Black video, sound OK

When I add a quicktime move to an iWeb movie page template the movie video is black, but it plays the sound OK. The inspector gives the correct info on it.
I can copy the movie from the iWeb page to the clipboard and then paste it into QT player and it plays A and V just fine.
This is true for all quicktime movies on all kinds of movie templates.
iWeb 2.0 (8A336), QT 7.2, OS 10.4.10, dual G5, 2GHz.
Bug, or feature?

You'd have to find out what codecs are being used in the video file. Apparently the video one is not being supported by QuickTime but the audio portion is? If you go to QuickTime Player menu > movie inspector it should show what codecs are being used. If you want to post them back and what ext. is being used in the file, someone here may have further info.
Also as an example, DivX format is not supported by QuickTime for windows, yet it is with QT for Mac. And what you describe with black screen for video, but having audio, is exactly what I've seen in the past with in this particular format. I'm not saying with certainty the file you have is a DivX.

  • Pre 9: black video, only sound.

I used to use premiere many years ago, but this newest version is totally different from what i've used in the past, so bear with me.
here's my problem: When editing my video, I can cut and rearange clips pretty easily, everything seems to be working fine, however when i go to render the final product, or apply any sort of effects (i'm trying to keep my edits simple for now, but in the future i'm going to need to be able to green screen, color correct, and other effects) I end up with a black video and only audio. this loss is permanetly part of the project, even if i re-load another save. (edit: never mind this bit, i can re-load just fine) it seems to only occur when i have a lot of clips, since if i just apply filters or render raw footage it seems to work just fine.
my machine, though certainly not top of the line is pretty respectable, Its only a few months old and will play any game with full graphics settings (i'm a gamer so this is my best point of reference, I know video editing can be more taxing) specs:
    AMD phenom X4 3.4 ghz
    4 gigs of ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 (with latest drivers, i updated them about 20 minutes ago)
    windows 7 64 bit
I don't really know much about video files (there's so many variations!) so here is the properties window:
type of file: Movie Clip (.MPG)
I've tried a few different presets with this file and all of them get the same results. I tried standard dv 48hz, whatever the default was, and the standard 48hz under the hard drive (since it mentioned sony cameras and that's the brand i'm using)
I'm really at a loss of what to do, but i would be happy to provide any further info if you think you could help me.

Thanks for the help guys. I got the project set up correctly, and all seems to be in order. I also think there may have been issues with converting when rendering the final product, but I could be wrong on that.
also thanks for the tip on mpeg and GOP, i have noticed in the past that editing files from this camera can lead to the sound and video getting out of sync. oh and to answer your question, it's just a simple sony point-and-shoot that i was editing for this particular footage, though I also have a flip (and I did see that there are settings for my flip)

  • Quicktime 7.5 - Black Video and no Audio - Using Windows Vista

    Hello,
I tried asking this, but I don't think I was clear enough.
Current Computer - Dell Inspiron, Quad Core, 4gig Ram, < 1yr old.
    Running OS - Vista Home
Up until recently Quicktime worked fine, then all of the sudden the video is gone.
The audio is still there however.
What I have done to try to resolve -
    1) Reviewed previous topics and tried the following -
    a) update Preferences to Safe Mode (That made a white stripe in the black screen)
    b) Update preferences to remove Direct 3D video acceleration, nothing changed
    2) Reinstall Quicktime 7.5 - No change, still shows BLACK video and will play audio
    3) Reinstall Itunes with Quicktime - No change still shows BLACK video and will play audio
Thank you for any help you can provide!

I have found a temporary workaround for this. I can open the indeo 5.1 formatted avi's in another program (either fade to black or virtualdub) and change/convert to another indeo codec called IYUV (as opposed to IV50) and while it renders a much larger avi file, those DO open in Quicktime, and when I export to convert this larger avi into a MOV file, it is about the same file size in the end product as the ones I render from the same 5.1 avi on the other computer. Knowing I can do this as needed saves me having to re-render all 400 or so of my avi's to another codec or lose them.
I STILL think there is a fix out there that is related to somehow telling the registry to recognize the ir50_32.qtx codec the same as I finally did to get Windows MP to play these files, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
Progress is supposed to make these files SMALLER with BETTER quality, but all I see so far with these "new improved" codecs is bigger files and no better (or even worse) image/sound quality. I'll change to more "modern" codecs when they show me one that is an actual improvement over the old one based on this criteria. And AVI remains the ONLY file format that can be extensively modified and edited artistically (zoom, crop, add watermarks and color filters and special effects). Apple is shooting themselves in the foot if they make us unable to open our AVIs in the pro version so we can continue to use QT Players on our web pages. I LIKE the mov finished product for both file size and quality, and I am happy to drive new customers to them as long as they let me convert my files in QT Pro. When I can't any longer, I'll convert every single website on all my websites player to Flash.

  • Digital Cinema Desktop is black with sound

    Hi,
I've been testing some DVCPro HD clips - 720 at 24p - on my G4 Powerbook to see how FCP will perform. Editing operations seems smooth and work fine, but when I try Digital Cinema Desktop Preview, the screen goes black, and I just hear the audio.
Regular DV clips work fine. According to this doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93797
    DVCPro HD should be supported.
I am running FCP 5.04, 10.39, QT 7.1 on a G4 with a FW800 external HD. I have tried all combinations of using the laptop screen with/without an external monitor, with just the external monitor, and sending the DCD output to one or the other - same thing in all cases: black with sound. BTW, "Single frame" works fine, just not "All frames."
    Any advice/info is appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Powerbok G4 15" (FW800)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   External FW 800 HD

Hi x, thanks for the response. I don't have access to another Mac with FCP on it yet, but I did go through this: upgraded to 10.4.5 (bought 10.4.3 and then ran the combined update). Same symptoms. Reinstalled QT (yes - I meant .01) to 7.04. Reinstalled FCP. Ran the 7.01 reisntaller. Updated to 7.04 again....
AT each step, I tested the DCD behavior. The same each time... I did this with a regular clip, and also a rendered circle generated in FCP itself (figuring that would be a "pure" file.)
BUT, I found out something: If I set the zoom in the canvas to something higher than "fit to window" (so part of the image is cropped in the canvas) then, a still image shows up on the DCD screen. So, the DCD behavior on my PB is, with DCD on for "all frames", and the canvas set at any setting that lets me see the whole image, playback is black on DCD and frozen in the Canvas. With DCD off, Canvas playback is fine. With DCD on, and Canvas zoomed (or window resized) so part of the image is croppped, both DCD and Canvas freeze or stutter, but DCD is not black. And again, regular SD DV is perfect always.
So, I am thinking that my PB's video card is not up to handling the HD (DVCPro HD 720 24p)using DCD.
    Oh well...

  • Black video looks "splotchy"...

Hello all, new owner of a gorgeous new 23" ACD... most everything looks to be ok so far. No dead pixels and only a slight yellowish vignetting on the edges... but not too bad. So I pop in a DVD and when the screen goes completely black, well, things don't look so good. The black video turns uneven and splotchy. It's mainly located around the edges and corners, but even dips into the center quite a bit.
Is this normal? Is it supposed to do this? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Josh

I would recommend highly to exchange it if the splotches are quite noticable while watching a movie. I don't understand what's up with the 23" cinema display. Apple has addressed (quietly) the color problems but it doesn't seem perfectly manufactured, but most LCD's are not anyway. The Dell 24" seems to get good reviews for the most part but it's main complaint that I have been reading is it has an annoying high pitched sound after it warms up. People have exchnaged it and ended up with a refurb from Dell and still have the same issues.
So don't get too caught up with the negatives that you read about the Apple 23" display, most LCD's larger than 17" seem to be not too perfect, in fact including dead pixels all LCD's have their issues.
If you live too far geographically to exchange your screen then keep it if the viewing is comfortable overall.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CC outputs black video

I've been having problems with AME for quite some time, such that I don't even use it except for very short videos.  If I export video in AME, the first half is good, but the second half is black video only.  If I export directly from Premiere Pro, all is well every time.  It's most frustrating to be paying for a product monthly that does not work, so please overlook my frustration.   Has anyone successfully gotten a discount from Adobe for the failure of software to work as advertised?
Here's another issue I have: there is no way to file a bug for AME as it is not available in the drop down list on Adobe's support site. (How is that even possible?)  I would have reported a bug long ago if this was available.
Has anyone seen this?  I've tried many different things the last few weeks but have given up using AME altogether.  This week I have a little time to troubleshoot.

Ask in the AME/ Premiere forum and by all means provide some solid technical info - system specs, sequence settings, render settings, footage used. Nobody can help you without that.

  • Video sound to TV won't run through headphones

    Hi,
I have my stereo and TV hooked up to a MacMini (the 2009 slim metal one with the optical drive).  I have a headphone splitter attched to the headphones jack going to the TV and the stereo.  The Mini is hooked up to the TV with a mini DP connector to a DVI-to-HDMI cable (but this same thing happens with a regular DVI cable).  With my old 2,1 Mini that was fine since everything ran through the headphones.
Now I want to do the same thing but iTunes I can't get the video to run through the headphones.  The only way I get sound to the TV is to run it through the HDMI output (even when using the mini DP).  But then I have to manually change the sound output.
    Is it possible to either:
    1. Have iTunes run out the headphones jack and everything else run out the HDMI?  or
    2. Have everything run out the headphones output?

    Info to add:
When any digital video is plugged into the Mini, the video sound only works when it's set to HDMI.
To get sound to my stereo I have to switch it to headphones.  Even though I have a connector going from the headphone jack to the DVI audio input on my TV, there's no sound in headphone mode.
I tried an external USB sound card and had the same problem.  Just instead of headphones it was the USB soundcard.
    Maybe it's my TV...

  • Video/Sound delay with AppleTV on higher resolutions

I have a new Sony 55" RP SXRD HD TV (1080p max res), and just hooked up my AppleTV today. After syncing it with most of my video library and some of my music library, I tested the video appearance. My initial setting was 1080i, and I experienced major video/sound synchronization delays (similar to older DVD players where you'd hear what the person was saying 5-8 seconds before they said it on screen). This drove me nuts, so I switched down to 720p res, and while the movies played okay, the TV Shows and the Music Videos left much to be desired, and still had the same synchronization problems. To remove these issues, I finally changed the res down to 420p, but now, when I watch pretty much anything (photos, album art, TV Shows, Music Videos, and Movies), the resolution is horrible, and pixelates on my TV.
I'm trying to pinpoint this to find out if it's the TV, the connection (HDMI), or the AppleTV. Can anyone offer some advice on what to look for, what might cause this issue, and how I could fix it? Thanks so much in advance!
    AppleTV   Windows XP
      Windows XP

Sounds to me like it's a problem with upscaler. Does the Apple TV upscale? If it does, then it's the upscaler in the Apple TV and is probably a software problem that can be fixed with a firmware update. But it's weird that if it's a consistent problem with the Apple TV upscaler that these forums aren't just soaked in complaints about it. Could be only a problem with really large, say 46" or greater TVs -- that might explain the low number of complaints.
If the Apple TV doesn't upscale, then it's the upscaler in your HDTV. Prior to about six months ago, when all HDTVs got good upscaler chipsets, some HDTVs, especially the older, larger models, had absolute trash upscaler chipsets -- even the expensive quality brand models got some bad upscalers. All kinds of problems from all input sources, but not always with every device. How old is your HDTV?
For your sake, I hope it's an Apple TV upscaler problem with larger dimensioned HDTVs, as that Apple can fix for free with a firmware update. Next best choice is your terrible upscaler chipset in your HDTV supports firmware upgrades via USB or network cable and there is a firmware update out that fixes your HDTV's upscaler problems. Because the final, worst alternative, if there is no update for your HDTV available, or your model doesn't support firmware updates, it's the really bad option: drop another couple grand or more for a new HDTV of the same large dimensions.

  • Black video thumbnails in iPhoto (Mavericks)

    Hello everyone.
I have Mavericks on a late 2012 Macbook Pro running iPhoto 9.5.1.
I recently noticed that rough a third of my videos were displaying thumbnails that are just black.  I freaked for a second, thinking the movie files were gone or something but thankfull the video files are still there and play just fine.
Still it would be nice to see that the video thumbnail images are rather than just black rectangles, right?
I tried all the different iPhoto rebuilding options (which takes a heckuva long time! ... then purchased iPhoto Library Manager and attempted some rebuild options using that with no luck.
Wondering if anyone has had this issue too and/or solved it?
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I triple checked a handful of the video files and they aren't exhibiting black at the start.
    How I checked:
    - Select black video thumbnail image
    - Press space bar (to "zoom" and begin playing video"
    - Stop video playback at approx. five seconds in (video counter reads 00:00:05)
    - Rewind "playhead" to very start of video so that the counter reads 00:00:00 and there is definately an image / content being displayed (e.g. is not black)
See attached screen shot with playhead at 00:00:00

  • Video Sound through Express?

I tried searching this forum, but couldn't find any answers. I am using iTunes connected via Airport Express to my home stereo. It plays music fine, but why doesn't it also stream sound for videos through Airport Express? Is there any way to do this? Video sound only comes through my PowerBook speakers.
    Thanks for any help.
    Rick

No I haven't tried that, but will. I did see in Apple's Knowledge base that for some unexplained reason movie audio does not play through iTunes to Express. I did try Airfoil, but the syncing is way off. If anyone knows how to fix that it would seem to be a good solution.

  • Video sound over a photo.

Is there a way in iMovie HD to insert a photo between two clips and have the video sound play over the photo without the video.
I want to replace a small section of video footage with a picture, but continue to hear the audio of the video, sort of paste the photo over the video.
    Thanks in advance.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Haloric,
In addition to Ivar's method you could try this.
If the photo already exists in your clip viewer or time line, select it then choose File>Copy. Now position your playhead where you want the photo to appear and choose Advanced>Paste Over at Playhead.
iMovie will automatically extract the video audio to preserve it.
If you don't already have the photo in your clip viewer or time line, you'll need to first bring it in to your project. Then just move it to the clip pane or just select and copy it right in the timeline.
This technique works with video clips too. Useful for a quick cut away to something else.

  • Video sound????

I got my iphone4 alittle over a month ago, right when I got it the first video i took, when i played it back you could barely hear the sound i tried everything but nothing worked so I figured maybe the video sound on the new iphone wasnt good until my friend got hers recently and its clear as day? • How do I create some black video in Final Cut Pro?

I am new to fcp having moved from premiere how do I create some black video in fcp please
    Thanks
    Derek

Drew's right - and another way is to go to the same "film strip" (generator) to the right bottom corner of the middle box (called the Viewer) and select "Matte" > "color". It is grey by default, but in the viewer under Control you can select black. This way of making black will not lay in audio tracks, only black on the V1 - video track, (unless you have select another video track.

  • Embedded Youtube video sound issues HELP!!

    Hello.
    This is my site http://mattpartridgeanimation.com/
In my 'animation' section I'm loading youtube clips to my site using this AS3 script found here.
This all works fine but when i use my buttons created in flash to load the new container_mc, the sound of the old video keeps playing. Does anyone know any AS3 script that will stop the youtube video sound playing when you click to load another video.
I'm pretty new to all this so any help would be great. Cheers

    Hi,
I found the same problem but, according to YouTube AS3 API reference, I solved it with the special function:
    player.destroy();
It works. Just replace "player" with the instance name of your youtube player.
    Quote from the documentation:
You should always call player.destroy() to unload a YouTube player. This function will close the NetStream object and stop additional videos from downloading after the player has been unloaded. If your code contains additional references to the player SWF, you also need to destroy those references separately when you unload the player.
    Best,
    Toz
