Blackberry Torch 9860 won't start

Type of phone: Blackberry Torch 9860
Problem:
I had a software problem, phone got stuck, and after restart it gave a jvm error. I tried to fix it through Blackberry Desktop Manger. During the fix it stopped, and i got a white screen on the phone. After disconnecting it from USB, and putting it back in, the phone didn't do anything anymore.
It won't start, it won't recognize, it won't load the battery, no symbols appear when connecting it through USB (even with batt. out). It looks completely dead.
My guess is that the mainchip software corrupted during the fix, and this is causing the problem.
My question, can i fix it, when the computer cannot recognize the phone, and cannot turn it on in any way?
I tried to find a solution for this problem, but there aren't many cases related to my specific details.
Help would really be appreciated at this point!
Thank you!

Given that result, I recommend a clean OS reload. The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try the "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Torch 9860 does not starts

    help!
my blackberry Torch 9860 does not starts, and the red led blinking a slow time and 3 times faster
I removed the battery and waited, when i put the battery back, nothing happens
I installed the blackberry desktop, but it does not recognize the phone, not from any sign that is connected
I tested with another blackberry and connected everything right, the problem is not the cable or pc
when I connect it via USB the red LED blinks 1 time 3 times fast and slow
when I try to start it nothing happens

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain a known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Memory leak issue on Blackberry Torch 9860

I own a Blackberry Torch 9860 Os 7.0 Bundle 1465 for the last 5 months
Previously I had Blackberry Curve 9300 which I had upgraded to OS 6.0. It had memory leak issues wherein my application memory would gradually dropdown to merely KBs within a few days and I had to reboot it to restore the same.
When I purchased Torch 9860, I migrated my device settings from Curve to Torch using the Desktop Manager. I face the same memory leak issues in this new device as well. I have 3 email accounts configured on my device and some social networking applications which include facebook, twitter, and some messengers. I usually delete my emails and keep only a few useful mails for reference. Still I am facing this issue wherein I have to reboot my device to restore the application memory. It starts from 152 Mb and usually dropsdown to merely Kilobytes of memory. The phone freezes for around 1-2 minutes sometimes when I am on call, or accessing my contacts.
Also to let you know that I have a 8GB memory card on my phone which has around 1.6 GB free space. I have disabled Compression on my memory card as well.
Please advise as I am having a hard time using this time this way.

    Hi salmaatty
Have you recently installed any application before this Problem started ? Think carefully any new application , theme , wallpaper or any recent app update !
If you have then try to boot your device on Safe Mode , On Safe Mode delete any application which you think might be responsible for this issue , from Options > Device > Application Manegement > locate and delete any newly installed 3rd party application , it might help in resolving your issue :
KB17877 : How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
KB10040 : How to view or remove installed application on a blackberry smartphone
However .. If above fails or you're unable to boot your device on Safe mode then to recover your device you have to reload your OS , Try this method to load the OS again :

Try it and let us know.

my BlackBerry Torch 9860 restarted itself and restarts again and loops again cant start the phone at all. Pls help! Urgent! What could be wrong? OS 7?? I think it may have some problem... I need help!!

    Dear Fisol,
Thank you for your swift reply. I hope that my service centre would give me an immediate solution rather than awaiting 30 working days and being given a new one. I am EXTREMELY frustrated and disappointed by the symptoms my phone have may stem from poor quality assurance after phones fabrication.

  • My Torch 9860 Fails to Start

My Torch 9860 does not start up. I removed and plugged back the battery three times, but the screen is stuck on loading page. Can anyone help me with this issue, please?

How many times did you try? How many variations from the documented instructions did you try?
    I recall one device I had (a 9550, I think) that required
Waiting until the screen became responsive
Holding the ESC until about 50% of the loading bar
Releasing the ESC key until about 80% of the loading bar
Then holding the ESC key from about 80% to 90% (I think)
That was the sequence that device needed, and it took considerable experimentation to find it. If you have only tried once or twice, and have not tried any variations, then you may wish to consider doing so.
Otherwise, the recovery methods are more drastic:
KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
KB27956 How to recover a BlackBerry smartphone from any state
    http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry
Of course, those are only useful if the problem is not hardware. And hardware problems are impossible to truly diagnose at an internet-distance.
    Good luck!

  • Blackberry Torch 9860 becomes unusable

    dear friends,
my Blackberry torch 9860 becomes unusable after three months of service. i have just used memboo memory booster on it, and it restarts without reopen. each time i pull the battery, when i place it again, it starts an never finish to load to pass the loading step to open.
what can i do or what Blackberry can do for me please??

    Hello Brandohn
    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
    BlackBerry Device Operating System downloads:http://www.blackberryforums.com/blackberry-device-specific/
Just select the appropriate device model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.
IF the above does not work or help, You will need to use JL_Cmder to wipe the device and subsequently load the OS to the device. Follow the instructions here:
    Download JL_Cmder http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/18789-jl_cmder.html
    or download BBSAK http://bbsak.org/download.php
If JL_Cmder does not work, you can try this:
    KB10144, http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB10144
    and this: KB20371 http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB20371
    Additional information:
http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB24395 "Error 523", "App Error 523", or "JVM 523" appears on the BlackBerry smartphone

  • Torch 9860 Will not start

My 9860 will not start . The phone will try to start up but gets 3/4 across the screen then stops and tries to start again . Any help would be good . Thanks

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
Otherwise, you may be in a bad situation indeed, with the only remedies being quite drastic:
    http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry
KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
KB27956 How to recover a BlackBerry smartphone from any state
Hopefully you already have a good backup of your BB, as these measures typically do not allow for any to now be taken.

If BlackBerry Desktop Software is not recognizing your phone, you're really out of luck; it's imperative that BDS connects to your phone.

  • Blackberry torch 9860 downgrade from os 7 to os 5 or 6

    Hi,
May you please advise on how to downgrade the blackberry 9860 os from os 7 to os 6 or 5?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Yes you can downgrade it.
    Follow these steps:
You will need a PC, an internet connection, your BlackBerry Device and your device usb cable to implement all this.
This is how i upgrade my BlackBerry and ill make this simple and straight forward as possible.
    1. Uninstall first any BlackBerry software that you previously installed on your PC, as it may and will conflict with the guide
    2. Download your specific and latest BlackBerry device OS here or any other official BlackBerry software download page and install it.
    3. Download BlackBerry Desktop Manager and install it.
Note: If the OS that you are downloading is from your official carrier, skip step 4, if you got it from other carriers – read on brother.
    4. Change your folders option to show hidden files/folders (Click My Computer > Organize > Folder and search options > View tab > click "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
Search your C: drive for Vendor.xml and delete them. Else, you can look for the two vendor.xml manually thru
    - Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete Vendor.xml. (If you are running 64-bit Vista or Windows 7, the path will be C: > Program Files x86 > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader)
    - On Windows Vista/7 navigate to C:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML (Where "YOUR_USER" is your username)
    – On Windows XP navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER\Application Data\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML (Where "YOUR_USER" is your username)
    5. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader. (If you are running 64-bit Vista or Windows 7, the path will be C: > Program Files x86 > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader) double click Loader.exe. Follow the wizard and let it take your BlackBerry device into pure awesomeness.
    6. That's it.
If all else fails, fire-up up the Desktop Manager and look for the update button (if it didn't pop-up)
Please thank those who help you by clicking the button.
If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking "Accept as Solution"
