Black thumbnails of scanned images

I scanned some pictures using Image Capture and then imported them into iPhoto '08. All of the thumbnails are black. The pictures look fine. The thumbnails appear fine in Finder. How do I get the thumbnails to appear in iPhoto? What causes this? I've scanned many pictures before without any problem using the exact same process. Not sure what has changed other than upgrading to iPhoto '08.

Support of the grayscale mode with the embedded profile Dot Gain 20% has been dropped. If the grayscale mode file does not have the profile Dot Gain 20% iPhoto will support it as seen in this screenshot:
Some scanners add the Dot Gain 20% profile when saving as grayscale and that's why iPhoto can't use it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Black thumbnails and negative images after import

I'm experiencing a problem with iPhoto 6 and some images importing with black thumbnails and negative main images.
I've tried replacing the sRGB Profile.icc (it wasn't missing for me), but that didn't work.
    Any suggestions?

Are those negative images B/W photos? If so they may be Grayscale mode. Download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application form Toad's Cellar and drop the original files for those photos onto it. If it's a grayscale mode file it will correct the situation. iPhoto 6 does not play well with Grayscale images.
    Do you Twango?

  • How do I smooth black and white scanned image?

I am trying to edit some scanned images that appear to be printed on linen with the pixels showing.  I scanned them at the highest quality possible but that didn't help.  So, I tried editing using the blur feature.  Not only is that quite time consuming but I fear I am losing some of the quality of the image by doing it this way.  Where do I begin and what steps do I follow to take out the checkered effect?

Whats the size of scanned TIFF?

  • Black thumbnails when importing scanned photos

Recently began a large scanning project using an Epson V200 scanner, Image Capture, and iPhoto 8. Worked fine for over 200 black and white photos, but suddenly iPhoto began creating (mostly) black thumbnails with traces of color (even though I am scanning black and white photos). Clicking on the photo when in iPhoto causes it to act like a negative version of the photo. Preview can load and view the scanned photo just fine, so the file seems OK.
Just tried a smaller color photo; scan and import worked fine.
    Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

    TD:
Sure enough, it worked; (re?)set Image Capture to do 'Color' even though I am scanning black and white, and it works now. Assume it got toggled to black and white somehow (dont remember doing that, but possible, I guess), as all previous black and white photos I checked have the RGB profile. Fun with computers...?
Thanks for your very quick response; great work and much appreciated.

  • Black Thumbnails After Importing Scanned Picures

Last week I begun to scan all my analog photos.
The first 24 pictures scanned in RGB, saved as JPEG 8, imported in iPhoto - great!
Second round, nothing changed except the Mac OS X 10.5.2 update, all scanned pictures that I try to import to iPhoto end up with a black thumbnail. All files are displayed correctly in Preview, in Finder and elsewhere.
Please help. What is the Problem?
P.S. Opening and saving these files with Photoshop Elements solves the Problem, but is not an Option for thousands of photos.

This sounds exactly like what happens when you import a greyscale image. Check the profile of the pics - you can do this in the Preview -> Tools menu.

  • Need help editing scanned images of old photo album pages PSE 9

Before I begin this project, I thought I'd get some advice from someone who has undertaken a similar project.  I have three photo albums from the 50's and 60's.  The albums were made by my mother who mounted the photos (mostly black and white but some color photos) on construction paper (of various colors) using the corner holders or glue.  She hand cut the construction paper so each page is not a perfect rectangle ( about 11" tall, 8.5" wide).  The pages were punched and put into a three-ring binder.
She added text to the edge of the photo and/or to the construction paper.  Each page contains one to 6 photos and text.  Each album has about 120 pages.  I want to keep the notes on the construction paper so I scanned each page into a TIF files, 400 dpi and stored the images in a separate folder for each volume.
I use (poorly) PSE 9.  I see it has a auto straighten/crop feature that can be used one photo at a time.  I tried the divide scanned images function and that did not fully separate all images on the page and also created an image for stray objects on the page such as an unused corner holder.  (I know those things have a better name but it escapes me now.)
I plan to create photo books for my siblings.  I am now thinking of cropping the image of each page (rather than each photo on the page) into a uniform size, adjusting levels, contrast and sharpness, saving this image to a JPEG file, and using these edited JPEG images to create the photo book.  Since each page was hand-cut, there will areas of white where one page was torn or cut smaller than another page.  Some pages will have blanks where old photos have been lost leaving behind only the corner things.  It won't be perfect but it will be an image of the album as it exists today.
    My questions are:
The pages are about 11 by 8.5.  Does anyone know a photo service that prints photo albums in a portrait layout in this size?  I  have been unable to find one; it looks like most online photo books are wider rather than taller.
Let's assume I use a company such as Shutterfly that offers a 12x12 format.  I assume it would be better to edit the images in PSE9 rather than any online software.  What should I do to keep the proportions in the current images true but make the image fit a 12x12 page, for example?
IS there any other editing software anyone can recommend that will speed this up, hopefully a software that would take multiple photos at one time, auto-straighten and auto crop to a set size?  And also auto contrast/level/sharp.  If I could use such auto features on these images and then go back and adjust the photos that did not play well with the auto features, that would save me time.
I appreciate anyone's input.  I dread doing this but we have one set of photos and 5 siblings so it has to be done.  Thanks!

    Hi,
Mentioning your issues one by one:
    1) PSE does not have any portrait Photobook available, so your thought was the best way to get the work done is by choosing the 12x12 - shutterfly one.
    2) PSe does a good job of editing the images. You can set your images of approx. 11x8  size to fit to the 12x12 page. Just choose a one photo page Layout for the page and then right click on the image to " Fit photo in the frame".
    3) If more edits are required for the image, you can easily go to Advanced mode and edit your photos, layouts, move the frames, images or add effects to the images.
    4) Photo book creation sure takes time. because, you want it to be the best. I am sure PSE would help you best here.
Go ahead and create you photobook. Inc ase you get stuck somewhere, you can always post here to get help!
    Cheers,

  • Black thumbnails

I recently worked on a photo in PSE6 for mac, saved it as a .psd to the desktop, then dragged it to iphoto 7.1.5. Rather than seeing the usual full color thumbnail, I see an almost black thumbnail-more like a VERY underexposed photo as there is a tiny bit of blue color. When I open the image in iphoto, it is still nearly black, but when I right click to "edit in external editor", it will open normally in PSE. All my other thumbnails are fine.
I don't know if my problem is with iphoto or PSE, but I'm sure I have some setting wrong. The current settings are:
    mode: RGB color
convert color profile: apply sRGB profile
color settings: allow me to choose
in the "save as" box I checked "embed color profile sRGB IEC61966-2.1"
BTW, in iphoto, I tried to rebuild the library and repair the permissions.
Can anyone help? I had no luck with the Apple folks.

Make sure the color profiles are consistent in both iPhoto and Elements.
Images are usually color managed on the Mac but make sure when saving in Elements that the profile is embedded e.g.sRGB, aRGB, ProPhotoRGB etc.
It also helps to use Elements as the nominated external editor in the iPhoto settings.

  • Black Thumbnails & Previews

I've had a problem pop up recently, a number of my pictures are now showing up with black thumbnails and previews.  I have tried everything, deleting and re-generating both, repairing permissions, rebuilding database, even working on another computer and nothing works.  Aperture just keeps creating the same **** BLACK jpegs.  I can see/open the original jpg in preview/photoshop, etc and it is ok. Dunno where to go from here.....

    Lion with the latest Aperture.
Yes, the original images (JPGs taken on the camera) are ok.  I can see them tucked away in my Apeture Library folder.  When i delete and regenerate previews and thumbnails Aperture creates jpgs that are black. I tried using the same library on a different computer by booting my laptop into target disk mode and got the same result.
I finally gave up trying to fix this, and instead deleted all those photos.  I have a 'master' library i import all my photos into before moving them to my 'live' library (that doesn't include the RAWs) so i just reimported for that library.

  • Photos missing, black thumbnails in iOS5

Here's the problem. I'm noticing that in my camera roll there are a bunch of all black thumbnails that should be actual images. If I try to open the black thumbnails, they are all black (i.e., the thumbnails aren't the only thing messed up). In addition, some of the thumbnails are grey images that look like they have a frame around them.
I've had the phone hooked up to iCloud and photo stream and have disconnected it from icloud and neither seems to make a difference. I can't figure out a pattern as to which pictures are missing. In addition, the missing pictures do not appear in photo stream either. They are just black thumbnails of pictures that apparently can't be retrieved. I also noticed that in my camera roll some of the thumbnails are out of sequential time order.
When I have photo stream on, there are no black thumbnails in it. Some of the black thumbnails (but not all) from the camera roll appear fine on my laptop. I have it connected to photostream to automatically sync new photos (windows 7). However, this doesn't account for all of the missing photos, which was my first theory.
It seems like there are a lot of people with similar problems, but I haven't heard it described this way and I can't figure out a pattern to when the images are missing.
    Thanks for any help.

Had exact same issue on my wife's IPhone 4 IOS 5, had a back up of most of the photos and was only the last weeks that were "missing"? so was feeling brave and followed the steps in the below links and deleted the 3 files using iexplorer rebooted and it restored all the photos and rebuilt the thumbnails list.
hope it works for you as well.

  • Black thumbnails in iPhoto 6.0.5

I never had any problems with iPhoto (v. 6.0.5), but last week any photo or file imported showed as a black thumbnail. Clicking on the thumbnail brought up the picture just fine. I tried rebuilding the thumbnails and the library database, and this made all my thumbnails black! The only way to fix this was to use a backed up Pictures folder; importing still brought blanks after restoring.
I searched thforum, and tried a few recommended fixes, but nothing has worked. I've even tried setting up a new user account, which had nothing in the Pictures folder, and still got black thumbnails. Thinking the problem might be the app, I moved v. 6.0.5 to my desktop and re-installed v. 6.0. Still a problem, even in the test user folder.
So what would cause iPhoto to suddenly behave this way? What else might I try to fix this? The app is pretty useless to me if I can't get thumbnails of imported images to show.

    MRKinLA:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You're having a totally different problem than xophile. Are the outlined boxes thumbnails or the full sized image when you click on a thumbnail. In either case what you're seeing is a result of the library losing it's link between that file and the library.
    If it's the thumbnail image that's the outline I suggest you try the following;
1 - open the iPhoto Library/Data folder and move all the folders inside to the Desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
See if that won't get your thumbnails back.
If the outline window is the large image window you have two options:
1 - again launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - if that doesn't work you'll have to create a new library from scratch an import the Originals folder from the current library. Here's how:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do you invert a black and white photo image on a Mac?

I have some glass plate black and white negatives that I would like to scan into my Mac and then invert the images to generate the photo.  I have Aperture installed already but I can't seem to just have it invert the scanned image.  Is there another way to do this with just the photos?  I can't seem to do it with iPhoto or Preview either.

William answered this already, but since I made a screenshot, I don't want to waste it:
Set the "Range" to "Normal" before you drag the control points on the RGB curve up and down. That is easier, when inverting the curve.  It tends to wiggle, and "Normal" will constrain it to the range you want.
After you defined this adjustment for one of your scans, lift and stamp it to the other scans or save it as an effect from the "Effects" panel.
Then you only have to adjust the curves once.

  • Lightroom Slideshow black thumbnail

    Greetings -
I have been searching the forums to see if anyone else has posted this concern.
I have created a slideshow using LR5 - even added music - works great! ... However, after upload it creates a black thumbnail and people perceive this as an issue with the video.
Is there a way to alter the slideshow not to do this?
    Jae

How many images for the slideshow. How long before selecting slideshow and hitting play is? G4 is real slow for LR, and it takes time for the Slideshow to render. Have you first rendered standard previews?
Also, just to be sure, check your monitor profile.
