyed Firefox for years and I miss it intensely. Never had a problem on my other computer, either, but it has XP and I don't use it online any longer.
Please please please don't ask me to try any troubleshooting that involves starting at the toolbar, again, I have no toolbar, literally a black screen and only the minimize and close buttons. That is all. Thank you.
I've currently uninstalled Firefox for about the tenth time so as far as I can tell I would have to reinstall again. Thank you for any help that would help me get my Firefox back.

hello KathyAZ, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • Installing a program, added password, all i get is a black square that says REPORT BUG and Setting up,in the middle says procesing login, what can i do? thanks

Hello everyone,I have an IMac that is stuck with a problem, after installing a program, bought from Apple store, inserting my password, started the installing it stopped everything and a black square in the middle of the screen says,REPORT BUG, setting up and in the middle of the square says processing login, I waited a few minuts but nothing else happens,I tried to shut down, but it's still there, what can i do? thanks for any info.Icarorsv.

I'm sorry.  Too old to understand this stuff.  I'm sure this seems real stupid to you.  But I have no idea how one
would "right click on the Original iPhoto Library" (I know, I know, 'as stated").
Do I right click on the symbol in the dock??  Or open it first and then, . .  I can't find a way to right click on the word iPhoto in the top bar.
Or should I open the program you had me download.  There I can find something called "original iPhoto library".
When I "right click" on that I get some options.  None of them are "original folders".  There's "reveal library in finder", and "dupilicate library and "sort libraries".  I have no idea if any of these are what you want, or if any of these might change something.
When I clicked on "reveal library in finder" earlier on it showed me the copy of the photo library that I made a while ago, sitting right where I know it is on my desktop.  And if I click on that symbol it shows me all the pictures again.  Just like in my regular iPhoto files - all the thumbs are there, but most can't be opened to full sized.
Are we making progress here?  I'm sure this is frustrating to you.  This is just pictures of family.  Even the thumbs are nice to look at.  But this is nothing critical - like work related or anything.
    Thanks.

  • IMac boots to a black screen and shows blinking square cursor on top left

iMac boots to black screen and then shows flashing white square in the top left of the screen. After a few seconds an error message - i assume appears.
    disc0s2 oxe0030005 undefined appears.
Does anyone know what this is?
    Can view HDD using firewire
Can load diagnostic disc and run diagnostics with no errors

The disc0s2 should be your OS X boot volume. Have you tried starting from the Install DVD1? Start from the DVD and when you get to the OS X installer go to Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and select First Aid. Choose the top drive in the left hand column and repair. Repair as many times as necessary until no more repairs are reported. Quit Disk Utility. Then go to Startup Disk in the Utilities menu and choose the OS x volume on your Mac and restart.
    Let us know what happens.
