Blackberry-like Experience with Mac Server

I am seriously considering moving to Mac-based mail (specifically Kerio mail) from MS Exchange. I need an answer to the "smart phone" question. This is the only application I think I can't find an alternative to for this switch...
We currently use Blackberrys and the very expensive Blackberry enterprise server. I am willing to consider other smart phones, I'm not married to the BB.
But we need the kind of integrated mail experience of the BB: push mail, read/write/synch mail (reading on the handheld shows read on the server, sent mail is in the server "sent" box, etc.), read attachments (at least .pdf), live calendar synch, etc.
I see Kerio's "mini" browser app, but does that really do it? Don't I have to be in the browser on the phone for this to be useful?
Are there other applications/phones that have the kind of Blackberry experience, with a server based on OS X?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Not to sound insulting, and I can't speak for anyone else, but it seems like there are far less road warriors using macs, and I gaurantee many of them would be far less likely to use a windows like OS on a mobile phone. I personally have never been happy with any OS on any phone I have owned (samsung, motorola, nokia, etc. ALL ******!), and we have some more "road-warrior" executive types here who have the fatty nextel "windows mobile OS'es" on them and god dang it they are clunky, worse than windows, I coudn't beleive it myself.
Can't wait for apple to come out with a pda or the iphone. Usability is just as important is functionality.
Not trying to flame, but I guess I didn't really offer any alternative's. Oh well.

    Thanks for your input.

  • Frame forwarding with mac server

    Hello,
I'm new with using Mac OS Server (version 10.6.7) and I have my own domain name. When someone my domain they are redirected to my ip-address at home. But when that happens the url changes from www.example.com to 11.22.345.345. So I selected "frame forwarding" to prevent this from happening. But now my site is inaccessible. I'm using the standard Mac Server site with the blog, calendar etc. I have little experience using web servers so please help me without making it all to difficult
    Thanks in advance,
    MBKTEL

Given you're obfuscating, I can't be certain, but given the combination of obfuscation and problems, you're probably on a residential service tier and using some form of dynamic DNS.  Public static DNS with public static IP connections generally don't have these issues.
The easiest way to do this is to set up public DNS to translate to your public static IP, port-forwarding at your gateway (and you probably want one of those) and it'll all work.  The public DNS is preferably at your ISP, as (for the security-related services including https and SMTP) your ISP controls reverse DNS translations.  This is the typical server-oriented connection.
Frame forwarding is a form of a reverse proxy scheme for web sites, and you likely don't want that.
Your public DNS should translate to your public static IP address, and not a redirect or frame-forward nor reverse proxy of any sort.
If you're using dynamic IP as I suspect here, then you're probably going to have all the usual issues that arise with network connectivity that result.  Dynamic DNS works for simple stuff and is adequate for client-oriented activities, but it doesn't work particularly well with server-oriented network operations, and server-oriented traffic on residential ISP service tiers can be and variously is blocked by the ISP.

  • How do I use my own domain name  with Mac server with iWeb

For a number of years I have had my own domain name that when typed into a browser it would redirect the browser to my site on the .Mac server. I hear with iLife ’08 I can have my own domain name hosted by .Mac so I know longer have to have the long addresses for each pages the I have now for my site (i.e. the http://web.mac.com/thewildhearts/WildheartPhotography/NatureGalleries.html). How do I go about getting my domain name (wildheartphotography.com) so that Mac will host it and do I need to notify the current host that Mac will be hosting my site now?
Thanks. I really appreciate the help I get from this forum.
    Pat

It's very easy, really. You go to your domain control and redirect the address. IPower, for example points the domain name very easily: you just type in the URL of your site and it will point to your mac server.
I've used GoDaddy before and it is a bit more difficult to "point".

  • Help needed with Mac Server set up

    Hi
I have purchased a mini mac server, that i want to use as a replacement for my windows home server, for basic back ups & to run a website with possible remote access.
At the initial configuration screen where if you manually configure your connection via ethernet, after putting the desired internal ip, sub net, router and DNS, it should find my domain on the next page where the server would be named. this does not happen, ( this is where i need the help )
    I have a domain name
fixed external ip with my it pointing to my domain name
and a RDNS setup with my ISP
    Any help?
you can email me directly : [email protected]
    many thanks

If you're running NAT, well, you have some choices on how you might choose to [set up DNS services|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436]. Once you get that sorted, there's a link there to the set-up for the public-facing (outside your external firewall) network configuration, too.

  • My 12 days experience with Mac mini (intel)

I bought a Mac mini 2 weeks ago (core duo, 1Gbyte RAM, 100Gbyte HD).
I have expected quite Mac mini, however my one was loud, in particular in an otherwise quite room. I’m still not clear from where the noise came. My best guess it is the motor of the fan, which was running all the time.
I called apple care and was told the mini should be quite and I could exchange the Mini, because is was still within the 14 days. My Mini was exchanged without problems.
For a new start, I couldn’t use the Mini at all, because the power cable was missing; another trip to the apple store was necessary.
My ‘new’ mini was slightly quieter, but definite much louder than my previous G4 iBook. I think the noise from the fan can be a problem, but I guess this is a very subjective area.
Ten days later, the computer froze (Bluetooth keyboard/mouse) whenever I plugged in my second USB memory stick. Soon later, Bluetooth wasn’t working at all. Zapping the PRAM and disconnecting for 5 minutes didn’t help. I installed a the tiger update (10.4.6 ) and the firmware update without success. Bluetooth was dead.
I bought the mini back and asked for the refund.
Pros: Extremely fast if you have the universal binaries
Cons: Rosetta is a killer, a old G4/G3 shows a faster response, but I have only experience with MS Office
Finally, Apple Care was very helpful, and Apple Store had no problems in exchangeing the Mini and later give me the refund.
PS: Unfortunately I sold my G4 iBook already and I have to stay with my first generation white iBook

    Frank,
That really does stink.. I had a similar bad experience with the mac mini only it had nothing to do with noise problems.. I got mine out of the box, my first mac ever mind you, and it worked fine for 3 or 4 days then it just wouldn't turn on any more.. tried all the trouble shooting tips; exchanged power cords; finally had to send it to my parents to take into an apple store to get fixed because I'm in the military stationed overseas and for some odd ball reason Apple doesn't have a central place for you to send in desktops to get repaired.. that still bugs me about the service but I'll get over it I guess. Loved the computer but can't say it bolstered my confidence in the integrity / reliability of macs at all.. I purchased it in early April and I still don't have it back. Kinda wish I hadn't bought a mac at all now but I guess I'll be glad to get it back..

  • Hostname issue with Mac Server 3.1.2

    Hi Everyone,
I have one stupid question, I think, and need your help.
I have one Mac mini, and I want it to be my file server. I have Mavericks 10.9.3 and Server 3.1.2 with it. I set up everything, and it looks fine. But when I use my client to ping the server hostname, backed me that: unknown hostname. But if I try to ping hostname with the server, worked.
Please advise if you have any idea about it. Thanks~~

If you're pinging the domain name, the client is not querying a DNS server that knows that name. It should be querying the same DNS server that that the server is using. Most likely, that's the server itself.

  • Acrobat Reader X with MAC Server based User Profiles

    Hello Forum,
I'm a bit in trouble with Acrobat Reader X (10.0.0.3) on my Mac. We are using server based user profiles for the whole network. (SL Sever and SL Clients 10.6.7)
Installing the Reader X has finished successfully. If I'm starting my Reader, a requester is popping up, asking me if Acrobat should be the default application for PDF files or not. Pushing any button causes the application to terminate after some seconds.
Due it's working with a local profile without any errors I think the problem is the server based user profile.
Any ideas how to solve this problem? Switching to local profiles is not possible ...
    Best Regards,
    Markus

    Hi Michael,
sorry for using the wrong forum. I'll post my question to the Reader board ...
To answer your question. That was my idea too, but it is not possible to copy a whole profile. They are a lot of other problems if you do that. I didn't find the settings only. may it would be enough to copy the settings for the reader.
    Best Regards,

  • I have no experience with mac and just bought an imac.  How do I transfer all my pictures, data and itunes from my pc?

I have an ipod and an ipad.  I tried simply putting the data on these portable devices but they would only accept a small fraction of them.  For example, I tried dragging a picture into itunes and I got an error that said this file cant be played in itunes.

Help here >  Transferring music from a Windows computer
You need to sync your photos using iTunes.
    iOS: Syncing with iTunes
For example, I tried dragging a picture into itunes and I got an error that said this file cant be played in itunes.
iTunes doesn't support that file type.

  • Need help with network user accounts on Mac server App on Yosemite, any tips?

I've been trying to set up a small network with the Server app on Yosemite. I don't want to do anything crazy with the server, I'd just like to know how I can set up network user accounts so that they can login from other Mac computers on the same network. I already have Open directory set up, the Macs that will be used on the network with the server have already been joined to the server under login options. I have created the network user account, I have also joined the user account to a group that I created. When I try to login to the network account from one of the Macs, it doesn't work. I'm pretty rookie with Mac server, can anyway give me any pointers of what I should be doing? Or if I am doing something wrong. Thanks guys.

The most important step, once you've got Open Directory and DNS set up, with Local Network Users set up in Server.app, is to make sure that all client Macs are using the server's IP address as the primary DNS server in System Preferences > Network, and that they have joined the Network server in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Options.
Having said all that, I have just spent hours setting this all up only to find out that Mail doesn't currently work with Network Homes in 10.10.3 / Server.app 4.1.
I will be hoping that Apple recognise the bug, and put out a fix soon.

  • Sharing printers and files in a windows network with Mac OS 9.1

We've just installed an old iMac with Mac OS 9.1 in the office. The network is made up of 2 windows PCs and this new iMac, connected through a D-link wireless router. We have a USB printer connected to one of the PC's and it's shared by the rest.
Anyway, I have very little experience with Mac OS and I want the iMac to use the printer as well as share files with the other PCs. Could anyone help me with a "foolproof" guide on how to do this? Thanks

    Followup:
indeed, 10.6 uses ntfs streams when availible to store metadata.
    for a workaround:
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an5/nsmb.conf.5.html
    create
    /etc/nsmb.conf
    contents:
    \[default\]
    streams=no
    close all server connections, reconnect.

  • WPA 2 with Mac authentication

    Hi all,
I am faced with a dilemma. I have implemented a wireless network throughout our main building using wpa2 leap authenticating against Active directory. Now Security Engineer is griping that mac authentication be used in addition. The only reason I did not choose this option because I believe that the mac is transmitted with an initial packet and can be spoofed anyway not to mention the overhead of tracking all macs. Does anyone have any input on this issue that would help the argument of supporting or not supporting the authentication methods I just spoke of any help is greatly appreciated!

Well, if your security engineer is so dead set on adding MAC address to the authentication process even though he knows that MAC address can be spoofed(it's biggest vulnerability) - good luck with changing his mind.
I had experience with MAC authentication at the enterprise level. I used it along with WEP. Obviously there is no AD or RADIUS in place. Entire list of MAC addresses is kept on all APs to facilitate enterprise-wide roaming. Well, having a list of 300 MACs on the AP makes the authentication process painfully slow. I don't know how many clients you have and what kind of RADIUS server you are using. The impact will be different in your case.
Apart from slow authentication process because of gigantic list of MACs, it is very hard to keep up with all MACs because of new laptops and upgraded client adapters, etc. If the users make a fuss, your Security Engineer may change his mind.
