Black triangles in the dock

I notice there have been discussions regarding the change in the Leopard dock, leaving the black triangles behind and going to what I would call the "faint blue blob" under an application to let you know it is up and running. I can't see these blue blobs very well, but after a brief search found an application called Dock Delight 1.0 which you can download from Versiontracker here. This application allows you to put these black triangles back into play, although they are a bit smaller than I would like. But at least I can tell with a casual glance if an application is open. The other solution involved diddling around in the Terminal, something a bit risky for the average user.

Greetings,
Unless you using a non-default graphics/resolution display or have a very busy and contrasty background, the little Blue dots should stick out quite well on a 20" iMac or even a Macbook.
I have a 20" machine and several others, but I use the default resolution and a fairly plain background. Like I say, I can quick scan the Dock and at an instant, I know what is running.
Most 3rd party stuff often cause other issues - I try to avoid any of that sort of enhancement.
Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

  • Blue ball next to black triangle to the left of my  Life Stories Blog. 8-(

    Should I be concerned?
In iWeb, there is a blue ball/circle to the left of the inverted black triangle that is next to my Life Stories Blog in my main site. There is no such blue ball/circle next to the 4th Down Blog in my 4th Down site.
This blue ball/circle is recent. I just now opened my iWeb program and there it is. A new addition, a surprise.
What's up with that blue ball/circle?
If it is a message, then what is it messaging me to do?
    Lorna in Southern California
    Edit:
I just remembered that I also have a RED dot on my iWeb icon in my Dock. I remembered that the red dot means that there is a Comment in one of the blog entries, so I did go there hours ago and read it (for the Rodney Clown Doll), but then subsequent to my reading the comment, the red dot on my iWeb icon in my Dock did NOT disappear.
I had other things to do so I quit iWeb. Now I am back and notice that in addition to that blue ball/circle, the red dot is still there and has not disappeared. Shouldn't the red dot go away after the comment has been read or at least after the program has been quitted?
And since both the red dot and the blue ball are connected to the Life Stories Blog, I think that something might be wrong with that blog.

    Lorna,
Yeah I think something is wrong w/ the blog. I say
this because I posted that comment to the clown (I
don't like clowns they are spooky) and it didn't
    take
the whole comment. Not much longer but it had
something funny in it about Monk.
    jabberwock
If I highlight your comment and paste it somewhere
else, it shows up in full:
Now I don't mean to scare you....but you are a
clown and clowns are very very scary. Monk has it all
over you. Please stop scaring all the girls away.
    Your friend,
    Harley Quinn
I think the problem with Lorna's blog entry (just
that particular one) is that she has
manipulated/moved the entry area and the photo area
around and the entry area is much narrower than it is
    supposed to be.
I left a comment. It is supposed to say:
Testing to see if this comment will be shown in full
from left to right because Lorna has made this space
    skinny...
    But it doesn't all show.
Jabberwock and Allyson -- thank you very much for finding this problem! Now I know not to manipulate that space too much. Sooooooo..... the space is too skinny. And I would like to make it wider so your comment shows, but am scared to, because sometimes when I have gone and moved things around, the DATE changed on me. I will go to see your comment now. Knowing me, I will fiddle with the skinny issue.
BTW: I agree that clowns are scary. Probably a lot of people feel this way, too. Think of recent villains.. many have been clowns. The clown in "It" was horrific for me.

  • My macbook unibody screen has vertical black triangles on the bottom of the screen. Does anyone know if this is fixable, or do I need to purchase a new screen?

Recently, I started my computer and black triangles appeared on the bottom of my Macbook unibody screen.  I restarted several times (tried the command + option + p + r trick). Does anyone know what could be wrong?

It can be fixed by Apple, some authorized Apple repair shops, or third-party repair shops.
Apple actually replaces your iPod with a refurbished iPod and the price will depend on what model you have. Others will repair your iPod and the prices tend to be lower.
Apple prices are here: Service Answer Center - iPod

  • Black line on the dock

    Hi All,
I have an iMac 27'' (late 2013) that I have just updated to Yosemite. All well and smooth, although the iMac seems a bit slower at startup...
The only strange occurrence is a black line, about 1cm long, that I see on the right hand-side of the dock, just below the downloads and the trash folders:
I can find no information about this - is it some feature of Yosemite I still cannot understand, or something I should worry about?
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Beppe

    Try restarting the Dock.
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    Launch Terminal.
Wait until the $ sign appears .
    Enter the command  killall Dock
Press the Enter key on the keyboard. Wait until the prompt shows up.
    Quit Terminal.

  • Every once in a while when I open my mail or a page I get nothing but strange lines of symbols.  Many of the symbols are black triangles with question marks in the center.  I completely reset it like new, but problem still exists

Every once in a while when I open my mail or open a page I get lines of strange symbols like black triangles with question marks in the center.  I have reset the ipad2 to new condition but the problem still exists.

A reset does not make tthe iPad "like new."
First, let's ensure that we agree on just what is a Reset...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • When I open Firefox it just says firefox on the upper left corner and apperas to be open on the dock but there are no windows anywhere.HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One day randomly for no reason whatsoever, I opened up firefox on my mac and it just said firefox on the upper left as if it was open. the little upside down triangle appeared below the icon on the dock, like it was open. However, there are no windows anywhere. I click file and new window and nothing.
I right click the firefox icon on the dock and it says that there windows for example, my home page, but there is NOTHING.
I uninstalled and reinstalled and it keeps doing the same thing.
Your website has NO SUPPORT whatsoever and it has taken me a half hour clicking around to get to this portion where I can write what the issue is and no one will ever probably see this so whats the point. I guess I'm stuck with fucking safari now.
Firefox had been working great up to this point, I literally opened it the other day and this happened just completely random.

    Hello,
Sorry you are frustrated. If you have improvements you would like to make, you can file them to the [[Suggestion Box]] and the Firefox logo in the top left with upside down arrow is the Firefox button containing menu items. Try a clean reinstall as instructed below to see if it resolved your issue.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • My secondary monitor flashes and blacks out after the 10.7 install.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have installed 10.7 and the secondary monitor flashes and blacks out.  I downgraded back to 10.6 and the problem went away.  I reinstalled 10.7 and the same problem happened again.  The monitor blacks in and out especially when the pointer is placed in the dock area, but it still happens all the time.  My secondary monitor is a ViewSonic 22 inch that is connected to a DVI to display adapter.  Any solutions??
    Thanks

Talked to AppleCare and it's most likely the fact that my MacBook has 3.0 USB ports and my non official charging cable can't support that. So yeah, I'll try a new cable, hopefully that's the fix.

  • I restarted my mac and many apps and files disappeared. It's like it booted to a state several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?

It's like it booted to a state it was in several months ago. My CS 5 apps are not in the dock or applications folder. Has this ever happened before and what can I do?
The files on my desktop are not the ones that were there when I shut down. It's like it's gone back in time.
My display's power supply got fried (I think) in a power outage so I bought a new one. However, every time I restart the display usually stays black. I have found I need to keep rebooting until it kicks in and starts working. I unplug everything, wait a while (a few minutes to overnight) and try booting again.
This last time the display finally came on but I'm faced with this problem. I used to use time machine, but I deleted everything and disabled it a couple months ago or more so I'm at aloss as to why the mac is booting into the state it was in sevearl months ago.
What could I have done to cause this? Has this ever happened to anyone else and is there a solution?
Note: I did a search for a file I knew was created today. I found it and it showed that it was a file I had saved on the desktop this morning--even though that file's icon is not appearing on the desktop now.
I did a search for photoshop and saw my CS5 version listed.
However, I did a couple more searches and these files no longer appear in the search. I don't know if they're there or not. This is bizarre!
    I'm on a Mac Pro, 10.6.2.

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • HT4623 After installing the above mentioned update, my ipad will no longer turn on. I have just a black screen with the apple logo when I attach it to a power source.  Anyone else having this problem, please advise on how to fix.

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

  • I have ? marks on the dock on my eMac now ++

    Hi,
My eMac had been running a bit slow but also my keyboard may odd sounds (clicking) and typed very slow and I could not open folders or even .pdf files on my desk top, I did make adjustments under System preferences under keyboard and mouse (delay etc) some how that got corrupted and that seems to have corrected it
    My eMac specs=
(eMac 1.25 ghz 1GB ram 80GB HD (all stock from Apple Education Store) and running
    OSX 10.3.9)
I ran Disk Warrior , no change and no major issues reported (other than may have been repaired) , I ran applejack (twice)ran Disk utility to verify and then repair permissions and then applejack AUTO for a deeper run (?thats when the ? marks on the dock showed up (when You move the mouse over the ? mark it identifies what it is and when you hold the mouse down over the ? mark it says on all three of their names and to look in finder(may not be the exact term)The ? mark items are WMV player (found it using file find) , other two are IDVD and iMovie HD (using file find I could not locate as a application itself, most (using DVD and Movie under two file find (individual) search's (results= were
in the library as pkg or mpkg , I am running Omni Disk Warrior now to see if the show up, I did locate DVD player (my eMac has a CD-RW and DVD reader not a super-drive so I can not burn DVD's but baffled as to what is transpiring (I have the Ilife install install disks if needed that came with the eMac and the Operating system disks and the utility disks that came either with the eMac or with the Apple Care that I purchased. (*Note this eMac has a replaced logic board
it did fail (under warranty) and was in that serial number , time frame where the boards failed regularly, mine just went black screen one day, sure I would like a new computer but I am not in the market nor $$ ready (I hope they cut the Imac prices down but thats wishful thinking) (never know)
    * One Thought (though I did not make these applications/files such is ? invisible files (got that way some how? ) One other thing is in the very beginning fairly large symbols would show up on the screen at random (one frequent one looked like
a square root symbol or a division like symbol (though I was not hitting any odd combo of keys etc nor do I see anything like them on the eMac keyboard
has any one had this issue? or parts of it..ANY input would be greatly apprecited
    Thanks

    Hi,
(I guess I could have edited my original post but I found this (where else but Help on the toolbar and used "dock question" as my search tearm and this came back (as the first on the list)
The Dock contains a question mark icon (this was the title) and below the answer (only thing (unless I am misinterpreting the answer) is I did not delete the applications) and I am he sole user of this computer, we have 3 Mac's and one HP PC in the house on a network)
Omni Disk Sweaper did not find Imovie HD or IDVD (fragments yes and a .pkg (? installer
    but in library/receipts)
I can do below but I need to reinstall fro the Ilife desk or ? use Subrasoft File Salvage which we have but ? not sure if the license is expired etc.
If you delete an application or document that has an icon in the Dock, the
Dock icon changes to a question mark.
To remove the question mark icon:
    Drag it from the Dock.
To add a new item to the Dock, locate the item and drag its icon to the
    Dock.
    Thanks

  • How do I stop the Dock from jumping to a new screen?

I work on a 13" MBP Retina with a cinema display. For ease of my workflow, I have the my screen arrangement with my laptop below the cinema display with the laptop as the main screen. With the new Mavericks OS the dock now randomly jumps to the Cinema display, but I don't want it to. Does anyone no how to keep the Dock itself from switching screens? I don't see anything in the Dock or Monitor preferences. The image below shows how I work. The Dock is actually in the preferred location in the pic.
Also… see that little purple shrimp looking image in the lower right-hand corner by the black cord? That now appears in all of the pics I take with my iPhone 5. Anyone know how to get rid of it. I have cleaned my lens.

In short, I do not know the answer to your question.  However, I also get that exact same purple shrimp thing on all of my photos.  At first I thought there was a problem with my lens (damage perhaps), but the fact that you have the exact same colour and similarly shaped blemish suggests otherwise.  Also note the black "smudges" on this photo of a white sheet of paper.

  • Mail Disappearing via Black Triangle

I have a Mac Mini G4 and my Mail is acting weird. Next to each of my 2 accounts in my Drafts folder I have a black triangle, when I click on the triangle it turns down however, nothing shows up in the Drafts folder. I have saved several drafts but they don't show up but if I do a search I can find them.
    Please help

    Restart your mac:
Safe Boot: Hold down the shift key after the chime until the Apple logo appears and the gear is moving.
It will take awhile but you will be asked to login.
Go to your Applications folder> Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
In the left side column, highlight your drive and repair permissions.( button down below).
    From BDAqua:
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this folder & file to the Desktop then reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
    Move to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Mail will ask to import your messages. If all goes well and Mail is fixed trash the files on the desktop.
