Black & White, and Color.

Wanting to take a photo of two people on a trail to end up with the people in the photo colors, but all else surrounding them to be in black and white.
A novice here wondering how to do. . . . .
PSE8.0 Windows XP-pro

1. find the smart brush  (the one with the gears on it)
2. pick a black and white conversion style from the options bar
3. turn on the Inverse checkbox in the options bar
4. Drag over the people you want to keep in color

Problems with Acrobat 8 Professional for Windows. Use Windows 2003, Canon iRC 3220N printer.
I have produced a brochure of 44 A4 pages. 8 pages in color, rest in black&white. The pages are individually produced in Illustrator (Creative Suite 3). Some illustrations in PNG-format where imported into Illustrator. Each of the pages were converted to Acrobat PDF's. For all Acrobat pages with an former PNG-illustration i did the Advanced-PrintProduction-ConvertColors and converted to Grayscale. When printing these pages individually they come out correct as black&white or color when that is the setting.

  • Black & White and other colors in Aperture

How can I color a part of a black & white picture in Aperture. I mean, if I have a color picture, reduce saturation to convert the picture to black & white and then just color the pants or shirt of the person that is in the photo but the rest remains in black and white.

You can only do this in Aperture if that's the only occurrence of that colour in the picture - in which case you can use the colo(u)r sliders.
Otherwise you need to use something like Photoshop (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/mono-with-a-dash-of-colour-photoshop- cs2-tutorial/)

  • Can't have album pics black & white and keep orig. color

Hi, I want to have one of my albums all in black & white. When I do that, it changes my same photos in the library to black & white. Then, if I change those back to original, it changes my album back to color also. What am I doing wrong? I'm using iPhoto 5. I also noticed when I put the B&W photos in a theme drop zone in iDVD (awhile ago and have saved it) it reverted those back to color too!
    Hope it's something simple! Thanks!

    Hi elizabeth,
First duplicate the images, then edit the duplicate images to black and white.
Put those images in an album. When you don't want the Black and white images anymore, you can delete the album, then delete the duplicates in the library.
I know it might be a pain and does add extra images.
I am not sure why the images you had in black and white reverted to color.

  • How to find out embedded raster image is Black&White or Color image?

Is there any possibility to find out the embedded raster image is Black&White, Gray image (or) Color image in "illustrator cs3" without using color mode shown in "document info" pannel. Kindly advice me, the possibilities and solution. And also any scripts avilable for this?
    Thanks.

Or you could select the embedded image, and open the Window>Document Info panel. Select Embedded Images from the fly out menu on the Document Info panel. This should give you the color mode and more info on the embedded file in question.

  • Black & White with Color + Saturation

I've been working in Lightroom 4 on a photo that I took and I have everything the way I want it (these adjustments include increasing the saturation on some colors under the HSL tab). Now I am trying to make the top half of the picture just black and white, but when I chose the Adjustment Brush and sturn the Saturation down on it to -100 and start going over the top half of the picutre, some of the colors (the ones I turned the Saturation up on under the HSL tab) dull a little but do not go completely Black & White. Anyone have a way around this?

If you are just doing it to half of an image, a Graduated filter (perhaps several of them stacked) with a rapid transition break and 100% desat would work.
Otherwise you could stack multiple occurances of the adjustment brush until you drive all color out.
web-weaver is correct in pointing out this is a job better suited to PS.

  • Black & White and RAW

I shot some RAW images in my camera's (Olympus E-620) monochrome mode, but can only get color images when I open in Elements 9. How do I get the Black and White settings from the camera ? ( I know that I can de-saturate the color image, but shouldn't there be a B&W image from the camera ?)

As has beeen said above, the RAW image contains all of the colour information - your Olympus software will do all the convertion to Black & White.
In PSE 9, you can take the RAW image and adjust it to provide the best colour image in 8 bit mode. Then open the image in the editor and use Enhance -> Convert to Black & White.

  • Lightroom black & white to color

When I download my photos from my camera to lightroom 2.2 it takes images that I shot in black and white and converts them to color-Does anyone know if there is a setting or a way to prevent this from happening?

    Hi Andrew
I am assuming you are shooting in RAW. If you shoot in JPG you will get black and white photos. The reason you see a black and white in playback on the camera must be because the camera is showing a black and white preview.
Fortunately for you, RAW captures Red, Green and Blue and combines them into an image, your photo. So the RAW converter within lightroom necessarily combines the components, making a colour image.
This is a good thing. RAW images capture as much as possible so you have as much information and detail to a shot as possible.
The black and white conversion in lightroom allows you to play with colours when making the photos. If it imported black and white you'd have lost so much information.
What would happen if you got home fro a shoot and realised a shot could have been great in colour, or you rushed to shoot a sunset forgetting the setting was on black and white...
To make the lightroom import black and white photos, you will need to make a develop preset.
easiest way, please excuse if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.
    1. open lightroom
    2. goto Develop
    3. click greyscale under the basic treatments
    4. right click on the thumbnail along the bottom that is now black and white OR go to the PRESETs on the left of the screen opening the panel if ifs not there and click the +
    5. enter a preset name  - ie import to Black and White
    6. select Auto Grayscale Mix
    7. click create
    1 preset made
    To Import
    1. click Library
    2. click File and import - from disk, from device...
    3. Select the files you'd like to import as black and white, tick them so they are selected
    go to the develop settings
    chose your usual settings and
and from the information to apply, select Develop Settings and from the drop down list select import to Black and White
    and then import.
The pictures you've then chosen will be in black and white.
That will work - you may need to remember which photos were black and white as the thumbnails in the import dialoge may not be black and white.
I dont shoot black and white as I want to play with colour as I process to black and white.
Shooting in Black and White mode means you can NEVER have a colour version of the photo, so you may lose a great photo having your setting to be that.
As you are using Lightroom, you are messing around with the images, so shoot colour, then click grayscale and them play with the greyscale mix, you will have much more fun.
But that above process will bring your photos in as black and white.
    Hope that helps you
( I'd still shoot colour and convert every time  - even if jpeg )

  • Acquire black/white from color camera

I have a color camera and would like to acquire image in black/white. I want to tried grabbing image in black and white because I want to increase speed of the program. I tried changing the format of the image from RGB to float when creating an image (IMAQ create image), it worked but the program worked so slow. My questions are:
    1. Can you suggest me how to make it faster?
    2. Does aquiring image in black and white instead of color (RGB) help increase speed of the program?

    Irene,
I will assume you are using the PCI-1411 board for your acquisition. In MAX, you can select what the output is. Your options are a full color image, the different color planes (R,G,B) or the HSI color planes. I would select Intensity to get a grayscale image. The conversion will be done on the board, which is fast. In your program, use a standard 8 bit image, which is the default.
Acquiring the image in grayscale will not necessarily increase the speed of the program, but it should increase the speed of any processing you are doing. Since there is less information to process, it is faster. It really depends on what you are doing with the images after you acquire them.
As a general rule, there is no reason to acquire color images unless
you need the color information. A grayscale camera is cheaper and the image quality is usually better.

  • Printing black &white when color cartridges are out of ink

When color ink cartridges low but black new and full, why can't I print in black and white? All my cartridges were low or out of ink. I had a new black cartridge so replaced the empty one with it, thinking I could then print things in black and white, just not color. It's printing practically blank pages with some faint color on them, not even a smidge of black anywhere.

I have the EXACT same issue, just have a different printer Photosmart C4580...I'd like to know the answer as to why with new black and white cartridge it keeps defauting back to color, even if I select under preference to print B&W...really frustrating.....!!!

  • Black, white and colour?

Hey I'm new to Elements 10, and was wondering how to produce an image that is in black and white but, say, have a flower in colour? Much help is needed please!!

You can also do it manually. You need to duplicate your color photo.  1. Open your color photo in PSE10 Full Edit
    2. On the Top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    3. On the top menu click Enhance >>Convert to Black & White >>OK
    4. If you can’t see the layers pallet to the right click Window >>Layers
    5. At the bottom of the layers pallet click add layer mask (the icon with a small circle)
    6. Make sure your foreground color is set to black then select the brush tool
    7. Click the mouse over the area where you wish to reveal color and use like an eraser to reveal the background below
    8. To correct errors switch the foreground color to white, then switch back to black and continue
N.B. if your brush is too big or too small you can use the square bracket keys to adjust the size up or down.
The smart brush tool involves making selections which can be more tricky than using the ordinary brush.

  • Black & white to color

Why does iphoto import my black & white photos as color?

and yes they were raw files.
That's the reason you're getting the color. The raw file still contains all of the color information and that's what iPhoto is reading when it creates the jpg version of it to use for display and editing. There was another topic about this same issue a while back. I'm not sure what the solution, if any, was. You can edit the RAW file if you have an editor that can do that and remove the color and save as a new file or do the same with iPhoto in the Effects editing pane or use the Saturation slider in the Adjust pane.
Terence Devlin explains it in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6226049&#6226049
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot regularly or safe mode, getting patches of black white and grey noise on screen

It was giving me video problems at first and now has pixelated black grey and white designs popping up when I turn it on. It loaded up in safe mode the other week but now it just stays at the gray apple and spinning icon.
I am posting this from an iPhone right now so I am not sure how to attach the picture I took. I will try to upload it after.

Apple store genius bar is the place to go for a definitive diagnosis.  If it is the logic board, you may be in market for a replacement MBP.  Unless you have some emotional attachment to that particular MBP, it may not be cost effective to repair it.  (I note that yours is a pre-Unibody MBP)
If you are lucky and it is the display, you might be able to get a replacement from iFixit or Powerbook Medic for a reasonable price and do the swap yourself.
    Good luck.
    Ciao.

  • Images imported... some ruined with blank white and color banding

I'm using Lightroom 4... i've been importing my RAW images from my external harddrive. Some show up in the catalog as ruined with a blank white section and color bands.  I've checked the actual image on the external hard drive and it is fine. I've deleted the ruined files from the LR catalog, then re-imported those problem ones... still come in as white with banding.  I've even tried deleting them from the catalog, then from the harddrive... then back onto the HD from the camera, then back into lightroom. Some look ok until I look at then in loupe view... and the same problem happens.  Meanwhile the images on the HD and on the camera's CF card are fine.  Suggestions???

You have to troubleshoot and eliminate the bad hardware that is causing the corruption.
It could be anything from the camera writing bad image data, to the card not accepting the image data, to the card-reader or camera-cable corrupting data as it’s been transferred to the hard-disk failing or the computer memory failing.
Only you or someone at your computer can only determine which of these is the problem by changing one component at a time to see which one makes a difference.  The most common issue is the memory card, and the next common is the card read or cable, but it could be other things.
The first thing to try is copy the same images, again, and see if the corruption occurs exactly the same or not.  If so then the image data is likely bad on the card, so the card or camera is at fault.  If the corruption is different the second time the images are copies, then the corruption is likely happening in the transfer or on the computer, so that eliminates the camera (and maybe the card).

  • Black & white and Sepia effects

Hi, I have iPhoto 5 (version 5.0.4) and would like to convert original photos to either Black & White or Sepia. Can I do this in this version? I don't seem to have those options when I select a photo to start editing it. thanks :o)

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It’s quite a while since I used v5 but I think you’ll need a later version to do this. Or you can use an external editor:
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
