Blade tool in 10.1?

Since upgrading to 10.1, my Blade tool has been acting funny.
My previous workflow would have me taking pre-edited video from TV Networks, and adding our logo into the corner.  I watch through the video, and take our logo out whenever their is text going behind it..  I would go to the first frame of what needed to be cut, hit B, and click the clip to split it.  I'd then find the first frame without the intruding graphic/text, and use the blade tool again..  Hit A, grab the clip, and delete with backspace.
Since upgrading to 10.1, every time I do this, it appears like my cuts are 1 frame off..  Why is the blade 2 now cutting 2 frames to the left, rather than 1?

Heeeeeelp meeee!

  • I can't get my blade tool to work in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7

I can't get my blade tool to work in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7. I magnify the clip to the highest zoom and when I select the blade tool, I see the icon but when I click on the clip to chop it.....nothing. The blade turns red and nothing happens. Please help.

If you are in fact in the active project window, try command B at the location of the skimmer and see whether it makes the edit.

  • Razor blade tool not cutting audio and video at the same time

    Hiya,
When using the razor blade tool in a timeline, my razor only cuts the video track, or one audio track at a time. The audio and video were imported together.
I would like for the video and two audio tracks to be cut at the same time--so that when I'm cutting I don't have to click three times (VA1A2).
What needs changed to do this? Thank you!!!!
A little annoying -- but would be a time saver. Never had this problem before FCS2.
    Thanks again!

Are the video and audio clips linked? If they're not, the cut will only apply to the track under the blade tool.

  • Blade Tool Problem

I'm in the middle of a project on Final Cut Pro X, and all of a sudden my blade tool stopped working correctly. Instead of simply cutting clips in half, it is now chopping off the entire rest of the clip after the blade tool edit point. Is this just a different setting that I somehow activated, or is it a bug in Final Cut X? How do I go back to just using the blade tool to split my clips in half?

Trashing the preferences is an essential first step whenever FCP X (or any other pro editing app) starts behaving problematically.
Corrupted preferences can occur at any time and lead to a tremendously wide range of symptoms which appear to have nothing to do with the preference settings.
Use this free app to do it:-

  • Blade tool is not working on primary story line?

Went in to take out an annoying blip in my primary story line and suddenly the blade tool does not seem to work.  I position my header and click on primary story line and nothing happens.  It will work on my audio (which is broken apart).  I also cannot seem to get the clip to move toward the spot I want it to join to.  This was pretty effortless before.  Have the rules changed in the new update?

I am not where I can post a screen shot.  Will when I can.
When I had something that I wanted to cut out, I would use the blade tool to cut at point in the story line (in the time line) and then I would drag the story line over what I didn't want and join it to what I did want.  When I select blade tool and click on the story line, nothing happens.  No little line appears to show that the film has been cut.  The name of the film clip usually came on to the clip at the point of the cut.  If I first cut my sound and then come up to the primary story line, then it will cut but then the handles appear but I cannot move anything.
I think 10.1 has some upgrades in how you interact with cut clips but the support materials I read don't seem to say anything different.  I'm stymied by something that used to be pretty straightforward.

    Hi,
I'm using 10.0.7. It's like snapping won't turn off. Instead ,if i use the keyboard to nudge the clips, there's no problem. I am using that at the moment.
    1. when i try to drag
    2. when i nudge:
    3. snapping is off.
    Thanks,

  • Where is the blade tool?

I've got STP 3.0 and have up until now been editing my audio directly in FCP or if it's small jobs, just using SoundStudio 3 from Freeverse.
I'm trying to trim an audio track to 30 seconds so I can set the fade in/out as I need them for a DVDSP project. I could do this in FCP and be done with it, but want to learn STP and start using the right tool for the job.
I've read the manual, and it says there is a blade tool, but pressing B doesn't work, and I don't see an icon for it in the tool bar. I've got the Layout set to Standard, and the audio track in the top window with envelopes on for manual control of fade in/out like I'd use the Pen tool in FCP. But I can't figure out where the blade tool is.
Reading the STP 3 manual, searching for Blade tool, it shows Blade and Blade All Tools, and shows a different toolbar than I have showing in my window.
I have (L to R) Selection Tool, Frequency Selection Tool, Sample Edit Tool, Audio Stretching Tool, Zoom Tool and Scrub Tool. But no Blade/Blade All Tool.
The Help isn't that useful either, for Using the Timeline Editing Tools, it says: "The Timeline includes editing tools you can use to edit and adjust clips in the Timeline."
Yeah, so? How do I get the Blade tool to show? I've RTM, but still can't figure it out. Please help.

    Hi Grant,
What you have discovered is that there are two ways of working in STP, in an Audio file project and in a multi-track project, each with its own set of functionality and features. The blade tool is available in multi-track projects; you are working on an audio file project, where that tool isn't available.
Since you don't have the blade tool, just select the portion of audio that you want to delete, and press delete or backspace. STP will delete it, but also keep track of that "action" so you can add it back in later if you need to.

  • Using blade tool in timeline seems to be altering stabilization??

I have a clip that I'm using that is stabilized and retimes and I want some effects to blend into eachother.  For example, it is a small feature about my grandfather and it's a long clip of him sitting in a rocking chair. I want the effects to start in sepia with a aged film look then blend into a 50's TV style then blend to normal.  There is audio of him talking about some memories in background.  I retimed to slow it down with optical quality and I stablilized it.  I figured I would use blade tool at the points I would want the look to change, but when I cut the clip with the blade, the video seems to zoom out a bit in the first frame of the next created clip, and then the style's don't blend because the video jumps.  Is it messing up the stabilization?  Any ideas or suggestions.  Thanks.

    Yes, it is.
Don't cut the clip. Use keyframing to animate the effect values. usually there is an amount value that can be animated to change the effect.

  • Blade Tool Changes Time

I'm editing an hour long presentation, imported from tape at 1080i, 29.97i.
I'm simply cutting out chunks using the blade tool, for example from 1:57 – 4:46. As I scrub through, the time changes as expected. But when I switch to the blade tool (sometimes not until I actually make a cut) the time all of a sudden changes and doesn't match where the playhead or cut is. It changes by as much as a few minutes. Here are some screenshots:
    1. Select tool, playhead at 58:19;04 as shown in timeline and 'clock'
    2. Didn't move anything, simply tapped 'B' to switch to blade tool. Now clock shows 1:00:37;24, even though the playhead is clearly still at 58:19;04 as before.
It's messing me up because as I scrub to the in point and cut, I can't be sure if the time for the out point is correct!
Any ideas on why this is happening and how to avoid it?

When you switch to the Blade tool, the Dashboard is no longer showing you the project timecode, but the clip timecode. Rather than using the Blade tool for the way you're working, marking In and Out points might work better. With the selection made, simply press the Delete key to ripple delete the project.

  • How to open blade tool

You're in the audio editor and you can select a section of audio and CUT, but not split.

  • I have no blade tool on the right of the timeline in FCE

I am unable to locate the blade tool on the right side of the timeline as in the picture online.  I am brand new to FCE, have used Corel on my Pc and having a real difficult time in getting started.  I'm used to the cut and delete or cut and insert and think the blade does what the cut did on my PC.  Just can't locate it.

You can also access the Blade tool by hitting the b key on your keyboard.  Hit b twice to access the multi-track Blade tool.

  • Is there a way that you can copy and paste blade effects from one clip to the other so that the cuts are an exact duplicate of each other?

Is there a way that you can copy and paste blade effects from one clip to the other so that the cuts are an exact duplicate of each other?

The same cuts that I have in this clip that i performed with the blade tool, I want to duplicate, copye, paste and apply to another clip. I want the cuts to mimic and be an exact same. I wish i could highlight the clip, click copy and then highlight the other clip and then click paste and the cuts apply.

  • I can't use the cut tool above the primary timeline...

I can't use the cut tool above the primary timeline...
it only works on the primary timeline. why and what can I do?
    thanks

Are you talking about the blade tool? You can use that on any clip, regardless of where it is. If you talking about using the keyboard shortcut, then the connected clip has to be selected. It doesn't have to be a storyline.

  • FCPX Blade cuts are snapping to beginning/end of frame. How do I turn this off?

    Hello,
My FCPX preferences are set to show subframes within project timelines.
I would like to make blade cuts within subframes, however when I make a cut with the Blade tool, the cut snaps to the beginning or end of the frame that I am in.
The frame I am in is also highlighted (in the playhead area).
This "snap to frame cut" happens whether I have snapping turned on or off. Seems to be an odd behavior for the snapping tool too, if that is the issue.
FCPX wasn't behaving like these the last time I was making cuts. Is there a preference or something that I need to turn off so that I can make a cut on a subframe?
When in doubt, trash Preferences and reopen FCPX??
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Thank you both.
I do have separate video and audio in my timeline.
I did notice that I can make a cut in the Audio wherever I want, but the video cuts stick to the beginning or end of the frame that I'm in.
Now I need to make the video and audio cut in the same place so they are not offset from each other.
