Blackberry 8520 - Generic Data Plan

I just recently purchase a 3G generic data plan for my blackberry 8520 under a mistake. I understand that this plan is not suitable for bbm or any other RIM services, however I expected that I could still use third-party application like Whatsapp, Opera Browser, etc, based on facts from (http://www.ehow.com/how_7664566_use-blackberry-generic-data-plan.html, http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/How_to_use_BlackBerry_on_Generic_Data_Plan).
Can anyone help me to explain a further setting for this phone? I contacted my carrier but they have no idea how to set a generic data plan to work on my phone!

There was a recent data plan released for this smartphone and basic feature phones. is it required that you do need a data plan for the blackberry just like it is optional for the basic feature phones.

  • What does the Blackberry 29.99 data plan include?

I understand the unlimited internet and email usage, but does using the AOL AIM and BBM use as internet or text messaging?

Messages sent using BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry PIN to PIN Messaging are covered under the required data plan. This also includes AOL IM. Hope this helps!

  • How to download an app without a data plan?

Hi all.  My dad has a Blackberry Curve but no data plan.  He wants to download an app for his phone that autolocks it after the backlight dims.  I guess the way you'd typically download the app is you purchase it and they email a link to you to your Blackberry email but if you don't have email access on your phone, is there any other way to get the app on his phone?  Like, can he somehow download it to his regular desktop computer and then transfer it using Blackberry Desktop Manager?
    Thanks in advance!

    hello,
to install an application you can :
install it and download it from the web using the BlackBerry browser (requires data plan or Wi-Fi connection)
download the install file to a PC computer and use Desktop Manager's module "Applications" to install the application on the device through Desktop Manager (requires a PC with a USB cord)
    use AppWorld (requires data plan)
first is made using a set of files which extensions end with jar/jad.
second is made using a set of files which extensions end with alx/cod.

  • Necessary data plan?

Ok i have a Lg chocolate touch now..only texting and calling no data... and i'm planning to switch to a blackberry. At first i wanted a Droid Incredible but from hearing about the expensive data plan i didn't want it anymore. I hear that there is a possibility that you can get a blackberry witout data plan. I just want texting and calling in the blackberry, is tht possible? Can i convince customer service to just give me texting and calling and no data? Ik for all smartphones it requires to have data i'm just rly curious if it's possible to have texting and calling in the blackberry i hear u could. Thx!

It's not possible to activate or use a BlackBerry without a data plan. However, you can add the $15/150MB plan if you don't want the $30 unlimited plan.

  • Blackberry Curve 8520 (o2) - No data plan - Using browser purely with wifi?

    I have just got a Blackberry curve 8520. I'm on o2.
I haven't got a plan that includes data, so was wondering how I can use my Blackberry internet over wifi.
Under mobile network settings I've disabled data services, so I don't get charged for data without me knowing.
I've also changed my browser configuration to Hotspot browser, and its found my Wireless network okay and saved.
However when I go on browser, It just keeps coming up with unable to connect to the internet.
    Am I doing anything wrong?

I dont have a data plan (work phone) and can get internet through wifi, and have done so without any issue.
check 'Menu', 'Manage Connections', Wifi is ticked, with network name in Green
check your using Hotspot Browser, (you did say this, I know).  So it definately says Hotspot Browser at the top of the browser when open rather O2 Active (or similar)
I'll keep looking to see if there are any settings I can find which could help

  • Do i need a Blackberry SIM (Data plan to get connected)

Hello, i have recently purchased a blackberry playbook 32GB.
    i have below queries.
    1. Do i need to have a BB data plan to get connected..even for the first time or may be later too.
    2. Can a micro SIM with normal 2G or 3G data plan work on it say from AIRTEL or VODAFONE.
    3. I tried connecting my Nokia E6 as a WIFI hotspot (using JOKU) , but playbook does not detect so..however it detects all other WIFI spots say from SAMSUNG phone.
    4. Finaly i got connected with WIFI hotspot provided by SAMSUNG phone and was able to register. But that may not be always available with me. Thats where my second/third  question is important.
    5. After getting connected as in point 4, software upgrade was in process which was interupted owing to low internet speed. (being EDGE n/w). i am sure after S/W update i shall be able to use it for other purpose.
    6. Even if i get a BLACKberry data plan micro SIM, will it work on NON BB smart phones?
    7. I am new to BLACKBERRY, please help me.

My first guess is that you bought a former Sprint (US) Playbook, which might not be operable in India.
I just don't know. You might try to return it to your eBay seller and get your money back and purchase a known working device.
    Does it connect to WiFi?

  • No data on BlackBerry 10 even with a working data plan

    Hi,
Q10, unlocked, 10.1.0.4181, Estonian SIM card with a working data plan, correctly set APN, a bunch of restarts, etc - still no data connectivity. With WiFi on, data works, BBM works, everything except for the App World (which is n/a here) works.
Now. Where is the problem, and how do we solve it? I'm not going to be very keep on accepting answers like "lol you've just spent 650 EUR on a phone and a 10EUR/mo data plan with a 12 months contract which you can throw out of the window."
Thank you kindly for your answers and suggestions.

So, have you specifically asked your carrier about any of this, or are you operating purely on assumption? You see, it's entirely possible that your carrier has erroneously mis-provisioned something about your plan, and that's what is causing you to not have any services. It's also possible that you simply cannot have the services you desire on this carrier. But, as has been from the start here, only your carrier can answer these questions, for we have no visibility into anything beyond the words you provide us here -- and so far, all of those words indicate that you must have a discussion with your carrier, but for some reason you are refusing to do so...I really don't understand why you are so reluctant...
    Good luck!

  • I am looking into Buying Retail a New Blackberry Q10. Doing this to avoid having to Give up my old Data Plan. Have read that when you activate a new Phone it forces you to pick a new Plan. Is this True? and How to I avoid this? 20 Year Verizon Client

I am looking into Buying Retail a New Blackberry Q10. Doing this to avoid having to Give up my old Data Plan. Have read that when you activate a new Phone it forces you to pick a new Plan. Is this True? and How to I avoid this? Any other advise in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    20 Year Plus Verizon Client

The only "unlimited" plan I can think of where this would not apply is the old Connect plan for multimedia/basic phones.  That unlimited data, on devices such as the LG Voyager, EnvTouch, and other "multimedia" devices is  not the same.
If you currently have an individual $29.99 unlimited data plan with a 3G Smartphone, then you can buy a BBQ10 retail and activate it with the same data plan and keep the unlimited.

  • If I buy a used Blackberry, do I need or do they automatically add data plan? I don't want it

I can upgrade, but not really sure if I want to pay an additional $30 for a data plan. I was thinking of buying a used blackberry first, can I use it for txt and calls, or do I need to add a data plan for it to work?
I wish I could get the $9.99 plan, but the phones are junk.....help

If you activate a smartphone on the Verizon network, it will automatically add the $29.99/month unlimited data feature to your account.
These phones do NOT need data to FUNCTION, and they could make calls, send texts, use wifi, etc. just fine without Verizon's data plan.  Verizon chooses to require you to pay for the data plan in order to access the privelege of activating that type of device on their network.
The phones which require the $9.99/month plan ARE generally a bad value.  They make poor use of the data feature, and they will probably never be free of that requirement.  I would suggest looking at older 3GMM type phones.  Models like the enV2 and original Samsung Alias do not require the data plan but offer more substantial feature sets and higher quality than the currently available "Feature" phones.
Thanks, it just seems crazy. I am eligible for 4 of my phones, for the "FREE PHONE EVERY 2 YRS", and it almost seems like I am down grading? We have a LG voyager, and 3 LG dares. There are no phones in the verizon line that compare to these with out going to a 9.99 or 29.99 extra/mth charge? It just does not seem right?
    Am I missing something?

  • Blackberry VS Droid Phone :  Grandfathered Unlimted Data Plan???

I currently have a Blackberry Curve 8330 smartphone and am waiting for the new Motorola Bionic smartphone.  Since my current plan has an "unlimited data plan," will this carry over to the Bionic when I switch since these two phones are both smart phones, or will I need to go to the new tiered plans  I am under the assumption smart phone to smart phone unlimited data plans will be grandfathered from old to new.
My current plan is the "Nationwide Talk 450" with $5.00 unlimited M2M Message w/50Msg, 15 N/C bonus minutes and an 8% discount based on where I am employed.  I've been on this plan for many many years.
Someone please advise me.  Thank you!!!

If you currently have unlimited data on a smartphone, you will be able to keep the feature if you upgrade to another smartphone.  It does not matter if they are different types (Blackberry vs. Android vs. Apple).

  • Unable to use my Blackberry Tour in the UK even WITH Global data plan

    Hi,
I just flew into the UK and was disappointed to see that my phone service or data service is not enabled.
Prior to flying in(10-12 hours ago) I called Verizon customer service, and validated that I had a Global Blackberry Data Plan, and the customer service rep assured me that my phone will work without any issues once I get into the UK. So I didn't bother taking my "other" older AT&T phone(which I keep just in case) with me.
Now I'm stuck here for 3 weeks without any phone or data service! It's pretty crippling..and the best part is, I'll be charged as per my monthly plan regardless, when I get back.
    Any help or suggestions?

I have provided some information below, that may be helpful in using your Blackberry Tour in the U.K.
After steps 1 and 2 below, if you are still receiving a red SOS symbol in the upper right hand corner of the device (your SIM card is either missing out of the device, or it has not been activated on the billing side).
**The steps below are assuming the SIM card and Global plan were already activated.
Step 1. – Ensure your device is set to Global or GSM (I have provided a link below on checking this setting)
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=24732&p=null
***If it is on Global already, ensure the “Data Services” section are “ON” and select GSM as the Network Technology (3g and 2g is preferred)
***Please note*** you will need to switch it back to Global once you are back in the United States.
Step 2. Try power cycling the mobile network (I have provided a link below)
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=24687&p=null
**leave the network off for 15-20 seconds and turn it back on.
Step 3. Try a soft reset - Remove the battery off of  the device and leave it out for at least 2 minutes. Place the battery back in and wait for the device to fully boot up (it may take 2-5 minutes for the device to fully boot)
Lastly, if you are still getting the SOS symbol in red, you can check to see if your device has a SIM card by doing the following:
    http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=30045&p=null
**Use the via device option (if it has an 893144***** number then your SIM card is in the device).
    I hope this helps.

  • Twitter & Facebook Dosnt work with my full blackberry data plan .. ?

    Hi Guys,
I buy new Blackberry Curve 9360,
Facebook & twitter applications Dosn't work in my Device,
" you are currently on a service plan that does not support this application, please contact to wifi network or contact your service provider to upgrade your data plan" this message show up, I am using a full plan
How can these apps work with 3G & EDGE ?
they work with wifi but not on mobile network
    Thanjs

If you BIS service status is "Not Connected", I certainly wouldn't be able to send you a PIN message.
I recommend you call your mobile provider and ask if your plan has been removed from your account or something, because it isn't working, and isn't connected.
    YOU can try these things:
    1) Register HRT:     (OS5) Homescreen > Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table > Scoll to any line entry and > press the Menu key  > and then click Register Now.
    2) Resend Service Books:   KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Hopefully that will get things going again for you!
