Black squares in Safari
Every time when I open more then 3 tabs in Safari 8 (8.0.1-8.0.2) I see black square on web page content.
Test with another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. If it doesn't manifest the problem, you may be triggering a known bug that affects some MacBook Pro models with dual graphics. The only workarounds I know of are to use another browser on the affected sites, or to disable automatic graphics switching if your model supports it. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

Black Square on Boot Screen after last update
Hi everybody, I made the last security update of OSX on May 25th, (osx 10.9.3), and iTunes 11.2.2 on June 10th.
I do not use to reboot so much the computer, but I do that every 10 or 20 days. After one of those updates, I got these screen while booting up the computer:
As you can see, there is a black square, with the cursor over it. I can move the cursor and the computer seems to start without problems (actually faster) but showing that square. The other difference is also that now I cannot see the usual spinner under the apple logo.
I do not have any kind of boot camp or other OS installed. I have only changed the HD for an SSD one, but this was at november of last year, and everything has worked without problems until this date.
If anybody can give an idea on how to solve it, or if I am the only one who is havving this issue, please, post it here.
Thank you very muchSo here it is:

Anyone else seeing this or have any idea ?OK after a little digging I figured out the problem. The VLC plugin was causing a problem. Possible related to the security update. I removed the file

Hi,
Since a few weeks, I noticed an intermittent problem when I open a window in Safari 2.0.1. A black square appears anywhere in a window; it disappears when I click on it.
Since I can't post any attached file here, I suggest you come here with your browser to see an illustration :

G5 DP 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)hi,
just before thinking taht a problem is caused by hardware, it is better and also cheaper to try to eliminate and isolate the problem within software.
first of all, as the simplest way, just create a new user and then try if the same problem exists.
if not, boot your mac using a well-known media. most probably your installation CD or DVD.
and let us know about what is happening. -
IMac Black Squares, Transparent Menu
I was using Adobe CS5 when suddenly my iMac starts acting strange: the finder windows are black, or have black squares and red lines behind the icons, the menus are transparent.
But the computer Works fine in safe mode.
I erased HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion, everything was back to normal until I installed CS5 again, and it went back to the same issue.
Apple Customer care was awesome, but couldn't fix the issue, concluding it might be an Adobe broken drive.
I called Adobe, they do not have live support for CS5 and told me to post on Adobe forum. Before I do that, I was wondering if anyone had this issue w/o Adobe installed.Hi Eric, Thanks for your reply, I ran the program in safe mode and below is the output. Hoping I did not leave in any personal info (I erased the HD#, not sure if that matters).

Hello there, can someone guide to find a problem fixing Safari. Lately when I open a new tab, the one Im using, instead of showing the loading circle it just shows a black square. How can I fix that?
Thank you.Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari. Try tabs.
If that doesn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file (preferences)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
For LIon: To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library -
Help, all my iphotos will not open, the thumbnails are there but when i click on them i get a black square with an exclemation mark in it?
What version of iPhoto? Is OS X 10.6.3 the correct version of your OS?
Have you cleaned up your computer using the finder to delete files recenbtly?
If you have not deleted the original photos in error then backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your database

I was on 7.1 and just updated to 7.1.2. Issue is I dint backup my iphone in 6 months as I did not have a permanent laptop. Now I just got a new laptop and decided to backup my iphone and also upgrade to 7.1.2. Issue is - while the update was in progress I disconnected the cable since I was getting late for an appointment. Now when I got finally upgraded to 7.1.2, I dont see my apps and music anymore. They all seem to disappear. I cant even back up to the older date. All I see is the option to back up to the 7.1.2 version only. The only solace is I still have photos intact. Rest all data seems to be gone. Please help!!! urgent!!!
Apps aren't part of the backup, only the app data.
See if you can redownload apps - settings - apps - update - purchase - hit cloud to redownload app.

I have a problem with black squares, rectangles, etc, in the contact list on facebook, but it is only in Firefox, I no longer know what to do? I'm using Windows 8.
'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

Album art shows up as tiny small black square in iTunes 10.5.1.42
I had quite a bit of music that didn't have any album artwork for so I (painstakingly) spent a few hours to fix it i.e. used MPTagThat to look up artwork and meta tag info online.
But when I went to iTunes, all that artwork ended up as a small black square. I don't get why.
The artwork seems fine in WIndows Explorer. I click on a song, and there it is. The way I picked it. Yet when I go to iTunes, it's that same annoying black square.
Anyone knwo how I can fix this? I have something like 400 songs whose artwork I had to look up. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this without going through each and every song?itunes gets wrong covers alot but i do not know what to tell you about ipod thing

There is an image of a black square with an up arrow on the lower right corner of my screen. Does anyone know what that is? Sometimes it has a line though it. Thanks.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Ruggs,
Can you tell us a bit more? What model system do you have? What OS were you running?
When did this first happen? I.e. after any updates, etc?
If you go into the BIOS, does it see the hard disk listed?

Transfered video's from Casio Exilim appear as black squares in iPhoto 08
Video's appear as black squares within iPhoto instead of first frame. Nevertheless the black squares still have video logo and duration indication and after double click will open and play in Quicktime. However, this is quite inconvenient if you look for specific videos.
How to fix this?
(I used a Casio Exilim compact camera to shoot these videos)Chrisjan:
Are you able to play the videos even though the thumbnail is black? You might try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -

Can anyone out there help? I am a newbie to MacESP Dan
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
What is the source of these photos? The most common cause of "black" photos is that the photos are not RGB (the only color model supported by iPhoto) - if they are scanned photos and have a gray scale color profile you will have to change them to sRGB to work in iPhoto -- If that is it and you have lots to do, Old Toad has an automator script to do bulk conversions - search his posts for a link
