Black thumbnails and pictures
Hi all,
I've been having this problem lately with my iPhoto, when I try to import photos into my iPhoto from only one particular camera (my other camera when importing photos does not have this problem). All the vertical photos come up as black, also the thumbnails. I have also been referring to this previous thread for help as it's the same problem - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3413585 - but none of the suggestions have been of any help. My camera is not on auto rotate, and i know that iPhoto does not do this itself, but I know that the camera's auto rotate function has already been disabled. I know that the files are not corrupted because the 'original file' is there and looks fine when I look for it manually in the finder, but I don't know how to change iPhoto so that it doesn't automatically modify the vertical photos and replace them with the modified photo. I am also trying to rebuild the library now, but it's taking hours.
Any thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
My suspicion is that your problem correlates to a photo orientation indicator set by your camera in the photo file.
some ideas
--Choose one photo which displays black in Media Center
-- In the PSE Organizer thumbnail area, select that photo and display the Organizer Properties panel/window for that photo. within the Camera Data of that Properties window you are looking for an Orientation field - what does it say ?
-- Now in the Organizer, rotate the thumbnail of that same photo 90 degrees to the right or to the left and then rotate it back in the other direction
-- Do whatever you may need to do to refresh your display through Media Center and check if this photo displays OK.
After you post back with your results, we can discuss in more detail the what and the why. If my theory is correct the solution should be easy.
FYI - I suspect that your identifying that the problem was specific to portrait photos which had not been edited will be very significant in identifying what is happening. Good analysis.

Black thumbnails and pictures in Media Center in PE8
Hi,
I've had this issue for years (in PE6, 7 and now 8) and on various Windows versions (XP MCE, Vista and now on W7 x86 and x64) but I've finally decided to try and do something about it as I'd really like to be able to use the MC plugin.
As the title says, some of my pictures appear black (both the thumbnail and the picture itself) in Media Center. All my pictures are fine in the desktop version of PE8. It seems to happen exclusively with pictures that are taken vertically (portrait orientation), those in landscape are fine. But some portrait pictures (though very few) appear fine too. I've also found out that if I open a "black" picture in the Editor and save it (without changing anything), then it will appear fine in MC. And I've noticed that it's only happening with my camera (Canon Ixus 860 IS) although I had the same problem with my 2 previous cameras (both Canon PowerShots). The memory cards were different too.
I'm pretty baffled by all this and I really don't know what I could do to sort this out. If anybody has had the same problem or if anyone can think of a solution, any helps would be greatly appreciated!

When I import some photos that I scanned (doesn't happen to all) into iPhoto some of them show up as black as the thumbnail and when I click on them they show up when expanded. Also, some of them stay black...even when I've imported a perfectly fine jpeg file it sometimes shows up as black. What do I do?? How can I fix this??
Thank you for your reply. No, they are full color pictures.
I think I found a workaround.
The pictures were in JPEG format. I opened them up and saved them in JPEG-2000 and that seemed to work fine. The pictures don't seem to be as vibrant, but that's ok.
Any other ideas as to what the heck's going on? There are some .tif images that are screwy as well.
Thanks! -
Black thumbnails and negative images after import
I'm experiencing a problem with iPhoto 6 and some images importing with black thumbnails and negative main images.
I've tried replacing the sRGB Profile.icc (it wasn't missing for me), but that didn't work.
Any suggestions?
1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.5)Are those negative images B/W photos? If so they may be Grayscale mode. Download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application form Toad's Cellar and drop the original files for those photos onto it. If it's a grayscale mode file it will correct the situation. iPhoto 6 does not play well with Grayscale images.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto 9.3 shows black thumbnail and preview
When I import picture in portrait orientation iPhoto 9.3 creates black previews and thumbnails.
Is this a problem of iPhoto 9.3?People have been reporting this for a while now, with no fix at this time.
Many folks find that rotating the image and then rotate it back will get them a thumbnail.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and report it.

Rotate thumbnails and pictures
Hi,
I have created a 500+ web photo album using
>commands>create web photo album on my Mac.
Although in the folder where the pictures are stored every
picture is rotated correctly, after creating the album the portrait
pictures are reverted to landscape, both in the thumbnails as well
as in the underlying individual picture.
How can I rotate them into the correct position"PimV" <[email protected]> wrote in message

This statement is confusing to me. If the images are portrait
orientation,
it just means that they are taller than they are wide. I
don't understand
what you mean when you say that they "are rotated 90 degrees
clock-wise".
Who rotated them? When?
> Same in iPhoto and Aperure.
Are you saying that, before you make the photo album, when
you view the
images on your hard drive by whatever method, they look the
way they should,
whether they be portrait or landscape? Ok.
> Now I try to get them into a webalbum, and all of a

Like originally? I thought that originally, they were
oriented the way you
wanted. Sorry, this makes no sense to me.
> I can find no way to rotate them anymore, except for
piece-by-piece
> openeing
> them in freworks hwich is undoable with 250+ portraits
All I can say is that I've used Web Photo Album a hundred
times, and I've
never seen it alter any image in any way.
Are you certain you're not confusing one folder of images on
your hard drive
with another, and using the wrong ones?

Lightroom 4 video black thumbnails and playback
On loading I see thumbnails for avi videos for about a second and then they go black. On playing in Lightroom the screen is black but the sound is fine. The videos play correctly in Quicktime and other programs.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
LR4 Windows 7, Core i7, ATI Mobile Radeon HD5850, 8Gb RAMI used a video conversion program to convert to a different codec. It probably does not need a full codec pack installed, just the coded changed. Google 'codec changer software'. I have not tried any of the free ones so make sure that you make a copy of any file before converting it if the program overwrites the original file.

Black thumbnails and inconsistent previews
This has long been an issue with Aperture for me, I use Aperture 3.5.1, OSX 10.9.4 . Editing photos sometimes has the previews stuck on a few places, sometimes when exporting photos to jpeg or just simple editing I get a black photo. To fix it I had to disable some of the editing blocks and renable them, this is very annoying and sometimes I had to restart aperture.
Seeing that Aperture stopped development I wonder if bugs like this will ever be fixed?ARRRGGG, this is stupid. Apple leaves Aperture with all it's bugs and leaves everyone behind. No updates, no fixes. I want my money and time back!! >:(((

I've had a problem pop up recently, a number of my pictures are now showing up with black thumbnails and previews. I have tried everything, deleting and re-generating both, repairing permissions, rebuilding database, even working on another computer and nothing works. Aperture just keeps creating the same **** BLACK jpegs. I can see/open the original jpg in preview/photoshop, etc and it is ok. Dunno where to go from here.....
Lion with the latest Aperture.
Yes, the original images (JPGs taken on the camera) are ok. I can see them tucked away in my Apeture Library folder. When i delete and regenerate previews and thumbnails Aperture creates jpgs that are black. I tried using the same library on a different computer by booting my laptop into target disk mode and got the same result.
I finally gave up trying to fix this, and instead deleted all those photos. I have a 'master' library i import all my photos into before moving them to my 'live' library (that doesn't include the RAWs) so i just reimported for that library. -
Photos missing, black thumbnails in iOS5
Here's the problem. I'm noticing that in my camera roll there are a bunch of all black thumbnails that should be actual images. If I try to open the black thumbnails, they are all black (i.e., the thumbnails aren't the only thing messed up). In addition, some of the thumbnails are grey images that look like they have a frame around them.
I've had the phone hooked up to iCloud and photo stream and have disconnected it from icloud and neither seems to make a difference. I can't figure out a pattern as to which pictures are missing. In addition, the missing pictures do not appear in photo stream either. They are just black thumbnails of pictures that apparently can't be retrieved. I also noticed that in my camera roll some of the thumbnails are out of sequential time order.
When I have photo stream on, there are no black thumbnails in it. Some of the black thumbnails (but not all) from the camera roll appear fine on my laptop. I have it connected to photostream to automatically sync new photos (windows 7). However, this doesn't account for all of the missing photos, which was my first theory.
It seems like there are a lot of people with similar problems, but I haven't heard it described this way and I can't figure out a pattern to when the images are missing.
Thanks for any help.Had exact same issue on my wife's IPhone 4 IOS 5, had a back up of most of the photos and was only the last weeks that were "missing"? so was feeling brave and followed the steps in the below links and deleted the 3 files using iexplorer rebooted and it restored all the photos and rebuilt the thumbnails list.
hope it works for you as well.

Lightroom Slideshow black thumbnail
Greetings -
I have been searching the forums to see if anyone else has posted this concern.
I have created a slideshow using LR5 - even added music - works great! ... However, after upload it creates a black thumbnail and people perceive this as an issue with the video.
Is there a way to alter the slideshow not to do this?
JaeHow many images for the slideshow. How long before selecting slideshow and hitting play is? G4 is real slow for LR, and it takes time for the Slideshow to render. Have you first rendered standard previews?
Also, just to be sure, check your monitor profile.

Thumbnail and image issues iPhoto 'o8 & Leopard
I installed iLife '08 a few weeks ago and then installed Leopard on the day it was released. I have recently imported a few high-res images (adjusted in Photoshop CS2) and some of them are listed in my iPhoto library but I can not see the photos. I simply get a black thumbnail and when I double click the image it does not appear in the separate window. I can see the image when I go to make a slideshow, but I can see the image when viewing it in the folder or event. Any idea what the issues are?
Thanks,
MarkMark
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

Imported and created "optimized media" but thumbnails and video is missing!!
Hi guys,
My i7 MacBook Pro just spent the last 12 hours importing a selection of h.264 .mov's from my Canon DSLR. I had selected "creat optimized media" to convert it all into ProRes at the start like I have for my other projects in FCPX. But this time, once it had completed, only a couple of the clips have thumbnails/ play video when scrubbed over, and the vast majority of the clips have black thumbnails and only play audio. I tried restarting FCPX without any luck... any thoughts on what's going on? If I have to spend another 12 hours doing it over again, I'm going to have one unhappy client.
Between random bugs like this, freezes, crashes and the lack of ProRes LT (I'm bloating all my Canon video files by converting them into regular ProRes and hogging up hard drive space at an alarming rate), FCPX is really starting to get on my nerves. I've been really patient with the software and wanted to like it so much - I even gave it a positive review on the App Store, but Adobe Premiere is looking better and better every day.
Thanks in advance for any help guys.Just out of curiosity- what happens when you click 'Create optimized media' off in preferences? Also- are the original clips still visible and working on your hard drive- i.e. the H.264 clips from the camera?

I opened iPhoto today and over HALF of my photos events are BLACK! when i go deeper into that event, the thumbnails show (phew), but if i choose an image to enlarge i get a big FAT ( ? ) for an image!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON??? are they gone? i'm freakin out, i've guarded these nearly 4,000 missing photos for years! I have backups of most, but what gives with the black events and question marks?? do i have to delete an event and re-import it?? help!
Experianced this problem just yesterday. After rebuilding the iPhoto database and all the other options to try and repair it I followed directions to recreate the library which solved the issue. All of the created events will still be retained using this method but I believe any edits made to photos might be lost. Although if you import the modified folder in the same manner as before you should have your edited copies again but I don't think you'll be able to revert to original on them.
First move your existing iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the desktop.
Start iPhoto and tell it to create a new library.
Ctrl-click your iPhoto library on your desktop and show package contents (might be listed as something else but don't have access to my Mac to check).
Drag the originals folder from there into the iPhoto window and it should import your photos.
At that point all should be back as they were. If you've edited a bunch then drag the modified folder in just like you did for the original folder. Then you should see both your edited and the original photos side by side in your library.
Try the other options first but if nothing works then this certainly does. Even if it's not the best way to do things. -
I like and use Top Sites but it has become unsuable with this constant blacking out and reloading the thumbnails. My MBP has not seen a problem at all.
I have been searching every other day for over a month trying to find a fix in Windows Safari with no joy. I want to resolve, not switch browsers. Please offer up a solution that only refreshes the Top Site thumbnails once a day or as some controlable interval. Started about two versions ago, now on ver 5.1.5. Windows 7 64bit.
Safari 5.1.5 for Win64 bit, Windows 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???
thanks again
