Black Update - Can't Make Calls when transferring ...

Since the Black Update was installed on my Nokia Lumia 521 in early April 2014, I cannot make calls when traveling from one cell coverage area to another on T-mobile's network without shutting the phone off and restarting.  
I've replaced 3 phones, a SIM card, done multiple soft and hard resets and done a system recovery through a USB direct connection to the computer, all to no avail.  I suspect that this Black Update also caused my battery to prematurely malfunction and fail.
I have been in contact with T-mobile advanced support multiple times.  I've contacted Nokia Technical Support, who did not acknowledge the problem, but directed me to do the Software Recovery Tool and USB installation, which I have done several times.
I found another user who had this same issue in the www.wpcentral.com forum.
This appears to be a Black Update software issue and not a phone hardware or T-mobile network issue.  I had no problems whatsoever with the Amber Update.  I have had the phone since August 2013.
I have no problems in multiple coverage areas with a Google Nexus 4 or a BlackBerry 8900.
Please advise how to fix the problem.

Here, we are an end-user-to-end-user discussion board, all we can provide it solve usual pitfalls and create workarounds. For a network issue like yours, I recommend to keep-up with T-Mobile USA because they are the only one how are able to diagnose this and they have channels to report this to Nokia. Every other support channel won’t be as good as them. If they refuse to help, you have to find another Nokia Lumia 521 with Lumia Black, and test your subscription with his device.

    Well, ended up calling Apple Support, tried many things, no luck; the rep had me to do a backup on my MBP, then a fresh restore.  Just got the call from Apple and everything seems to be working fine on both my phone and my wifes.  Will do tests during the day and find out.

    The same thing is happening with my wife's iPhone 4 and we can't figure it out. When placing a call, the screen freezes and she needs to restart the entire phone.
    She upgraded to 5.01 this morning over the air while it was plugged in. Immediately afterwards, this problem started happening. We've tried restarting the phone several times and plugged in to iTunes but there's nothing she can do do to fix it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    This might sound silly but how does one use the phone to make calls when it is in the dock?  Is there such a thing as an on-screen dialler or some such device to help dial the number.  I just have the headphone and mic jack - that is fine.  Just need a dialler. Thanks.

    If you're using a G3, you can't.
    If you're using a G4 or G5, check sites such as Amazon or eBay for a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
    If you're using an Intel Mac, skip 10.5 and buy 10.6 from the online Apple Store.

Does itunes do that when i backed up the rest of the stuff on my phone?

    Back it up in iTunes! Just make a backup of the entire device but make sure you check sync contacts and the option to add contacts from phone to address book on computer.

    I had the same problem three days ago and now it is solved I was advised to try the following:
    Go to settings - General - Date & Time - switch off the "Set Automatically" option and adjust the time zone manually.

    Did you try calling oyur ISP to see if it's something on their end?  I know when I was on dial up years ago I had to change to a different number once in my area as something was wrong with the one I had always used to dial into AOL, maybe that's it.  Mary

    Can not make call on Face time. Mac book pro with mountain lion. Camera ok, face time starts fine, validates apple id ok. Showes list of contacts. when I select one nothing happens!! Face time is on, apple id is ok wi fi is fine (verified with lion macbook pro), also can not access face time preferences, it shows grey????

    How is it a security breach? You're free to turn off lock screen notifications for the phone app so that no one can do that.... even if they can, they can only call the number that called you... nothing else. (well, except for 900 or whatever the emergency services number is where you are, but that's required by law).

    I've had a Skype Unlimited World subscription for several years, a recurring $9.99/monthly payment. About a week ago I tried to make a call on my mobile and got the message saying 'Skype Premuim doesn't allow calls to phones, that I would need to buy Skype credit', etc....
    Hmmm...what the heck is going on?
    i checked my emails to see if a late May 'Your purchase has been delivered' mail had come in, and no, it hadn't. Hmmm...more wondering about what's going on. I did not receive any messages informing me of changes to my subscription, changes to Skype or changes to Skype Premium. i went to my account page at Skype to see that Skype Premium was active, but that $0.00 had been charged in late May. Hmmm....what's up with that?
    I did read the 'Skype Premium' is changing, group video calls are free', whatever, but it still was not clear about being able make calls to phones, and that's all I've ever needed of Skype for the past couple years. i want to continue having what I had. And I have no interest in group videos call anyway.
    What to do? There is no one to call and talk with, but I did have a 'chat session' with a support rep (automated?) who was not able to quite understand my concerns. it ended with the chat rep telling me I'd have Skype Premuim for free until next January. I did tell the chat rep that I just wanted to be able to make calls, that group video was of no interest to me, and she (chat rep had a female name) told me everything was fine, that i would be able to make calls as I had been doing for a few years now. 
    OK, I'm back on, right? At least that's what my thinking was. So yesterday i tried to make calls, and much to my dismay, there was the same message...'Skype Premuim doesn't allow calls to phones, you will need to buy Skype credit'....AARGH.
    So that's it? You can not make calls to phones with Skype Premuim? Or you can, but Skype is having issued sorting it out? Would someone here be able to clarify?
    I don't see any use for me of a Skype Premium account if I can't make calls to phones.
    I see the world subscription is now $13.99 a month. I would have just preferred they tell me the subscription price was increasing, instead of having to go through this whole mess to find out things have changed. Certainly they should send messages to inform customers that changes have been made instead of having to dig around and find out on their own.

    You need to call your cellular carrier and get this sorted out. No one here can help you.

    you can't make calls, but if its supported, you can use facetime. another alternative is skype, but you wont be able to make actual phone calls from your ipad
