Blackmagic AVI - No Video

So I recorded 4 services this weekend using a Blackmagic DeckLink SDI card onto an XP box (just like I do every weekend). The files are recorded as an 8-bit YUV NTSC AVI file with Blackmagics Media Express. I then transfer those files to my iMac (mid-2011) for editing the following day, using Premiere Pro CSC6. This time, 5 of the 6files did not import the video. Only the audio. I can go to the original file on the XP box and the video/audio play just fine in Windows Media Player, but for some reason they don't import into my iMac. Even after a reboot, and a new project file. Any ideas?

shooternz - I can only assume that with Premiere it does. I have been editing this way for almost a year, with no issues. And all the files that are in my project folder were recorded and imported the exact same way. Nothing changed except the file name.
John - I didn't check that yet. I will do that next and let you know.

I use the card purely for external monitor previewing,  so I continue to use the native codecs.  However, you need to use a BM timeline preset to drive the output to the external monitor via the BM IP card.
Once editing is complete, it is a doddle to cut and paste all clips used in the sequence into a timeline using an Adobe preset, thereby losing the external monitoring.
A word of caution:  I am unable to upgrade to CS5.5.1 on my Win 7 64 system, and have it on reasonable authority that it is because I have the BM IP installed.  The upgrade is fine on my non-BM IP laptop!

Please read this article to see if it helps: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/What-to-do-if-video-does-not-play-well-on-your-pho...
As for the app Smart Movie, well that may not be a fully featured video player and as this is a user to user forum for support of Nokia products and services only, you won't find any help here unfortunately.

  • Editing a BlackMagic AVi file

I have Premiere Elements 10.  A service is offering to convert 8mm film to a Blackmagic Avi file.  I have no Blackmagic hardware.  I have Win 7 64bit.
Will PE10 read this file in so I may edit the file.  Do i need to obtain any new codecs, and if so, how do I do that?
If the edited file is saved to hard disk, will it be Blackmagic Avi, or what?
What is the difference between Blackmagic Avi and AVI Canopus or AVI Cineform which are optionally offered by the conversion company at a higher price?
I am new to film editing and will appreciate your help!

Many of the BM CODEC's are available for download and installation. I have a couple, that I have had to use with PrPro, and they have worked OK, but not 100% flawlessly.
That, however, does not mean that those same (or newer) BM CODEC's will work in PrE.
There have been a few users (think they were on PrE 8 & 9, and I do not recall one recently), who tried to use their BM cards with PrE, and I do not recall any success. I'd do a search of this forum, to see what those users reported. They, IIRC, were trying to use the hardware, and not just the CODEC's, so their results might not be all that helpful. Even with PrPro, that does support the BM cards, there have been issues with the cards' drivers. In most cases, and again from memory, when the users got the updated drivers from BM, things went well. BM seems to be of a mind that they need to update their drivers, and especially with each new version (either update, or upgrade) of PrPro, and step up quickly. Still, there have been a few weeks, where a card, and the resultant BM Projects, were down, waiting for the new drivers.
Maybe a user of PrE 10 has experience with the BM CODEC's, and can give you a definitive answer to your question, as I just had some general, and probably not very useful, comments.
    Good luck,

but i still wonder isn't there a way to get this smart movie free.
Antyhing that is shareware that is not discussable here if anyone wants to have it in other way.
If you are really not willin to pay then go to www.mobile.divx.com and download divx player for OS 9.1.
It is freeware. Does job quite well.

  • Using BlackMagic Intensity Pro Video Compression card with FCP in a MacPro

BlackMagic is offering the Intensity Pro card that they claim is enhancing the quality of video compression for better results than software driven compression, even with Standard DV in addition to HDV, and at a surprisingly cheap cost (less than $300).
    http://www.h-digital.com.au/hardware/hardwareview.asp?id=152
As someone used such hardware driven compression card in a MacPro ?
Does-it really help making better quality DVDs?
If not are there better hardware driven compression card?

7-8 years ago, we said that analog video was at the low end and DV was at the high end.
Uh, DV was NEVER on the high end. Digibeta and Beta were analog, and were HIGHER end than DV. Just because it was digital doesn't mean it was better. DV is compressed 5:1 and has 4:1:1 color sampling. Beta was 4:2:2 and better than DV...and Digibeta was and still is the high end SD format. DVCPRO 50 a close second. No...DV came in on the low end...like HDV comes in on the low end of the HD spectrum.
If this Intensity card does not help to get better compression than software driven compression, is there another card which can do so ?
Well, I answered this, but you must have missed my answer, so I will bold it for you: *THERE IS NO CARD OUT THERE FOR THE MAC THAT WILL AID IN DVD COMPRESSION.* I don't know about the PC side, so I make the statement to include MAC only. There are several hardware solutions for encoding DVDs that distributors use when making the theatrical DVDs like OCEANS 13...but those are separate hardware encoders. And no, again, those encoders are not available on a Mac.
What I mean at the end is to find ways to have higher quality DVDs than when using software such as Compressor. Do you follow me ?
I follow you....you aren't following me. Since I am an editor and not a distributor, I don't know what those solutions are. They exist outside of the editing world, so you have to GOOGLE this or look elsewhere. Needless to say, the Intensity does not aid in this. No capture card does. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed to capture non-firewire formats and to output to non-firewire formats...not to aid in DVD compression.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro Video Card

I am in need of a HDTV/HDMI video out solution when playing back Quicktime movies in Logic Pro 8. Can anyone report success with the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card? Or are there better alternatives (besides Firewire out).
    Thanks.

    hi,
ihave bought it and am using it with my quadcore g5 2.5 ..
for now i switched back to canopus because its much more stable and not
"touchy" when i jump around in the timeline...
but this may have a lot of other reasons ..
with finalcut its very nice ans stable, i think the drivers have been written
to be compatible with fcp rather than logic.
I wantd to have the picture for an HD Movie in Llogic but now i prfe to have

  • Imported avi files video choppy, audio okay

Had to resort to using Dazzle bridge with Pinnacle HD 14 to get D8 tapes captured to laptop. Clips play fine if i just click on them. They are avi files. When I import clips to Premiere (I don't like Pinnacle) the audio is okay but video is choppy - frames keep freezing although the audio continues okay. One of my puzzles is what is the proper project preset for files and folders as sources. Doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere, even in Grisetti's book. Also, presets for importing D8 format tapes is also not addressed. While I was able to import this files to PRE before (the last few weeks) now they won't capture. That's why I resorted to retrying dazzle pinnacle combo in desperation. The bridge works to capture, can import files into PRE but again, the freeze frame problem noted above occurs.

Unfortunately, the Dazzle doesn't interface well with Premiere Elements. It works great with the Pinnacle software that's designed to work with it. But it doesn't produce DV-AVIs, the universal language of PC-based video.
If you open those AVIs with G-Spot, it will tell us what type of codec those files use.
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
Once we know that, we may be able to recommend software for converting it to an editable video.
Or you can just edit it with Pinnacle's software.
The best solution though would be to capture any analog video with a DV bridge, a device designed to create DV-AVI files. The FAQs to the right of this forum offer more information.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/431853?tstart=0
    EDIT:
You refer in your post to D8 video. If by that you mean Digital8, there is an even simpler solution (assuming you also have a Digital 8 camcorder). But only if you're using Sony Digital8. Regular 8mm and Hi-8 video won't work  with this system.

  • Programs that allow .avi 'streamed video' to be viewed

I've seen some replies here to "problems viewing .avi files" posts -- e.g., using the VLC media player to view .avi files.
Do VLC and other programs (QuickTime plugins, etc.) that support .avi automatically open when .avi files are streamed from the Internet, or do they only work with downloaded .avi files?
I ask because I downloaded VLC and still have not been able to view .avi streams. The QuickTime logo appears on-screen and then changes to a 'watermarked' version with a 'question mark' superimposed over it.
    Thanks.

To my understanding, AVI is not a file format unto itself, but more of a container for any one of a number of formats.
The other problem is none of the Mac video codec players can correctly play any Windows Media Player 10 or higher encoded video that also includes DRM.
Ergo, if the AVI in question was encoded with WMP10 and includes DRM footage, nothing we currently have will play it.
Personally, I haven't had a problem with AVI, so perhaps I've been fortunate enough so far (banging head against desk) not to have any wmp10 stuff

  • PP CS4: .avi audio/video out of sync

Hi, I just got Premier Pro CS4 because I felt too limited by Vegas Movie Studio.
I started a new project and imported the video files I wanted to use, but I'm having a strange issue. When I import .avi files and scrub through them, the audio will not skip forward, it will continue to play in order from the beginning of the video. Also when I import .avi files, a ! appears in the lower right-hand corner. When I click on it, it says: File importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure of [file].avi Reading and writing this files metadata (XMP) has been disabled.
This does not happen when I use .mp4 files.
I suspect if I converted my .avi files to .mp4, the problem will be solved (I am testing this theory now), but I literally have over 100 .avi files and it's taking a long time to convert one file, let alone 100+.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I need a codec? I have a DivX codec installed. Do I need to uninstall it/get a different one?
Thank you for the help! I'm looking forward to using Premier once this issue is settled.

Xvid is the open source version of DivX. They are very, very similar.
I would convert all of the DivX and Xvid material to something that PrPro can handle perfectly. If SD material, on a PC, then DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV would be perfect.
While some have actually gotten DivX, or Xvid files to Import, into PrPro, few have been without some fairly major issues, such as no Video, bad Video, no Audio, or horribly out of sync Audio.
Those two CODEC's are delivery-only formats, and are not really meant to be edited later - only viewed.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I use an older shareware program, DigitalMedia Converter 2.7 (Deskshare), and it works well with both DivX and Xvid, going to DV-AVI. However, Deskshare has vastly updated from version 2.7, so I have no idea how well the new versions work.

  • Playing ".avi" , ".mpg"  videos

Please help. I`m not sure if this is the right part of the discussion , but maybe someone can help me out.
All I`m trying to do is to get my new mac to play "http://files..........avi", "http://files......mpg" , "http://files......rar" (with the only exception being".....wmv". That still works fine) and the like links by simply clicking on them. Right now I have to go through a process of copying , pasting , downloading,"opening with...", selecting procedure. A real pain in the you-know-what. On my old Vaio all i had to do is click and the window would open to maximum size by itself, the thing loaded-up by itself and started playing by itself. I `ve downloaded every single player imaginable - the"flip4mac" ,divix, real, VLC but to no avail.
    Please help.

Check your QuickTime MIME Settings preferences to make sure they are all enabled.
    Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced
Click on the MIME Settings button.
In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the Video box. This box will enable you to play .avi files.
    Click the OK button.
    Now click Streaming
Your settings you should be (as starters):

    Safari/QT MIME Plug-in Problems
Courtesy of user: andybal_uk - cheers!
If you've used the "installed plug-ins" command from Safari's Help menu & see no mention of QT, then No, of course that isn't normal.
You should see a section headed-
    QuickTime Plug-in 7.x.x
The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in web pages. For more information, visit the QuickTime Web site. — from file “QuickTime Plugin.plugin”.
then a long list of mime types that the plugin handles.
So - assuming you don't see that, either the plugin is missing for some reason or there's a conflict that doesn't allow it to load.
Take a look in your Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder - if you see any QT plugin or webplugin file there, remove them to the desktop or trash.
Now look in HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ amongst other files, this should contain QuickTime Plugin.plugin
IF you found a QT plugin in the Home account plugins folder & have removed it, you should quit any browsers & re-open them - hopefully you will now have QT functioning.
IF you have no file 'QuickTime Plugin.plugin' then it seems something went wrong with the installation or a recent update.

As a side note: I have never had any problems playing .avi files using QuickTime. However, since I have an extensive .avi collection as a carry over from my OS 8.x-OS 9.x years I elected to install & make default VLC when I switched over to Tiger & QT Pro. This way, VLC plays all of my .avi files beautifully.
I am new to the CAT Systems. Today I am celebrating my "first anniversery" (new computer & OS). So I guess the honeymoon is officially over!

  • H264 MPEG AVI import video timeline problem

    Hi,
I am a new user of Adobe Premiere CS4.  I am having a problem of importing H264 MPEG AVI files.  I set my project to be HDV 720p 30fps.  I grabbed Gspot and it has identify my video is a H264 codec name H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.  When I import the video I setup the timeline and when I do a playback review in the far left window (default setting).  It play the vido super fast, but the audio is playing normally.  I zoom in the timeline and it seems to think each second is one frame.  So it is playing the video like 30x speed(not 100% on how much faster, just lot).  What am I doing wrong?
After playing around some more, it looks like the video are keyframes as the time jump from frame to frame is huge, not what it look like in a WMP.  Did I somehow imported and it stripped out the deltas?

I looked at the thread and tried it, I get this error.

  • IMovie will not load avi/wmv videos, leaves sound out of mpg/mpeg videos

When i load mpg and mpeg videos into iMovie, the videos come out fine, but leave the sound out for some reason. There is no sound clip that is loaded with it. And when it comes to loading "avi" videos, it loads them, but they are blank. It loads a black video clip with no sound. And when it comes to downloading "wmv" videos it stops and says there was an error. This is the message it sends me. "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Volumes/Maxtor Extra Storage/WTC VIDEOS/WMV/911.wtc.2.no.base.smoke.wmv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048".
If you know anything about this, have an answer, or even a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate a response from you. My computer model is a Mac OSX 10.0 and I currently have iLife 06 with iMovie HD. Thanks a lot.

    Hello Mike,
MPEG video has muxed audio streams, which iMovie doesn't like - you'll have to convert.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ:
    1. Can't hear audio in iMovie when I import an MPEG clip
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6030.shtml
    2. Using Mpeg (DVD) footage
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
and also on Matti Haveri's website: How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV

    MPEG StreamClip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
AVI is a container (like Quicktime's .mov) and contain various codecs. In order to know how to convert, you'll need to find out what exact codec has been used. A possibility is that it's one of the numerous DivX codecs.
FFmpegX converts various AVI and DivX file types:
    http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
WMV files can be played with Flip4Mac, in order to convert them you'll need to get the $$ pro-version ....

    hope this helps

  • AVI file video plays too fast, but audio and noted length correct

I have a one minute AVI file. Premiere correctly says the frame rate is 29.97 and it is 60 seconds long. But when placed in the time line the video plays at about 6x speed and is finished in 10 seconds. The audio keeps playing for the correct 60 seconds. I rendered it and no change. Any ideas?
    Thanks - Bruce

Does Streamclip allow you to choose between Type 1 and Type 2 DV AVI? If so then you want Type 2 in your conversions.
    Cheers

  • Avi file video

I am new to Elements, just got it yesterday. I have a number of .avi files saved on my Vista machine from my Flip Video. So far the first clip I imported into Elements views and plays back just fine. Any other clip I import shows up almost completely black with a little line of video playing on the bottom of the clip. I looked at the clip properties and they all seem to be the same, they were saved in the same way. I've shut down and rebooted, still just the one clip shows up. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Lori

    Lori,
AVI is but a wrapper. It can contain a lot of different files, using different CODEC's. It is like saying, "I have a car." AVI is the equivilant of "car." What kind of car, which model, which engine, etc.?
My first stop would be to www.headbands.com/gspot and download and install G-Spot. It's a freeware program, that will tell you all sorts of info about your different AVI files. It will let you know if you have the CODEC's necessary to work with each, on your system. If not, it will give you the name and other details about it. Then, you'll need to grab Google and go find that particular CODEC. One word of warning: only install the CODEC's, that you need, one at a time. The various CODEC "packs," are notorious for doing less than a good job, and filling your computer with all sorts of trash, or even malware. Be careful of CODEC packs. Most are not good implementations of real CODECs and cause more problems, than they fix.
When someone tells me that they are getting no Audio, or no Video, from an AVI, I usually deduce that the AVI is encoded with DivX, or Xvid. These are delivery formats, and are not meant to be edited at all. They are heavily compressed, so quality is poor. When one re-compresses for delivery, the quality suffers another hit.
Still, editing can be done. Just expect poor quality. If G-Spot tells you that your AVI's are DivX, or Xvid, you can download the CODEC's from www.divx.com. The CODEC's are free, but if you handle a lot of these types of files, you might want to consider buying the full package of players, CODEC's and utilities. Seems that it's about US$45 for the full package.
Remember, "AVI" is but a "car." If your "car" is a Mercedes-Benz S-550, the alternator from a Yugo will not work. You need to find out what sort of "car" is inside your AVI.
    Good luck,
