Black & White in Greyscale

I need to make an image that is Green & Black 'greyscale' instead of Black & White 'greyscale'. I tried the color replacement tool, while it works, it just changes the one color, either black or white, but none of the grey in between.
I downloaded the  Photoshop CS4 Extended Trial just for this because I thought if any image editor could do this it would be Photoshop.  If anyone could help that would be great.

Hmm, that is kinda what I want. I'll try it out.
I'll try to explain further quickly:
I'm working with a 1280x720 PNG file used as a startup logo in an embedded linux OS for a Westinghouse LCD TV firmware.  When the image is displayed on the television on start up, black "RGB(0,0,0)" becomes white and green RGB(0,255,0) becomes black. black shows up as white and green shows up as black, and anything in between is a shade of grey. of the RGB, Red and Blue are ignored.

  • How to export a CMYK document to a black/white or greyscale pdf for print?

Hello, I have some knowledge in graphics design, but very little about color management.
Currently I need to convert an instruction manual I made to black and white output only. We'd prefer to keep the indesign (.indd) and it's source images in their respective colors, but when exporting the document to a pdf my printer can use, we'd like to make that document a black and white pdf, as it's a black/white manual anyway. A little color conversion isn't to bad, as long as it's reasonable. all images that might give trouble are in greyscale anyway.
So how do I export a full color indesign document to a black&white/greyscale pdf?
    ps:
very newb question, but if you don't ask, you never learn:
When do you use the colours "registration", and when do you use "paper"?

I am also trying desperately to convert my CMYK colors into a grayscale so that when I print the document the printer only uses K (and C=0 M=0 Y=0)
And I saw this bit of info you wrote a few months ago. I am working working with photoshop CS4. I tried to follow it but I found the following difficulties. Hope you don't mind me writing over your text.
    RGB image --> Grayscale
New doc --> CMYK image, same size, empty
Copy Grayscale and paste into the K-channel of the CMYK image. - (It only allows me to copy onto the CMYK layer but not onto the Black so I had to Drag layer onto channel delete the black layer and rename my new layer as black but then the document changes from CMYK to Multichannel and I have to re-change the mode again to CMYK but this already prints CMYK...)
    Place image in InDesign doc.
Everything else (vector, text) by K-only.
(...then when I placet that CMYK file into InDesign, and PDF it, on the output preview still separates the grayscale image into CMYK and when I print, the printer still prints CMYK instead of only K)
So then I say OK so.. let's use the Multichannel document instead, which it actually seems to print on K only (while CMY=0), it only allows me to save as PSD. and when I try to place it on Indesign... I have a message saying that this file is using an unsupported colour space, only RGB,CMYK, lab, indexed, and bitmap are supported by the photoshop filter
On top of that I have been asked for a Jpeg image in black and white which prints only K (while CMY=0). I have tried with channel mixed presets and even though the info on screen is now C=0, M=0, Y=0 and K= various values, when I send it to print. The printer still prints with all the CMYK colours
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
    Thank you

  • Turning images black (not black & white nor greyscale)

I want to make a lion's fur black. I've searched tutorials on changing colors, played around with hue/saturation and nothing seems to be working. Does anyone know how to make an image black without making the whole image black and white?

Since there were no responses to your inquiry I thought I would take a shot at it. I began by putting the unaltered image on its own layer. Used image > Apply image of the Blue channel set to multiply to build density and  contrast. Followed with a Quick Selection of the Lion (and Refine Edge). As the layers panel shows, three adjustment layers were added to modify curves, convert the masked image to B&W and work with Hue/Saturation since the black lion is not a neutral black. Finally I made a composite image for some local dodge, burn to add the shadow under the lion's paw. I did not spend the time the image deserved but primarily to confirm the approach. It's crude in a few places; highlight tone separation needs work, as does the Hue/Saturation adjustment and the eye area of the mask,. Sorry about that.

  • Black & White images

    Hi everyone,
to explain what I'm doing first.
I am creating a bi-monthly magazine for a club, the magazine is printed in black & white with greyscale images, with a colour cover spread.
This magazine also appears on the clubs website in full color.
So my question is, can I create the whole magazine on inDesign in full color, then export it as a PDF in full color for the website.  Then export a second copy as a PDF with the color cover spread and internal pages in black & white/grey scale.
As I don't want to have to make the whole magazine in colour, export it, then make all the changes to the images in photoshop.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You can make the magazine in full colour and export to PDF, giving you a full colour.
You can then use Acrobat to Convert the PDF to Grayscale (save as a new name) and that can be your black and white version.
There is no way using File>Export to get a Grayscale PDF from InDesign.
To get a grayscale PDF from InDesign you would need to use File>Print and print directly to a PDF OR to postscript (then use acrobat distiller to distill the PS file). But printing to PDF is frowned upon by many.
Besides, a simple conversion of colour images to grayscale is kind of bland. When you convert a colour image to grayscale you always almost nearly always need to change the levels/curves and shadow and highlight/contrast for a meatier looking b/w image.
But you can make the conversion to Grayscale in the PDF as said earlier http://www.google.ie/search?q=pdf+to+grayscale&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-U S:official&client=firefox-a

  • Black & White Adjustment that retains same Greyscale values (when in Color)

    Hi all,
I noticed that when I apply a simple Black&White Adjustment layer to my colored layers, the 'Greyscale values' either via LAB sliders /HSb brightness changes drastically.:
    http://i57.tinypic.com/16ifm8n.png
eg the L slider for the turquoisy color jumps so much
I've tried the Hue/Saturation & Black&White adjustment layers with default settings. Can someone tell me a quick B&W workaround conversion that adheres as close as possible to sliders values when the adjustment layer is off?  I used it for digital coloring to check my composition 'values' regularly, so complex grayscale conversions would be less preferable. Also, I do not need it to be perfect to human vision, just hopefully adhere roughly to the 'L' or 'B' slider values when the B&W adjustment is turned on/off
    thanks alot!

I believe the tone shift to which you are referring is caused by the B&W adjustment layer as demonstrated here. This is the basic file (Adobe RGB):
Add a duplicate layer and change its Blending Mode to Luminosity. The colors will not change. Then add a Black & White Adjustment Layer and it will modify the resultant color like this:
For a clearer comparison, the image below shows the beginning image with the altered luminosity of the B&W Adjustment layer in the center circle
    (Notice Clipping Mask)
So, the default setting of the sliders that appear in the B&W drop-down menu must be adjusted so that, at the start, this Adjustment layer of the Luminosity does not alter the color. To do that, I had to change the settings to:
    Reds     33
    Yellows 90
    Greens     60
    Cyans     72
    Blues     14
    Magentas 46
You may save these settings as a Preset. so that they do not require resetting each time. The practical application of this is that it allows you to lighten and darken specific colors in a scene without resorting to selections. I have found this to be most useful in landscape images. (I overdid the changes in the sample below for demonstration purposes only.)

Possible print in greyscale or black&white mode with empty color cartriges and black full? (HP Photosmart Photo D7163)

With some printers it is possible. Try going to the printer properties and selecting Grayscale pprinting.

  • How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in the original?

How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in its original. I don't need the print out to be in color, and I don't want to waste the color ink.

It depends on your printer and the application you are using.
In some applications you can choose color vs. greyscale/black&white when you do File > Print.   PowerPoint is one example of an application that allows this choice.
Otherwise, you can usually select greyscale at the time you print the document.  Do File > Print. In the resulting dialog box, there should be an item called Copies & Pages (in Word and other applications) or Preview (in Preview).  Click it.  In the resulting list, you should then see an option called Printer Features.  Click it.  Then you should see an option called Printout Mode.  Usually one of the modes is Greyscale or Black & White.  Select it.  Then Print.
This can also depend on your printer.  Exactly what make/model printer are you using?   And what kind of document are you trying to print (Word, PPT, JPEG, etc)?

  • How do I order my print in black/white in the updated iPhoto

I have just updated to the new iphoto in Mac OS X 10.9    I am trying to order my color print as a black & white photo.  I have gone into the edit/effects area and changed the photo to black & white.  When I click on the share/order prints icons, the photo always reverts back to the original color photo.  In the older iphoto version, I was actually able to click on order prints, then it would give me a black & white order option.  This seems to no longer work this way.  I must be missing something obvious, but I cannot seem to figure it out.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Doesn't seem to be as user friendly as the previous iphoto version.  Thank you.

You are right - the "Order Prints" dialog does show the B&W version as a color photo.
That looks like a bug to me.
As a work-around, while you are waiting for a bug fix:
Use File > Export to export your B&W version to a folder and reimport the version.
Then try to order prints for the reimported version. That should show the photo in greyscale only, like this.
Send feedback to Apple, to let them know, that this needs fixing.  The form is here:   Apple - iPhoto - Feedback

  • Printing now in black & white

I have an HP Deskjet D1520 connected to my Airport Extreme base station. It was working fine, but recently (not sure exactly when this started) color printing has failed. Now colors print only as black & white (like faint greyscale).
I connected the printer directly to my laptop and printing is fine, so it seems to be an issue with going through the Airport Extreme. Could this have been caused by a firmware update on the base station? It looks like it's running version 7.4.2.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am pretty sure I have run across this issue before. Unfortunately, I cannot find the citation right now. If I remember correctly, HP considers this normal operation.
For the DeskJet D1520, try the DeskJet D1400 driver from the HPIJS package found at _http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs_.

  • Black & White Photos to not appear in iPhoto

I added several black & white photos into the library of iPhoto along with many color photos, but none of the black & white show.
Each of the B & W have a black place holder but it is totally black. If I click a photo, it displays as a ghost image lacking detail.
I originally edited these photo scans in Photoshop and saved them as a jpeg image without layers.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

I had same problem. I scanned and saved as greyscale, imported and then they show up as black in preview, etc. Is there any way to change the photos that I have already scanned and saved without having to scan all of them again under the new profile?

  • Why does black/white print with magenta hue?

When I print black/white greyscale in Adobe Reader or Acrobat, some documents print with ghost text that appears in a light magenta.  This ghost text is staggered to the bottom right of the black text.
I'm printing from Mac OS X 10.8.4, Adobe Reader 11.0.03 using an HP LaserJet 1525nw.
The left side of the image is a screen capture from the PDF and printed.  The right side printed directly from the PDF.
    Any ideas why this happens?

Sorry - I was able to find out how to do color calibrate.  It is supposed to print a page but never did.  I tried it twice.  Not sure if it actually did anything.  But results are the same with printing.
The printer is very low on the three color cartridges, which I don't use.  It is at normal capacity on black.  Even though I'm selecting to print only black/white in Reader, could the low status on the color cartridges be causes this pink hue?
I did try a pure PDF document (one that isn't a scanned print page).  It printed without issue.  As I mentioned above, there is something about a scanned in printed page, which causes this pink hue issue.

  • Email Stops Sending - Constant Spinning Black & White Wheel

I mistakenly attempted to send a large attachment (over 30mb) and since then (10 hours ago) my email account has the spinning black & white wheel spinning. I am able to receive emails, but not send.
When looking at the Activity Monitor, the Network traffic is high. When I force mail to quit, Network traffic trails off.
I've deleted the Outbox.mbox as an other post suggested, but this didn't solve the problem.
The email account causing the issue is a gmail one, setup with IMAP.
Have checked the Mail/Preferences/Outgoing Mail account, and all looks well.
    Any suggestions?

You will probably be able to correct this by going to your web interface page for your ISP mail and delete the offending e-mail file from there. I've had this happen a couple of times. And doing this cleared it up. Gmail is a particularly egregious culprit with things like this. Once it gets stuck, you almost always have to go to the web interface to clear up the problem.
    Good Luck.

  • MacBook - Black & white image on TV

Please can somebody help with connecting my MacBook to a Sony trinitron TV
I have a new MacBook and I'm using the following set up to connect to a 5 year old Sony TV -
Apple mini-DVI to video converter into S-video lead connected to S-video to SCART adaptor - problem is that I only get a black & white image.
    Can anybody help = please?
    13" white MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi essman,
As S-Video cables send their chroma (colour) and luminance (brightness) signals separately it sounds as though the problem may be found either in your S-Video cable or in one of the S-Video connectors. If only the luminance pins/wire was working correctly your video signal would appear to be in black and white.
To ensure that the SCART adapter is not the problem however I would recommend testing with a composite video cable (also known as an RCA.) With that cable the entire video signal is sent over the one pin, so you either get video or you don't. If over that connection it's still black and white, I would say the blame lies with the SCART adapter.
    Hope this helps!
    Jason
