Blackmagic Decklink Studio - No signal in FMLE

Hi. We are trying to set up a live webcast with Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2.1.1122 using a Mac Pro OSX 10.9 and a Blackmagic Decklink Studio card 9.9.3. This has worked in the past but upon setting it up recently, we've noticed that no picture or audio is coming through. We know the card works as the picture and audio come through perfectly in Blackmagic Media Express software. FMLE recognises the device but just shows a black screen. We've checked the settings and re-installed/updated all the software. Are we missing something? Thanks for your help!

Hi Pi,
Did you manage to resolve the problem? We're having similar issue. BM Media Express software recognises the card, but FMLE just reports it as Decklink and gives a blank input display. Any attempt to change settings causes FMLE to crash.
Thanks,

• FMLE won't let me set the sample rate with Blackmagic Decklink Studio 2 (Windows)

Hi,
I am trying to set the audio device on FMLE to the Decklink Studio 2's audio inputs. However,
the sample rate sticks to 44.1k and I can't change it to the 48kHz sample rate that
the Decklink defaults to (standard for broadcast is 48k).
Try as I may, it isn't changeable. I seem to remember a similar problem where the
sample rate defaults to the system audio card (on the motherboard) which is at
44.1.
Any ideas on a work-around? The audio from the Decklink is *much* better than
the built in card.....
thanks

One thing you might try doing is trashing the preference file in your user directory:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist
Like repairing permissions, this is a bit of a "catch-all" fix, not something specific to this particular problem.
Also, have you tried different file types like: TIFF or JPEG, there could be an issue with output from Fireworks. You could use QT Pro to transcode the file. Sometimes that can work to fix funky problems.
Does the Text Overlay filter work?

• Two BlackMagic DeckLink SDI Cards in FMLE

Is it possible to run two BlackMagic DeckLink SDI cards in two separate instances of Flash Media Live Encoder?
I can run one fine, but if I try to select the other, even if card # 1 [Decklink Video Capture in FMLE] is not in use, card #2 [Decklink Video Capture (2) in FMLE] only shows black. I have verified that video signal is working. Finally I installed Wirecast Demo to test if it was software and sure enough it works fine in Wirecast, each card shows the video fine.
I contacted BlackMagic and they stated it was the software. I have successfully done this with Viewcast Cards but now that we went HD BlackMagic are cheaper, but so far no luck in FMLE.
I would appreciate any isnight on this issue.
Thank you!

• Does Flash Media Live Encoder work with all the blackmagic-Design Decklink Studio?

Does Flash Media Live Encoder work with all the Blackmagic-Design Decklink Studio?

Well, I have my XH A1 Canon video camera hooked up to Shuttle Thundbolt as composite and the thunderbolt to my Macbook Pro (Late 2011 - 2.4GHz, i7, 16GB Ram) and FLM 3.2 does not see my camera.
When I hook my same camera up to my Windows i7, 2.8Ghz, 8GB Ram using my "Hauppauge capture card" as composite it can see my camera.
I'm going to try a simple VHS tape deck and see if my macbook pro can see it using the Shuttle Thunderbolt. I'm going to guess and say it won't.
I installed the drivers as well.

• BlackMagic Decklink Mini Monitor - how to output Source signal?

Dear PrP users,
I currently purchased a Blackmagic Decklink Mini Monitor video I/O to use with PP CC and SG CC as well as Da Vinci Resolve 9/10 once I move onto it; nothing too fancy which I'm fine with the kind of grading work I do. I did this so I could have a maximum of 4 computer monitors whilst I grade on my GPU then the additional output for the Director/Client.
However I did not know upon purchase that it only outputs the Canvas/Timeline (Program) from Premiere Pro. Before I would have my big TV output not only the Canvas (Program) but also the Viewer (Source) so I could show the Director/Client a clip from the browser without having to drop it into the timeline. This was a super useful feature and I am hoping to use this to Decklink Mini Monitor through premiere pro (as that is what I do primarily) that will both do Source and Program signals from PP CC. Is there a way to do that? Can it be done?
I will of course go on BlackMagic forums also to find out, but thought I'd try here also just incase.
Thank you.

You're right, I can output the Source monitor too however it will only output 1080p (I found this out my playing ProRes 1080p through the Source). The material I'm working with is r3d 4k, of which I am working in a 1080p timeline (down scaled and down sampled) which outputs the Program to the Blackmagic DeckLink just fine, when I try to put the same material in a 4k timeline it refuses to play it. Thus, the Browser and conversely the Source monitor has no choice but to output the r3d 4k in its native resolution (unless there is a way to non-destructively output the r3d 4k Source as 1080p also)?
Any solutions? Is it the video card itself (its BlackMagic cheapest model) which limited to 1080p or the TV itself I'm using?
Thank you for your advice.

• Blackmagic hyperdeck studio pro bad video with FMLE

I'm using a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio Pro over thunderbolt to get video into my iMac. Using the Ustream interface, the incoming video looks perfect. But using Adobe FMLE, it looks pretty terrible. Jerky motion, all sorts of graininess and noise. Any ideas? I've tried just about every FMLE setting I can try.
Also, sort of OT to the above issue...anyone know of a way to run 2 instances of FMLE on the same Mac?

There is no way on a Mac laptop to run two instances of FMLE and make it work with a single video input source. Its not the software, as much as it is a hardware sharing resource conflict.
You could build a PC and install a single Viewcast Osprey Video Card that has SimulStream software enabled (700e). Or simply install two identical cards in a PC box. We do this in my commercial webcast oprations here in Silicon Valley. Takes a Core i7 box to run 2 or even 3 instance of FMLE with HD inputs. Dual core anything can barely run standard def encodes safely.

• Monitoring 2k footage via SDI, Premiere CC, Decklink Studio

Hello all,
System specs:
MacPro 4,1 2.26Ghz 8 core, 32 GB RAM, OSX 10.8.4
Adobe CC
Resolve 9.1.5
FSI LM-2461W
BM Decklink Studio 2
BM Desktop Video 9.7.7
After searching the forums, I'm here seeking the collective wisdom of the Adobe CC user base.
I'm working in a 2048x854 timeline and I'd like to be able to monitor the timeline in Premiere on my external monitor with a Decklink Studio via SDI. No flavor of 2K sequence preset seems to work. If I take my 2048x854 timeline and nest it in a 1920x1080 timeline, boom, the image shows up and plays back on my external monitor.
Both Resolve and After Effects are capable of sending a signal to my monitor that will play back, while still working in 2048x854 timelines and comps.
Thoughts? Workarounds? Both AE and Resolve work, which makes me think this is a Premiere thing, like it isn't capable of downsampling to 1080, but I could be wrong.
Thanks for your time.

Yep, that's what I figured. Kinda lame, considering the other two thirds of my post workflow, After Effects and Resolve, seem to handle this without a hitch.
Should have spent the extra $300 for the Decklink 4K, although I have a feeling I would still be in a similar situation, given that my monitor supports 2048x1080 and I'm working at 2048x854, not to mention that it leaves me high and dry if I need to work with 4k in Premiere.
The workaround would be to work in a 2048x1080 timeline, but since we're working with different flavors of resolution, 1080 Phantom and 2K, 4K and 5K Epic footage with all different kinds of resizing, reframing and cropping, I would need a 2.40 matte over the edit/finish timeline to have some sense of the actual framing and then either nesting the sequence in a 2048x854 sequence or copy and pasting the final piece from the 2048x1080 timeline to the 2048x854 timeline. Neither of these options is very appealing to me when I could just be working natively in 2048x854 and skip all of this, like I am with AE and Resolve.
I'm liking most of what Premiere is offering, but there are some details that make me think the people engineering this software don't actually use it. Like needing to have the Program monitor in focus for the "create still" key command to work or some key commands that should always work, regardless of what window is in focus, like toggling targeting. For some inexplicable reason, the "Show in Finder" command does not work in the timeline. It works in the project tab and "Show in Project" works in the timeline.
Anyway, off to the Adobe feature request/bug report site, which incidentally crashed my browser and lost my request the last time I tried to submit one.
Good times.

• No Broadcast Monitoring with Decklink Studio 2

FCPX 10.0.3 and Decklink Studio 2
Anyone had luck getting an external output with a Decklink Studio?

It took me a while to figure that out but assuming you have Blackmagic Driver 9.2 Beta installed it works like that:
Quit FCPX and go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > BLACKMAGIC DESIGN
In the fist section of the dialogue-box there is a setting called "SET DEFAULT VIDEO STANDARD."
This setting has to be set to what your timeline or whatever it's called in FCPX is set to. In my case it was set to NTSC, so my 1920x1080 25p project was outputted as NTSC vie the Decklink card. Hence I saw just black on my CRT and my plasma said 480i.
Within FCPX's A/V Output settings you can not choose anything other that what the BM system preferences are set to. Those two drop-down-menu-style arrows are misleading. Maybe in the future we will be able to switch resolutions within FCPX.
As soon as I set "HD 1080 25p" in the BM sys prefs, I had "Blackmagic 1920 x1080 @ 25" in FCPX's settings and everything worked, except the audio.
If I output system audio via the BM card can I be sure it's perfectly sych with the video? On FCP7, Premiere and Media Composer its if I output anything via the BM card, audio goes with it as well, but system audio still comes out at the mac's output.

• Blackmagic Decklink

I can't figure out how to use the Decklink studio card in Premiere Pro CS5.
I've installed the card and tested it out (their Media Express application sees video and I can capture within that).
However, when I start up CS5 I've followed their directions and when attempting to create a project and select Blackmagic Capture as the video capture format/source (per http://www.blackmagic-design.com/media/1034687/decklinkmacmanual.pdf page 37) I only get DV. I can't see anywhere else in the applcication where I can direct capture from or playback to the card.
Help! This should be real easy and I'm missing something basic.
FYI, I'm capturing analog NTSC right now but will likely be using SD-SDI and eventually HD-SDI.
Thanks!
FYI, this is using the very latest drivers downloaded from the Blackmagic site (Desktop Video 9.1).

Uninstalled the 9.1 drivers, reinstalled with 9.2 (they were just released).
Now seeing the Blackmagic Capture as a format/source as per their documentation. Able to capture fine.
Will report back if there are further problems but hopefully not.

• Blackmagic Decklink & FCE

I just bought a new Mac Pro and a Blackmagic Decklink SP PCI-Express card. I'm trying to get video from a DVCPro Player into FCE HD 3.5. FCE does not allow me to chose the decklink card though, only Firewire devices. Is there anyway to do this. So far the only other option I have is spending more money and getting FCP which I would rather not do right now as I just spent so much. Can someone please help and let me know my options?

Cool I will look into one of those or just get the enclosure and build my own. Probably will be cheaper on my own as is most cases. I did get my video in ok and am dumping it into DVD Studio as I type this message. FCP was the key as FCE was a little too consumer for the equipment we are using at them moment. I really appreciate all the help on this Tom. You deffently seem to know your way around all this. I unfortunately am learning the hard (& expensive) way. I am going to try and return my Declink card and upgrade to the Pro version so I will have SDI input for the next video we do. This one looks pretty good but the actual tape we have is so much more beatiful. I guess I have a lot more money I will need to spend before my Editing system is even close to being what I need. Do you have any ideas on where to get good deals on some of this stuff. I still need to get either another LCD like the one I'm using (Sony KLV-S23A10 HD) or get (2) 20" Trinitron flat screen CRT monitors and an output monitor, I have been using a 13" Sony with SDI in @ the TV station and it seems to be fine for what I'm doing, and some studio monitors. After that I think I'll be ok for a little while on my editing station. At least aside from more RAM and the RAID array. Let me know if you know of anywhere. I again appreciate the help on this Tom.

• Decklink Studio + Windows Server 2008: Dropping frames after 10h of streaming

Hi!
We just bought two Decklink Studio cards to use with our live streaming servers.
First, everything works fine. We have high quality flash live streaming, using SDI input with embedded audio.
But after approximately 10 hours of streaming, the quality comes down, and the frame rate too, looks like the encoder start are dropping frames.
Then if we just try to stop FLME, they freeze.
The only way to close the program is forcing with CRTL+ALT+DEL.
Memory usage and CPU load do not change when the problem appears: 1.4GB RAM used, 18% of CPU load in all 8 cores.
At this time, if we restart the FMLE, all works fine again, for more or less 10 hours.
The specs are:
FLME 3.1
Windows Server 2008 R2 (64)
Decklink Studio w/ Driver 7.5.2.0
Dell PowerEdge R610
16GB RAM
Dual Intel Xeon E5504
I`ve tested a basic core i5 desktop with 4GB of RAM, running windows XP 32bit , and works fine for more then 36 hours with 1.3GB RAM used and 80% of CPU load. (need to stop tests after 36h).
Looks like a 64 bit problem with FLME.
Can you guys help me with this problem?
Thanks
Marcelo Guerra

Make sure that you are using the right set of device drivers for the 64-bit machine. Please share your session log file.

• Can't lower framerate with Blackmagic Decklink

We have FME3 and a Blackmagic Decklink SDI 10bit, drivers v6.6. We would like to stream at 15fps, but in FME, I can't set the framerate to anything lower than 25. When choosing 15, it just jumps to 25.
Also tried changing it in the card's system driver - which I can - but then when I load up FME, its clearly still running at 29.97, and I still can't change to 15.
Any thoughts?

FMLE supports only those FPS that are supported by device.
In this case device is giving fixed FPS which is 29.97 irrespective of value selected in FMLE. You are sometimes getting 25 FPS because of unavailabity of enough CPU to encode 29 frames per second.
The only workaround in order to get 15 FPS output is to load your CPU or Increase Video frame size so that some of the frames get dropped by FMLE because of unavailablity of CPU and effective output FPS drops to 15.

• Understanding the way to connect a MDD to BlackMagic Decklink Extreme card

Hi,
I require some help in the following:
I recently bought myself a Blackmagic DeckLink Extreme™ with 10bit SDI/analog video and audio capture card.
Looking at the specs, http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/sd/specs/, can someone give me directions as to the best setup I can do from the following sources and what other equipment I may require to achieve it.
- mono stereo audio VHS -> has 1 video/audio in and 1 video/audio out (composite connections)
- stereo audio video camera -> has 1 8 pin S-Video out port to composite connections (Hi8 tape type)
- DVD player -> has composite 2 x 2ch stereo audio out, 1 x 5.1ch stereo audio out, 2 x video out, 1x component video out, 2 x S-video out, 2 x digital audio out; 1 x RCA/OPT
- 2 x 23" monitors connected by ADC and DVI connections to a Apple MDD G4, may relay to 60" Plasma for video monitoring from video card prior to creating DVD final piece for playback.
Basically, I wanted to have multiple source inputs and outputs, but I'm having difficulty in understanding the setup. Please refer to http://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/connections/decklinkdiagram.pdf page 5/6.
I purchased the following from JayCar

Currently I have not succeeded.
I have just done a simple test like so:

Computer ------- Video In + Stereo In ---------> DVD (*)

Bigpond

(*) Tested using the following:

One option is to purchase a hard drive (say, a 2TB Hitachi G-Technology drive) and connect it to the USB port on the back of the Apple Extreme. The other option is to purchase a drive with an ethernet connection (say, a 2TB Lacie drive) and connect it to an ethernet port on the Apple Extreme.
In the second case what you'd have actually is a NAS. Apple's AirPort routers aren't known for fast file sharing. The NAS option might be faster.
Is either option better for streaming movies from the hard drive to my Apple TV?
I could be wrong, but an AppleTV may not be able to access content directly from a network drive. It may require that a Mac serve as an intermediary.

• Can't playback on Blackmagic Decklink HD extreme 2

Hi all,
I am looking to crossgrade from FCP7 to Premiere CS6 so I have the Master Collection Demo installed on my work station along with FCP. It's on a 2008 Mac Pro with 2 Quad core 3.2G Intel Xeons, 16GB ram, ATi 2600 HD 250mb graphics and a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme 2. In the FCP set up this card fed a full HD JVC broadcast monitor via HD-SDI and I had no trouble with it at all and it played any type of sequence. My problem is that I can't for the life of me get a picture on the screen in Premiere. No combination of BM sequence settings or codecs, either BM or otherwise, seem to get it going. Output options seem extremely limited in the application set up with only one box to tick under the playback menu. This seems to have no effect whatsoever. The aplication can obviously see the card because the option to check it as a playback is there and the audio routes through without error. I have installed the latest Premiere updates and am running Desktop video 9.6. AE plays on the monitor fine but nothing in Premiere unless I switch the BM card to extended desktop and use the broadcast monitor as a second LCD and tick that option under the playback menu but then my GFX card seems to struggle and drops frames all over the place. I admit the ATI card is a bit of a slouch but options were limited for Mac unless you want the high end cards, which I am considering, could the fact the card is under powered have anything to do with video not getting to the BM card. I don't know much about the MPBE apart from the fact my card doesn't qualify.
Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
Apart from no client monitor I'm loving Premiere, I'm finding th realtime stuff quite refreshing after FCP, which was a bit of a joke really in that area...but if I can't monitor, I can't make the switch.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
You don't need to use the blackmagic presets to play back through your card. What are your settings under preferences>general?playback? You might want to try uninstallig the blackmagic presets and installing the latest Deskstop from BM. The uninstall option will be available when you download BM Desktop from their support site. Having the latest version isn't what is important but uninstalling is.
Cheers,
Gerry
