Black&White adjustment layer problem

Hi all,
When I try to apply a black&white adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 Ext., I get the dreaded message: "Could not complete yor request because of a program error". This is true for Tiffs and PSDs (8bit multi layered or 8bit flat) but not for jpegs. Is this a bug or a feature? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for you time,
Francois Hendrickx

Could be a hardware acceleration issue with the b&w effect. Turn off OpenGL to verify. also make sure your adjustment layer is not clipped/ masked/ repositioned/ smaller than your comp. Remeber: The adjustment layer merely defines the area to which the effect will be applied, the actula processing still happens on the buffer below it. For anything else we will need more info ansd screenshots. We do not even know what version of AE you are referring to.

  • PS not allowing me to add a Black & White Adjustment layer

    Hi,
    Hope you're well.
There is a photo I've downloaded from the Internet that is by a photographer who shoots in Black & White. However, when I print out the photo it comes out sepia. I tried adding a Black & White Adjustment layer, but when I go to click on the button in the adjustment palette it's grayed out. I've tried this on other photos of the photographer and does it fine.
Any idea what is going on and how it can be resolved? Thanks!

Well, let's assume you are in Grayscale. But just to be sure, open the image and look at the document title bar, it should read something like Gray/8. This indicates your color mode (other modes can be RGB, CMYK, Index and others...). The color settings are found Edit>Color Settings. But don't worry about those for the time being.
Can you give the specs for your printer? Inkjet printers use all colors in printing a grayscale image. Ideally, they do this in percentages that create a neutral tone on the paper. If some of the nozzles are clogged, or if you have wrong choices in the Print Dialog, you will definitely see a color cast. Printing only with black ink will not yield photo-quality results.
Make sure the most recent driver for the printer is installed.
Also, what version of Photoshop on what OS?

  • Black & White Adjustment that retains same Greyscale values (when in Color)

    Hi all,
I noticed that when I apply a simple Black&White Adjustment layer to my colored layers, the 'Greyscale values' either via LAB sliders /HSb brightness changes drastically.:
    http://i57.tinypic.com/16ifm8n.png
eg the L slider for the turquoisy color jumps so much
I've tried the Hue/Saturation & Black&White adjustment layers with default settings. Can someone tell me a quick B&W workaround conversion that adheres as close as possible to sliders values when the adjustment layer is off?  I used it for digital coloring to check my composition 'values' regularly, so complex grayscale conversions would be less preferable. Also, I do not need it to be perfect to human vision, just hopefully adhere roughly to the 'L' or 'B' slider values when the B&W adjustment is turned on/off
    thanks alot!

I believe the tone shift to which you are referring is caused by the B&W adjustment layer as demonstrated here. This is the basic file (Adobe RGB):
Add a duplicate layer and change its Blending Mode to Luminosity. The colors will not change. Then add a Black & White Adjustment Layer and it will modify the resultant color like this:
For a clearer comparison, the image below shows the beginning image with the altered luminosity of the B&W Adjustment layer in the center circle
    (Notice Clipping Mask)
So, the default setting of the sliders that appear in the B&W drop-down menu must be adjusted so that, at the start, this Adjustment layer of the Luminosity does not alter the color. To do that, I had to change the settings to:
    Reds     33
    Yellows 90
    Greens     60
    Cyans     72
    Blues     14
    Magentas 46
You may save these settings as a Preset. so that they do not require resetting each time. The practical application of this is that it allows you to lighten and darken specific colors in a scene without resorting to selections. I have found this to be most useful in landscape images. (I overdid the changes in the sample below for demonstration purposes only.)

  • CS4 Black & White Adjustment - Missing Sliders ?

In CS3 the Black & White Adjustment Layer dialogue offered two sliders for adding a tint. These were Hue and Saturation, and were delightfully easy to use.
In CS4 the Black & White Adjustment Layer non-modal tab does not have these two sliders; instead you have to click on the square called tint which opens up the Select target color: dialogue. OK so hue has a slider, but adjusting the saturation requires entering a figure into a box (or all the arrow key stuff). Not anywhere near as convenient nor intuitive as sliders.
It is possible to regain this flexibility by directly converting the image to Black & White using the Black & White conversion dialogue available from the menu, but then this means that it has to be on a copy of the image and is, therefore, not re-adjustable later.
Is it possible to have the modal dialogues back for Adjustment Layers, along with all the adjustments previously available, or are CS4 users stuck with the Adjustments Panel - as is ?
Any other suggestions for getting these two useful slider back ?
(but why take them away in the first place ?)

    We are at cross-purposes here:
Simon is talking about using a
    Black and White Adjustment Layer.
It is in the palette for that kind of layer that you will see the Tint Box with the little colored square beside it.
If you check the Tint Box and then CLICK on the little colored square, you will open the regular Color Picker (as shown in # Eight).
At that time, Sliders are available for any selected channel, or choice of input, when you click its dedicated Radio Button.
Sliders for Colorizing can be reached from a Hue/Sat Adjustment Layer but that is a different scenario from the one which Simon was talking about.

  • CS4: Black-and-White adjustment layer - no Saturation slider?

Hi. The modal dialogue for Black and White has the "Colorize" option and for that "Hue" and "Saturation" sliders.
But Black and White as an adjustment layer in the adjustments palette does NOT offer the Saturation slider. At least not in my CS4 Extended on Win XP. There is the targeted adjustment tool (TAT), but it changes color, not saturation.
Can that be or am i missing something?
    Thanks!

The interesting thing is that there is an colorization saturation adjustment slider in the imag-adjustment-black and white dialog as shown below.
The lack of that slider in the adjustment panel is a bug in CS4. It was present in CS3.
Adobe should fix that because it is really usefull because it's non-destructive and can be set as a preference.
The cumbersome workaround is to add a hue saturation adjustment layer.

  • Cc opacity keyframe on black and white adjustment layer doesn't work

    hi
i use premiere cc under w8.1 pro
well i noticed a strange behavior
i added an adjustament layer , black and white effect , and several keyframes
seems that premiere reads only the first one
    for example
    1) keyframe -> @0%  the second keyframe @100%  the video is all in color ,doesn't matter how many keyframes i add
    2) first key @100% second @0% (opacity) the video is all in black and white , again doesn't matter how many keyframes i add , only the first is read
i tried the black and white effect , on video ,titles and so on and it works perfectly , it doesn't work on the adjustament layer
i tried others effects on adjustament layer and they work
    is a bug ?
is there an known bug in prev. versions?
    thanks

    thanks i do it, saturation
but can't understand why this happen with adjustament layer only
may i know which cc version do you use?
sometime i think to buy c6 , i have cc subscription

  • B&W Adjustment Layer Problem in CS4

I am fairly proficient at PS and have used B&W adjustment layers often to create great black and whites.  One of the best features of the B&W adj. layers is the "on-image" color adjustments (the hand with the left/right arrows in the upper left cornet of the adj panel which allows you to drag in the image to adjust the grayscale value of any color in the image).  This has worked great until recently.
All of sudden, my B&W adj layer started acting strangly.  The on-image slider does not activate an eye dropper icon and all the sliders are always showing specific numbers.  When I try to manually slide a color slider, it changes the image as if the slider was moved...but the number in the slider box never changes.  Very weird.  The same "on-image" function is also available on a curves adjustment layer, and it works just fine.
Has anyone ever experienced their B&W adjustment layers to exhibit this behavior before?
I am running CS4 11.0.2, Win XP.  I can think of nothing that has changed in my system lately.
    Thanks for any insight.
    -Jim

Thanks, I might try that, but the B&W adjustment layer isn't really a "tool" and the on-image picker is unique to that panel - so I'm not sure what resetting a tool preference (or all tool preferences for that matter) would do.
However, I may try it anyway if I continue to not find a solution.
    Thanks,
    -Jim

  • Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer problems

I posted earlier about having problems printing with new color laser printer and colors printing wrong.  It is not the printer, the printer prints perfect color from what I see on my screen (calibrated).    Have narrowed it down to a hue/saturation adjustment layer.  When I  open and print a scrapbook paper (brownish color jpg) with out doing anything to it,   it prints perfect color.   When I add an hue/saturation adjustment layer  (to change the color to blue)  then it won't print the right  color.  I have  checked "colorize" and unchecked "colorize" when adding  an adjustment  layer.  I have tried flattening the image and merging the layers before printing. I have unclipped the adjustment layer to the layer below.      It prints the wrong colors only when I add a hue/saturation layer
What am I missing?  This is driving me absolutely crazy!!!
    Thanks!

You could try Layer - Flatten just for the moment of printing (don't forget to undo it afterward).
Seems too basic a problem, though...  I more strongly suspect a color management problem.
Is there a difference in the way you're opening the file that prints well vs. the one that's a problem?  Or is this one and the same file?
    What is your document profile?
What do you have set in the Photoshop print dialog for color management?
What do you have set in the printer driver for color management?

Whenever I add an adjustment layer on the top of a video and apply any effect to it, I don't see any created effect from the adjustment layer. The only way to fix this is to restart PP and the effect will be visible. But this is just annoying.
    Thanks any advance.

  • Adjustment Layer Problem

My Sepia and other options have disappeared in
LAYER > NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER > PHOTO FILTER > OK.
They've been replaced by a bunch of numbers and letters.
I have version 4 on Mac OS X and can't figure out how to reload
    the original filters.
This seamed to have happened after I'd played around with Gradient Maps.
Thanks So Much to anyone who can help!

Quit PSE, then relaunch it while holding down command+option+shift. Keep holding the keys till you see a message asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.
    I'd also repair permissions.

  • How to make a photo black & White while keeping the photo subject in colour?

I am new to PS but not photography
I would like to know how i can make my scene in my photo black and white, while keeping the suject in the photo colour.
    any help greatly appreciated.
    Baba HT

    Hi Baba,
Below are some step-by-step instructions that show you how to acheive this effect very easily with the Quick Selection Tool and a Black & White Adjustment Layer.
    1. Open up your image in Photoshop. In the toolbar, click on the Quick Selection Tool and select your subject.
    2. Go to Select > Refine Edge and use the dialog box to clean up your selection - I've enabled the Smart Radius option and increased the selection radius. When you're done, click OK.
    3. Go to Select > Inverse.
    4. Locate the Adjustments panel - by default, it should be located above the Layers panel (in CS6), but if you can't find it, go to Window > Adjustments. Click on the Black & White adjustment icon, as shown below. Your subject will stay in color, but the setting should turn black and white, as you can see below.
For more on using Adjustment Layers, below is a quick video that goes over the basics:

  • Black/White option Greyed Out

I have a jpeg image that I would like to apply a Black/White adjustment layer to and then ideally fade it by about 50% in order to use it as a background image.  However, when I attempt to apply the Black/White adjustment layer the option is greyed out.  Does anyone know why this is and also how I can work around this?  This is not a copyrighted image or anything.  It is an image of our building that a previous employee took years ago.
Thanks in advance for any help!

    HI,
    Try to do these steps
-Go to image >mode and change it to RGB color.

  • Black and white a adjustment layer not working

Hi every one. I know this is going to sound really dumb but I am looking to change a color logo to bw. I wanted to use the black and white adjustment layer but the option is greyed out. Is there a step I am missing? The file is cmyk and is 8bit. I am using PS  CS6. What do I need to do to make this option available?

The only dumb question, is the one you do not ask.

  • Converting grayscale to black & white

I have a sketched out map of a parking lot that I want to convert to a true black and white. Can someone please tell me step by step how to do this?
    Thanks...

Curvemeister told you how to convert from RGB to grayscale. And by the way I think the new(ish?) black and white adjustment layer does your trick in one adjustment. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    Max:
To move from grayscale to "true black and white" (bitmap), you can use the layer...new adjustment layer...threshold and move the slider. Personally, I like to upsample the image some, as bitmaps have no gray tones to smooth lines out. Your target resolution should be 450-600 ppi at the size you will print. Of course, you can go higher... You can upsample using bicubic smoother and then use the threshold adjustment layer. When you're happy with how it looks, just image...mode...bitmap it and you've got a true black and white.
Of course if your image is photographic, you might want to turn it into "line art," which is kind of a different thing. If you try the threshold adjustment layer on a photo, you'll see what I mean.
Be sure to save as, or dupe the file before you begin!

  • Huge Bugs with Many Legs Still Living in Premiere Pro - (Border from Sharpening & Flickering from Adjustment Layer)

I haven't edited video in awhile.  While working on a new project I've run into a bunch of what I suppose are well known issues in Premiere Pro CC 2014.  It seems Adobe has know about these issues for some time, but that for some reason, nothing is being done about them.  Here is my most recent experience with editing a video using PP:
    1. Found that color correction tools in Premiere Pro for setting White Balance Suck for folks who don't edit video 8 hours a day.
Searched on web to find solution find that Adobe has no fix but random humans have found hack solution: White Balance in Premiere Pro CC on Vimeo
The dude shows you how to use the Cyroce Color Neutralizer plugin from After Effects - but sure enough the current version of the plugin that ships with AE CC 2014 doesn't work with premiere any more so you have to download the old version from dude's website here:  http://www.sternfx.com/tutorials/136
    Thanks to the DUDE!
    2. Found out that adding an Adjustment layer can cause flickering in footage.
Searched on web to find solution find that Adobe has no fix but random humans have found hack solution: PP CC 2014 - adjustment layers flickering problem : Adobe Premiere Pro  AND  Re: image flickering from adjustment layer
Added mask to control flickering.  More specifically, I turned each effect in the adjustment layer on and off until I found the particular effect that was causing the flickering.  Then I created a mask in that effect which covered the entire frame.  Mystically the flickering disappeared.  Learned that if you make any changes to adjustment layer effects, flickering will return and you have to delete/recreate the mask once again. Ridiculous.
    3. Thought all was good and that I could now peacefully continue to finish my project.  I was wrong.  Found that adding sharpening in adjustment layer causes a small border to form around the entire frame.  The pixels seem faded or translucent or something.
Searched on web to find solution find that Adobe has no fix but random humans have found hack solution:  Sharpening bug Premiere Pro - - Fourmedia
So now I've learned that the sharpening effect needs to go on it's own adjustment layer.  Awesome.
Flickering returns because I made a change to adjustment layer 1.  Re-mask.  Sweet.
That's it.  Pretty sure this post will help folks out, but man I am going to run out and give another NLE a shot.  None of these operations should be this difficult.  Makes me wonder if Adobe even attempts to use their own programs.  I don't see how anyone could possibly let a huge tool like Premiere Pro suffer from these issues -- and for so long a period of time.  Absolutely ridiculous.  Adobe truly seems to be asleep at the wheel.  This is some amateur crap here.

Thanks for this post. It would be cool (since Adobe doesn't seem to use their products) if there were more posts like this that I could read before I upgrade. I'm having the flickering w adjustment layer problem you mentioned in #2 - and this post is over month old! Aghh
