Black & White and other colors in Aperture

How can I color a part of a black & white picture in Aperture. I mean, if I have a color picture, reduce saturation to convert the picture to black & white and then just color the pants or shirt of the person that is in the photo but the rest remains in black and white.

You can only do this in Aperture if that's the only occurrence of that colour in the picture - in which case you can use the colo(u)r sliders.
Otherwise you need to use something like Photoshop (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/mono-with-a-dash-of-colour-photoshop- cs2-tutorial/)

Video drivers issue (dual DVI monitors off bay :: one black and white and one color)

Hello,
I have tried everything to try to make these two monitors color. They are both relatively new Dell monitors. Both are DVI, both are connected to the latest Lenovo bay for my T430 laptop. Both worked fine after I initially installed both video drivers (Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7 [64-bit]) and NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver for Windows 7 [64-bit]). Then out of nowhere one of them (Dell 1) decides it wants to be seen in black and white! I initially thought it was the monitor itself, but when swapping monitors (Dell 1, Dell 2) the other monitor (Dell 2) went black and white when plugged into the DVI formerly used by the Dell 1 monitor. Ok, so now it must be the DVI ports on the bay station (Lenovo) right? Nope. I had a tech bring me a second, brand new bay (identical). Same issue! So this leads me to the video drivers...
Does anyone have any idea. I disabled each driver and reenabled each to no avail. The drivers are the latest drivers downloaded directly from Lenovo's site. Checked the driver settings/monitor setting using both Windows 7 Professional and Nvidia to see if anything stood out. Nothing.
Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thank you in advance! :~)

I got a new laptop and when I plugged it into my docking station the external monitors were all in black & white. My old computer still worked fine without changing any settings on the monitors. I found that I needed to go into Control Panel \ NVidia Control Panel \ Display \ Adjust Desktop Color Settings, then select the monitor I wanted to adjust, then set the slider up for Digital Vibrance. For some reason on the new laptop the NVidia settings defaulted to 0 for this.

How do I make one part of a picture black and white and rest color?

I am working on new campaign for Vi-spring orange county. I need to take a photograph of a woman with a bare back sitting on a mattress and make part of the picture in black and white and the other part in color. I then need to insert an outline of a spine on top in a bright color. I would really appreciate some help on how to start.

I think what we need is a little more information.
When you say you want to make part of the image black and white, do you want to make certain areas of the image black and white or just do away with certain colors in the photo. You can do a selective color and get rid of all but one color ie. A red rose in a green field, take out all the green in the image and the red in the rose is the only thing that has color. Or you can take out one color and leave the rest of the colors in, so basically the oppsite of what I just explained.
If you want certain sections of a image black and white ie. a room with a bed in it make the whole room black and white and keep the bed in color...you need to look into masking.
If you want to do masking I can find you a tutorial for it, but I need to know if i'm on the right track.

Printing Black&White and Color combined in Binder

Problems with Acrobat 8 Professional for Windows. Use Windows 2003, Canon iRC 3220N printer.
I have produced a brochure of 44 A4 pages. 8 pages in color, rest in black&white. The pages are individually produced in Illustrator (Creative Suite 3). Some illustrations in PNG-format where imported into Illustrator. Each of the pages were converted to Acrobat PDF's. For all Acrobat pages with an former PNG-illustration i did the Advanced-PrintProduction-ConvertColors and converted to Grayscale. When printing these pages individually they come out correct as black&white or color when that is the setting.
But when all the 44 PDF's are combined into a binder some of the black&white pages are forced back to color. Most of these forced-back pages contain an former PNG-illustration The brochure ia printed on A3 sheets as a booklet and saddle stitched.
Any help to solve the problem?

Can you, on Photoshop elemetns 5, do part black and white picture and change one thing into color? If you can, what is an easy to follow way to do so.

 Check the example below... after you open a Hue/saturation adjustment layer at the top of the pallet, move the saturation slider to the left then press OK.
 
 Now set your foreground color to black... pick a soft brush.. and CLICK with your mouse on the attached mask to make it active... see example.
 
 When you paint with black on your picture the color will show.... if you show too much just switch your brush color to white and where you paint the color will be hidden

Can't have album pics black & white and keep orig. color

Hi, I want to have one of my albums all in black & white. When I do that, it changes my same photos in the library to black & white. Then, if I change those back to original, it changes my album back to color also. What am I doing wrong? I'm using iPhoto 5. I also noticed when I put the B&W photos in a theme drop zone in iDVD (awhile ago and have saved it) it reverted those back to color too!

First duplicate the images, then edit the duplicate images to black and white.
Put those images in an album. When you don't want the Black and white images anymore, you can delete the album, then delete the duplicates in the library.
I know it might be a pain and does add extra images.
I am not sure why the images you had in black and white reverted to color.

How to make a movie half black and white and half color

Is there a way to take a full color video and make half of the video black and white and the other half full color? For instance imagine a line down the center of the video, on the left the video is black and white, on the right side it's full color. Taking that concept if an object or person moves from the left to the right side of the screen, thus crossing that invisible line they automatically switch from black and white to color.
Almost like a video mask overlay.. Is that possible in iMovie?

When I do that it only makes a short portion (the top video) color somehow it shortens the clip to 2 seconds, I tried to edit for the full 47 second clip (just a sample to play with) but it keeps going back to 2 seconds for the top video.
Any other ideas? I do have Final Cut Pro as well as Adobe After Effects as well, but I just figured iMovie would be easiest way to do this simple effect...

Why Does My DVD play in Black and White and Not Color??

I made a DVD of some video clips that I shot in color. The DVD plays fine on my computer (it plays in color), and it plays on the TV except it shows up as black and white. Other DVD's play just fine in color on the TV. What is the problem? Thanks!!!

The only two reasons I can think of that something would play in black and white are:
(a) you are using an S-video connection and there's a problem with a connector or cable. If the connection is loose or broken, you can see an image but it will be black and white.
(b) viewing a PAL disc on a NTSC TV... I've not tried it but I thought that you can sometimes see the image but that it is black and white. There would be other problems with the image too, though, not just a lack of color.
What make and model of player are you using? What kind of TV? Are you using composite or s-video or component connection? Are you using DVD-Rs or something else (-RW, +R, +RW, dual layer)?
Seriously, I can think of no reason why it would display in color on your computer, but not on your TV.

Black & White and RAW

I shot some RAW images in my camera's (Olympus E-620) monochrome mode, but can only get color images when I open in Elements 9. How do I get the Black and White settings from the camera ? ( I know that I can de-saturate the color image, but shouldn't there be a B&W image from the camera ?)

As has beeen said above, the RAW image contains all of the colour information - your Olympus software will do all the convertion to Black & White.
In PSE 9, you can take the RAW image and adjust it to provide the best colour image in 8 bit mode. Then open the image in the editor and use Enhance -> Convert to Black & White.

Printing in Black & White w/ Spot Color

I have a Canon MX870 printer (4 color printer). When printing B&W photos, the color has a tint of magenta to it. I use photoshop cs6 to create the B&W image and have tried adjusting all kinds of settings on the software and on the printer.
I used to print them on my old Canon i850 and the black turned out VERY Black & White. When I use the Copier function of this All-In-One printer. Black and white copys turn out perfect. Very True Black. When I print from the computer, photos turn out tinted with magenta hue.
I read in another printer forum...
"Canons as a rule use the black cartridge when black is greater than
60% IIRC. Softer greys use a mix of the color cartridges. There is
little you can do about this."
Is there a way to change this? Or am I stuck having to send my photos to a printshop for printing? ... or buying a different printer??

I would tend to agree with the forum post you are quoting. The MX870 is a great printer, but since it's only got the black ink tank and the colors at it's disposal to make various shades of gray you may see some tinting in your black and white photos. If you print alot of black and white photos you might want to consider looking into one of our printers that has a dedicated gray ink tank such as the PIXMA MG6320

Way to adjust black/white levels using color checker card in FCP6?

When I shoot, I use a Gretag MacBeth white balance card for the camera, and also shoot a grey scale ColorChecker card with black, grey and white areas.
When I apply a 3 way color checker, sampling the black, then white, then grey in that order, I don't really notice any visible change (which I guess is good!).
But, I was hoping that it would also notice that the black in my video, is not really the blackest legal black - and make adjustments for that - and also the brightest whites.
I guess the 3-way color correction only does, who would guess?, color correction.
Is there a way to use the color checker card with some some included in FCP or 3rd party tools to make the blacks in my image closer to the blackest legal blacks, whites closes to the whitest legal whites - or am I totally missing the point?
The video actually looks great, but I was wondering if there was some way to further enhance it, using the color checker card - which seems to be a useful standard?

Zebulun - I seem to remember a few years back doing still photography - where I'd eyedropper a white point, and eye dropper a black point, to change the value Photoshop thought was white and black.
And, I guess I was hoping to be able to do something like that using the black, grey and white of that card.
Is there anyway the card could be used with the waveform? It just seems logical somehow that if you know for sure, here's what black is, here's what white is, that that info could be used for other purposes than color balance?
