Blackout with subtitles in iDVD

I have Perian installed and when I try to burn .AVI with .SRT subtitles the result is a DVD with a black screen as the first subtitles show up. I have the same problem in FR while playing AVI/SRT clips.
Any clues? The two problems seem to be related....
Thanks.

Do you see a full black screen or only where the subtitles are supposed to be?
Beaceuse I did the same, but I only got black an the lower third of the screen, where the subtitles were supposed to be.
The solution was to export the movie as a quicktime movie, which sort of, renders the subtitles to the movie, so then you can burn it in iDVD.
The backdown is that you can't turn off the subtitles, as they are part of the movie now.
It seems that the problem is that iDVD wont't recognize that the selection of the way subtitles are presented in the movie that are selected within Quicktime Pro, such as "Pure Alpha"
I hope this can help you.

  • Blackout with subtitles on Leopard. FR or Perian problem?

    I can't watch .avi files with .srt subtitle files on front row anymore. The screen goes black as the first subtitle appears. On Quicktime they run fine (thanks to Perian plug in), and they did run fine on Tiger Front Row. I first thought it was because FR is now a standalone app that can't handle this kind of file, but then, why can I still see the subtitles in those screenshots inside Front Row, and why doesn't the app just ignore the srt file? Looks like it's a problem with FR alpha channel rendering (that should take care of the subtitles) or something.
    Does anyone know how FR works now? If it is completely sepparated from Quick Time, how come it can display the subtitles in the preview screenshots and play regular .avi files that can only be played with Perian?
    Is there a way to configure this "little QT" inside FR?

    I have further information. Looks like Front Row is having trouble dealing with multi video track files. .srt subtitles are treated as a separeted video track. That's why not only subtitled video isn't working with FR.
    So, Apple, looks like it's not a perian issue after all. I think that's not a very difficult problem to solve, how about a little upgrade?

  • Quicktime File with Chapters to iDVD?

    I was getting "multiplexing" errors with a particular iDVD project that I imported from iMovie 6 so I thought I would export the project as a full Quicktime file and then drag the Quicktime file into iDVD. Will the chapter markers still show up in iDVD?

    Hi
    My list on *Multiplexing Error*
    PART One.
    Use of strange video/audio material eg .avi, .wmv, .mp3 etc.
    I only use.
    Video - StreamingDV (miniDV tape via FireWire) and
    Audio = .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else coverted to this .aff 48KHz)
    Using strange letters in video project name eg +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9
    strange letters in project name eg +
    as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.

    Simply remember to add subtitles to your Quicktime files and menu buttons.

    I always makes a DiskImage first and test this so that it runs OK

    Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

    First, I do not think that mixing widescreen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
    Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
    Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
    Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

    I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
    It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
    Hopefully this can help other people.

    Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the uneditited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

  • Make a new DVD with subtitles from original DVD

    Hello, i am trying to make a new DVD with subtitles from an original DVD a friend has sent to me in order to add the .*** file with the titles done with Jubler. My question is : I am converting the video ts folder of the original DVD with MPEG Streamclip to get a format that is possible to import with iDVD. so which is the best conversion for iDVD?

    My recollection is a bit fuzzy, but I think an older version of Quicktime (6?) still supported text tracks with transparent backgrounds. You might have to dig around to verify that, and it's an option, but here's a whole different approach...
    What do you think about using software like SnapZ Pro to record the version playing on your screen? It is taking video screen shots, so it won't be confused by the additional video layer (of text).

  • I have downloaded a movie with subtitle to iMovie. When playing the video, the subtitle does not show up through the entire video. It happens to my Mac Air and Mac Pro.

    I have downloaded a video with subtitle. When playing the edited video, the subtitle does not show up in the entire video. The subtitle comes and goes in the video.I have tried with my Mac Pro and Mac Air, with the same result. I have downloaded movie with subtitle before and never had this problem. Please advise.

    I'm not very knowledgable on this but subtitles are sometimes on a separate track from the main movie.  Try opening the downloaded video in Quicktime Player and saving it - you may be asked if you want to "flatten movie".  Choose to do this.  The resulting movie will probably now work OK.  Others may be able to supply more comprehensive instructions.

  • I would like to burn an i-photo album with subtitles to a CD with the photos in the same sequence as they appear in the album and to have the CD work the same on a PC as on the MAC.

         I have created several i-photo albums with subtitles and proceeded to burn them to a CD. The CD burned with the correct subtitles, however, the photos did not appear in the same sequence.  I tried another method and the photos appeared in the proper sequence, however, my subtitles did not appear as in the albums. Is there a method that I can burn an album to a CD with the photos in the same sequence and with the same subtitles as in the album?
         I would also like this CD to work the same on a PC as it does on a MAC.

    sorry but files on a CD have no order - filles are simply bits on the disk - the file viewer used to view them determines the order of viewing - for example using the finder on the Mac you can view files in Alpha order, date created order, date modified order, file size  order, etc, etc, etc
    If you expor tthe files to a desktop folder using the sequetial option then the finder (and probably Windows explorer) would display them in the order you want IF the user views them in alpha order
    Bottom line is that you have no control over how the end user views files - that they make

  • Airplay only plays audio -  video is black screen with subtitles

    On my 5th generation IPOD Touch, after downloading a movie from Itunes, I only see audio. The video is all black, with subtitls only.
    After many attemts to fix this - i.e. reboot Apple TV, Reboot TV, Reboot IPod touch, Reboot WIFI Router, I still saw this problem.
    This is with IOS 7.01.  Has anyone seen this problem? So annoying and frustrating!

    I suspect you are out of luck based on this:
    Can I play my rental on more than one device?
    If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
    If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • Rip a DVD with subtitles (owned by me)

    Hi all. The quick background:
    My company made a series of films (before i joined them) which was delivered on DVD some time ago and since then some of the original projects have been lost (Don't ask how this was allowed to happen!). Our client has asked if i can supply them with two of the sections from the disc as quicktimes for them to use in a presentation.
    I have used Mpeg streamclip to rip one of the sections and the result is perfect. The problem is the second section which has subtitles on it.
    How do i rip the file and keep the subtitles?
    Thanks in advance
    GK

    If you have an A/D converter or can use your camcorder as such you can use this roundabout method.
    1. Connect DVD player's AV outputs to converter which is connected to Mac.
    2. Open FCP and change Easy Setup to Converter.
    3. Play DVD with subtitles switched on and capture into FCP.
    4. Once in FCP export as a QuickTime Movie.

  • MEncoder: DVD to avi with subtitles results in screen flicker

    I'm trying to make an avi-file using mencoder with subtitles. Playing the DVD, or the VOB-file in mplayer works and encoding it without subs in mencoder works, but as soon as I include the subs, the avi-movie starts to flicker like crazy after the first subtitle appears.
    The command I use to encode.
    mencoder dvd://1 \
    -ss 00:10:00 -endpos 00:01:00 \
    -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=96:vol=3 \
    -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:autoaspect \
    -vf crop=704:544:8:16 \
    -sid 5 -aid 130 \
    -o movie.avi
    I've tried this on several movies, and the same result on all of them, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    I've tried using xvid (before I ran into the subtitle-trouble), but found it was a bit slower, (maybe because the default bit rate was higher?), and most of the mencoder tutorials talked about using lavc with mpeg4; plus x264 was too slow, on my 1 GHz machine when I tried it.
    The important thing is that I can play it on my (rather cheap) DVD-player, and include the subtitle in the video ("hard code it"), since my dvd-player can't read .srt or .sub-files, and I don't want to watch my backed up movies from the computer, but from the DVD-player, just as I would I do with the originals.
    At first I assumed the trouble had to do with the encryption of the discs, but since it works without subs, I assume these are the culprits. I'm new at using mencoder, so I assumed I was missing something, and google just tells me a lot of people are having problems with "motion flicker" but I could not find anything related to subs.
    Are you suggesting I do something like:
    -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=-700000 \
    instead?

  • DVD to front row with subtitles

    Subtitles are a really important option when watching movies. I have searched the internet high and low but not found anything yet that simply rips a dvd to a format you can watch in front row, whilst retaining the ability to watch with subtitles, *or without subtitles*. Have you found some software you can let me know about?

    You may be best to give iSubtitle a try (http://www.bitfield.se/). My Aunt is deaf, so often we need to find the appropriate Subtitles to add to a movie or TV show for her.
    I know this isn't quite what you were after, but it is a good start.

  • Cannot load movie with subtitles and export in QuickTime 10 / Os X Lion

    Since Os X Lion, when trying to load a movie (DivX) in QuickTime 10 at the same time that the related subtitles file (.srt) is in the same folder as the movie, QT 10 suggests to use QT 7. QT 10 cannot load the movie with subtitles (in Snow Leopard everything was OK). Q& 7 is useless too because it cannot export movies to another format.
    Anybody has a solution for this? Thanks for your help!

    I do this because Perian don't work with QT10 on Mac OS X Lion:
    -Try to open .avi movie with QT 10;
    -OS X ask you to open on QT 7;
    -Donwload QT 7 and install it. It will be installed on "Utilities";
    -Download Perian but don't install it;
    -Mount Perian, and click "Show Package Contents"
    -Go to "Contents"->"Resources"->"Components"->"CoreAudio" and copy to Desktop "A52Codec.zip" and unzip it;
    -Go to"Contents"->"Resources"->"Components" and copy to Desktop "Perian.zip" and unzip it;
    -Go to "Contents"->"Resources"->"Components"->"CoreAudio"->Quicktime" and copy to Desktop "AC3MovieImport.zip" and unzip it;
    -Then copy all packages with ".component" extention to /Library/Quicktime/;
    -Then you can run all movies on QT 7.
    Or,
    -Install MPlayerX;
    Or,
    -Install VLC;
    Or,
    Regards

  • Playing movie with subtitles and without

    Total newbie at making a film with subtitles and at using DVD Studio Pro
    The person creating the subtitles did it in FCP and I just opened her project and then laid it on my video. Question is - how can I burn the DVD with the options of English only or with subtitles.
    Do I need to have two movies imported into DVD Studio, one with subtitles another not (it's only a 30 minute video, so that's not a problem to fit on a DVD).
    Or is there another way to handle it in DVD Studio?
    thanks

    Typically you would NOT have subs on your footage, but would add them to DVDSP as a separate file. You can create subtitles inside DVDSP but if you do there is no flexibility in manipulating them later.
    Workflow is to create the footage in FCP, then to use that in a subtitler app to spot the speech and create the subs, then import the footage and the subs file into DVDSP.
    As for setting it up in DVDSP, have a look here:

    Hello,
    I have a problem with subtitles. After I insert them to movie timeline preview shows two lines i.e.:
    "Now, that's a roar Boog." (subs)
    "12 00:01:24:00 Now, that's a roar Boog." (Don't know what's that)
    And that thing remains on DVD. Second line remains even if I turn subtitles off on DVD. Can anybody help me with this problem?

    Some notes/ideas here that may help
    To
    Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
    Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
    Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
    Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
    Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

  • Some encoded files with subtitle and other are not

    I just encoded a few videos files with Nokia Video Manager. and all files b4 encoding are with subtitles(*.smi) in one same folder. I played encoded files and some results are with subtitles. (I didn't set up the video manager program to inserted the subtitles into final encoded files. also there is no option I can make insert subtitles in). and rest of files are not with subtitles. now I wanna make all files with subtitles. how make all files with subtitles?

    Short answer is I don't know.
    The way I get files with Subtitles is by Ripping the DVD with ImTOO DVD ripper, in the selections I select the audio track and Subtitle from the DVD to be used during the encoding. Then the resulting video has the subtitles built in.
    I can't get Nokia Video Manager to work reliably for me so I don't use it.
