  • Clean wiped Mac, can't re-install Mavericks anymore.

So, I have a MacBook Pro that was running Mavericks that I recently tried to factory reset with a clean wipe. However, I didn't realize until after wiping my machine that Mavericks is no longer available on the app-store and I haven't previously purchased it either. I don't have any backups either, so there's nothing I can restore. So now I'm stuck with an empty machine that only gives me the option to install Mavericks, which is obviously unavailable.
I'm willing to upgrade to Yosemite (though I'd prefer to stay with Mavericks) if there's a way to install it onto the machine. Anything to get this thing running on an OS again.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Is this what you're seeing (or something very similar)?
If so, that's the recovery mode work screen. It looks the same in either recovery mode. The main difference is Command+R boots to the hidden recovery partition on the hard drive, and Command+Option+R boots to the firmware and isn't working off of the hard drive at all.
Disk Utility can't be the function asking to reinstall Mavericks since it has no part in installing the OS. That would be the Reinstall Mac OS X button.
It keeps trying to download Mavericks because that's what's on the hidden recovery partition. You need to remove that so the Mac is forced to install its original OS.
Startup, or restart the Mac and immediately hold down the Command+Option+R keys to boot into Internet Recovery Mode. Note: it's better to use a wired Ethernet connection to your cable or DSL modem rather than wireless for this.
You will get what looks the same as a normal recovery mode restart, except you're working off the firmware rather than the hidden recovery partition. You need to do this so Disk Utility can wipe the drive since you can't remove the startup partition out from under yourself if you used Command+R.
Launch Disk Utility and select the physical drive name in the left pane.
With the physical drive selected, click on the Partition tab to the right. Where the graphical display of the current drive layout says Current…
…change it to anything other than Current. If the drive is one partition for the whole thing, and that's what you want, then choose 1 Partition from the drop down menu. Note that the hidden partition is not shown in this display unless you turn Disk Utility's debug menus on (you can't do this in Recovery Mode). It is there, and that's what you need to get rid of by repartitioning it.
I'm going to assume one partition as your choice. After changing the menu to 1 Partition, give the drive any name you want in that field. Click the Options button to make sure the radio button choice is GUID (it already should be). The format should also default to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply. It will take just 10 seconds or so to repartition the drive.
Quit Disk Utility to get back to the main menu and choose to reinstall OS X. With no reference for any other OS on the drive, the Mac will reinstall the original OS it came with from Apple's servers. It will also recreate a new hidden recovery partition to match the OS level it installs.
Once it's done and the Mac restarts to the newly reinstalled OS, you can either apply any updates available and leave it at that OS, or you can create your own App Store account and then "purchase" and install Yosemite, 10.10.x.

  • CS5 installed on Mac--can I also install on Windows 7 w/Bootcamp

So I'm not loving my Macbook Pro for several reasons. However, I have quite a bit of money sunk into CS5 Web Premium, Acrobat Pro 9, and Premiere Elements 9. I'm wondering if I can simply install Bootcamp, install Windows 7, and then install my Adobe programs on the Windows side? It's the same computer, after all. My licenses also list both Mac and Windows serial numbers. I assume the S/N is what I need to activate (IT did that for me the first time).
    Thanks for any advice!

No, you'll need to call Adobe and swap the Mac license for a Windows license. This can be done for a nominal cost and you will have to destroy the Mac media and uninstall the software. You'll be asked to submit paperwork attesting the fact that you've done that.
Note: this is only possible for current versions.

  • BlackBerry Blend won't open on Mac OS X 10.10

    Hi there,
I just recently got my BlackBerry Passport (awesome device!) and wanted to try BLEND on my MacBook Air.
My MacBook runs the Golden Master of Apples latest OS (10.10).
Blend installed fine and Link is working correctly. When I try to open Blend the icon just bounces up and down in the dock and after 5 - 7 seconds it stops bouncing. Blend didn't open and did not give out any error messages.
I tried uninstalling, cleaning and re-installing, nothing solved the problem.
Is anybody experiencing the same issues or does anyone have a solution or ideas on how to solve it?
    Thx an advance!

  • Why can't I install iTunes version 10.5 or higher? I've tried everything suggested on this forum, my friend has a mac and she can't either and it seems like the main problem is the apple Mobile device.exe wont install and applesync

    Hey anybody,
Neither myself (running on PC windows vista 32 bit) or my friend (on a mac) are able to install versions of iTunes around 10.5 or higher successfully. This leads me to believe the problem isn't necessarily with our computers and there may be something wrong elsewhere. I'm not a computer wiz but I have tried most of the advice on these forums e.g. Uninstalling and reinstalling, deleting temporary files, expanding files and trying individual downloads and more. I can install older versions of iTunes where they use to combine it with QuickTime with no problems however this is no good to me or my friend because only versions 10.5 and up come with support with iPhone 4S and that's what we need. I managed after several attempts to install iTunes 10.52 but without the apple mobile device so therefor the iTunes wouldn't connect to my phone or recognise it, apple sync notifier also has problems and fails to start.
Please can someone help me with this, I have tried everything on the apple troubleshooting pages so please don't link me those. Or please can iTunes and apple do something in an update that corrects this problem because I know many people are having similar issues. I only bought this phone for the music and at the moment I feel cheated because I wouldn't have these problems with any other phone because I'd just be able to drag and drop.

    Hi there,
I had the same experience. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, with Windows 7 Home Edition, 32 bit.
I tried to install iTunes 10.5 and it started installing, then, just before the end of the process, came up with the following error message:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Of course, no information on what the program that couldn't be run was! At first I tried the usual stuff, like scanning for viruses etc. but nothing doing. Then I started Googling. In the end, I uninstalled all Apple stuff from my computer. A lot of it I had to do manually, going in to the program files drive and deleting stuff from there, but some of it wouldn't delete as it was saying it was open in Windows Explorer. In the end, I managed to delete the iTunes folders by selecting one of my mp3 tracks saved on the computer and right clicking 'open with'. I then browsed my pc to locate the iTunes folders still outstanding and was able to right click and delete them that way.
Then emptied the recycle bin and did a restart before going online and downloading iTunes 10.5.
Thankfully it worked, but its taken me a good few hours and made me really quite tetchy! I've never had this problem before, so I hope this is going to be a one off.
One thing that doesn't seem to be working is that, despite how many times I tell it that my preference is for the iTunes Media folder to be located on my external hard drive, it keeps putting it back to the C drive! Didn't have that issue with the last version. Grrrrrr. Arrrrgggh.
Hope you manage to get yours sorted - this is affecting a lot of people by the look of things.

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.

  • Downloaded mavericks for one mac can i use the same download to install on another mac

I have downloaded for 12 hours initial installation on one mac for mavericks, and all installed successfully. Rather than download again for another mac, can I use the same download and copy on to the other mac..and if yes, where will I find it?

All you need to do is go to System Preferences > App Store and uncheck the automatic install of updates box, then download the Mavericks installer, and copy to a flash drive.  You will need a flash drive of 8 G B or more since the installer is around 5.3 GB.  The installer will be in Finder > Applications.  You can then copy that flash drive installer to the Applications folders in all the Macs you have that are capable of running Mavericks, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
When the installer runs, the last step in the installtion is for the installer to erase itself.  So makng a copy before the installer runs is essential if you want to avoid redownloading.
Installing from the same installer does not cause problems for Macs on the same network.

  • How many macs can I install Logic studio on?

Ok so i recently bought my first ever iMac.
And i installed logic studio on it, but I am considering a Mac Pro because honestly; i love my iMac but i kind of just want this imac for 'personal' things (movies, music, family photos, videos ect.)
    and I want a Mac Pro just for logic and any other PRO apps I buy later on. So i was wondering if anyone can help me with the question i have;
How many macs can I install Logic studio on?

It's in your Logic Studio license agreement:
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you. This License does not allow the Apple Software to run on more than one computer at a time.

  • How many macs can I install lion onto

If I install Lion onto my imac can I also put it onto my macbook or do I have to purchase several copies?

How To: Install OS X Lion on Multiple Macs
Psst. Here’s a little-known secret that very few people know — even though Apple has done nothing to keep it a secret. One $29.99 purchase of Lion gets you an unlimited license to download it on as many Macs as you like. And it’s super simple to do, too.
    Mac App Store
Corporate logic would dictate that one install of an operating system would equate to one purchase. But that’s not true of Lion, Apple’s latest iteration of its popular OS X operation system. With Lion, one purchase equals as many installations as you please — on as many computers as you like.
Say you’ve already downloaded and installed Lion on your primary Mac, but you want to put it on a second machine. Maybe it’s your spouse’s Mac, or a parent or child, or even a friend, for that matter. Heck, it can be your boss at work if you want to suck up. Or just a total stranger on the street. You can give anyone you want a free download of Lion. Whether they use an iMac or a MacBook, it doesn’t matter. And it won’t cost you one extra cent. You just have to get brief access to their computer. Here’s what to do.
On the second (or third, or fourth, etc.) Mac you want to install Lion on, open the Mac App Store.
Go to the “Store” drop-down menu, and click on “Sign Out.” Then go back to the same menu and click “Sign In.”
Here’s the key point. When the drop-down menu appears, sign in to this computer using the Apple ID that you used to download your original purchase of Lion.
Click on the “Purchased” tab at the top of the App Store. You’ll be presented with a list of every app you’ve ever downloaded for your Mac. Find “OS X Lion” on this list. It should look like this:
To the far right of Lion should be a button that says “Install.” Click it. You’ll probably get another drop-down menu asking for your password again. Just put it in and your download will begin immediately.
Once the download is complete (which will take a while — it’s 4GB in size after all!) and the installation is done, remember to go back to the Mac App Store and sign out, so the user of this computer can sign back in with their Apple ID.

  • Late 2008 macbook 13" prompts mac OS can not be installed on this computer after booting from disc as l get the folder with the question mark screen. New HDD or ?

From the little research l have done, l have been convinced l may be having a dead hard drive though after having tried all the other troubleshooting tips found here, when trying to boot l get the grey screen and folder with the question mark suggesting it can not find the files neccessary to boot hence l tried booting with the disc and the message l get is that mac OS X can not be installed on this computer, though after doing the hardware check etc they all say okay. I've even tried erasing the drive and trying to instal the OS afresh with no luck. Any ideas or l must just get a new hard drive?

Pretty sure BGreg hit the nail on the head. If your hard drive was failing, you would still be able to at least attempt an install, provided your ard drive was mounting. You usually get that message when the disk is incompatible with the computer. If it is the proper disk, you might try erasing the disk (provided your info is backed up) using Disk Utility (under Utilities in the menubar) and choose the Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format.

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.

  • Can't download/install on upgraded 2006 Mac Mini

I have a c 2006 Mac Mini which I have recently upgraded with a Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM. The Mini currently runs OS X v. 10.6.8. I bought a copy of OS X 10.7 Lion from the App Store. Even though my Mac now meets the minimum requirements for Lion, the App Store says my Mac is incompatible and won't download the Lion software.
Interestingly, the error messages I get from the App Store from my attempts to purchase/download 10.7 and 10.8 are different:
When I tried to buy and download 10.8 Mountain Lion, I get "We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer.". When I tried to buy and download 10.7 Lion instead, I get "This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer.".
Is there any way I can force this install to start?

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you won't get the reset option - you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get the questions reset
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
