  • Updating core applications and system software

    Hi all,
Happy New Year!  Hope 2010 will be a better year than 2009.
I have a BB 8703e with core applications and system software version 4.1. Can I and how would I get to update/upgrade to version 4.2 at least?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi there!
The carriers release the device OS for their users -- since they are responsible for support, it is their choice to release a version to their users. You can find their download site via this portal:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
In all cases, you should take a manual backup before proceeding:
KB12487 How to backup data on a BlackBerry smartphone
Then follow your carriers instructions for installation (found on their DL site above).
If you wish to bypass your carriers sanctioned device OS level, then you will need these instructions to install:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that, if you bypass your carriers approved level, you will likely be refused further support from them.
Good luck and let us know!

  • How can you change the font size in the application and system headers?

How can you change the font size in the application and system headers?  I searched the system and finder prefs to no avail.  Changing the screen density is not a good option.
    Thanks

I downloaded Tinkertool.  Found the font section and increased the size of most selections.  The only thing that changed that I can see is the window label.  The apple line, bookmarks line, the tool bar in safari are all the same---font size of about 4.  Found the finder "show view options" but that didn't seem to change anything either.  I'll keep working.  Restarted all apps after changes as well.

  • Applications and system buttons have dissappeared from desktop-how can I get them back?

These buttons moved to a vertical position on the left edge of the screen, then the applications and system buttons disappeared,so I am unable to access the word processor. I need some advice as to how to reset the system so that these items are permanently on the desktop.

  • Blackberry System software, core applications, and all non-third party apps are missing

I'm using a BB Torch 9800. I just upgraded to the latest and greatest Desktop Software to 6.0.1 from 6.0, and all the subject items are missing from the Applications area. I tried going back to 5.0 since 6.0 is not available. Same problem there. Did a clean uninstall per the KB article, and reinstalled 6.0.1. Still no luck. Also tried installing the AT&T 9800 device software. No luck. If I go to import files I can find the alx files from AT&T, but they will not import. How can I get the Blackberry stuff back? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The device software is indeed required unless its doing an upgrade via the web. That means that DM contacts your carrier for the latest OS for your device and if it sees you need an upgrade then it will download and install automatically.
Did you download the OS from your own carrier or another carrier? Try going to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file called "vendor.xml". Then try again.

  • Application and Oracle software in One file system.

    DB Version:11g
We have a relatively busy OLTP financial application installed on the same file system as oracle software (ORACLE_HOME). Is it a good idea to install applications on the same file system as ORACLE_HOME? Will Oracle recommend this?

    - you have a decent system administratoir who knows how to monitor disk I/O and that monitoring does not show I/O contention
    - you have decent (tested) backups and a good database backup strategy
    - you are happy with performance
    - your compliance auditors are satisfied
then there should be no real issue.
Will Oracle recommend this?Oracle will probably not get involved other than to discuss High Availability scenarios and point you to things like the Maximum Availability Architecture white papers at http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/maa.htm .
Now if you contracted their consulting/services group, they would likely do an evaluation of your specific needs and likely recommend separating things as a result of that evaluation.

  • Application and system prefs errors after restoring user

When I try to open a few of my applications, I'm getting this error message: "[application] cannot be opened because of a problem."  And something about check with the developer for compatibility with this version of OSX.  This is happening with all the iLife apps and Mail, as well as Logic 9.
I'm also getting an error when trying to open certain panes of system preferences (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5082670?start=0&tstart=0).
Unfortunately, every time I search up help on this issue, I can only find topics regarding Lion and Mountain Lion - but I am on Snow Leopard and this is happening!
Recently, I went through a process of renaming my main user, by deleting it but keeping the files, changing the deleted user name, and restoring the user: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2302635?start=0&tstart=0.
Everything else seems to work fine, except for these 2 problems.
I have already: (a) Unchecked 32-bit mode for system prefs, (b) Deleted proper prefs files in the Library (com.apple.prefs....), (c) Tried launching apps from terminal, (d) Tried deleting aliases to apps and restoring them.
Nothing is working!  I am about to back-up my system and re-install Snow Leopard, but I wanted to explore other avenues first.
    Thank you!

Reinstall SL. Only OS X components and basic Apple apps will be replaced. Then, run the 10.6.8 v 1.1 COMBO updater.

  • Polling application and System.gc()

I discovered that a polling AIR application slowly uses more and more memory, probably because of the garbage collection algorithm.
These two screen shots show the memory usage displayed in the Flex profiler of an application that polls XML data from a Web server every 3333 ms:
As you can see, the application slowly uses more and more memory, because the GC does not run until it needs more memory. Each time it hits the threshold, it reserves additional memory for one RPC run and then collects the memory.
This is the same application, but it has an callLater(System.gc) in the result event of the HTTPService. Memory usage stays flat:
Is there another solution to this behaviour than calling System.gc()?

Thanks for your suggestion, but here are more details about the application:
It is a very simplistic application, there are no objects being created programmatically. HTTPService.send() is being called in a Timer, and then HTTPService.lastResult.someXMLList is being bound to the dataProvider of some DataGroups which are reusing there children if I am not mistaken. I assume the additional memory being reserved is used by the internal result object structure of the HTTPService.

  • Installing applications and/or software

    I'm new to Mac.
When I install some software or downloads I get a dialog box that says "select an application to copy to" or something like that. Nothing that I select works to accept the downoad or program. What do I do next?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
New to Mac? Well, if you are used to the Windows operating system then this link is a great user guide for "switching" from Windows to the Mac OS:
    http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
When you download software, are you talking about 3rd party software, meaning non-Apple? If you could post the url here so we can see which software you are referring to that would help.

  • Problems with Applications and Overall Software

Recently, my computer has been acting strange. I have only had my MacBook for 1 year. My applications have trouble working when I have a couple of them open. I am constantly getting the color spinning wheel, and when I am using iTunes my music stops and starts randomly. I have tried deleting my preferences folder, using Onyx and cocktail to fix and clean up my computer. Someone please help I do not want to have to get a new computer after 1 year. Do I need more RAM or something? I am only using 20% of mac's memory. It is really slowing me down from doing my work. Ask me for more information if I have forgotten anything.

I think you've misunderstood. It's recommended to have a minimum of 10% free space left on your hard drive not 90% free space. I don't think the amount of data stored on your hard drive is the problem you're having.

  • Can time machine be told to selectively backup applications and folders?

I need to perform a backup of the drive so that I can do a complete reinstall, however I cannot see any way to manually backup things like iTunes, it's library and settings, and a selection of installed programs such as say, adium, which has chat transcripts (not limited to that app and probably a bad example)
A reinstall through time machine is not an option, since from what I can see the basic install takes a disk image so the problems I currently have would be restored (self inflicted, deliberately, too long to explain but part of learning thingy)
If it's not possible in Time machine is there an alternative program or even a way to do this manually? I don't mind a little work.
    Thanks!

It doesn't have an option to easily select only specific directories or files. It only has the option to exclude files & directories. (It's function is to backup everything initially, then backup anything that has changed since it's previous backup.)
However, unless your self-inflicted problem is in an issue with something in your user accounts folders, you can bypass restoring it you do a re-install followed by a Time Machine restore.
When you install Snow Leopard, you'll see the "out of the box experience" (the welcome video, followed by the country selection, owner registration questions, etc..) Part of the OOTB is the "Setup Assistant" which will ask if you want to migrate from either another Mac, disk, Time Machine backup, Time Capsule, etc.
If you tell it you DO want to migrate/restore from a Time Machine it will selectively offer a few categories of things to restore. These include user accounts (all or nothing... you can't restore one account but ignore others), applications, and system settings.
This means you could do a re-install, then restore your user accounts -- even your applications if you want, without restoring other parts of the OS (for example if you think your system settings are damaged you can choose not to restore those.)
Lastly... you could opt to restore nothing at all and just re-create a user account. If you right-click on the Time Machine icon down in the dock, one of the options is to "Browse Other Time Machine Disks..." By clicking this you can open a backup and individually decide which files to restore -- being as selective as you wish.

  • Desktop Software 6.0 (PC) does not show OS 6 system software and core applications

I have installed DM 600_b047 on my PC (running WinXP w/ SP3). I have also installed both OS 6.0.0_rel862 and 5.0.0_rel1385 on the same PC. When I connect my Bold 9000 to the PC, DM shows everything that is installed on the device. However, when disconnect the Bold and I connect my Torch 9800, DM shows only the third-party apps installed on the device. DM does not show the System Software, Core Applications, Phone, etc. that are installed on the Torch.
On another PC (also WinXP w/ SP3), I have installed the same DM and OS software. DM on the latter PC shows all System Software, Core Apps, 3rd-party apps, etc. of both the Bold and Torch.
I would appreciate any suggestions how to get my other PC to show all BB software installed on the Torch. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the DM and OS software on the one PC. It did not resolve my issue.
    Thank you.

Here's how I resolved my issue:
    1. On the DM's Applications page, click the "Import files" button.
    2. Drill down to the folder containing the .alx files of the BB OS. In my case, that would be "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9800M_v6.0.0.284_P6.4.0.120"
    3. Select the alx files shown.in the files window..
    4. Click the "Open" button of the dialog box.
    5. Wait for DM to finish processing the selected files.
Voila! Now I see all the apps.
Maybe RIM's software and/or system engineers can explain how the DM software got into the condition where it apparently had not selected the .alx files.

What do I need to do differently?

The late, great Pondini was investigating that issue before he passed away.
    See here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5125969
I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.
