Black/White preset error

In Illustrator CS3, the Black/White preset colors that show the fill and outline colors always default back to #231F20 & #ffffff instead of #000000 & #ffffff.  Also, whenever I save a document containing #000000, all the black opens as #231F20 gray.  It doesn't matter if it's RGB, CMYK, grayscale, whatever.  I don't care about the appearance looking gray.  I'm just bothered that blacks actually TURN to gray.  I want to uninstall and reinstall the program, but I'm moving and haven't found my disk yet.
-Amy

Answer to the question is when you create a print document the default is 100 K which in actuality is not a deep black. hence you get a accurate screen interpretation of it in document.
So the solution is to open a web document instead and you will find the default black to be sort of rich black but with the value of #000000.
You want a web document anyway.

  • Lightroom or Elements for a simple purpose - RAW to black&white

    Hi,
I have no experience whatsoever with digital photography, I've been working on analogue for several years now, but want to give it a try...
The thing is that I'm looking for a software, which will allow me:
    - possibility to convert color RAW from camera into black&white RAW, then export as a JPEG (I'd like to have a chance to enhance the contrast etc. on the RAW in b&w before having a final file, and maybe add option of plugins as NIK Silver Efex in the future if I feel a need for it)
    - add white frame around the JPEG, of which size I could choose, and maybe add my name/logo + date on the frame
I'm confused and don't know which software would allow me to do that two, simple things - Lightroom or Elements?
    Thanks for your support!

Elements is more limited in how to adjust the colors to black-and-white.
Lightroom has more sophisticated adjustments.  These adjustments are the same as in the Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop, but absent in the Camera Raw plug-in for Elements.  The adjustments allow you to enhance the contrast and brightness of the gray-level for narrow ranges of original colors instead of a simple removal of color with a default color-balance or clicking on a preset that Elements has.
Here is a very verbose video introduction to the LR B/W conversion on an example photo, viewed best in full-screen HD:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/bw_workflow_in_lightroom.shtml
Here is a step-by-step example with screenshots and description, from 2008, but the adjustments still mostly apply, except the vignetting you’d use wouldn’t be lens-related, it’d be the Post-Crop Vignetting in the Effects section that didn’t exist back in 2008:
    http://layersmagazine.com/create-stunning-black-and-white-images-in-lightroom.html
These were just the first and third links that showed up after Googling for Lightroom Black and White.
BTW, I am a photo-hobbyist and use Lightroom every day, so it’s not just for professionals making money off their photos that need something fast.  For me it is more about seriousness and perfection and freedom.

I got an iPOD Color Display last year, few days ago, it started going nuts. Windows were not recognizing etc.
After the restart-reboot-restore it has a Black/White GUI and still windows can not recognize it. Windows say that it is a generic USB hard drivem iTunes say that it needs to be restored (and after every restoration, it needs to be restored again, and it is not working anymore, even if it is alive).
iPOD's screen shows the exclamation mark over an envelope.
    HELP!!!
Is there any advance utility, which for example, could make iPOD an image of a filesystem, in order to everything be overwritten (factory settings)

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes

    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/

You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • How to export a CMYK document to a black/white or greyscale pdf for print?

Hello, I have some knowledge in graphics design, but very little about color management.
Currently I need to convert an instruction manual I made to black and white output only. We'd prefer to keep the indesign (.indd) and it's source images in their respective colors, but when exporting the document to a pdf my printer can use, we'd like to make that document a black and white pdf, as it's a black/white manual anyway. A little color conversion isn't to bad, as long as it's reasonable. all images that might give trouble are in greyscale anyway.
So how do I export a full color indesign document to a black&white/greyscale pdf?
    ps:
very newb question, but if you don't ask, you never learn:
When do you use the colours "registration", and when do you use "paper"?

I am also trying desperately to convert my CMYK colors into a grayscale so that when I print the document the printer only uses K (and C=0 M=0 Y=0)
And I saw this bit of info you wrote a few months ago. I am working working with photoshop CS4. I tried to follow it but I found the following difficulties. Hope you don't mind me writing over your text.
    RGB image --> Grayscale
New doc --> CMYK image, same size, empty
Copy Grayscale and paste into the K-channel of the CMYK image. - (It only allows me to copy onto the CMYK layer but not onto the Black so I had to Drag layer onto channel delete the black layer and rename my new layer as black but then the document changes from CMYK to Multichannel and I have to re-change the mode again to CMYK but this already prints CMYK...)
    Place image in InDesign doc.
Everything else (vector, text) by K-only.
(...then when I placet that CMYK file into InDesign, and PDF it, on the output preview still separates the grayscale image into CMYK and when I print, the printer still prints CMYK instead of only K)
So then I say OK so.. let's use the Multichannel document instead, which it actually seems to print on K only (while CMY=0), it only allows me to save as PSD. and when I try to place it on Indesign... I have a message saying that this file is using an unsupported colour space, only RGB,CMYK, lab, indexed, and bitmap are supported by the photoshop filter
On top of that I have been asked for a Jpeg image in black and white which prints only K (while CMY=0). I have tried with channel mixed presets and even though the info on screen is now C=0, M=0, Y=0 and K= various values, when I send it to print. The printer still prints with all the CMYK colours
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
    Thank you

  • My iPod displays black & white battery charge icon and sad iPod face. help!

I plugged my iPod into an older iMac; it froze and had to be restarted.
I restarted it and started listening on shuffle.
It would skip through all of my songs without me pressing any buttons.
I restarted again and it worked fine.
I came home and plugged it into my 10.3.9 iMac and the tracks started skiping and barely playing on iTunes.
I tried to eject it, but it wouldn't...so I unplugged it.
I then restarted it, but after the silver-on-black iMac icon came up, the sad iPod face showed.
So I pluged it back into the computer. It spontaniously restarted when I tried all of the steps of restarting and reinstalling.
Then it just displays a black& white old battery charge icon with a thunder bolt that flickers on the screen now and then.
And continues to restart itself with first the apple icon turning into the sad ipod face and then into the battery charge icon.
I really do not want to restore my iPod. I am hoping to keep my files but at this point, my future is bleak.
This happened last night. They said it might just be my battery so I kept it plugged in for about 10 hours. Nothing.
    What can I do?
    Please, please help.

  • How to Convert to Black & White?

I am currently using Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard Edition. I have a .pdf document that contains colored font. I want all the font to be black but nothing is working. I have tried to "print" to Adobe, selecting the Black & White option, but the color will not convert. I do not want to have to save my .pdf as another file, convert, and then re-.pdf it. Is there a way to convert to black and white within Acrobat itself?

    Thanks and blessings on you.
This worked for me when the "Convert to Composite gray" did not.
My starting pdf file was cmyk and the type was a 57% black boosted with 60-70% of the other process colors. Converting to composite gray gave me a medium dark gray type, not black; and "convert colors to black" worked for the type but blasted the illustrations.
Acrobat has so many damn settings and options; you suspect there must be one that will do what you want, but trial and erroring it can be a long and frustrating process. Bless you for sharing your expertise.

  • Black&White printing of a PDF file

Please suggest how to modify printer settings so that a pdf file prints only black&white even though the printer attached could be a colour printer.
I have checked printer setup->properties->advanced button in acrobat reader, but could not find option to make the print black & white only.

    Hi,
when i checked printer preferences advanced option, only following were visible, and none of them i suppose relates to black&white printing.
    <printer name> advanced document settings
    Paper/Output
    Copy Count

    Scaling
    True Type Font
    Document Options
    PostScript Options

  • Black & White Adjustment that retains same Greyscale values (when in Color)

    Hi all,
I noticed that when I apply a simple Black&White Adjustment layer to my colored layers, the 'Greyscale values' either via LAB sliders /HSb brightness changes drastically.:
    http://i57.tinypic.com/16ifm8n.png
eg the L slider for the turquoisy color jumps so much
I've tried the Hue/Saturation & Black&White adjustment layers with default settings. Can someone tell me a quick B&W workaround conversion that adheres as close as possible to sliders values when the adjustment layer is off?  I used it for digital coloring to check my composition 'values' regularly, so complex grayscale conversions would be less preferable. Also, I do not need it to be perfect to human vision, just hopefully adhere roughly to the 'L' or 'B' slider values when the B&W adjustment is turned on/off
    thanks alot!

I believe the tone shift to which you are referring is caused by the B&W adjustment layer as demonstrated here. This is the basic file (Adobe RGB):
Add a duplicate layer and change its Blending Mode to Luminosity. The colors will not change. Then add a Black & White Adjustment Layer and it will modify the resultant color like this:
For a clearer comparison, the image below shows the beginning image with the altered luminosity of the B&W Adjustment layer in the center circle
    (Notice Clipping Mask)
So, the default setting of the sliders that appear in the B&W drop-down menu must be adjusted so that, at the start, this Adjustment layer of the Luminosity does not alter the color. To do that, I had to change the settings to:
    Reds     33
    Yellows 90
    Greens     60
    Cyans     72
    Blues     14
    Magentas 46
You may save these settings as a Preset. so that they do not require resetting each time. The practical application of this is that it allows you to lighten and darken specific colors in a scene without resorting to selections. I have found this to be most useful in landscape images. (I overdid the changes in the sample below for demonstration purposes only.)

  • Printing black & white

    Hi,
I have only had a mac for a few months now and there is one thing I still can't figure out...
How can I set my printer to only print black & white, either for the job at hand or as a default.
I have the 2.16 Core Duo 15" MBP with the Canon PIXMA iP5200.
I have wasted all my color ink on various items for school which only need to be in black and white.
    Adam

    Hi Adam
    In the Print Dialogue box
    ColorSync
Quartz Filter, choose black and White.
If you do this a lot you can set up a Preset, say called B&W, save it to the chosen setting, and then next time just select it.

  • MF imageclass 4350 (black &white laser printer) compatible with WINDOWS 8.1?

MF imageclass 4350 (black &white laser printer) compatible with WINDOWS 8.1?   WINDOWS 8.1 recognizes I have printer attached, but it says flatly "No driver!"  I have run all the drivers from CANON and then attached the printer.   But, still it doesn't work!   Nothing from CANON sez" SETUP...........

    Hi mybrojer.
I will be glad to assist you.
The file that you download from the Canon website is .ZIP file.  When you select [RUN], it unpacks the setup folder.  Please disconnect the printer from the computer and follow the instructions below to install the printer:
    Open your [Downloads] folder.
You will see two icons with the name: MF4350_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN.exe. Double-click on the yellow folder icon with this name.
In the folder you will see two listings for [Setup].  Double-click on the [Setup] that has the type as [Application].
The "MF Drivers Setup Wizard" will open.  Proceed through the steps and restart the computer.
After restarting the computer, connect the USB cable and allow the installation to complete.
    Print a document.
I hope that this information is helpful to you.  Should the error persist, or your need further assistance, please contact us at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666).

  • Why, when I save a .BMP as Black & White, it is 256 color?

    AAARRRGGHhh!!!!!
I HATE the MS Paint in Win 7!!!
I want to save a .BMP with just TWO colors - Black & White -  for use in another program where I import a .BMP.
However I can't import since I get an error that the .BMP is more than 256 colors....EVEN AFTER I SAVED AS BLACK & WHITE!!
IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!!!

    Hi,
This is just a warning to in case you do some mishandling.
You can save the original picture in the desktop, then launch paint program. Click  ->Open to import the picture.
Then save as "Monochrome Bitmap(*.bmp;*.dib)" tape, you will get the black&white picture.

  • Black, white and colour?

Hey I'm new to Elements 10, and was wondering how to produce an image that is in black and white but, say, have a flower in colour? Much help is needed please!!

You can also do it manually. You need to duplicate your color photo.  1. Open your color photo in PSE10 Full Edit
    2. On the Top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    3. On the top menu click Enhance >>Convert to Black & White >>OK
    4. If you can’t see the layers pallet to the right click Window >>Layers
    5. At the bottom of the layers pallet click add layer mask (the icon with a small circle)
    6. Make sure your foreground color is set to black then select the brush tool
    7. Click the mouse over the area where you wish to reveal color and use like an eraser to reveal the background below
    8. To correct errors switch the foreground color to white, then switch back to black and continue
N.B. if your brush is too big or too small you can use the square bracket keys to adjust the size up or down.
The smart brush tool involves making selections which can be more tricky than using the ordinary brush.

  • No black & white filters in Aperture 3?

Am I missing something? Did Apple remove the option to use Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, & Blue filters when doing black & white conversions?
    What were they thinking?
Am I just not seeing it?

It's now part of the Adjustment Presets at the top of the adjustment tab.

  • Black&White adjustment layer problem

    Hi all,
When I try to apply a black&white adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 Ext., I get the dreaded message: "Could not complete yor request because of a program error". This is true for Tiffs and PSDs (8bit multi layered or 8bit flat) but not for jpegs. Is this a bug or a feature? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for you time,
    Francois Hendrickx
    Amsterdam

Could be a hardware acceleration issue with the b&w effect. Turn off OpenGL to verify. also make sure your adjustment layer is not clipped/ masked/ repositioned/ smaller than your comp. Remeber: The adjustment layer merely defines the area to which the effect will be applied, the actula processing still happens on the buffer below it. For anything else we will need more info ansd screenshots. We do not even know what version of AE you are referring to.
