Black & White Layer in CS5

Has anyone had this problem, is there a fix?
When creating a monochrome image if I flatten the image and then add Black and White as a layer to the flattened image it will not allow me to make changes. Every time I move a slider in the B&W tool it jumps back to the initial position. If I don't flatten before adding the Black & White layer it works OK.
The only way I can make it work if I want to flatten the image beforehand is to select all layers and then Merge Down, Merge Visible causes the same problem as flattening.
Worked OK in CS3.

Win 7 32 bit,CS5, 4Gb Ram.

I only get the problem if a colour image with layers
is flattened before the B&W layer is added.
This will work if the B&W layer is put at the top of the stack.
Like this it does not work
The original image is:
I shrunk the image down to 96 P/I and 12 cm wide so I could post it here and found that I don't get a problem with the B&W layer at all.
So I flattened the full size image, saved it, closed the image and then reopened the flattened image and then applied a B&W layer and again no problem.
So I suspect that it is a memory issue or some other sort of conflict.
I have 4Gb of which 1.2Gb is available for PS.
I installed Win 7 as an upgrade from Vista.
I have seen on other PS problems in the forum that a clean install of Windows can cure some problems.
Thanks for your response.

• How can you erase part of the black & white layer on Photoshop CS6?

I've been trying to earse part of the b&w layer to have color pop because it's easier for some floweres instead of magic lassoing. Unfortunatly my earser tool will not let me earse some of the black and white layer. What can I do to fix this issue?

Try using a Layer Mask, and paint black on the mask to cause the Black and White adjustment to become "transparent" in those areas and reveal color.
If you cause the transparency to go outside the bounds of what you want, paint white on the Layer Mask to make it apply the adjustment layer effect again.
Grayscale on the Layer Mask will cause partial transparency.
Have fun discovering the neat stuff you can do with Layer Masks.

• Extracting Photograph Noise as a black and white layer from Photograph

I am looking to extract natural noise from a photographs material and create a black and white layer out of it, but I am new to photoshop and unsure how to proceed with this.
For example, here is a photograph of a hard plastic gun.

I have seen on forums where users will find a good reference image and use it to create a new black and white noise picture utilizing the reference.
For instance the hard plastic noise from the gun, might look like this once extracted and done correctly.

Any ideas on how to produce something such as this?
Thank you

This is just off the top of my head...  You could try something like this:
1.  Duplicate the image as a second layer.
2.  Run a noise-reduction tool with aggressive settings, possibly multiple times.
3.  Set the noise-reduced layer to Difference.
4.  Merge layers.
5.  Filter - Other - High Pass.
6.  Enhance the magnitude of the result with a curves or levels operation.

• PS not allowing me to add a Black & White Adjustment layer

Hi,
Hope you're well.
There is a photo I've downloaded from the Internet that is by a photographer who shoots in Black & White. However, when I print out the photo it comes out sepia. I tried adding a Black & White Adjustment layer, but when I go to click on the button in the adjustment palette it's grayed out. I've tried this on other photos of the photographer and does it fine.
Any idea what is going on and how it can be resolved? Thanks!

Well, let's assume you are in Grayscale. But just to be sure, open the image and look at the document title bar, it should read something like Gray/8. This indicates your color mode (other modes can be RGB, CMYK, Index and others...). The color settings are found Edit>Color Settings. But don't worry about those for the time being.
Can you give the specs for your printer? Inkjet printers use all colors in printing a grayscale image. Ideally, they do this in percentages that create a neutral tone on the paper. If some of the nozzles are clogged, or if you have wrong choices in the Print Dialog, you will definitely see a color cast. Printing only with black ink will not yield photo-quality results.
Make sure the most recent driver for the printer is installed.
Also, what version of Photoshop on what OS?

• Locked a Black Video Layer and Premiere Pro CS5 Hangs Up

Ran into a problem whereby I have on Video Layer 1 a layer of Black Video about 30 minutes long.
I have 2-4 additional video layers above and about 9 audio layers.
When I locked Layer 1 which has nothing more than a premiere pro generated Black Video layer, Premiere Pro CS5 completely froze up, became unresponsiveand  not even able to move the CTI, particularly when I tried to zoom in on the layer.  However when I locked any of the other video layers, not a problem.  Hardly ever lock layers so didn't notice it before.

• Black&White adjustment layer problem

Hi all,
When I try to apply a black&white adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 Ext., I get the dreaded message: "Could not complete yor request because of a program error". This is true for Tiffs and PSDs (8bit multi layered or 8bit flat) but not for jpegs. Is this a bug or a feature? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for you time,

Could be a hardware acceleration issue with the b&w effect. Turn off OpenGL to verify. also make sure your adjustment layer is not clipped/ masked/ repositioned/ smaller than your comp. Remeber: The adjustment layer merely defines the area to which the effect will be applied, the actula processing still happens on the buffer below it. For anything else we will need more info ansd screenshots. We do not even know what version of AE you are referring to.

• Black & White conversion: CS5 or LR4.1?

Is there any advantage to doing black and white conversion using CS5 rather than LR 4.1?  This feels like a really basic question, but I've been unable to find much of anything out there that speaks directly to this issue.
Thanks ahead of time for any thoughts.

Only if you need to target separate image areas with different conversion mixes does PS have an advantage. Otherwise, it make little difference - but Lightroom can do more B&W simultaneously and without increasing disc space.

• How can I convert RGB Color to Black-White Color?

Dear everyone!
I am using Photoshop CS5. I have got a file from my customer which is done as RGB and the resolution is 300dpi. There are black texts and color images in the file. I wish to print Black-White Process Film (1 black color), but I don't know how to solve it. I started converting my file to Grayscale and then the black texts are not black enough because it becomes lighter. When I go to Level and adjust the color, both the image and texts becomes darker. What must I do to make only texts blacker without effecting the image?
Please find the attached file for the reference.
For more information, please let me know.

What file format was supplied to you? Was it truly RGB @ 300ppi or did you rasterize a PDF?
300ppi is lousy for text. You might converse with your customer to instruct them on the ideal way to supply a file to you.

• Using a script to get the color of a colorized Black & White Bitmap image

I've been running into this wall for quite some time and would greatly appreciate any help that can given for it.
I have an Illustrator script that runs inside of a BridgeTalk session within an InDesign script.  Yeah, it's complicated.  The upshot is that the Illustrator part opens up an EPS file, looks through all objects on a certain layer in that file, and returns an array of the colors used in it.  So, it looks at fill colors, stroke colors, gradient stops, etc.  One of the biggest stumbling blocks (next to PlugIn Items, which I'll ask about in a separate post) is getting the color of raster images.
Most raster images, I realize, are going to be CMYK or RGB images, but our company mostly deals with either Grayscale images or Black & White Bitmaps that are embedded in the EPS file.  Those two allow the ability to colorize them by simply selecting them and then choosing a color, such as a spot PANTONE color from one of their color books.
Now, I need the script to read the color that the raster image has been colorized with.  This works okay for images that have a GrayScale color space, as the script just looks at Colorant[0] of that image.  However, I run into a problem with Black & White Bitmap images.  Here's a piece of code that I try to make work with an EPS file that has a raster image:
var document = app.activeDocument;
for (var i = 0; i < document.layers[0].pageItems.length; i++) {
              // Stepping through each item on the layer.
              var currentItem = document.layers[0].pageItems[i];
              $.writeln("Current item is " + currentItem.typename);
              $.writeln("Number of channels is " + currentItem.channels);
              $.writeln("Color Space is " + currentItem.imageColorSpace);
              $.writeln("Colorized Grayscale? " + currentItem.colorizedGrayscale);
              $.writeln("Number of Colorants: " + currentItem.colorants.length);
              for (var j = 0; j < currentItem.colorants.length; j++)
                        $.writeln("Colorant number " + j + " is " + currentItem.colorants[j]);
              $.writeln("Its parent is " + currentItem.parent);
              $.writeln("Parent's typename is " + currentItem.parent.typename);
This code runs successfully on an Illustrator file that has a Black & White Bitmap image on the top layer, but if you try and run it, you'll see the problem:  Even if you've colorized your Bitmap image with a PANTONE spot color (and the script even returns "true" on the line "Colorized Grayscale?"), Colorant number 0 is "Gray".  It should be the spot color assigned, not "Gray".
Can anyone please help me figure out how to get the script to recognize the actual colorant of a Black & White Bitmap image in Illustrator?

If you're a professional photographer with 50,000 pictures stored now and more coming all the time, you need to forget about using iPhoto and get yourself some professional-quality digital asset management software. iPhoto is not meant for people like you, and instead of providing a simple, elegant one-stop answer to all your needs, iPhoto is actually complicating your life.
You need an application that will:
- catalog ALL your images and keep track of where they are, no matter how many DVDs, folders, partitions or hard drives they're spread over;
- display thumbnails of ALL of them, even when the DVD that contains them is not present in any drive, so you can select all the ones you want for a project;
- find and copy (or export) the originals of all the files you've selected in the browser window, even if it means prompting you to insert the necessary DVDs for all of them.
I suggest Googling "digital asset management software Macintosh" and seeing what turns up. I used to use an old version of Extensis Portfolio, and even that would have been better for your purposes than iPhoto is.

• How to export a CMYK document to a black/white or greyscale pdf for print?

Hello, I have some knowledge in graphics design, but very little about color management.
Currently I need to convert an instruction manual I made to black and white output only. We'd prefer to keep the indesign (.indd) and it's source images in their respective colors, but when exporting the document to a pdf my printer can use, we'd like to make that document a black and white pdf, as it's a black/white manual anyway. A little color conversion isn't to bad, as long as it's reasonable. all images that might give trouble are in greyscale anyway.
So how do I export a full color indesign document to a black&white/greyscale pdf?
ps:
very newb question, but if you don't ask, you never learn:
When do you use the colours "registration", and when do you use "paper"?

I am also trying desperately to convert my CMYK colors into a grayscale so that when I print the document the printer only uses K (and C=0 M=0 Y=0)
And I saw this bit of info you wrote a few months ago. I am working working with photoshop CS4. I tried to follow it but I found the following difficulties. Hope you don't mind me writing over your text.
RGB image --> Grayscale
New doc --> CMYK image,same size, empty
Copy Grayscale and paste into the K-channel of the CMYK image. - (It only allows me to copy onto the CMYK layer but not onto the Black so I had to Drag layer onto channel delete the black layer and rename my new layer as black but then the document changes from CMYK to Multichannel and I have to re-change the mode again to CMYK but this already prints CMYK...)
Place image in InDesign doc.
Everything else (vector, text) by K-only.
(...then when I placet that CMYK file into InDesign, and PDF it, on the output preview still separates the grayscale image into CMYK and when I print, the printer still prints CMYK instead of only K)
So then I say OK so.. let's use the Multichannel document instead, which it actually seems to print on K only (while CMY=0), it only allows me to save as PSD. and when I try to place it on Indesign... I have a message saying that this file is using an unsupported colour space, only RGB,CMYK, lab, indexed, and bitmap are supported by the photoshop filter
On top of that I have been asked for a Jpeg image in black and white which prints only K (while CMY=0). I have tried with channel mixed presets and even though the info on screen is now C=0, M=0, Y=0 and K= various values, when I send it to print. The printer still prints with all the CMYK colours
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
Thank you

• I have changed my photo to black & white.

Photo is now black & white.  Is there a way to change parts of the photo back to color?

Miss
     Ann1960,
If the face in the photo with the person's eyes closed is otherwise ok, I would just clone the open eye(s).
To do that:
Open both pictures, and display them side-by-side.
On the picture with closed eyes, open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers in the layers palette. Do nothing else on this layer just yet
Access the clone stamp tool, and press ALT on the keyboard and left click over the open eye (your source)
On the other picture, clone into the blank layer which you created in step #2 (destination)
Access the move tool to position the eye and resize with the corner handles of the bounding box.
You can change this layer's opacity and blending mode to suit
If you really prefer to substitute the entire face, make a selection of the "good" face with one of the selection tools (e.g. selection brush, marquee):
Go to Edit>copy
Open the other picture
Go to Edit>paste.
Use the move tool to position
Touch up with eraser and brush tools
TIP: Use the bracket keyes [ to decrease and ] to increase the size of the brush cursor.
Report back with your progress

• Black & White Adjustment that retains same Greyscale values (when in Color)

Hi all,
I noticed that when I apply a simple Black&White Adjustment layer to my colored layers, the 'Greyscale values' either via LAB sliders /HSb brightness changes drastically.:
http://i57.tinypic.com/16ifm8n.png
eg the L slider for the turquoisy color jumps so much
I've tried the Hue/Saturation & Black&White adjustment layers with default settings. Can someone tell me a quick B&W workaround conversion that adheres as close as possible to sliders values when the adjustment layer is off?  I used it for digital coloring to check my composition 'values' regularly, so complex grayscale conversions would be less preferable. Also, I do not need it to be perfect to human vision, just hopefully adhere roughly to the 'L' or 'B' slider values when the B&W adjustment is turned on/off
thanks alot!

I believe the tone shift to which you are referring is caused by the B&W adjustment layer as demonstrated here. This is the basic file (Adobe RGB):
Add a duplicate layer and change its Blending Mode to Luminosity. The colors will not change. Then add a Black & White Adjustment Layer and it will modify the resultant color like this:
For a clearer comparison, the image below shows the beginning image with the altered luminosity of the B&W Adjustment layer in the center circle
(Notice Clipping Mask)
So, the default setting of the sliders that appear in the B&W drop-down menu must be adjusted so that, at the start, this Adjustment layer of the Luminosity does not alter the color. To do that, I had to change the settings to:
Reds     33
Yellows 90
Greens     60
Cyans     72
Blues     14
Magentas 46
You may save these settings as a Preset. so that they do not require resetting each time. The practical application of this is that it allows you to lighten and darken specific colors in a scene without resorting to selections. I have found this to be most useful in landscape images. (I overdid the changes in the sample below for demonstration purposes only.)

• H264 QuickTime Black, White, Gamma Levels

Let me start by saying this is a QuickTime issue.  I went to the COW to post this but amazingly enough they don't have a Apple QuickTime Forum.  My thought was to then post it in COW's After Effects Forum but I figured I'd post it in THIS After Effects Forum since it's - in my opinion - more specialized.
The problem:
On Windows Vista When I take an uncompressed movie rendered from After Effects and export it from QuickTime Player as an H264 movie the black, white and gamma levels are all messed up.
Here is a picture illustrating what I've done to test things.
http://s814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/mtrzepla/?action=view&current=H264BlackLevels.jpg
- Uncompressed looks FINE
- H264 looks WASHED OUT.
- The H264 movie in After Effects looks - FINE!
- A single frame from exported from QuickTime Player from the washed out H264 movie looks - FINE!
I took a screen capture of the H264 movie in QuickTime Player into After Effects and was able to adjust it - by eye using Levels - until it looked like the Original Uncompressed movie again.
My adjustments:
Output Black: -39
Output White: 260
Gamma 1.2
Before coming here I DID do some poking around, keywords "H264 washed out" and each post talked about Gamma and Tags but I 'think' my situation is different.  One, I used tools that reportedly remove Gamma 'Tags' from QuickTime movies and each said, "No Tag Detected".  Also, Gamma to me is what happens in BETWEEN black and white, not affecting the blacks or whites.  Color sampling the darkest and lightest values of the screen capture suggested my blacks were now 24, 24, 24 and my whites were 234, 234, 234, almost (almost) as if they were 16-235 colors.
Anyone else experience this and possibly have a solution?
Thank you,
Marc

Thanks for writing back and promising to post additional information.
We've been chasing QuickTime issues for a while now, and we think that we got them pretty much dealt with (for the current state of QuickTime, anyway) in After Effects CS5. What version of After Effects are you using?
There's information about QuickTime and gamma here.
