Black turning to Gray

Hello,
When I save my illustrator file as an EPS and run it through Distiller to convert to a PDF it's changing my black to a dark gray. I have a jpeg image that the black is bumping up to and it no longer matches. What am I going wrong?
I am working in CS3
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Cheers,
Sandi

Are you sure you're saving the pdf as RGB? You shouldn't even have "register" as an option in an RGB file, since registration is only used to register inks on paper. It sounds possibly like the "gray" is just the overprint preview of black in a cmyk pdf. Is overprint preview turned on? In a file intended to print as ink on paper, this option is used to reveal where overprinting different inks will create a darker appearance than a blank-ink-only option. (This can be a problem on press when done unintentionally). This is why "register" shows up darker than black only, since it's showing that overprinting multiple inks will create a darker, more saturated black than blank ink alone.
If this is for web, it will need to be RGB.

  • Black ink faded/Gray when printing with HP Envy 5530

    When printing with my new HP Envy 5530 the black ink looks gray or faded.  I tested the color and this prints dark and clear.  I have power cycled, plugged into different power outlets and re-inserted the cartridge.  Any thoughts...or could it just be a "bum" cartridge?
    Thanks in Advance for your help...

    Howdy. After tinkering around with my Envy having the same issue, I found out that after replacing my black cartridge because it was low, I was having the same issue.
    Turns out the color cartridge will simulate a black in an to preserve both the tri color cartridge and the black cartridge for as long as possible, which is why even if you've never printed any color, both your cartridges should be low. Once the color cartridge starts getting low, the printer doesn't have a sensor to realize which of the tri color is mixing in the most, so it continues to mix it in either way.
    I was having this issue where I would print one page and it would be okay and then any page following would slowly look worse.
    Long story short, just print without the color cartridge in and you shouldn't have the issue unless your black is really low. Replacing that should fix it overall though.

  • Make a black/white photo into tiny black dots, no grays

    Hello,
    I want to turn a gray-scale photo into pure black/white using tiny dots. So the dots are the shading. It's important that it is only black and white and retains it's detail. I have photoshop elements 2.0
    Someone actually came up with the answer for me about a year ago, but I now forget how and the thread seems to have disappeared. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Try Image > Mode > Bitmap

  • Why does black turn grey when creating a pdf from InDesign CS5??

    Why do blacks turn to grey when I create/export a pdf from InDesign CS5?

    Unfortunately, things like this are rarely glitchy little programming errors but deep, by-design, problems with using colour management. Usually you are getting exactly what you asked for, just not what you want, and the more colour management options there are, the more likely this is.
    There are many possible causes, but one of the easiest to do is and hardest to spot is applying a CMYK profile in InDesign export, and a different one through Photoshop settings. This is actually demanding that colours be converted for the worst! Since your print workflow will be different, a work-around of rich black is likely to make things worse.
    So the first thing to check is whether the colours you indended made it to the PDF, indeed. Output Preview is the first tool to use (as well as inspecting plates, you can hover over points to check the colour mix).
    Also, go to your PDF export under the "Output" tab which includes colour and PDF/X. Either send a screen shot, or read off all of the the settings there.

  • In Acrobat, I wrote a script to turn fields gray if a checkbox was checked. How can I get it to reset to white (or clear) when the reset form button is clicked?

    In Acrobat, I wrote a script to turn fields gray if a checkbox was checked. How can I get it to reset to white (or clear) when the reset form button is clicked?

    Thank you so much for your reply . . . but . . . I should have shared my original script with you -- it was a little more complicated than I led you to believer. I was triggering a group of text fields to become disabled as well as gray. Below is the original script so that when the checkbox is checked, it causes several "Co" fields to be disabled and gray.
    // Mouse Up script for check box
    // If checked, certain fields should be disabled
    var f_prefix = "Co";
    // Get a reference to all of the "Co" fields
    var f = getField(f_prefix);
    // Reset the Co fields
    resetForm([f_prefix]);
    if (event.target.value === "Off") {
        // Enable the Co fields
        f.readonly = false;
        f.fillColor = color.transparent;
    } else {
        // Disable the Co fields
        f.readonly = true;
        f.fillColor = color.gray;
    To recap -- my goal is to get those gray fields to revert to transparent if the form is reset. I'm willing to create my own custom "Reset Form" button but I'm not sure I understand how that would look. Wouldn't it be quite lengthy? I think I'm having a brain freeze -- can't figure it out!

  • Why are transparent parts of ID file turning to gray in PDF?

    The transparent parts of my InDesign files are going to gray boxes (x-ray looking) around them.  I have done hundreds, if not thousands of PDF's from ID without an issue and all of a sudden this is happening. Though I have already figured out and used a jpeg work-around for now, I am still searching for the answer as to WHY this is happening all of a sudden, without any updates or changes on my end. WHY??? Can anyone else can shed a light on this?  Thanks.

    I guess the question is, has a recent automatic update in Adobe software (this happens in Illustrator CS5.5, too) created a change in how PDF's are processed through their software?  Nothing I have done is different or has been reset...have used all of the software since it's creation, so I'm not a novice whatsoever.  It appears that any shape that is created using the transparency/gradient feature in the software turns to gray in the PDF's when using the save as PDF internal software feature in every configuration (then opens in Acrobat Pro...not Apple Preview, which has it's issues).  This has nothing to do with jpegs or anything else that is placed in the file (my reference to jpegs in my question is how I wound up saving the original file so everything would be flattened).  This work around is not a solution for me.b I am trying to find out if I am stuck with this because of Adobe software updates or something changed recently.  I am not the only person that has posted this issue on the web, but wanted to go straight to Adobe experts to see if anyone could shed any light on it.  Thanks for your time.

  • Preview screen and all black turned to green

    Hello, so far I've been more than happy with my Adobe production suite. However today something funky is going on. I have a new macbook pro running lion, and have made several videos successfully. I'm currently traveling and opened my laptop in the airport terminal to do some editing and first noticed the default preview screen was green, when it's normally black. I started to play through some video and the darkest sports were also turning green. All black turned green. This hasn't happened before. Did my computer get bumped too hard or is this something fixable? If chicago-o'hare offered free internet id post a screen shot.. ill try when I get home. Any leads on this matter would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • TS1559 wifi wont turn on grayed out

    My wifi wont turn on grayed out or dim
    any suggestions

    Use this article: support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
    Follow all of the troubleshooting steps.  You can even try restoring the device as new: support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
    If the wi-fi remains greyed out, your device needs service.
    If within warranty, it should be free.
    If not, it will probably cost $199 USD + tax.

  • Black turns White in PDF

    I am using Adobe Illustrator 11.0.0 (MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.3) to lay out a sheet that shows a painting with calligraphy on top. The painting was photographed and saved as Photoshop RGB; the calligraphy is a scan of black ink calligraphy on white paper, with the white background erased to be transparent and saved as Photoshop graytone. The painting was saved as a JPEG, the calligraphy was saved as a PSD file.
    The layout is fine. The black calligraphy lays on top of the colored painting. The strange thing is, in the thumbnail of the AI file (as seen in the Finder), the calligraphy shows up as white, not black. And, when I save the AI file as a PDF, the calligraphy also turns from black to white.
    Any idea what is going wrong?
    Marc

    Try saving your painting image as rgb psd or tif and black calligraphy as grayscale psd (make sure the image mode is not cmyk or rgb), or make the calligraphy a bitmap (black and white/ no grays)
    Set the black to overprint is another thing that you could try. But beware that if you overprint 100% black objects can be visible through the black, so make your black out of 40% cyan and 100% black.

  • Layer mask is turning skin Gray

    I have used the same basic skin retouching method for hundreds of pictures. Usually I end up with very nice, natural looking skin.  Today, the same technique is turning the skin gray on any picture I attempt to use it on. I cannot figure out why.  Essentially, I copy the background layer.  I do my spot healing on this layer. When I'm through, I make 3 more layers.  On the first, I use the Median filter. On the second, I use a high pass filter.  Then on the 3rd, I add I layer mask, painting in black, and go over the skin. It is always gray on the mask.  I then go back and reduce the opacity of the high pass and median layers.  Usually I end up with smoother, but natural skin and it's normal color.  Today, every time I attempt to do this, the skin stays a muted gray.  I cannot figure out why.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be different that I'm not noticing?  Thanks.

    Figured it out finally.  For some reason the high pass kept slipping out of overlay mode into normal mode.  Problem solved.

  • Black type goes gray

    I'm having a problem with quality in the title tool.
    Can someone try this experiment to see if you see the same result?
    Create a 1080p23.976 sequence on the first layer put full white matte. then create a new title to put on track 2.
    The title should be 24 size, arial and full black. Type something and look at the type in the title tool. It should look black.
    Then exit out of the title tool and look at the type superimposed on the timeline. In my situation it looks gray. This is true on the computer display and also my broadcast monitor. If I re-enter the title tool it looks black again.
    Do other people see this?
    I first started noticing issues with type when I move a project from FCP 7 to PP CC 2014. The small type in FCP 7 (rendered out) looked sharper and more readable compared to the same setup in PP CC 2014

    Here is a sample screen grab showing you the difference I am seeing. (Mid 2010 Mac Pro)
    The line on the top has a white background created in the title tool the line on the bottom has the background turned off is on layer two of the timeline.

  • Strange distorted colours on my ibook screen, blacks turn to reds, help!

    Hello!
    I am posting my display problem here so that i don't have to spend unnecessary money on it. So the problem began 3 days ago when i started my ibook, the apple logo that usually is the center of a blue screen, was a bit grey with some red highlights and the blue ceased to be blue to turn to purple... when it boots it shows a lot of red shades all in a distroted form, the black colour no longer exists and was turned into red, i also have a pattern of red diagonal lines all over the display... what can this be? i still haven't done anything, what do you recommend me to do?
    Thank you very much!

    Sounds like it's probably a defect in the video controller.
    Are you still under warranty? If so, get it in for repair.
    If not, check to see if you qualify for a free repair under this program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
    If so, take it in for inspection, and request service under this program.
    I believe that this extension only covers G3 iBooks. So, if you have a G4, you're probably going to have to rely on warranty coverage.
    If you are not covered under warranty or the extension program, then you'll probably be looking at paying for a new logic board unless they can find a simple problem.
    But, it sounds like it's the video controller to me. This is integrated in the main logic board. So, it's going to require replacing the entire logic board.
    The question is: Can you get it done free or will you have to pay for it.
    Check to see if you qualify for the free repair.
    I hope this helps.

  • Songs won't show up black (they're gray) when ipod connected to iTunes

    When I used to connect my iPod to the computer, the songs would show up as black in the "My Device" section. Now, however, they're showing up as gray. So, where I used to be able to click on one of the songs within "My Device" to play that song, now I have to play it from the Library. I had to reset the iPod (it started showing garbled German...yeah, that's right, garbled German)and, ever since then, it's been doing the aforementioned black/gray thing.
    I can use the iPod fine when it's not plugged into the computer, but I'm stumped about how--and why--it has changed. Thanks, kids.

    Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
    Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
    Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

I hook it right up to my computer and see that the little battery pops up on the screen of the iphone and its red, but continues to charge. I walk away for 10 minutes, come back, and its a black screen. I turn it on, the little apple logo pops up, im thinking HA we have lift off! But no, it shuts right back off. I've turned it on and reset the thing, i've hooked up my old ladys iphone to make sure everything is working properly, chords, usb ports, etc. Everything is working perfectly but my new iphone. It continues to turn on and show the logo, but shuts down 30-40 seconds later. What do i do??? Please help!!!!
